Returning to Tumblr
A lot has changed in four years.
So, without further ado, I think it is time I reintroduce myself. My online moniker is Gabriel Hex, also sometimes known as Wormwood. When I was on here last, I was the quaker solarpunk agorist guy, wanting to bring about a greener world through technology, the free market, and counter-economics.
I wouldn't quite say I grew out of it. That's just the wrong mindset I'm coming back here with. But since I originally quasi-"left", I became less utopic and political (well, perhaps more anti-political than nonpolitical), left Christianity, discovered Discordianism and Hellenic paganism, began practicing witchcraft, joined the rank of "Dad", started illustrating, made friends outside of the internet, and have become more critical of both capitalism and civilization, not to the extent of a primitivist, but enough to correctly call myself a post-civ anarchist.
My flannel years are behind me, but remembered fondly.
Nice to meet you again.

In the last two years I'm more and more immersed in the topic of solarpunk and I think I'll stay there. It is the only future that makes sense.

This is a poem/essay based on my experience with antidepressants. I hope it rings true for someone else too!
On Chemicals
Popular science likes to point fingers at people with mental illness and say,
“If only you transmitted serotonin a bit better—“
“If only your dopamine system responded to slightly more favorable stimuli—“
“If only you had a bit less GABA in the mix—“
In doing this, Science says, “your illness is because of you. There is something wrong with you. You must be fixed.” (Whether he intends to say this or not.)
I have a different theory.
(Oh, but first:
Nothing is wrong with you.
Nothing is wrong with you.
Nothing is wrong with you!!!)
Now:
You wake up in an empty bed in an empty house.
Dopamine splutters. There should be Community here. Oxytocin searches for mother and lover. Epinephrine seeks physical touch.
But you are in a big empty bed in a big empty house and there is nothing.
Now you go outside. It’s smoke and concrete and metal. Oxytocin cries for deep soil. Serotonin tries to squeeze itself from the hate and cold and rape where there should be love and reciprocity and relationship. But it’s not magic, it’s just serotonin, and after years of this treatment it’s weak, and the smoke has blotted out the stars and they are dead, and so are you.
You go to work. You do labor you do not enjoy, for people who do not care about you, for bits of paper that hold no joy, that are not sacred, that mean nothing at all. Endorphins scream and claw at their cage but there is no place for them here. Dopamine gasps at cigarette smoke and happy hour drinks and late night blunts and tries, tries, to keep you alive. That is all it can do, because it is almost dead.
That’s when you hear it, a low distant scream from everywhere around you and inside you all at once,
this is wrong.
This is wrong.
This is all wrong.
(They want you to believe you are imagining this. You are not imagining it.)
It is not an imbalance of dopamine and seratonin and norepinephrine and GABA in the individual brain that has caused the epidemic of depression and anxiety and substance abuse in our culture.
It’s an imbalance of the stimuli that produce these neurotransmitters.
Imbalance is even a generous word for it. Purposeful extermination is more apt.
We know exactly how the brain responds to bright sunshine and green grass and towering oaks and sea air and ripe berries and freedom and reciprocity.
We know exactly how the brain responds to subjugation and concrete and smoke and poverty and difficult decisions and constant stress and lack of sleep and isolation from community and trauma, trauma, trauma.
(We’ve always known this. We didn’t need science to prove it for us. But the fact that it did anyway ought to be enough to convince you!)
But we don’t want people to know that the world gives them everything they need. We need them to think that they need us—the masters, the bosses, the bourgeoise, whatever you want to call them.
So we take away their ability to make themselves happy, and sell them Effexor and Ritalin and Prozac, and it doesn’t work so they buy booze and clothes and kitchenware and plants and tell themselves it’s going to be okay, and we Profit.
(And they Die.)
