y'all better start watching heartbreak high (2022) on netflix it has indigenous rep, autistic rep, non-binary rep, and representation for so many sexualities. it's not perfect but is such an amazing step in australian media and was genuinely a great teen drama to watch.

I think it’s very important that Abigail Pent is a little bit strange and off-putting. Like yes, she’s the oldest non-lyctor necromancer on cast and she’s a maternal figure and she generally makes smart decisions, but also! She’s a spirit magician! She knows everything there is to know about ghosts! She makes overly intense eye contact! She got so caught up in her research she forgot her own anniversary! She’s definitely the best-adjusted compared to the other necros and yeah she looks pretty normal but as soon as she opens her mouth you’re like “oh she’s not all there is she.” I fully believe she clocked Cytherea on some level at the dinner party but she was too distracted telling her about her research to really think about it. And most importantly I think Magnus Quinn is the normalest guy you will ever meet and he loves his weird weird wife with his whole entire heart and soul

itoshi rin who leaves for literally two minutes to go to the bathroom, and when he comes back with a drink in his hand he nearly shatters the glass with his grip because he sees shidou trying to chat you up.

itoshi rin who actually does end up accidentally breaking the glass in his hands. everyone turns to look at him funny with his sudden outburst. including you, with that concerned expression that makes him feel like he's about to fucking combust in shame for not being able to control his temper.

itoshi rin who's a complaining mess when you sit him down to clean the cuts on his hand and bandage him, laughing about how easy he is to rile up. he can't even find it in himself to be upset anymore, not when your fingers are delicately working against his like this.

itoshi rin who finally relaxes for the rest of the night when you cling to him, refusing to let go even as you're leaving the venue. you just make him feel so loved, so cherished, how could he not want you all to himself?

i wanna reread choices and edit it but i can never make myself do it cause im like "ugh wow so long i simply cannot"

but also, every time i do reread parts of it i have like *thoughts* like SO many thoughts about it and about what i was thinking at the time and how that has or hasn't changed and what i was trying to do and what i love and what i hate and blah blah blah

SO the question: if i did like a lil read-a-long with soph thing, would anyone be interested? like maybe in the form of small podcast episodes where i discuss the chapters as i edit them and you guys can like tell me the different stuff you want me to talk about etc etc and then i will have the motivation to actually do this and also somewhere to dump all of my *thoughts*

One really subtle, fun thing about the locked tomb is how they talk about “generalist” necromancy.

Judith says in Cohort Intelligence Files that Abigail’s necromancy is “generalist,” though we later find out her real skill lies with spirits. No matter how true it is, this is one of a few things in CIF that paint Abigail as a less-than-stellar necromancer (another one is the idea that her political power is what sets her apart from the others).

So “generalist” necromancy is seen as less advanced than a specialization, like Harrow’s in bone or Ianthe’s in flesh.

You don’t see a ton of that in fantasy media. In A:TLA, normal benders like Katara, Toph and Zuko are far less powerful than Aang, because he can bend all four elements. In Aurora (my favorite ever webcomic that you should all read), Erin has more prestige than any other living mage because he can do every type of magic. The Owl House shows wild witches like Eda, who do multiple kinds of magic, to be outlaws and outcasts. I could go on.

The reason fantasy authors do this is because they want to present magic as a skill/ability, whether it’s inherent or learned. It’s like sports or an instrument: the more you practice, the more things you can do, and the more things you can do, the better you’re considered.

And that’s the big difference between these examples and the Locked Tomb: instead of a skill to learn, TLT presents necromancy as an academic field.

In academia, specialization (like a college major, or being a specific kind of doctor) is common and expected. You’re encouraged to dive deep into one area of expertise, rather than being a jack-of-all-trades. That’s what necromancy is.

“Yes, Pent is a ridiculously powerful political force and talks to ghosts on a regular basis, but she’s a generalist. Not like Ianthe, who’s good at flesh magic!”

It’s really subtle, but it adds to the tonal blend of sci-fi and fantasy that helps make TLT so cool.
