So i keep leaving that 2015 molson show on in the background. I think Lana's best when most of the lyrics aside from the hooks are just wordlike warbles. Like the latest development in my career as a listener is i just noticed chelsea hotel and in my mind the only words are i remember you at the chelsea hotel. The rest is postfolk prisencolinensinaincuisol. I have no clue. And eventually I'll catch myself singing just the words "at the chelsea hotel" too many times and look up the lyrics and somehow theyll leave me agog and I'll marvel at how good the song was as a hypnogogic slurry of mondegreenery.

Like brooklyn baby is a great song when its just a bunch of phonetically impenetrable evocations of sentiment with the words "i get high on hydroponic weed" and "because im a brooklyn baby" thrown in. Then you look up the lyrics and its all "You're up, I'm down, you're blind, I see" and "my boyfriend's pretty cool, but he's not as cool as me" and shit and its like... how do i delete a memory

Oh right chelsea hotel is a cover.

I read the lyrics. I should just point to cohen on this one whenever the ethics of telling personal stories that intersect with the personal stories (and privacy rules) of others, comes up. Like joplin cant shuffle up to a mic and say "that wasnt only your own story to be telling for the atmosphere of it" OR "great song lenny". Just a weird trip. Like admittedly he's not haunted by her death, and touring his memories of her alive, inviting us to voyerize, feels kind of cynical or callous in a way that seems to be caught in the song's aestheticization dragnet. Very on-brand for lana. We're decorating a corpse but is it in veneration, or just decorousness for its own sake? Are we doing a complicated ode to the subject or ourselves and if its the latter isnt the subject more the object (of the song)? And if thats consciously done i just go back to: thats so cynical and now im being fed the cynicism as artistic veneer. I dunno how tasty this is.

Am i actually going to end up compulsively learning to approximate the vocals for yet another dubious lana del rey joint....? God you know what was a good song? WAP.
