WIP Wednesday Friday

“How're you coping?”

Cody snorts at the bluntness, staring down at the neon-drenched countertop.

“With work,” he says, instead of fine, or terribly, or I'm not. “He always shoulders… shouldered more than his fair share of the flimsiwork, always took on more responsibilities than he should’ve. Until the Council assigns another Jedi, that work falls to me. So, I wake up, I do flimsiwork, I read datapads til my eyes burn, and I go to bed. Can't sleep very well, but I try. I… I hate that everyone's walking on eggshells around me, waiting for me to fall to pieces. I can't. I have too much to do.”

Fox hums.

“I have no room to judge you for your work-life balance, but you're on leave, Codes. You need to take some time, or you're risking a breakdown in the field. If you don't take a breather now, you might fall apart later,” he says. Cody frowns. Fox is right, and he hates him a little for that.

“I don't wanna take some time. I can't.”

“Why not?” Fox asks, no judgment in his voice.

Cody runs a hand down his face, then looks at his brother.

“That makes it real. This can't be real. He's-” Cody cuts himself off. He was going to say he's alive, but is aware that's a bad idea for several reasons, and he's not even sure he believes that anymore.

Fox places a hand over his own, squeezing gently.

“I'm sorry. I know you were close. It's… fucking miserable, being the one that survives. It's even worse when the death is senseless.”

Cody sighs, resting his head on the bar and looking up at Fox. His brother's hair is grayer than he remembers it being, and there's a new blaster bolt scar on the side of his head. His eyes hold sympathy and pain, pain on Cody's behalf, and the unshakable certainty of Cody's loss that he's displaying is hard to look at. Cody shuts his eyes. He aches.

Cody feels the last spark of hope in his chest flicker out, and a dark grief rears its ugly head in its place.

for Angstpril Day 1: Liar Obi-Wan is asked to take on another facial transformation mission that may ruin his already-strained relationship with Anakin.

For the hundredth time, Obi-Wan wondered if he was doing the right thing.

By this point, Obi-Wan knew this thought was becoming performative. A dilemma posed for his own sanity. This was because he had precedent for this particular type of betrayal.

His relationship with Anakin never fully recovered from the last time he died.

This is different, he repeated to himself when he laid back on the medical table. There will be no theatrical falls or fake funerals. Anakin probably… hopefully… never find out this ever happened.

The large needles that pressed into his head stung far worse than the last time. Obi-Wan’s eyes screwed shut as the facial transformation program initiated.

You’re still lying to him, though.

As far as his former padawan knew, Obi-Wan was deployed in the Outer Rim. He even sent a message that his comms would be limited due to interference from the planet’s atmosphere. That technically was the case with his flagship and the men aboard.

Technically.

There were lots of technicalities these days. Obi-Wan was getting rather tired of them.

Droid casualties were technically not loss of lives.

Jedi were technically trained for battle situations.

Obi-Wan was technically not breaking his promise to Anakin that he wouldn’t lie to him again.

Yet, here he is. One room over from where he was born again as Rako Hardeen the last time he was asked to perform a mission that was technically for the good of the galaxy. Obi-Wan had to be the one to undergo the procedure because he was technically the only one who could play the part accurately.

The machines finally stopped whirring and the pressure subsided. Obi-Wan remained lying back with his eyes shut until the throbbing of his head started to reduce.

What-ifs were already flooding his head. What if…

…the chancellor figures it out?

…the 501st is deployed with the 212th?

…I truly am killed on this mission?

…Anakin finds out?

Obi-Wan swallowed hard, finally inching his eyes open to adjust to the fluorescent overhead lamps. A medical droid hummed with satisfaction and then handed him a mirror.

“Facial transformation is complete. I will be right back with the voice modulator, Master Kenobi,” the droid said and buzzed away.

Obi-Wan held the mirror's reflective side down for a long moment. His stomach turned just thinking about the face he would see staring back at him. Every ounce of the Jedi wanted to call the council and tell him he couldn’t do this. As much as he tried to convince himself the reward was greater than the risk, Obi-Wan wasn’t sure anything was worth the pain it would bring to Anakin and the irreparable damage it would do to their already-strained bond.

I’ve allowed this to go too far. Even if Obi-Wan wanted to stop things, he knew too many pieces were in motion. Now, it truly was more dangerous for him to bail than to go through with the mission.

Chancellor Palpatine had been raising too many red flags with the Jedi Council. They needed more intel on his movements, but there were very few close enough to the ruler that would be willing to report on his private matters. The council suggested asking Anakin, but Obi-Wan quickly shut down their request. Anakin was fiercely loyal to those he cared about— the Chancellor was one of those lucky people.

Obi-Wan slowly turned the mirror around. The clean-shaven face that gradually came into view was horrifically familiar in a way that felt like a saber to the gut. Obi-Wan’s fingers quivered as they traced down the vertical scar that nearly took his right eye.

Forgive me, padawan.

Anakin himself would never betray the Chancellor.

But… perhaps the Chancellor would reveal his true character to one he believed was Anakin.

So I’ve finally finished season 4 of Clone Wars! Since the episode order is mostly lining up with the chronology, I can put my thoughts down into something resembling organized.

Mon Cala arc

-can that prince please not pronounce his own homeworld’s name like that? he calls it moan cala and i hate it

-it wasn’t necessary for the plot to work, but I’m curious about the history between the cala and the quarren. i wish we got some more details on why relations are tense

-the animators were clearly out of their depth (ha) with the setting. some parts felt like they didn’t know how to translate the usual fighting to an aquatic setting

-the story was satisfying, but I doubt this is anyone’s favorite set of episodes

-i can feel the gungans growing on me. not sure how I feel about that

Shadow Warrior

-how dare this show make gungans tolerable. coming into my home and making me okay with jar jar fucking binks

R2 and C3P0 duology

-some fun moments!

-would show it to my young cousins but at my age, it goes on a little too long. I’m not looking for/expecting deep meditations on war (American War by Omar el Akkad if that’s what you are interested in), but this is more in the kids show category than the family show one most episodes fall under

Umbara arc

-this is what I mean by being a family show vs a kids show

-I love this arc

-and Rex really gets fleshed out as a character in this one

-i didn’t get why people hated krell so much. i get it now. he’s like the umbridge of Star wars

-the tech designs for umbara and umbaran tech are pretty slick, i hope they get a cameo in live action some day

-the krell twist was. okay ig? it comes out of nowhere a bit. sure, he’s very strict on protocol and has a bone to pick with clones, but it’s said explicitly, more than once, that he gets results as a commander (paid for in casualties, but still successful). him being a relentless opportunist gets away from the clone thing, and i think digging into that could have been really interesting

Zygerrian Slave Empire

-hm

-not fond of the orientalist imagery in this one. won’t elaborate. i’ll say it’s personal for me and leave it at that

-how Anakin’s history as someone who was once literally enslaved should have been explored more

-this arc has its redeeming moments, but it also has a lot of wasted potential

-I might make a more in depth post someday, I have a lot of half formed thoughts about this one

Friend in Need

-this was a rewatch for me, I saw it when I was getting Mandalorian context for the Grogu and his working single father show

-I notice now that except for Bo Katan, deathwatch is all male. and to me, were implied to be sexually abusing the local women (the village leader mentions them having “taken” their women) maybe that’s what was meant by that infamous “they all died off years ago” re: exile of the warriors. no women, no offspring.

Crisis on Naboo arc

-ooh, I wish we get some more time on how Anakin was affected by Obi Wans faked death

-man, cad bane looks stupid without his hat. cover up that dome baby boy, you aren’t ventress, you cant pull the bald look off

-cad bane saving kenobi/hardeen in the Box. he’s a bad guy all right, but he isn’t entirely without honor. love that trope

-and I love palpatine’s scheming! glad to see a senior citizen staying active and involved

Ventress/Savage Oppress/Maul arc

-i love Assaj Ventress so much it’s unreal

-idc that the nightsisters are on the dark side. i love sisterhoods, i love witches, i love covens, it broke my heat to watch the separatists massacre them. at least mother talzin is still alive.

-i have so much Feeling for ventress. betrayed and abandoned again and again only to lose her sisters, and to feel like it’s her fault

-saving that girl from a forced marriage… ventress I love you.

-they should have let maul keep the spider legs, they looked cool

-I didn’t get the obsession with maul. I don’t really share it, but I do get it now. the raw drive for vengeance, his madness. I’m looking forward to where the writers take him

-obi wan and ventress are a great combo, their dialogue has a lot of chemistry

Hi, do you have any fic recs for Clone War fics where Ahsoka (and possibly Rex?) recognize that Anakin is a bad general/Jedi? I recently started rewatching TCW after my last time watching it, back when I was still a preteen, and I'm just shook at how much of an asshole and horrible general Anakin is?? I am quite literally on episode 6 of season!

Most of these are taken straight from my previous fic rec list specifically for anti-Anakin fics (there's others in there where other characters like Obi-Wan, Padme, and Fives figure out Anakin's a piece of shit too if that's up your alley).

and the tide rises, the tide falls series by blackkat: This one probably is going to fit your request the most since there is a LARGE focus on Rex and Ahsoka coming to terms with the Tusken massacre and what this means about who Anakin truly is and their relationships with him.

Wasted Training by TheSecondBatgirl: This one has Ahsoka getting some revelations about that training Anakin gave her in TOTJ being perhaps not so great.

The Burden of Secrets by Peppermint_Shamrock: This might be more Anakin-positive than you were looking for, but it deals with Ahsoka finding out about the Tusken massacre and how she deals with that. It also is set just after the Rako Hardeen arc, so there's some mentions of how Anakin isn't managing his feelings about that in a healthy way, too.

"... if you remain his student" by peppermint_shamrock: This one fits within the "Clone Wars" timeline by a hair since it is set DURING Order 66 in an AU where the Wrong Jedi arc doesn't happen (or Ahsoka just didn't leave, I can't remember) and so she's at the Temple when Anakin marches on it with the 501st. Ahsoka has to come to some VERY quick realizations about her master and doesn't get long to really dwell on it.

The next two are not TECHNICALLY set "during the Clone Wars" because one is set post-Order 66 and one is a happy fix-it AU set post-war. I am including them because they do definitely have storylines about Rex and/or Ahsoka having to come to some realizations about Anakin, but they don't technically fit your request.

Slices of Happiness series by kj_feybarn: This one is focused more on Obi-Wan, but there's some stuff in here about Rex coming to some realizations about Anakin, too.

The Greater Crime by kj_feybarn: This is set post-Order 66 in an AU where Rex and Ahsoka meet up with Obi-Wan and Padme and they all go on the run together, so obviously Rex and Ahsoka find out the truth about what Anakin's done pretty quickly and struggle with that revelation. It also has a follow-up fic Cruel by TheStageManager that's more Ahsoka focused.

Oh my, where to begin with this one. I am very nervous to let this one out of the safe embrace of my stories folder on my laptop and into the public, but I think I am finally satisfied with it. This has been in the works since…June(??) of 2022? Sometime around then? It has been my baby ever since. One plot bunny of an image of an angry Satine at a ball and 6,000 words later…here we are with quite possibly my favorite Obitine one-shot yet. It is best read while listening to some moody music, perhaps “Silver Springs” by Fleetwood Mac, or “Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve” by Taylor Swift…Set post-Rako Hardeen arc, at a senate gala. Another Wednesday, another WIP Wednesday!

This is from the post-Rako Hardeen arc I've been teasing for a while! Hoping to have the first chapter posted in the next few weeks... stay tuned!

Master Windu squeezed his shoulder firmly.  “We saved the Chancellor, that’s the important thing.  Skywalker will understand.  Now, let’s get you back to the Temple so that we can rid you of that ugly mug.  I’m tired of looking at it.  Even if your real face is only marginally better.” Obi-Wan forced a crooked smile onto his face in response to the barb.  But his thoughts were far, far away, in a speeder being driven at reckless speeds by a man with golden curls and a stony expression. Deep down, Obi-Wan knew that he had made a fatal, grievous error in judgment.  One that might very well cost him the most important friendship in his life. Could Anakin understand?

When everyone started pulling away and basically shunning Obi-Wan, he started pulling away too.

doing everything himself and even stopped asking for help, getting to the point of just taking solo missions solely for the reason of getting away from the “hostility” of his battalion and ex padawan.

He gets used to the loneliness, it’s not like that wasn’t his entire life before his battalion and Anakin. Unfortunately he gets to used to it, used to solo missions and no friends, he starts having trouble interacting with everyone normally.

Often shuffling away slowing to make reports and smiling awkwardly at them when he passes them, everyone hates it so much. They can’t stand watching him pull away, can’t stand him going on missions alone and often try bribing the council to put Obi-Wan with them.

people who think that tcw "fixed" the prequels need to actually examine the pt vs tcw for a while because. first of all girl what was there to fix? second of all how is tcw an improvement? what was changed for tcw that wasn't worse than the prequels?

obi wan was made to be a huge flirt who hits on everyone he meets which was not even a little bit supported by the pt and also was given a love interest for no other reason than to fridge her for his manpain (and also, apparently, to make him more “relatable”??? barf). plus the entire rako hardeen arc, in which obi wan is just a fucking horrible person who doesn’t care about his friends, i guess.

padme went from a strong and central character who was brave, powerful, and involved to being shoved to the side in favor of dave filoni's pet character and completely defanged. she’s ignored to the point where "prequel" (read: tcw) fans will say "the pt trio 🥰" and not even include her despite her being a main fucking character

anakin went from being a complex yet compelling character who genuinely loved padme, who was deeply compassionate for the most part, and who also was allowed to show emotions to being an controlling misogynistic asshole who's in mustafar mode at all times and doesn't have any emotions except for rage, lust, smugness, and embarrassment (because these are obviously the only emotions that men are capable of experiencing). i don't think he cries once in the series, which is wildly out of character on its own.

how is any of that “fixing” anything?? and everyone in the sw fandom stans tcw so hard that even if someone’s talking/writing about the events of the actual prequels, the shitty tcw characterization creeps its way in

In this one, Anakin left the Jedi Order after one of the major stress points during the Clone Wars. I haven't decided which one yet but major contenders include Felucia, Rako Hardeen, the debacle surrounding Fives' death, or even with Ahsoka after the Wrong Jedi arc. Obi-Wan remains and narrowly survives Order 66 similarly to canon.

Obi-Wan ends up joining the Empire with intent to be a double agent, but he hasn't really thought this through. He's lacking ties to the early faces of the eventual Rebel Alliance and mostly just wants to find Commander Cody Purge Trooper CC-2224. If you had a nickel for every post-Empire codobikin polycule plot I cooked up you'd have two nickels, etc etc.

After a while he actually does fall to the dark side, at which point Sidious begins to cram his face all over the holonet in a bid to lure Anakin back to the Core Worlds, all while still not letting Obi-Wan get anywhere near any chipped clones, let alone from the 212th or the 501st. Sidious is having the time of his life.

Except. Anakin learned more from Obi-Wan "we'll be fine as long as we stick together" Kenobi than anyone realized. He does not go in alone, and when he does attempt a rescue he manages to give the Emperor a lot more than he'd bargained for.

I’d love to see a sex pollen au! I know it has some similarities with a/b/o, but I just think there’s so much dRAMA potential in a universe where fuck-or-die is in fact not normal and not at all something obikin can foresee or prepare for. A tiny pocket of sexy chaos, if you will

Post Rako Hardeen arc, where Anakin isn’t speaking to Obi-Wan because obviously, and Obi-Wan isn’t speaking to Anakin because of Anakin’s obviously, but they get assigned a mission to the same planet but at different times. Anakin goes first and after a week with no communications, Obi-Wan follows.

That first week where Anakin was with the planet was spent making Anakin trust and like the people, because that’s when the sex drug is most effective and the planet’s people thought that if one of their own had the Chosen One’s kids they’d be set.

BUT then Obi-Wan sneaks away from the temple to see Anakin because it’s been so long without communication (a few days) and he’s worried about him (he is)

But he accidentally gets dosed too —maybe because the substance is sent through the vents instead of on food and he sneaks into anakin’s actual room to checkup on him? —and because the sex drug automatically directs its users to who they trust/trust the most in the vicinity, they both having sex

And then waking up sober the next morning, able to recall what happened but not able to really believe it

That would be the multi-part series (titled "Shadows on the Walls") post-Rako Hardeen long fic I've got in the works. It is actually the first fic I ever started to work on in the fandom!

The first part (titled 'I'm Losing It, and I'm Losing You Too) is a three-chapter hurt/no comfort set up that explores what happens directly after the Rako Hardeen arc. It's a gritty take on Anakin's reaction in the aftermath of such a deep betrayal by someone he inherently trusted. I'm hoping to finish all three chapters and post in one go!

It'll lead directly into a second part (titled "I'm Not Breathing, Only Bleeding"), which will be my first (ever) long fic. It's canon-divergence, going to explore Obi-Wan's pov and headspace as he slowly comes to some realizations too late, and battles his mental health after all of the loss and grief of his past finally become too much for him to compartmentalize. I know these details are vague, but I don't want to give away too much of the plot! 😜

I've been on one with @obikin-events Obikin Bingo this year. 😂 Hoping to dedicate 2024 to working on this series. Once all of these prompt ideas have vacated my brain.
