hi! i've been kinda gardening, in the ground and all for a couple years now but i'm still pretty stupid and learning, i know you're supposed to use potting or seed mix bc the perlite + peat combo makes the container bearable for the little seedlings roots and makes the watering consistent.... but the question is how can we grow things before they're meant to be put in the ground, as a headstart? without spending money that fuels a practice that is extremely insane and greedy, since perlite + vermiculite as well as peat moss are not exactly renewable resources. i have a lot of old crumpled leaves here but they're not exactly composted leaf mold so i'm wondering if i just mix that with native soil if i can make something idk airy and nice i guess for the seeds?
If you can get some soil from a forest, from under a rotten or dead tree, that would do well in a container! (once you clean it from all of the leaves.) You can see how I prepare the soil from forest-soil and sand here.
Other than that, I've seen many methods. Plant lady will sometimes take soil that has been worked on by moles, mix it with some moss and plant in it, and it works sometimes. I'm convinced that if you don't have horrible clay as your soil, you could mix it with fine sand and it would work in a container. You don't need perlite or whatever they're selling, you'll always be able to find some fine and airy soil in the nature, or if you make compost yourself, you could mix your compost with sand and it would also make a good potting soil.
If your compost is still having whole pieces of leaf, don't use them for little starts. Organic matter that is still in the middle of composting takes up nitrogen, and you don't want your plants to have nitrogen taken away. Usually when people construct garden beds, they'll only use organic matter very deep in the no-dig garden, or on the surface, as mulch.
Try to see if there's some fine sand in the river, or in the nearest forest or lake that you can bring home and use to make your soil airy! You can try several things and one of them will eventually work out. Just don't use pure clay or heavy soil, as your tiny plants won't be able to push out of it.
Also if you're worried about watering, just use bottom-watering method and water consistently, we don't need a special type of soil to keep the soil damp, just some attention and dedication.
Good luck.

So im trying to grow some herbs and i went to the store to get potting soil, but all the ones available had fish meal and some other fish thing in it. Like its not vegan, but is it bad that i bought some? Next time im going to get vegan potting soil ofc if i can find it
It does exist but not something you’ll find in most garden stores. Obviously you’ve just had to make do with what you could find which is understandable, the vegan ones you’ll likely have to order. I did find one local to me that wasn’t marketed at vegans but didn’t appear to have any animal inputs in them, but even then you don’t always know for sure unless it’s explicitly labelled.

One tomato plant moved to its longer term home, at least!
There was some miscommunication, and for whatever reason? Mr. C was working off the impression that we needed one bucket and one bag of potting soil to fill it up with? Even though he had seen all four of the plants, and also how big they will usually grow. 🤔 But, he is not a gardening person. The main extent of the experience there was helping his mom with it, growing up.
We do have three more buckets plus dirt ordered from Hornbach. 👍 Hopefully shouldn't take that long for the rest to get here.
I was getting sick in retrospect, and just really didn't feel like wrestling that 40L sack of anything but lightweight soil over the weekend. Also trying to figure out how to avoid making a huge mess with that and watering the thing in--especially in the balcony room.
So, it's all been sitting out there, but I decided to go ahead and get the one bigger variety tomato into its new house this evening before it started getting dark. Awkward wrangle mostly from sitting in the floor, but it's done without too much stray dirt in the floor to vacuum up later!
Thankfully, one of the reasons that sack of (thoroughly organic!) soil was so heavy was that it had a lot of moisture already. So that made the watering less tricky, hopefully without having it flood out all over the floor. (Which is thankfully concrete under that already kind of worn indoor-outdoor carpeting.)
I just gave it most of a 2L bottle of water starting out, and will go back to cautiously add more later until a little does start coming out the bottom. It ought to be fine to settle in for the time being.
No need for staking yet, but we do have some for later.
Tumblr media
Now, just two or three more potting soil workouts to go! 😁 Though I am still considering letting those two more compact variety cherry tomato plants share a planter, to leave one free for something else.
The very bottom leaves on the bigger plants were starting to suffer from getting so rootbound, so I'm extra glad to move that one out so at least the other one gets the pudding cup to itself until the other supplies come. Not much point in transplanting it into a bigger pot for probably less than a week, in the meantime.
Didn't want to pull any of the tiny marigold plants out of that egg carton over on the right until they were all ready to go around the tomatoes, since that paper carton would dry out worse that way. So, good thing they were seeded enough later to still be so small and good to stay where they are for a while. 😅 I also held off on sowing any basil in the tomato bucket, until the couple of marigold plants go in and it's easier to see where to plant those seeds.
But, glad to finally get at least one of those plants taken care of today! Didn't need to do more at a time anyway, not to seriously overdo the workout. At least next time, I should have a better plan if attack going in

Growing Tip: Growing Strawberries
Tumblr media
l love strawberries. They’re one of my favourite fruit; but I always hesitate buying them, especially when I’m alone, because they always seem to go bad quickly, and it seems a bit of a waste (although nothing is really waste in our house, and they naturally end up onto the compost him if we can’t eat them!)
Thus, when I saw a tiny strawberry plant in a tiny pot whilst doing my grocery shopping mid-May, I bought it on impulse! And planted it that very day in a much larger pot, in a mixture of half potting soil, a quarter garden soil and a quarter compost.
Then, tending to my ‘Elvira’ Strawberry Plant was rather easy. It likes sunshine, but not too much, so I placed it in a spot where it gets plenty of morning sunshine, and then is in the shade in the afternoon. That, and regular watering (whenever the soil isn’t moist to the touch) made it very happy.
Tumblr media
And it grew and bloomed generously, in a matter of a fortnight! The pollinators then did their job beautifully.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And by mid-June, I had tiny strawberries growing where the flowers had been.
Tumblr media
Then, all it needs is water and sunshine and it will produce gorgeous, delicious fruits. Jules and I have eaten four of these between ourselves so far, and the taste of them truly is incomparable.
Tumblr media
Obviously, one wants more of these strawberries, and luckily, it is a generous plant. It propagates by throwing out stolons (or runners), on which a bunch of leaves will grow.
Tumblr media
It is ready to root too, and grow a new plant. All one has to do is to arrange for this new growth to fall onto a pot filled like the first one, with potting soil, garden soil and compost, and water it until it takes root. Then, you can cut it from the mother plant, and it will bloom, be pollinated and produce more delightfully flavourful strawberries!
Tumblr media
This one is just taking.
Tumblr media
And my strawberry plant is already throwing out a new stolon! I reckon this was a good impulse! Wonderfully tasty, at least!

23:02 - they’ve been getting pretty big now!  The leaves also still feel quite tender and a bit waxy.  The small leaf fuchsia seedlings are lagging behind still, but nothing too alarming.
Meanwhile, the basil has been really popping off!  They grow so fast

What is Potting Mix?
Before delving into the advantages, let’s define potting mix precisely. It is a specific mixture of soil, organic matter, and other elements intended to create the best possible conditions for plant growth. For many gardeners, this customized mixture is the best option because it sets it apart from ordinary garden soil.
Benefits of Using Potting Mix:-
enhanced drainage to avoid soggy soil and root rot.✅
Improved aeration is essential for the growth of roots and the absorption of nutrients.✅
defense against illnesses borne through the soil, preserving the health of your plants.✅
ideal nutrient retention, encouraging rapid development.✅
