Debate the pros and cons of the two ships Gigolas (Alternatively Gimleaf, Gimli x Legolas) and Aragolas (Alternatively Leragorn, Aragorn x Legolas). Compare and contrast the two ships. You have half an hour (From the moment you start writing this ask, leave it in your inbox for as long as you wish). Go.

OKAY! Warning I know very little and there is probably a lot wrong or missing here! So right of the bat I'm seeing we've got different species and power dynamics at play

Gimli and Legolas are dwarf4elf, so that may be worth mentioning. If I'm remembering right, Gimli is also the "and my axe!" fucker, and I know Legolas is the shooty mcshootinson bitch, so right away we've got the shared love of weaponry and fighting, though they very likely have incredibly different styles for more reasons than one. Dwarven and elven values and attitudes towards death and violence are likely different, but this is Tolkien so it's probably existence and I'm on limited time here.

Hang on. These are the "never thought I'd die fighting side by side with an elf" people. Okay so here we've got a clear display of their growth (since Gimli was originally distrustful of Legolas' intentions) and how the two characters developed emotionally to put aside their difference and unite, both in battle and emotionally. It's not unreasonable to say that they can take that another route and into relationship territory (not that one is better than the other, just another path to take). Despite their differences, they are, in canon, capable of the necessary growth to make a healthy relationship.

Okay I'm also seeing that they became friends when walking through the woods, and elves are very woodlands creatures, so perhaps we can find a bit of similarity between their interests there. How do the dwarves view nature? Scrap that question I just read in the wiki that he went into the Undying Lands and Tolkien said it was strange that any dwarf would be willing to leave Middle-Earth for any love. I don't have any fucking clue what that means but it feels important.

I'm a third of the way through my time let's look at Aragorn. GOD wiki please tell me what species he is this is ridiculous. Okay he's not an elf but is descended from them? So he's got an unusually long life span? Okay his character description says he's somber and grim, and that kind of outlook might mesh well with an elven one like Legolas'? I'm not actually sure. Something about the seriousness feels like it could match an elven look and help them work together.

His name is also mentioned a lot on Legolas' wiki page, multiple instances of the two of them going through things together (though Gimli is a notable third addition). Found a random site that mentions something about Aragorn's true identity and Legolas defending him to Boromir, which was either when they met or very early on in their meeting. That sets a strong foundation for future relationships and a clear feeling of protection and trust in it, which is beneficial. Listen I have no context for this scene I have no idea who knows what or how they feel about it, but potentially this hinting towards Legolas knowing his identity could've built a bond between them from the get go that forces them to be more careful with each other, and that can lead to interesting dynamics.

There's also the whole matter of similar backgrounds, or at least more similar than Legolas and Gimli. Even if Aragorn's got a whole complicated situation with his race he was raised by Elrond in Rivendell (i think?) so he's got some elven thinking. If Elrond is indeed an elf but I've got six minutes so I'm not checking. And Legolas is Legolas, raised however he was. He's pretty clearly and elf, but the one thing that trips me up here is that he was "unimpressed" when he came to Rivendell to see the council of Elrond, as it displays that perhaps these two elven backgrounds may be as different as Gimli and Legolas' differences.

My other thought is that when I was key word searching through all their profiles, more often than not all of their names were coming up together. They seem to be a trio for a lot of the story, so why try to decide between a pairing? Why not all three of them if they're bonded so and endured so much together? Legolas has two hands, after all. But then I'd also have to get into what Gimli and Aragorn's relationship is like to see if it would be a triangle sort of a pairing or if they were both dating Legolas but not each other.

I think my final conclusion is that I can understand the shipping either way, but I don't think either one is superior to the other. Gimli and Legolas seem fun for the dynamics and depth they bring, and Aragorn and Legolas sound entertaining for the subtlety and intrigue. But also this was just thirty minutes of frantic skimming articles and trying desperately to remember my limited lotr knowledge.

Aragorn the middle earth shipper in chief

Listen I DO NOT TRUCK with oblivious!Aragorn content, I DO NOT, the man is a good candidate for king for a reason and it’s actually not his pretty face or his fancy sword.  He was raised by one of the best diplomats in Arda and he impressed Arwen Undomiel at a young age because he’s smart as balls and also charming but that’s not the conversation here.  And furthermore Aragorn is a Doer, the man is a Go Getter, he Solves Armies and Fixes Kingdoms professionally.

So he puts up with this incessant bickering for a while, right, and I think Lorien is probably well timed because Aragorn is pretty obviously reaching his threshold for Legolas and Gimli’s nonsense.  

“What the hell is wrong with these two,” Haldir’s expression seems to say while Legolas and Gimli bristle at each other.  Aragorn resists the urge to just lie down on the path.

“Blindfold us all, then, fuck it, just do it, whatever will buy me a few minutes of blessed silence,” Aragorn does not say, because he’s a fucking adult.

And by the time they leave Lorien, Legolas and Gimli are friends even though they still needle each other at every opportunity, and listen, Aragorn is eighty and change even though he’s, you know, about into his thirties by Numenorian standards, he has Seen Some Shit, he knows what’s up.  He’s onto their shit.  (Galadriel is also onto their shit and she and her future grandson-in-law had a gossip session about it while Celeborn tended his herb garden and laughed at Aragorn’s struggles.)

But so, from Aragorn’s perspective, the REAL trial of the ensuing months is these fuckers.  These fools.  These imbeciles.  These utter morons.

“I will go into Fangorn but only as long as you stick around,” Gimli says grumpily, like he’s in any way the type to refuse something because he’s scared.

“I will go see the caves under Helm’s Deep but only because you describe them like a poet,” Legolas says, staring at Gimli with adoration tattooed all over his pointy elf face.

“I will ride a horse but only if you’re also riding the horse,” Gimli agrees, pretending that this is a terrible experience for him.

“I won’t go West while you’re still alive because I can’t bear to leave you,” Legolas promises, like that’s not a huge dramatic thing for an elf to say.

“Beloved, I am a good man,” Aragorn thinks about writing, if he was in a position to send Arwen his customary letters.  You wouldn’t know that he’s thinking about his sweetheart from his face, because his expression froze solid in man who puts up with the insufferable, day after thankless fucking day about a month and a half ago.  “I don’t fucking deserve to put up with this.”

Frankly Aragorn is relieved that there are events of world-ending importance going on.  On the one hand, they’re at war so he doesn’t currently have time to knock some sense into his companions’ heads, which he regrets, because he’s pretty sure he could save them a lot of time and effort.  They Tell Him Things, so he’s pretty sure he knows what their hangups are, he could probably solve this for them.

On the other hand–like, shit, at least Sauron’s a change from the stifling sexual tension and mutually woeful staring.  Pass Aragorn that fucking Palantir, he needs a break.

So yeah, what I’m saying here is that while Aragorn is the captain of this particular ship, he’s really fucking annoyed about it.  Aragorn would trade a lot for obliviousness.  Let him rest.

The aftermath of Helm’s Deep could be a category all its own (it is, after all, Gimli’s canon injury). The sensory descriptions are absolutely incredible, especially given that two senses are entirely cut off, and the writing really puts you right there in the moment – I found myself clinging to Legolas along with Gimli. And Legolas himself is just so gentle and wonderful. This is everything I want in h/c; please read.

I personally don’t think enough people take advantage of the potential for warmth-sharing in a relationship where one partner canonically does not feel the cold – but in this case, they’re not even in a relationship yet! Legolas offers his body heat to a grumpy Gimli, who slowly thaws in more ways than one. A sweet moment of truce and some really lovely cuddling. (Also read everything by this author; they have a lot of other stories that I considered for this prompt!)

The loyalty of a Dwarf by The_Dwelf

That night, apparently, it was Gimli's turn to hear the call of the One Ring, to endure the visions it sent, visions of power and death- lies, all lies, built upon the thing his heart desired the most. Gimli was absolutely certain that Legolas had never spoken such words. He would surely remember, thank you very much. And yet his mind was showing him things that he never had seen nor dared to imagine. Whatever was going on?

GOSH this story is just – peak emotional hurt/comfort. Poor Gimli fights so hard against the machinations of the Ring – and he passes the test, but not without paying an emotional price. Legolas comes to comfort him in the aftermath, and he is so gentle and understanding and loving. The angst hurts so much, but it just makes the payoff that much more satisfying. I’ve been known to reread this story when I want to have FEELINGS.

Gimli is a skilled leather worker in Dale. When Legolas first enters his shop to try and discreetly commission him something potentially very embarrassing, he finds with surprise that the Dwarf is professional, skilled, and respectful.

“UNCLE BILL, DAN, COME QUICK. UNCLE BILL! DAN! WHERE ARE YOU!?”

You don’t see Hunter and your blood runs cold. Minna came from the direction of the cove, anything could have happened… you shove back your chair, nearly knocking over your empty coffee mug in your haste to get out to the yard. You slam through the front door and fall to your knees in front of the child, checking her over for injury.

“Are you hurt? What happened? Where’s your brother?” You can’t help the rapidfire string of questions falling from your lips. She seems fine on a cursory once-over, maybe a little out of breath and smeared with dirt… but she’s a child who’s been playing in the woods. You just wish you could tell general grime from potential indication of something gone horribly wrong.

She shrugs off your hands, but continues near vibrating in place. It dawns on you that what you took for fear is barely contained excitement. “We found something down there, Dan. Hunter sent me back up to get you, I’m the faster runner after all!” Minna puffs out her chest proudly and relief douses over you, as warm as the fear had been cold.

How could he act like nothing had happened? Like he hadn’t just tossed their son out into the cold dark night. Like he hadn’t just ripped apart their family.

She knew better than to open her mouth and challenge him, but something in her was close to snapping.

Fiddleford frowns at Ford’s stiff back. “Lemme get this straight. For some gosh-darn reason your twin showed the fuck up after a fucking decade and you what… shot them? With a bow of some kind?”

“Crossbow,” says Ford, almost distantly. “I almost didn’t recognize them, Fidds. I… I don’t know what I’m gonna do if they die.” They’ve reached the front door and Ford pushes it open to find his twin right where he left them. “Oh, thank Tesla. They’re still breathing.”

Ford kneels down beside the figure on the floor and even from the open doorway Fiddleford can see his hands shaking as he reaches out to push matted hair out of his twin’s eyes. Despite barely matching any description Fidds has ever been given of Lee, he can see the resemblance in the stubborn set of their jaw and the subtle curl of their hair. This is undoubtedly Stanford’s twin.

“Alright,” Fiddleford hangs his coat on the hook by the door and rolls up his sleeves. “Lets get them someplace more comfortable than the floor.”

If the wizard walked like a dwarrow of 300, he looked like a wraith from beyond the grave. His face was drawn, as if deep in unpleasant thought, and his eyes were sunken and bruised. When he saw Gimli, his expression grew even more grave, if such a thing were possible, before he let his lips twitch into a fond smile.

It did not reach his eyes.

“Ah, young Gimli. I was hoping I would run into someone familiar.” He leaned heavily on his staff, reins held loosely in one hand. “Would you mind telling a tired old man where I could find Princess Dis?”

Gimli spared a second to peer around to the road behind Gandalf, hoping perhaps to see his da’s familiar figure in the distance, favorite walking axe swinging jauntily along, or perhaps Fili and Kili’s more energetic pace…

But the road was empty, save for the wizard’s dutiful and laden-down horse, and when Gimli looked back at Gandalf he dared not meet the wizard’s eyes for fear of what he might see.

“I miss them,” Bombur said at last, staring at the dying embers of the fire. His words were quiet in the deepening night. “I miss the laughter and bustle of our house full of children. I miss turning to Hepti in the kitchen, the dance around the flour barrels. I miss rubbing salve into Abarâl's sore fingers after that last archery tournament.” A cool breeze washed over the camp and Glóin slipped closer, laying down and slipping one arm across Bombur’s barrel chest. “I miss… I miss their comfort and their warmth as they bracket us in the winter.”

“Aye, I miss them, too. Our family. Our many bright children… The forge-warmth of our wives in our marriage-bed.” Glóin tucked his chin into Bombur’s shoulder, curling around him in their shared bedroll, only to whisper into his husband’s ear. “But do you know what else I miss, kurduê?”

Bombur shivered as Glóin’s hand slid down to curl around his hip, dipping forward just enough to tease. Well. This was one way to banish homesickness. “What else do ya miss?” His tongue felt thick in his mouth, the words syrupy.

5. Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you?

I’m gonna assume you wanted this answered immediately, so! Honestly I can’t say that a pairing has ever been ruined for me by the fandom, though I have been in a situation where the fandom for a ship has frustrated me - I’m not a Gigolas shipper, for example, because I’m an Aragorn/Legolas shipper and that’s been true since the mid-2000s, but I don’t dislike Gigolas as an abstract concept and bore no ill will toward Gigolas shippers until I encountered concepts like “Aragorn/Legolas shippers only ship it because both guys are conventionally attractive! Gigolas is the more progressive ship because Gimli isn’t hot!” and first off I’m a whole entire lesbian so my investment in this ship isn’t based on who I think is more attractive, really? also I bought the A/L relationship because of Legolas moving across the subcontinent and fighting “for the love of the Lord of the White Tree”, not actually due to the films (though the films have some really interesting potential subtext). It would be nice if there had been some nuance in that particular area of discussion.

that being said, Gigolas is a venerable ship and I think that 99% of the art and fic and shippers I’ve encountered have been great, and I’m glad it’s become as prominent as it has just for the sake of fandom diversity and keeping the flame alive, you know? so it’s less “ruined” and more “can’t we all coexist?”

So I am doing a (hopefully) two or three chapter of 6k each of Kiliel because it’s a ship that I‘ve been exploring with Our Synphony  (check it out please and thank you.)

And , even though I’ve never read a Kiliel fic before, I think I am ready to enter it. I think it’s a very sweet ship with a lot of potential (lol I am talking like this ship is new. I am an idiot.) 

Since I am still brain storming with Our Synphony because it has three main ship with a semi complicated plot, I needed a distraction. This new Kiliel touches the topic of trust and abandonment issues, art and... well, bondage. Yes... you heard me. 

It’s not going to be dark nor very and extremely sexual (just the ol’ erotic theme but it doesn‘t go beyond that) Just about two young adults that discover this world and how they manage to become part of it. 

Hopefully I don’t disrespect anyone because I am doing my research. I don’t like being mediocre about topics that I don’t know very well--that’s why I added the art theme because that’s my baby and I know by heart.

I realized that maybe the first chapter is kind of slow but I promise it will get interesting and good and even though it’s going to be two (maybe three if I feel like it needs more information) it has very interesting supporting characters like Rosie and Eowyn and such--plus, I changed their appearance a bit. 

As a plus size and POC myself, I am kind of tired writing about skinny white girls even though that’s the canon (no offense) so this is going to be interesting and hope I don’t get hate comments because of it.

Plus my baby Barduil is going to be there. They maybe supporting characters but I made them to be the key to everything. 

I hope it doesn’t become too complicated. 

I am really excited for this.

P.S if I feel like it has more potential, I’ll probably make it into a series with other characters like Barduil and Bagginshield and Gigolas and etc.

if I may be brutally honest, I'll only be interested in the potential new LotR series if it has a diverse cast (and I mean racially and gender-wise + I wouldn't mind canon Gigolas)

but like if it's another white sausagefest then what's the point? we already have one and they'll never top that cast

5th stage: Finding the artists

We decided to come up with artists from the largest networks we had, so we went to see art university’s exhibition (special thanks to our friend Paul (artist in the exhibition) that enabled us to get in), in order to find the wright artists, the one that would match the vibes and the ones that we thought had the potential to do something according to the brief. When we had chosen the wright ones, we simply tried to contact them, explaining them the event, and why would they suit perfectly to what we are organising. Luckily, they all responded very positively and were all very enthusiastic about the project. They then started creating... On the music side, a member of our crew, personally knew two DJ’s that were matching perfectly to the concept, so we just had to get them on board, which they did fairly naturally. But we still needed to find 2 more DJ’s for the hip-hop bits. While hanging out at the Buster Mantis, on a night out, we noticed a pair of DJ’s mixing very cool hip-hop, we then decided to try getting them on board. Luckily they performed regularly to the Buster Mantis, knew the managers and staff, which was very helpful in attracting them to play for us.  To be honest, all the artists we found, have been through networking, either networking through our friends, or friends of friends or literally networking during the everyday life. That is also the way we found a photographer/film-maker to take photographs and direct an after-movie, as well as the visual maker that created all the visuals for the promotion.
