Asked and Answered: Russian Ballet
Honest question, do you think there’s a chance Kovaleva won’t be promoted to prima after all? Her repertoire is astoundingly limited... is it possible that newly-promoted Marchenkova will overtake her?
I have no idea what will happen. But I wouldn’t say Kovaleva’s repetoire is limited, especially as she is so ill-suited for what she does do. I will say that I see two openings for principal women at the Bolshoi in the next five years. Who will it be? Well, favor changes quickly there...
(Contd from last message re: Bolshoi v Mariinsky) can you BELIEVE than Nagahisa got JULIET?????? What’s next??? Nikiya for Lukina, Aurora for Nagahisa, Raymonda for Ionova and O/O for Nuikina?
Given the incompetence of the directing of the theatre, I fully suspect all these will eventually happen... But if the question wasn’t rhetorical, I’d say Aurora for Nagahisa and O/O for Nuikina are soonest in our future. Barf.
Honestly I’m amazed at all the roles 2nd soloists at the Mariinsky get versus Bolshoi soloists.... I mean, Giselle for both Lukina and Nagahisa??? One of the heaviest principal roles?!?! Gamzatti for Nuikina? Meanwhile the only principal role Denisova has danced is Phrygia, Zhiganshina danced Gamzatti and both have been with the company for longer than the Mariinsky girls I mentioned. even Sevenard who is so hyped up hasn’t danced any principal role besides Kitri. And Kitri is objectively entry level, it’s not comparable in difficulty with Giselle. IMO the Bolshoi policy is much more prudent, I really like how they’re handling young dancers rn (perhaps they have learnt from the Kovaleva mess...?)
The structure of the Mariinsky is absolute f****ed up. Their ranks have basically been rendered meaningless. They have about four women who actually dance as principals, and yet almost all of the first soloists dance almost if not more frequently (as they dance principal AND soloist roles) for less prestige and of course, less money. If you’re going to cast people consistently in leading roles, then promote them so they can have something to show for it. It’s disgraceful to not give these dancers the rank they deserve.
I agree the Bolshoi is leaning towards being miles better in this regard, though it hasn’t always been the case. I hope the trend continues.
Regarding maria khoreva’s promotion, I think I saw someone say (I forgot who or where) that they suspect that Fateyev keeps promoting her to keep her at Mariinsky. She’s a major talent and they probably want to push her as the next Lopatkina or at least Tereshkina (god forbid but you know what I mean). But she’s very famous especially on social media with digital marketing, Instagram, Tiktok, etc. and has a lot of connections and clout overseas in the West. Basically any company would be happy to take her and she would instantly be an international star (with her level of dancing and being in a Western company) so Fateyev is desperate to keep her at Mariinsky so he attempts to appease her with leading roles and the rank of first soloist. Maybe this is something really obvious that everyone already knows but I never thought of it this way before and I think it makes a lot of sense.
Yes and I do really respect her business acumen and ability to sell herself for what people consider her worth as a young woman. However, I think she and the companies are very misguided in thinking that this is the way that ballet companies should be structured and careers made.
Ohhh my GOD. This might seem a bit random but I honestly don’t know where else to talk about this (I’ll confront the people I’m about to talk about below but just thought sharing this here is quite important). So I run a Krysanova fan account on IG, recently posted a video of her fouettés. Someone reposted them on Twitter with the caption “Europeans” and someone else replied “Black culture: twerking” which they liked. I clicked into their account, they claim to be “pro-White” (now what the fuck is that?) and to “inspire, bring hope and joy to Whites” and they post content of European women. That’s fine and dandy, I love European culture but newsflash! Not all Europeans are White! And they didn’t even ask me for permission or credit me (just like how Europeans stole, invaded and colonized Indigenous peoples and their lands ahem) but that’s not even the worse. They apparently posted some photos that have Sw*stik*s in them (and deleted them promptly afterwards) and they went on some Youtube video of two Black women talking about dating and marriage in Iceland and harassed them saying Icelandic people find it disgusting, that they’re promoting “White replacement”... They also retweeted this account who is basically a White Supremacist spewing nonsense and hate to POC, especially the Black community. Saying White people are “being attacked”, defending H*tl*r, N*z*sm and racism, that POC perpetuate violent crime, drugs and prostitution, that Europe should only belong to “Indigenous Europeans” and it’s appalling that POC are “replacing White people” etc.. It hurts and disgusts me to see ballet, such a beautiful art form empowering and uplifting so many people around the world, being fucking weaponized and perverted into something that endorses such a vile belief and worldview. I know this might seem super random in your ask box, It was just one account that I’ve seen so far, I don’t know if this has been going on for a long time in their wider community of racist fucks but this is certainly the first time I have seen it and I’m SICK. I REALLY hope exploiting ballet for their disgusting purposes is not an actual phenomenon but it probably is :(
I’m sorry this happened to you. I don’t think it’s a widespread phenomena though, fortunately.

Could you maybe make a post with some of the most inspiring Daredevil pages? Stuff like him overcoming the Purple Man making him more depressed and hopeless in Waid's run, or the "I am Daredevil, and I am not Afraid." page from Soule's run. Those kind of pages always help me when I'm feeling down, it would be cool to see more in that vein.
I love this request, and yes, I can definitely do that! I draw a lot of inspiration from Daredevil too (and superhero comics in general; that’s one of the purposes of the genre, in my experience), and refusing to give up when everything is falling apart is one of Matt’s trademark moves. Here are a few of my favorite moments– and I’m including the ones you mentioned, since I love them and want to make sure other people have seen them too.
Tumblr media
[ID: The Kingpin is brutally beating up Matt, who is in civvies. Matt falls on his back, his face bloody.]
Matt: “Never give up– never–”
Let’s start with a classic:
Tumblr media
[ID: Daredevil is fighting Namor. He tries electrocuting him, but the blast knocks him to the ground. As Namor walks away, Daredevil reaches out and grabs his ankle before passing out.]
Namor: “This is madness!! Does your own life mean nothing to you!?? Have you no sense of fear??”
Matt: “Sure! But I seem to have carelessly misplaced it somewhere! Now, just stand there for a second, fella– I want to try something!”
Caption: “Taking one last desperate gamble, Daredevil joins the two live wires, hoping to stagger his super-human foe! […] But, once again, the power of the Sub-Mariner is greater than any could suppose, and it is he who recovers first– while the Man Without Fear, despite his insulated gloves– lies weak, and dazed, and helpless…! Yet, how can one measure the limitless courage of a fellow human? Although on the brink of unconsciousness– although racked with pain and fatigue– still the sightless crusader reaches out–!”
Matt: “Come back! You– you mustn’t fight the others–! They’re innocent– mustn’t be harmed– mustn’t–!”
Namor: “[…] I have fought the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, and other super-powered humans, but none has been more courageous than he, the most vulnerable of all! And out of respect to the courage of Daredevil, I shall not injure any humans! I shall fly above the waiting armed forces– and return to the sea where I am supreme!”
Daredevil vol. 1 #7 by Stan Lee and Wally Wood
The issue that introduced the red Daredevil costume also crafted one of the first memorable depictions of Matt’s boundless resilience. Namor the Sub-Mariner comes ashore to sue the human race, and hires Nelson and Murdock to represent him. When the situation goes awry, Namor becomes violent, and Matt tries to subdue him. While he gets thoroughly thrashed in this fight, Matt’s persistence impresses Namor enough to make him leave the human race alone (for now). That image of a nearly-unconscious Daredevil clinging to Namor’s ankle is fairly iconic, with– I feel– good reason.
Tumblr media
[ID: The Hulk backhands Daredevil a good distance, where he crashes into some trash cans. He is injured and bleeding, but he struggles back to his feet as the Hulk stands over him, deciding whether or not to finish him off.]
Hulk: “NO! Banner made the Hulk a monster and Hulk will find him, even if it takes forever!”
Matt: “Hulk… *koff*… you won’t find Banner… *koff*… this way. You can’t… *koff*… find Banner this way. The police… the authorities.. I-I want to help them understand… *koff*… and… *koff* … I want to help you. …But you’ll have to trust me.”
Daredevil vol. 1 #163 by Roger McKenzie, Frank Miller, and Glynis Wein
This is, thematically, a very similar situation to the first scene. The Hulk goes on a rampage and Matt tries to stop him. Just as in the Namor situation, Matt loses this fight– he is nearly beaten to death, and is confined to a hospital bed for quite a while afterward– but his courage breaks through the Hulk’s rage enough to calm him down. This is a recurring theme in their friendship. Matt first meets Bruce Banner when he is hired to represent the Hulk in court, and from the beginning, Matt has been vocal in his support of Bruce and sympathy for the Hulk. Despite the danger, Matt never hesitates to put himself within smashing distance of the Hulk for the sake of helping him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: A taxi is resting at the bottom of a river with its hood bashed in. Matt Murdock is unconscious in the front seat. We see a close-up of his eyes as they open in a defiant glare. The next few panels show the Kingpin standing at a window looking out, and photos of the cab after it has been pulled out of the river.]
Caption: “Unconscious but living, Murdock is placed in a stolen checker cab… The cab is driven off Pier 41 into the East River. Its safety belt and doors are corroded shut by a chemical process that is identical to rust. Murdock is drenched in whiskey. A bottle, open, is laid in his lap. The owner of the cab is beaten to death by Murdock’s stolen billy club. Days pass into weeks. Still Murdock is never far from the crimelord’s thoughts. He imagines one last, terrible moment of realization… of Murdock thrashing wildly, desperately, hatefully… screaming soundlessly into the poisoned water… The Kingpin shudders at the thought, in pleasure… The world seems flooded with sunlight. Daily business becomes a joyous, childlike game. He has disgraced, destroyed and murdered the only good man he has ever known. This is his triumph of the spirit.
“At last the cab is discovered. There is blood, and bloody evidence of a struggle. There is a shattered windshield… a safety belt, severed by the windshield’s glass and what must have been a hideous effort of will. There is no corpse.”
Daredevil vol. 1 #228 by Frank Miller, David Mazzucchelli, and R. Lewis
This is, of course, from the famous “Born Again” arc, and I had a hard time choosing a scene, since the whole story is essentially a seven-issue-long depiction of Matt being knocked down and then standing back up. (I highly recommend reading it if anyone hasn’t, and I also summarized it here. I also cheated by including another scene at the beginning of this post…). However, the scene above is a turning point and possibly my favorite moment in the whole story. At this point Matt has lost it all: his friends, his career, his reputation, his money, and his home. In a fit of desperate, delirious anger, he attacks the Kingpin, who beats him unconscious and then– in the scene above– tries to kill him once and for all. The above issue starts with Matt curled up on a bed in a hotel room, unable to force himself to even move. He seems thoroughly beaten, and the Kingpin assumes the same, which is why he decides to stop toying with his victim and just finish the job. But in spite of all of this, Matt freaking Murdock refuses to die, and he somehow finds the strength to physically fight his way out of this seemingly unsurvivable situation. The fact that we don’t see him do it– that we only get the Kingpin’s reaction and that panel of Matt’s defiant glare after regaining consciousness– makes this act of resilience all the more powerful.
Tumblr media
[ID: Daredevil is fighting the Vulture (the Spider-Man villain). Daredevil pins him to the ground and starts punching him in the face.]
Matt: “A while ago, you said I secretly wanted to die. You were wrong. Cowards want to die. I’m no coward. I’m proving it– to you and to myself– by beating you… you– and everything you represent… the death and decay that eat away at a man until he surrenders… the horror that pulls you down into the pit! Well, I’m not the surrendering kind, mister! Got that? I never give up!”
Daredevil vol. 1 #225 by Denny O’Neil, David Mazzucchelli, and Ken Feduniewicz
Matt is not at all a suicidal person (I’ve seen some fans claim otherwise, but he really isn’t), and this scene comes from a rare issue that covers that topic. It takes place shortly after Heather Glenn’s suicide, and it explores how the spectre of her death haunts Matt and Foggy’s lives afterward. In this story, the concept of death is represented by the Vulture, who Matt discovers trying to rob Heather’s grave. Later, he appears at the offices of Nelson and Murdock, which have just gone bankrupt. Upset by this loss, Foggy wanders up to the roof and contemplates his life, at which point he encounters the Vulture. Matt, fearing that Foggy might kill himself, goes up after him in costume and tries to fight the Vulture off. For a moment, during the fight, Matt contemplates whether he actually wants to lose, before returning to his senses and defeating both the Vulture and his own dark thoughts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: Daredevil is fighting a huge crowd of grotesque-looking demons while carrying a lit torch. He holds up the torch and the demons scatter.]
Matt: “My whole life, endless fighting. What a fate. I wonder, could I change that fate? No matter how many I kill, they keep on coming.”
Mephisto: “Ha ha ha ha ha! I love it! That’s it, you big hero. Keep fighting. Fight till you drop that torch.”
Matt: “What if… what if I just stopped? If I just stopped fighting. If you stop fighting, isn’t the fight over? Yes. Yes, yes, yes. They can’t touch me. Okay, Mephisto. I’m coming for you. You made a mistake. You believe your evil breaks a man. Sometimes it does. But when it doesn’t break a man– it makes him even stronger.”
Daredevil vol. 1 #281 by Ann Nocenti, John Romita Jr., and Christie Scheele
This is from Matt’s literal trip to Hell in Nocenti’s run (Hell is a cosmic setting in the Marvel universe, and Mephisto is a recurring antagonist, so this isn’t quite as bizarre as it sounds…). While trapped in a seemingly endless wasteland and attacked by hoards of demons, Matt musters enough free will and spirit (as represented by the fire he’s carrying) to not only survive, but to actually challenge Mephisto. It’s great.
Tumblr media
[ID: Matt is crouched on the side of a building at night, in the rain. He is wearing the Daredevil suit but has taken the mask off. He puts his hand to his face in emotional anguish.]
Matt: “I’ve got to pull myself together. My world is falling apart and I am helping it every single step of the way. I have to focus. Focus. Foggy is right. My entire life– everything is up for grabs. Everything I’ve built– everything I am– can be taken away from me. Have to center my energies. Have to think. Focus. Center and focus. Center and focus. Don’t listen to their camera motors and their cell phones. Don’t listen to them. The phone calls. All I hear is my name over and over: Murdock. Murdock, Murdock. That name is not theirs to say. It’s not theirs! It’s mine. They’re stealing it from me. No! Stop it. Center and focus. Center and focus. Center and–”
Mugging victim (off-panel): Noooo!”
Matt: “Focus.”
Daredevil vol. 2 #35 by Brian Michael Bendis, Alex Maleev, and Matt Hollingsworth
I love this little moment from Bendis’s run. It’s small and subdued, but highly moving in the context of what Matt is dealing with in this story. His identity has been made public, there are crowds of reporters camped outside his home, his entire life is at risk of falling apart, but he takes this second to pause, think, and regain some sense of control.
Tumblr media
[ID: Matt stands up and prepares to fight. He is armed with two tonfa, and is wearing black clothes reminiscent of his Man Without Fear costume, but without a mask. His head is bandaged.]
Matt: “You think you can… turn me into a blubbering wreck… by preying on my fears… but I’ve already faced them– and come out the other side! You understand me, Calavera? I know what I am… who I am… and I am not afraid!”
Daredevil: Reborn #4 by Andy Diggle, Davide Gianfelice, and Matt Hollingsworth
The Reborn mini-series follows Matt’s attempt at emotional recovery in the aftermath of “Shadowland”. Having quite literally lost his identity and had his spirit broken by getting possessed by a demon, he goes out west and, through helping right some wrongs in a small town in New Mexico, he reaffirms his sense of self.
Tumblr media
[ID: A stormy winter night. Ferry pilots (Sid and Ronnie, off-panel) are waiting for Daredevil to resurface from the river. As their ferry moves away, Daredevil hauls himself out of the freezing water and onto a dock.]
Sid: “It’s been a while, Ronnie– think he’s still down there?”
Ronnie: “Sid– you a moron? Where else would he be?”
Sid: “Beats me. Just askin’. It’s too bad– looks like he went back down there for nothin’. ‘Cept maybe to die.”
Ronnie: “Well, I’m not givin’ up just yet.”
Sid: “No? Why not?”
Ronnie: “’Cause I don’t think he would.”
Daredevil: Dark Nights #2 by Lee Weeks and Lee Loughridge
The first Dark Nights story is a celebration of Matt’s willpower, as he travels through a blizzard to deliver a heart transplant to a dying little girl. I particularly love this scene, in which Matt dives into the river to rescue the heart and the pilots transporting it from their crashed helicopter, and despite the cold and his exhaustion, he powers through and survives the experience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: Daredevil is bleeding and horribly injured, and crouched in the mud under a bridge. The Purple Man is standing above him, about to hit him with a plank of wood.]
Purple Man: “Shouldn’t you be angry? Shouldn’t you put up a struggle?”
Matt (caption): “But that’s how far down the pit I’ve fallen. I can’t even respond to his orders.
Purple Man: “Come on. This is too easy. Don’t rob me of a victory I’ve waited years for.”
Matt (caption): “All I can do is sink into the blackness. I can’t feel pain. I can’t  move because I have nothing to push against. Nothing.”
Purple Man: “Show me some fear.”
[ID: Daredevil kicks the Purple Man, then falls back to his knees. ]
Matt (caption): “That. That, I know how to fight. Get up. You have momentum now. Don’t lose it. Don’t let the shadows pull you back in. Inertia is the enemy. Do something. Move. Move, Matthew.”
Daredevil vol. 4 #10 by Mark Waid, Chris Samnee, and Matt Wilson
I’m glad you mentioned this scene because it’s one of my favorites too, as is this story arc as a whole. Waid’s depiction of depression is visceral and heartrending because it’s something he himself suffers from, and that realism makes Matt’s struggle to move forward and fight against his despair all the more impactful.
As an extension of the above moment, Matt’s decision to talk with Kirsten at the end of the issue (which I discussed at length here) is also breathtaking.
Tumblr media
[ID: A black page with a red heart monitor readout at the bottom. It flatlines, then spikes once.]
Matt (caption): “I cannot see the light. So I will be the light. I am Daredevil. And I am not afraid.”
Daredevil vol. 5 #612 by Charles Soule and Phil Noto
And this moment– there’s nothing more badass than Matt literally willing himself back to life! “I am Daredevil. And I am not afraid” is a refrain that is repeated throughout Soule’s run, which is a neat way of tying his run together and emphasizing Matt’s relentless determination.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: Matt is alone in a gym, struggling to walk between two parallel bars. He falls, then, with a huge effort, pulls himself back up.]
Jack (off-panel): “Fear’s of no use to us, Matt. We have to live with it, but it’s not for anything. But pain? What’s pain for, Matt? What’s pain for?”
Matt: “Pain keeps us going.”
Man Without Fear vol. 2 #5 by Jed MacKay, Danilo Beyruth, and Andres Mossa
The new Man Without Fear was another great recovery story, and gave us this really great moment when Matt, after suffering through the physical and emotional destruction of being hit by a truck, finally regains his fighting spirit.
I also wanted to include a few scenes of other people being inspired by Matt’s courage and resilience, because there are some great ones. Here’s one of my favorites, from Waid’s run:
Tumblr media
[ID: Foggy is sitting in a circle with a group of fellow cancer patients. They are all wearing Daredevil shirts.]
Foggy: “Ah, excellent. You all dressed for the occasion. I’ll be straight up with you folks. I have a friend. He’s probably the bravest man I’ve ever met. And no matter how much I beg him to teach me to be like him… in the whole time I’ve known him, I’ve learned only one thing about fearlessness: it’s contagious.”
Daredevil vol. 3 #31 by Mark Waid, Chris Samnee, and Javier Rodriguez
I love this aspect of Foggy’s cancer plotline– the fact that Foggy uses Matt as a source of inspiration for facing his own fear. These two have always been emotional anchors for each other, providing moral support and guidance in difficult times, and that’s part of what makes their friendship so powerful. Here, Foggy is largely on his own. Matt can’t punch cancer, and Foggy doesn’t even tell him about the symptoms at first. But from the very beginning, Foggy latches onto Matt’s fearlessness as a way of fending off his own terror about the diagnosis. As I said at the beginning of the post, part of the purpose of superhero stories is to serve as inspiration for their readers to be kind and courageous in their own lives, and it’s wonderful when characters within those stories are impacted in that same way by the superheroes around them. To take this concept one meta step further, Foggy’s cancer story– the whole thing, including his drawing strength from his best friend– is in itself a hero story for readers who may be going through similar experiences.
Tumblr media
[ID: Flashback panels colored in black and white with hints of red. Matt (in civvies) is attacked by a group of ninjas on a city street. He fights them while Foggy runs and hides around a corner.]
Foggy (caption): “When you were around, it was different. The fear wasn’t so real. I was still freaked whenever anything happened… my nerves were a car wreck… but even as I was sweating bullets, I somehow knew I was safe. Because of you.”
Daredevil vol. 2 #88 by Ed Brubaker, Michael Lark, David Aja, and Frank D’Armata
…And another great Foggy and Matt scene, this one from “The Secret Life of Foggy Nelson”, one of my favorite issues of Brubaker’s run. Foggy has been separated from Matt against his will, and in his isolation and fear, he reflects on their friendship and draws strength from Matt’s example.
Tumblr media
[ID: Luke Cage is sitting comfortably in a chair, legs crossed, directly addressing the reader.]
Luke: “Daredevil. I know him pretty well, actually. Well, as well as he lets anyone know him. End of the day, without question, he’s one of the best. Ever. Im not going to get into who he is and how he became who he became. And I know there are a lot of people who think they know all there is to know about Daredevil and all of his secrets. But I can tell you from personal experience that the information that’s out there about him is pretty much crap. Let’s just leave it at that. All you need to know about Daredevil is that this man has sacrificed everything to try to make this city safer. He has lost more and suffered more for his dedication to you than, well, anybody I know. And I know some people who’ve suffered and lost. He ain’t the strongest of us, and he ain’t the flashiest… but Daredevil cannot be brought down. It cannot happen.”
New Avengers vol. 2 #16 by Brian Michael Bendis, Mike Deodato, and Rain Beredo
And last but not least, here an excerpt from a great speech Luke Cage gives after Matt joins the Avengers. Even other superheroes– all of whom tend toward superhuman resilience– are impressed by Matt.

The mother of a Norco Marine killed in Afghanistan has blasted President Joe Biden on social media, saying the president rolled his eyes when meeting with families of slain service members and that her son’s blood is on his hands.
Shana Chappell’s post about Lance Cpl. Kareem M. Nikoui caught the attention of former President Donald Trump. She also criticized Biden on Instagram and said her Instagram account was deleted “because i gained so many followers over my (son’s) death due to Biden’s negligence, ignorance and him being a traitor!”
In an emailed statement, Facebook, which owns Instagram, expressed its condolences to Chappell and her family and said her “tribute to her heroic son does not violate any of our policies. While the post was not removed, her account was incorrectly deleted and we have since restored it.”
Nikoui, 20, was one of 13 service members and at least 60 Afghans who died Thursday, Aug. 26, when a suicide bomber attacked a gate outside Kabul’s airport, where thousands of Afghans were trying to flee the Taliban ahead of the U.S. withdrawal.
Chappell addressed Biden directly in a Monday, Aug. 30, Facebook post.
Tumblr media
“Remember i am the one who stood 5 inches from your face and was letting you know i would never get to hug my son again, hear his laugh and then you tried to interrupt me and give me your own sob story and i had to tell you ‘that this isn’t about you so don’t make it about you!!!,” she wrote.
“You then said you just wanted me to know that you know how i feel and i let you know that you don’t know how i feel and you do not have the right to tell me you know how i feel! U then rolled your (expletive) eyes in your head like you were annoyed with me and i let you know that the only reason i was talking to you was out of respect for my son and that was the only reason why …”
The White House press office did not immediately respond Wednesday morning to requests for comment.
Biden, Chappell wrote, “turned to walk away and i let you know my sons (sic) blood was on your hands and you threw your hand up behind you as you walked away from me like you were saying ok whatever!!! You are not the president of the United States of America Biden!!!!”
Later, she wrote that, as the bodies of her son and other fallen service members were being offloaded after being flown into Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, Biden “(disrespected) us all 5 different times by checking (his) watch!!!”
Chappell, whose Facebook page includes photos of her with pro-Trump slogans, vowed that Biden “will be seeing me again” after she lays her son to rest. She could not be immediately reached for comment Wednesday, Sept. 1.
On Instagram, Chappell posted photos of Biden walking away and of an empty presidential podium with the caption “What a disgrace.”

In an email to supporters Tuesday night, Trump wrote that Chappell “(is) 100% correct. If I were President, your wonderful and beautiful son Kareem would be with you now, and so would the sons and daughters of others, including all of those who died in the vicious Kabul airport attack.”
“Civilians should have been brought out first, along with our $85 billion of equipment, with the Military coming out very safely after all was clear,” Trump added. “I love you, and I love Kareem.”
Besides Nikoui, two other Southern California Marines — Lance Cpl. Dylan R. Merola, 20, of Rancho Cucamonga and Cpl. Hunter Lopez, 22, of Indio — died in the Kabul airport attack.
The region responded to the Marines’ deaths with vigils and memorials, including a community hike in Norco and a remembrance ceremony staged Tuesday night, Aug. 31, in Murrieta. Nikoui graduated from Norco High School in 2019 after serving in the campus Air Force Jr. ROTC.

Rep. Paul Gosar Tweets Fake Image of Obama With Iranian Leader
Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) is under fire after tweeting out a doctored image of President Barack Obama with Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani.
Gosar, a Republican with a penchant for creating controversy, shared the image on Monday with the caption, “The world is a better place without these two in power.” He was immediately criticized given that the image was doctored and Rouhani is still in power, serving as Iran’s president.

First, it was reporters from news outlets across the country who fact-checked Gosar in real-time.

1. This photo is fake (photoshopped) 2. The man on the left is Hassan Rouhani, who is still President of Iran 3. It's embarrassing that you are a United States Congressman https://t.co/ikREslNV3K
— Judd Legum (@JuddLegum) January 6, 2020
How sad is it that a member of Congress tweets a photoshopped image? Obama and Iran's Rouhani spoke by phone but never met in person. https://t.co/HTifrQ95tE
— Glenn Kessler (@GlennKesslerWP) January 6, 2020
Then some politicians got in on the criticism, too. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Mn.) shared the tweet, calling it “shameless” and insisting Gosar “do better.”
The GOP’s commitment to the distribution and trafficking of misinformation is alarming. This is a sitting member of Congress sharing a photoshopped image of President Obama. Congressman, this is disgraceful and shameless act, do better! https://t.co/v6wzJhF2jq
— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) January 6, 2020
Gosar responded to Omar, saying it didn’t “mean squat” to be “scolded from someone recently voted the No. 1 anti-Semite.” He called the photo “an artistic expression of Obama’s support for a terrorist regime.” Gosar also took issue with the reporters who called out the fake picture, claiming he knew it was photoshopped.
1. To the dim witted reporters like @dmedin11: no one said this wasn’t photoshopped. No one said the president of Iran was dead. No one said Obama met with Rouhani in person. The tweet says: “the world is a better place without either of them in power”. https://t.co/zwLPPXniQh
— Paul Gosar (@DrPaulGosar) January 6, 2020
While it’s unclear whether Gosar knew the photo was fake or not, The Washington Post reported that it was “the third time in two months that the lawmaker has tweeted conspiratorial messages or misinformation.” He also posted an acrostic that spelled out Epstein Didn’t Kill Himself on his account, and even shared a now-deleted tweet claiming that George Soros’s son was the whistleblower that set off the impeachment inquiry.
Gosar continued to defend his tweet, which is still live on his account, throughout the day.
“The point remains to all but the dimmest,” Gosar said on Twitter. “Obama coddled, appeased, nurtured and protected the worlds No. 1 sponsor of terror.”

Political leaders demand answers in Epstein death

Political leaders demand answers in Epstein death

Political leaders are demanding a full accounting of how disgraced financier and accused pedophile Jeffrey Epstein died by apparent suicide in a Manhattan jail early Saturday.
“We need answers. Lots of them,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) wrote on Twitter, expressing concern in a separate retweet about the impact of Epstein’s death on the pending criminal case against him and on his alleged victims.
Story Continued Below
“The death of Jeffrey Epstein does not end the need for justice for his victims or the right of the public to know why a prolific child molester got a slap on the wrist instead of a long prison sentence,” said Democratic Rep. Lois Frankel, whose Florida district is home to the oceanfront Palm Beach mansion where Epstein is said to have sexually abused dozens of underage girls.
Frankel encouraged the House Oversight Committee to “begin its investigation immediately” into a 2008 plea agreement that allowed Epstein to avoid federal sex trafficking charges. The deal was overseen by then-U.S. Attorney Alex Acosta, who served as Labor secretary for the Trump administration until his resignation last month.
Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.), a member of the Oversight Committee, said the congressional panel “has a duty to ensure all those who played a role in this travesty of justice answer to those crimes.” Speier tore into law enforcement officials, prosecutors and acquaintances of Epstein “who looked the other way” or enabled him to “evade accountability because he was rich, powerful, and well-connected.”
“This whole country is based on the notion that we’re all created equal and that we should all be treated equally under the law, and that clearly isn’t happening,” former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, a 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, said in a Fox News segment about Epstein’s death.
“You don’t have to look far to find places where those who are successful and wealthy and powerful, they get a better deal when they get in trouble,” Hickenlooper added.
Epstein, 66, pleaded not guilty last month to new charges of sex trafficking and faced up to 45 years in prison if convicted. In late July, he was found unresponsive in his jail in what appeared to be a suicide attempt.
“It is inexcusable that this rapist was not under constant suicide watch,” said Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.), adding that the government has “failed” Epstein’s victims, who “deserved to face their serial abuser in court.” It is unclear whether Epstein was placed on suicide watch in July, though the correctional facility where Epstein was located said in a statement Saturday that he had been staying in a “Special Housing Unit” at the time of his death.
“The FBI is investigating the incident,” the statement read.
U.S. Attorney General William Barr also announced the opening of an investigation into Epstein’s death by the Justice Department’s Inspector General, saying he was “appalled” to learn of the development.
“Mr. Epstein’s death raises serious questions that must be answered,” Barr said in a statement.
Epstein’s decades-long connections to wealthy and powerful figures in the U.S. and abroad — including President Donald Trump, former President Bill Clinton and Britain’s Prince Andrew — prompted a slew of conspiracy theories to emerge Saturday.
Lynne Patton, a senior official at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, posted a photo of Epstein to her personal Instagram with the caption, “Hillary’d!! P.S. Let me know when I’m supposed to feel badly about this. #VinceFosterPartTwo.” Foster, who served as White House counsel, became the subject of many Clinton-era conspiracies after he committed suicide in July 1993.
A HUD spokesperson could not be reached for comment.
CNN commentator Ana Navarro described Epstein’s death as “convenient… for the many rich and powerful,” while MSNBC host Joe Scarborough suggested that “powerful Democratic and Republican figures [are] breathing a huge sigh of relief.”
Epstein’s death occurred hours after a federal appeals court on Friday unsealed nearly 2,000 pages of records related to the wealthy Manhattan businessman and British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell, who became involved with Epstein romantically and allegedly helped recruit and groom young women for him. The files were part of a defamation suit against Maxwell that Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre filed in 2015.
Prosecutors have said Epstein sexually abused dozens of underrage girls at his properties in New York and Florida, dating back to 2002. Many disturbing details about powerful men whom Epstein and Maxwell allegedly set underrage women up with were first revealed in the documents unsealed on Friday.

Does This Dress Make Me Look Guilty?
Anna Sorokin, the fake heiress accused of being a society scammer, wore a little black dress to State Supreme Court in Manhattan on Thursday evening as she was found guilty of second-degree grand larceny, theft of services, and one count of attempted grand larceny. Did she have an inkling of what was going to happen? Perhaps.
After all, the black dress appeared after Ms. Sorokin made back-to-back trial appearances in virginal white: a white long-sleeve V-neck mini with a sweet sheer overlay, a short white lace frock with a youthful drop waist.
Those dresses, more fit for communion than the courtroom, followed weeks of carefully crafted, mostly black, white and beige outfits — sweaters and trousers, yes, but mostly short baby-doll dresses with ruffles and ties — that had been chosen for Ms. Sorokin by a professional stylist and borrowed on her behalf via a secret benefactor, according to her lawyer Todd Spodek. Her legal team was concerned that an appearance in Rikers Island prison garb would make her look guilty and prejudice the jury against her.
There was a lot of hue and cry about the idea of using a formal stylist for a criminal proceeding. But the truth is that dress and public image are impossible to separate, especially when motivations are in question.
It’s one way we pass judgment, and not just when it comes to women: Earlier this year, after the political operative and self-described dirty trickster Roger Stone was indicted on seven counts of obstruction, witness tampering and making false statements, he made a video that was posted on the YouTube channel of the conservative website The Daily Caller talking about the importance of thinking long and hard about “what you wear to your arraignment.” (In his case, he said, he didn’t want to look too rich, so he went for a classic navy suit.)
Indeed, in the pageantry of court, clothes matter, as a fashion show of sorts that occurred this week in a variety of cases across the country demonstrated. Ms. Sorokin was just one model of how to approach the issue.
Her appearance in the halls of justice came just days after that of Elizabeth Holmes, the disgraced founder of the blood-testing company Theranos, who is charged with multiple counts of wire fraud. Ms. Holmes, best known for the Steve Jobsian black turtleneck and trousers she monotonously wore during the years she played the role of visionary founder, made her entrance in a San Jose, Calif., courtroom wearing the light gray pantsuit and light blue button-down shirt of a white-collar penitent.
She had changed! Literally. Gone from the dark side toward the light.
And a few days earlier, the rapper Cardi B appeared in a Queens courtroom to reject a plea deal in a misdemeanor assault case (she is accused of involvement in a brawl) in a state of high polish, wearing a white Christian Siriano sleeveless turtleneck dress over wide white trousers, carrying a taupe Hermès Birkin bag, with her hair smoothed back perfectly into a low ponytail, not a strand out of place.
It was about as far from her recent Coachella look — fringed hot pants and a floral leather corset — as you could get.
In each case the defendants had undergone something of a makeover for the courtroom, one that tapped into different archetypes of femininity that in turn function as vessels of association: part of a shared social mythology about innocence, youth, purity, hard work, good manners, respect for the court and the seriousness of the situation.
As far as the latter goes, see Ms. Sorokin’s nerdy thick-rimmed glasses, which have been a constant in every look. Also the horn-rimmed glasses worn by Lori Loughlin, another case in point (no pun intended), during her appearance in a Boston court earlier this month. Along with the glasses, the actress embroiled in the college admissions scandal also sported an equally studious tan trouser suit with a gray T-shirt. As far as accessories go, there’s an implicit connection between hard work and horn rims. Not to mention neutral shades and — well, remaining neutral. Just because it’s obvious doesn’t make it less effective.
The point is to counteract with visual imagery whatever picture the other side is painting of a person: How could someone who looks like this act like that?
This strategy can backfire, of course. According to the New York Post, Ms. Sorokin became upset with her court outfit one day and refused to appear, much to the irritation of the judge in her case, who said, “This is a trial. She is a defendant in a criminal case. I am sorry if her clothing is not up to her standards, but she’s got to be here,” and ordered her to show up.
Indeed, there’s something fascinating about the calculus, which is in part why, in each case, the makeovers were so closely tracked on social media. Ms. Sorokin had an entire Instagram account (@Annadelveycourtlooks) devoted to her style, with over 3,800 followers. Cardi B shared her own look on Instagram with the caption “COURT FLOW,” garnering more than three million likes.
That’s a new development, and one that is likely to spread as social media allows a public ruling on every photo op, and reality TV casts every drama as something to watch. But the obsessive attention to celebrity defendants, and the ways in which their clothes may affect the scales of justice, has long been a factor in forming opinions.
In 2002, for example, Winona Ryder attended her shoplifting trial in Los Angeles in what The New York Times called “conservative but very chic outfits,” including a Marc Jacobs black dress with a trompe l’oeil Peter Pan collar that evoked a child’s school uniform.
In 2004, Martha Stewart came to court in Manhattan for her trial on insider trading charges toting a Birkin bag, which did not go over well. While for Cardi B, the choice may have suggested the social niceties associated with the French brand, for Ms. Stewart it served to emphasize her (allegedly ill-gotten) wealth.
And in 2011, during her trial for felony grand theft in Los Angeles, Lindsay Lohan garnered more attention for what she wore on her way to court — very short, clingy dresses, often in white or beige — than for the reasons she was in court, which may not have helped with her legal troubles, but made a different kind of case for her own fame in the public eye. “She walks into court like a movie star,” the lawyer Gloria Allred told The Times during the trial. “Apparently she hopes to be one.”
Ms. Allred also said then that her own general approach was to advise clients to dress for court as though they were dressing for church.
It’s a precedent, of a sort.

NEWS R. KELLY INTERVIEW SHOWS LIVE Watch CBSN Live Ex-CIA chief Michael Morell resigns Harvard post over Chelsea Manning BY STEFAN BECKET UPDATED ON: SEPTEMBER 14, 2017 / 8:57 PM / CBS NEWS Michael Morell, former deputy director and acting director of the CIA, is stepping down as a senior fellow at Harvard University after the school extended a fellowship to Chelsea Manning, the soldier convicted of leaking classified information to Wikileaks. Morell, a CBS News senior national security contributor, wrote in a letter to Doug Elmendorf, dean of Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, that he can't remain at an organization "that honors a convicted felon and leaker of classified information, Ms. Chelsea Manning." The Harvard Institute of Politics, part of the Kennedy School, named Manning a visiting fellow for the academic year on Wednesday. Manning is the first transgender individual to be awarded the prestigious post, joining a class of fellows that includes Sean Spicer, Robby Mook, Mika Brzezinski and others. Manning was arrested in 2010 for leaking classified information to Wikileaks, and sentenced to 35 years in prison in 2013. She served seven years until her sentence was commuted by President Obama at the end of his term. Morell served 33 years in the CIA, including as deputy director for three years in the Obama administration. He served as acting director of the agency for several months in 2011, then again between November 2012 and March 2013. Morell retired in 2013 and was named a senior fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Kennedy School. In his resignation letter, Morell criticized the school for its decision to bring Manning on campus for the fall semester. Former CIA Deputy Director @MichaelJMorell resigns as Senior Fellow at Harvard Kennedy school over their hiring of Chelsea Manning pic.twitter.com/JORdp4ysHR — Mosheh Oinounou (@Mosheh) September 14, 2017 "The Kennedy School's decision will assist Ms. Manning in her long-standing effort to legitimize the criminal path that she took to prominence, an attempt that may encourage others to leak classified information as well," Morell wrote. "I have an obligation to my conscience -- and I believe to the country -- to stand up against any efforts to justify leaks of sensitive national security information." Morell said he had a duty to resign in protest "to make the fundamental point that leaking classified information is disgraceful and damaging to our nation." He added that "it is important to note that I fully support Ms. Manning's rights as a transgender American, including the right to serve our country in the U.S. military." Morell also recognized Manning's right "to publicly discuss the circumstances that surrounded her crimes as well as the IOP's right to invite whomever they believe will further the education of Harvard's student body." On Thursday night, CIA director Mike Pompeo, who has a law degree from Harvard, announced he would not speak at that night's forum, stating that "after much deliberation in the wake of Harvard's announcement of American traitor Chelsea Manning as a Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Politics, my conscience and duty to the men and women of the Central Intelligence Agency will not permit me to betray their trust by appearing to support Harvard's decision with my appearance at tonight's event." His statement went on to say that his decision "has nothing to do with Ms. Manning's identity as a transgender person. It has everything to do with her identity as a traitor to the United States of America and my loyalty to the officers of the CIA." Pompeo's letter concluded saying, "I applaud the decision of Michael Morell, a past and dedicated servant of the same agency that I now lead, to resign as a result of Harvard's decision. I am saddened, however, at Harvard's loss. You have traded a respected individual who served his country with dignity for one who served it with disgrace and who violated the warrior ethos she promised to uphold when she voluntarily chose to join the United States Army." Manning was released from a military prison in Kansas in May. She has since written columns for The New York Times, advocated for transgender rights, and become an avid Twitter user. She reacted to Morell's resignation Thursday afternoon: good 😉🌈💕 #WeGotThis https://t.co/UGBAPmnaHM — Chelsea E.
