i finished reading Power of Shazam! and i have some thoughts that i wanted to share. buckle up
firstly, i am so tired of "billy joins the batfam" stories, especially because 99% of the time the bats are reduced to fanon tropes with personalities that they don't actually have in canon. not to mention, mary is never included in these stories. it would be one thing if this was New 52 billy, who is only mary's foster brother, but the majority of what ive seen takes inspiration from the idea of billy being a homeless kid in fawcett
so why are we throwing billy in with people who live halfway across the country, when the bromfields are right there?
Tumblr media
if you're going to write a fanfic where billy (and, hopefully, mary) joins another established superhero family, why not have him be taken in by superman? though they argue a lot in canon, their morals, abilities, and worldview are much more similar. they admire each other!
Tumblr media
additionally, a lot of the time other members of the marvel family are completely ignored. freddy freeman only ever appears to be a romantic interest for billy or mary, tawky tawny shows up in some fics for a moment or so, but dudley and ibis the invincible are nowhere to be found. even black adam, doctor sivana, and mr. mind are underutilized!
Power of Shazam! is such a heartfelt story, when you look at the bigger picture. it's about a boy who's had to look out for himself for so long learning to trust family again. it's about him sharing the burdens of the responsibilities he has, and also sharing the guilt. billy feels so much guilt all the time, and it's absolutely gut-wrenching at points. there's an issue where fairfield, the twins' home town, is nuked to get back at them. and billy just has a breakdown
Tumblr media
i have my criticisms on how New 52 handles billy as a character, but him having anger at the world is not out of character. billy is a very, very angry boy— why wouldn't he be? his entire life was taken away from him, his trust was betrayed again and again, the people around him think him to be incompetent
but he still finds joy in life. he's silly, he's funny, he always sees the bright side to things. and this run does a phenomenal job of demonstrating just how complex he really is
there's also the problem of mary and freddy acting subservient to billy. throughout this series, mary is explicitly referred to as captain marvel several times. she's captain marvel as much as billy is. and much of freddy's arc within this series revolves around him outgrowing the "junior" tagline and becoming captain marvel 3. they're not just a team, they're a family
Tumblr media
they protect and look out for each other. this is what i want to see more of! i have fun with fics or headcanons where billy gets looked after by another hero, but if that's the only way you interact with his media, it's a disservice to his character and the characters of his family
read Power of Shazam! look into these characters. and please stop reducing these complex and dynamic characters to tropes

Cassandra Cain ran away at age 8, and she lived on her own for 8-9 years before the events of No Man’s Land.
Tumblr media
No Man’s Land takes place not long before A World Without Grown Ups, in which Billy Batson is somewhere around age 15. And Billy becomes Captain Marvel somewhere between age 10 and 14. Regardless, Cass would have run away before Billy was at that age.
Tumblr media
Accessing the Wizard’s power requires pureness of heart. At least, it does when one is trying to access it through the Wizard or his staff, although the Champion can share their power with anyone.
Tumblr media
And Cass is shown to be able to access the Wizard’s power due to her pure heart, even after five years of a technoviral zombie apocalypse.
Tumblr media
So, given all of this information, if the mission during which Cass took a man’s life and ran away from her father took place in Fawcett City, then it is very possible that the Wizard might have chosen Cass as his Champion instead.

Wanna know something sad I found?
Power of Shazam, issues 25-27, there’s an alternate reality where C.C. and Marilyn Batson were the Captain and Mary Marvel of their world.
Billy and Mary stayed together and weren’t separated in that universe, they lived happy childhoods with their parents secretly moonlighting as superheroes while being archeologists rather than dying in the collapse that should’ve killed them.
They were happy and content but the world was fundamentally wrong, it couldn’t exist and never should have because that wasn’t the fate they were meant to live.
Both on them had to come to terms that the world where they died and their children were left orphaned, Billy on the streets and fighting to survive after Ebenezer stole Billy’s inheritance and Mary got straight up amnesia of her life before the Bromfield’s adopted her, was the one that had to exist. The one that needs to exist or else time breaks off and twists in ways it shouldn’t.
Marilyn spend the last moments she can with her kids telling them she loves them, and they know what’s happening too, and C.C. tears through time trying to keep the reality he lives to see his children grow alive before he’s forced to see that’s he’s chasing a fantasy that’s destroying time and puts things back they way they ‘should be’.
And Billy and Mary remember this afterwards, they have memories of having their parents alive and having a childhood together but chalk it up to a dream, simple Deja vu.
A world where that family was happy, where the world still had Captain Marvel fighting the same threats and Billy never suffered and Mary never forgot, was never meant to happen. And they all had to accept that and turn the clocks back to how they should’ve been, only to be left with it all as a fantasy to them.

INKtober Day 11- DR SIVANA
Though a mere mortal man of rodent-like complexion, Dr Thaddeus B. Sivanna is no joke! Possessing super genius intellect, he has concocted many an outlandish scheme, invention, allied himself with the telepathic alien worm: Mister Mind and his Monster Society of Evil, and even the legendary Teth Adam (BLACK ADAM); all in the effort to conquer the world! All that stands in his way is Earth’s mightiest mortal, the “big red cheese:” Captain Marvel the champion of SHAZAM the Marvel/ Shazam family!

The wizard Shazam, Mary Marvel, and the original Captain Marvel by Jerry Ordway, longtime writer/artist of the Power of Shazam series.
Ordway modeled Cap after actor Fred MacMurray, whose likeness Cap co-creator C.C. Beck used for the Bug Red Cheese.
When Mary was created in 1942 she was modeled after actress Judy Garland.  Ordway seems to have based his Mary on model Kathy Ireland.   I don’t know who was the first artist to do this; Alex Ross has for several years used Ireland’s likeness for his drawings and paintings of Mary.

Folks, remember Daxiong’s DC variants he with with AI? DC quietly confirmed he did use AI, they cancelled the variants, and replaced them with cover art made by actual artists
I found a few small sources confirming this, along with the new covers created by actual artists
Wonder Woman #10: Daxiong —> Dan Panosian
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shazam #12: Daxiong —> Cully Hamner
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Power Girl #10: Daxiong —> Dave Johnson
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m glad DC cancelled the original covers. It’s not worth buying art of any kind if no one spent the time to actually make them. These new variants being made by actual artists are a million times better for that reason alone, that real human artists put their time into making them, and not AI stealing from what has already been created.

dpxdc prompt:
danny is a fully grown adult now, but his ghost form hasn't changed at all. it still looks 14 years old. stuck in the hazmat suit he died in.
he joins the justice league as phantom.
he never tells them that his powers are ghost powers, or that he's half ghost.
when they finally find out his civilian identity, they assume he's basically just reverse shazam.
instead of a child turning into a super powered adult, it's an adult turning into a super powered child.
both danny and billy have to activate it by saying a very specific word/phrase. ("shazam", or "going ghost") (this is very much not true. danny can just transform without saying it, but they've never seen him do it)

Do you think Billy Batson is allowed to enter Olympus???
Would Zeus vouch for him and let him in?
Is there a door in the Rock of Eternity that opens up to Olympus?
Just imagine. This small boy in a red sweater, walking into Olympus, surrounded by ethereal and immortal gods and goddesses, just to like, pick some nice flowers for his adopted mom on Mother's Day. Or, maybe he's having lunch with some gods or deities, like that one comic panel where Billy is eating ice cream on the moon with powerful mages/people.
Would Billy Batson share a pizza with Hades? Would he have lemonade with Hera? Would Billy invite Mary to have breakfast with Artemis and Apollo?
There are so many questions, and not enough time in the day to write a cute little domestic fic about Billy Batson and his adventures in Olympus.

Prompt 237
“Wait, so, Captain Marvel is like, three?”
Said hero pauses as he nearly passes by a cracked door, creeping slightly closer despite it being more than a little rude to eavesdrop. All of the gods were insistent, which he could say no to, but Billy was giving him the equivalent of puppy eyes, which they all knew he was weak to.
He? They? Marvel was technically an amalgamation of the past champions, currently split between six beings, though nowhere near equally. Billy was and would be the chosen champion- pure of heart to be able to resist the Gods’ bullshit- but he had chosen a team himself, which honestly Marvel approved.
“What the fuck do you mean by that, Hal?”
He didn’t move from the corner, head tilting slightly at Green Lantern’s and Green Arrow’s words. Billy, not physically there, not really, wiggled down from his shoulder, passing through the wall like a ghost invisible to all but him.
Well, him and the Gods, but Mercury’s words were muffled, nearly silenced by Solomon at the moment, so he was probably attempting to wax poetic about Flash again in a way that little ears shouldn’t hear.
“I mean, Marvel mentioned he was created three years ago, right?”
Ah. Marvel had meant that the newest Champion had been chosen, but well, he supposed that the team didn’t have all the information, as Solomon pointed out. And he was pretty sure that Billy was mostly in control at that point- it could get confusing with the hive-mind but not-hive-mind. It was hard to explain to those not apart of it.
But they had to go now, Fawcett called, and it wasn’t like Billy could leave it for long. Chances were nothing would come from this anyway.
Why does this feel like the intervention videos Billy showed them all.
