Inktober 2022 - 10: the Flying Dutchman
“Wild and strong, you can’t be contained. Never bound nor ever chained.” Not Siderian-related art (this will be the only one)...but I watched PotC 2 again and I got reminded of just how much I love the first 3 PotC movies and particularly this living ship that looks like a big toothed sailfish. The design is SO increadibly detailed and artistic, just -me loves...
Even though this is not Siderian related...there is something in the design, and the whole apperance of this ship that feels - similar in some sense?
Black fineliners, black and gray Ecoline brushpens a blender and a some white gel pens on postcard sized paper.

Delighted to know that the wheel of fortune scene in dead man's chest was done entirely practically and had them on wires over an actual rolling wheel with actual swords and that the stuntmen only had a week to prepare, but it looked so good! Today's movies could never

❝ you want to find jack sparrow? ❞  she snorted with a roll of her eyes and a dismissive flap of her hand.     at table across from the smuggler , a chair was shattered over anothers’ head and then a pistol shot flew into the high ceiling — she smiled into her cup as she sipped her rum.    ah , god bless tortuga.

Will is so babygirl…. when I was but a wee thing I saw potc2. My mom rented it on Redbox for like two days and I took it to the basement and rewatched the whipping scene… I wanted to bandage him tenderly like I would a quivering chihuahua…
come off anon, we need to talk

Your pirate au is giving me art inspiration, so I've gotta ask: what're the characters like in terms of the human to not human scale? I like drawing screwed up and obviously magic/cursed creatures, but I'd like to know where the boundaries lie.
Most of the characters are fairly normal looking! Scar is notably human but the other members of the crew are a little bit Weird.
Grian and Scott have a lot of coral growth on their skin, a la the crew of the Flying Dutchman in POTC2 and they’re uncanny but they’re the most uncanny because they’ve been around the longest. Grian especially looks really strange which is helpful for intimidation considering he’s the more aggressive between him and Scar.
The other members of the crew, aside from Jimmy and Cleo, have progressive coral growth and they look a bit inhuman, again like the characters in Dead Man’s Chest
Jimmy is a fish man, but he has a little bit of magic to hide it. It’s not quite as obvious but he does look distinctly human and unaffected by the curse on the ship, but that’s because he’s actively trying not to look like a merman.
Cleo is obviously very much a zombie with her stitched up skin and body parts able to detach and reattach without any trouble.
Pearl is a slightly different case in terms of uncanniness where she LOOKS human but she doesn’t move like one (scurrying around the ship etc) and you can mess with her design how you see fit.
The Scarlet Buccaneers, Martyn included, are entirely human, but I’ve been playing with the idea of Ren having dog features because that’s just a staple of his design.
Lizzie is very much Ocean Queen vibes with a giant axolotl appearance. She CAN shrink down to normal size with magic but she still looks like a blue axolotl.
Pix is a weird case because he looks mostly normal but his arms and legs are entirely made up of copper. They’re not prosthetics, his arms are just made of copper. He can’t feel them either.
Etho is completely normal looking though.
If you do make art and post it PLEASE tag me I want to see it so badly! I hope this answers your question but I can be more specific if needed! I mostly just leave it up to your imagination because I personally love some magic and cursed people/creatures myself!

I think the reason why I disagree with a lot of reviews so often is because I pay zero attention to advertisement and even go so far as to block any and all ads and hype until day of purchase, I sometimes look up the review score if I've heard absolutely nothing about it without having to block anything (as was the case for Harvestella) but most often I just go in blind.
And I do it on purpose specifically because of POTC2 and IM3 where the trailers for both completely ruined the experience for me because they spoiled major plot points.
And so now when I read reviews after the fact and I see so many people complaining that it's not as advertised/hyped it's like... I'm not saying it's not a valid complaint where a product isn't as advertised but I do think having been burned by advertisement before that more of these folks should try going in blind rather than relying on advertisement to pitch the product, because some things that are really good have pisspoor advertisement and some things that are really bad are waaaaaaaay overhyped and you set yourself up for disappointment and missing gems in the mean time by doing things this way.

oohhh girl another one: TOP FIVE PERIOD DRAMAS (film or tv!!)
Oh that's such a tough fucking GET. but ok. These are my unbiased faves (I will unfortunately be excluding the terror from the running, because it should go without saying that it inherently takes the No. 1 slot- not just for Jared Harris reasons, but for historical accuracy and for Gothic Lit soulmateness), and for the sake of sanity I'm gonna put a cap at period past 100 years (because otherwise it would be way harder for me to choose with stuff like the shape of water in the running- I'm strictly going with the definition of taking place 100 years in the past or more and with the emphasis on fictionalization. ok. lets go)
5. Sense and Sensibility Oh I fucking love Alan Rickman. I always have. I also love Kate Winslett and this adaptation has some lovely nuance to it that I just adore. It's not as overt in its conflict as Pride and Prejudice is but it's beautiful in its nuance regardless. Just a lovely fucking time. 4. 1917 Look. I'm a Tolkien hoe. I was and still am obsessed with LOTR and the beauty and destruction that it embodies as a work conversant with Tolkien's own war trauma. I love that. I have also seen a fair number of war movies, but without a doubt, I don't think a single one of them has been conversant in the beauty and horror of war that inspired writers like Tolkien and C.S. Lewis and T.S. Elliot like this. None of them match this. Not to mention the masterclass in editing and long-form shot filmmaking this is. It's fucking beautiful top to bottom, and the fucking night window scene still gives me fucking chills. 3.BBC Jane Eyre Amazingly I only watched this one a couple weeks ago. Previously I did not know about it, but since I've been on a period drama bender for the sake of my own writing research, this one came up, and I really couldn't pass up the opportunity to see Toby Stevens as Mr. Rochester. I did not think that anything could blow the more recent adaptation of Jane Eyre out of the water, but color me surprised, Toby blew Mr. Fassbender out of the water, and color me surprised!!! I fucking ADORED Ruth Wilson in this as well!!! Honestly she and Toby had so much chemistry that it literally is still making me go insane thinking about it and I have to stop. Honestly I'm having a hard time placing this at no. 3 it really should be no. 2 but I have to have some principal about this.
2. 2005 P&P Look. I hate to be a basic hoe but this movie has always fucking bewitched me body and soul. Is it the best technical adaptation of Jane Austen? Probably not. Is it the most cinematically artful and do I also love Kiera Knightly and Matthew McFadyen? yeah. Also the hand touch is literally the most important maneuver ever committed to film and I will die by that. The way that has provided inspiration enough for an entire lifetime is unquestionably vital.
1. Black Sails What can I say? I love boat boys. Especially Pirates. I have been a pirate bitch since POTC2 came out and I saw it in Las Vegas with my dad, but what Black Sails did for me as a combination not just of literary characters but actual historical pirates, and the queerness among them, is literally fundamental to me as a person. Not to mention the writing poetic, poignant, and god tier, with an extremely socialist bent that I think gets missed in a lot of pirate media that really just... makes my fucking heart sing. Also Toby Stevens covered in blood Hot. And it's FUCKING FUNNY!!! Will never forget that painting debate scene ever in my life. She has it all and I will never forget her ever in my life.

thinkin’ ’bout how potc2 tries to convince you that the compass is pointing to Jack because of a love triangle when it’s actually just Elizabeth wanting his freedom

I was listening to my music on shuffle earlier and The Kraken from the potc2 soundtrack came on, and I remembered when I first managed to find the cd at a goodwill years ago, I was so excited and my dad suggested we listen to the cd in the car during our ride home.
I just remember when we arrived home The Kraken happened to be playing, and I wanted to stay till the end of the song bc it’s such a good song. Without any prompting, he turned up the volume, put the song on repeat, reclined our seats, and we both just sat there in silence listening to the song while it rained outside.

Head down now and no more posting, buuuut since I am rewatching potc2 to wallow in my own misery, I really am obsessed with how this series (the trilogy, don't care for the rest) so deliberately chooses the end of the Golden Age of Piracy. Like yes, Pirates and Myths so much older than them are fun, but the encroaching Imperialism makes me rattle at my cage. So many thoughts, no way to convey them.
