Restless Rewatch: The Untamed, Episode 40 part two
(Masterpost) (Pinboard)  (whole thing on AO3)
Tumblr media
Warning! Spoilers for All 50 Episodes!
What a Relief
After spending a few weeks in Gusu doing...stuff, our trio comes to Jinlintai for the discussion conference. Unusually for a CQL stair-climbing scene, nobody is planning to murder anyone once they get to the top.
Tumblr media
Our crew walks up the stairs past 3 massive sculpted reliefs featuring Jin Guangyao.
Tumblr media
First and most important, I have to point out that the sculpture version of Lan Xichen [edit: Nie Mingjue actually, whoops] is wearing a sash that looks like this:
Tumblr media
*cough*
Meanwhile, for the picture with the sword and flames, qhanzi.com tells me that the written characters are 伏殺, fú shā; Google translate tells me this means "ambush." Specifically Fu=conceal, Sha=kill. Ballsy to have a monumental artwork on your front steps announcing that you're a backstabbing turncoat, Jin Guangyao.
Tumblr media
Speaking of balls, Jiang Cheng jumps at the opportunity to bust some when the Lan bros arrive with Wei Wuxian in tow. He pretends not to know who Wei Wuxian is, but obviously does know something, given how bitchily he asks to be introduced. Lan Wangji continues his 13-year-long silent treatment of JC while Lan Xichen tries to figure out which bland smile he's meant to be deploying in this situation.
(more after the cut!)
They're all rescued by the appearance of Jin Guangyao 3.0, who has discarded his Nie braids and his Wen hotness in favor of Jin ostentatiousness.
Tumblr media
He's no longer wearing the v-neck robe and topknot crown that we associate with the cultivation sects. Instead he's wearing a hat and a round-necked robe with a big embroidered design on the chest, that resembles the clothing style of a court official.
Some people see JGY's bureaucratic wardrobe as signaling that he's an unassuming administrator, someone who is not threatening to the power structure or is not ambitious. I see it more as conveying that his ambition reaches beyond the cultivation sects into the realm of dynastic/imperial politics.
Anyway, Jiang Cheng turns his ire towards his nephew, and Lan Xichen relaxes again. Possibly he is a little too relaxed, judging by how he's ogling Jiang Cheng.
Tumblr media
I'm high as a kite, I just might stop to check you out
Party Monster
Fanfics are often accused of giving us an out-of-character (OOC) Wei Wuxian, but no fanfic Wei Wuxian is as OOC as the Wei Wuxian who attends this banquet. Normally Wei Wuxian is a mildly annoying flirt, but as soon as soon as he arrives in Koi tower he is (presumably) possessed by the spirit of Jin Guangshan, and becomes a gross sex pest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He goes out of his way to hit on the wife of the clan leader and make googly eyes at all of the maids, whose social status doesn't allow them to be rude to him. And he does it in front of his date! What the hell, possessed Wei Wuxian.
Tumblr media
While oblivious to Lan Wangji's jealousy, Wei Wuxian does check in with him to make sure it's ok to put on his "crazy Mo Xuanyu" act. LWJ replies with a certain amount of salt, but once Wei Wuxian makes it clear he's thinking about Lan Wangji's public face, LWJ chills out and answers him normally.
Side note: in no universe would this cute lil maid be making eyes at heavily-masked Mo Xuanyu when unmasked, radiant, filthy-rich Lan Wangji is right there to be smiled at.
Tumblr media
Jin Guangyao greets everyone and some dancers start doing their thing; mercifully, possessed Wei Wuxian refrains from hitting on the dancers. As soon as Jin Guangyao starts to circulate through the room, Nie Huaisang has an epic nervous breakdown all over him, which is even better entertainment than the dancers.
Tumblr media
This gives Wei Wuxian the cover he needs to slip out of the hall unnoticed. Well, as long as nobody notices Lan Wangji's obvious pining.
Fight Club
The prophecy foretells that into each generation of Jins will be born one douchebag cousin. Jin Chan is the douchebag cousin of his generation.
Tumblr media
Jin Chan accuses "Mo Xuanyu" of being a sex pest, and Wei Wuxian suddenly understands why the plot made him act so OOC at the party. Mo Xuanyu wasn't really a sex pest; he was a regular pest, trying to get information out of Qin Su, not trying to seduce her. But he doesn't know that yet. In other adaptations Mo Xuanyu is gay, but CQL exists in a strange censorship-created realm in which gayness is pervasive but never mentioned, and therefore there is no homophobia. So nobody would care if Mo Xuanyu was gay.
When Wei Wuxian realizes what Mo Xuanyu did, he thinks "Mo Xuanyu, do you want to die?"
Tumblr media
Nice choice of idiom, Wei Wuxian. I believe we have firmly established that yes, Mo Xuanyu absolutely did want to die.
The show is kind of vague, verbally, about whether Wei Wuxian 2.0 has a golden core. But there are a lot of moments that strongly suggest he does, at this point, have a functioning core.
Tumblr media
This rock attack is, I hope, one of those moments, or else Jin Chan is a total pussy, getting knocked back by landscape gravel.
Next, Wei Wuxian shows Jin Ling the super-secret move known as "arm twisting," which Jin Ling, as an only child, has never encountered before.
Tumblr media
Anyone with siblings is very familiar with this move.
Because this is The Untamed, this move should be executed with extra spinning whenever possible.
Tumblr media
Jin Ling learns the move right away, and uses it to win the scuffle.
Avuncular
After the fight, Wei Wuxian sits with Jin Ling for a chat, and gives him the classic uncle advice "have as many fights as possible while you're young, because when you're older you'll have to be mature and get along with people."
Tumblr media
I love Wei Wuxian so much.
For contrast, Jin Ling says that Jin Guangyao tells him not to get in fights. This makes Wei Wuxian seem like the cooler elder, but it also has a more sinister element, of Jin Guangyao holding Jin Ling back. Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian grew up constantly fighting with each other--sparring as well as informal fights, presumably. And their cultivation was super strong, partly as a result of that.
Wei Wuxian takes the opportunity to tell Jin Ling that he's not in love with Qin Su any more, because he's transferred his affections to someone else. Obviously Hanguang-Jun is the someone else, given that they've been inseparable for weeks. To keep Jin Ling from yelling while he explains, he clamps his hand over Jin Ling's mouth.
The thing is, in order to effectively clamp your hand over someone's mouth, there has to be something behind them--a wall, the mattress, your own torso, or something else solid. Otherwise they can just jerk their head backwards to get away from your hand. Or they can stand up and walk away, even.
Tumblr media
Jin Ling, hilariously, does not realize this, and spends a ridiculously long time sitting still and making angry faces while Wei Wuxian rests his hand on his face.
Spy Game
Later that night, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji get ready for some shenanigans.
Tumblr media
Not the sexy kind, alas, just some paperman snooping.
Tumblr media
Wei Wuxian, because he's facing serious danger, is feeling extra playful and cute, and he takes time to goof around with Lan Wangji before getting down to business.
Tumblr media
In paperman form, he's able to do some things that the censors overlook, including tugging on Lan Wangji's headband and apparently blowing him a kiss. In the book and the donghua, he catches onto Lan Wangji's lip on his way down his face, too.
Tumblr media
One thing that's kind of muted in the live action as compared to the novel is how much Lan Wangji enjoys Wei Wuxian's childish and playful behavior. Lan Wangji never got to be playful as a child, but with Wei Wuxian he can cut loose--which he does mostly in the sack or when they're drinking together. But even when he stays in control of himself, he likes Wei Wuxian's silliness.
He tells Paper-Xian, tenderly, to be very careful, before he sends him on his way.
The Adventures of Paperman
The CGI department outdoes itself with paperman, making an animated character so adorable I'd be happy to watch a whole episode of him.
Tumblr media
Paper-Xian sneaks into JGY's study and pokes around, finding an empty envelope. Then he listens and watches while Qin Su stumbles in, retching.
She's followed closely by Jin Guangyao; they proceed to have an absolutely fucking endless argument in which the words "sister," "brother," "incest" "rapist dad" are never said, instead using vagueburger phrasing like "this matter."
Tumblr media
Jin Guangyao does freely admit to killing their kid, though, and wants to know who told Qin Su about it so he can kill them, too. She won't tell him, shockingly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jin Guangyao ends the fight by putting a paralysis spell on his wife and then making her go to sleep with another spell, which is the cultivator equivalent of saying "I've said what I had to say and I need some space."
He takes her into a secret room where he is also keeping a bunch of talisman-protected stuff and a shockingly small number of books.
Tumblr media
Seriously, as a person who has way too many books, I am personally offended by the way Jin Guangyao wastes shelf space in his secret room.
As Paper-Xian sneaks around the room, Jin Guangyao helpfully pulls aside the curtain covering the shelf with Nie Mingjue's head on it, so he can grouse at NMJ for (figuratively) haunting him. Seriously? Dude, you keep a guy's head on your bookshelf, he gonna haunt ya.
Tumblr media
The episode ends with Paper-Xian bowing (adorably) to Nie Mingjue, and then sitting laying on his face, which would make BOTH Lan brothers jealous if they found out.

Why didn't Su She just grab JGY and teleport out of the temple? Was his cultivation level really low? Did he need a recharge??
it's funny you should send me this ask, anon, since it does form the basic premise of a fic I am working on (kind of).
sms's cultivation level and martial arts skills are quite good! before uncovering his identity as the mystery swordsman responsible for absconding with xue yang's body and, presumably, the stygian tiger tally, wwx is impressed by his techniques and capabilities. during the second siege of the burial mounds, sms is the one who leads his moling su disciples in performing the altered song of vanquishing to seal the spiritual energies of everyone else present at the siege--and, once he is found out, he makes use of a teleportation talisman to escape (abandoning his own disciples in the process after tricking them--not a good look, minshan). he's using these talents towards a terrible purpose in this moment, of course, but this speaks to someone who does have a strong cultivation base; his own guqin isn't named in the text, but it is described as a first class spiritual tool comparable to lan wangji's. just because he isn't lan wangji, lan xichen or nie mingjue doesn't mean he isn't a strong cultivator! he's just not a cultivation prodigy.
(though, as an aside, it takes a different kind of gumption and courage to go from being exiled from your sect and branded a coward, to establishing your own sect in mdzs's jianghu.)
so, bearing in mind that he did just exert a considerable amount of that energy during the second burial mounds siege, I do think he was 'running low,' as it were, and didn't have much left in the tank. that said, I do think it's possible that minshan could have made use of a teleportation talisman for both himself and jgy, just because of how much spiritual power he pours into nanping [edit: not nanping!! i forgot that lwj already shattered nanping earlier in the confrontation. so this is a different sword, but i think my point still stands] in his final attack on nmj moments before his death. I am glad that this moment was included in the donghua and very sad it was changed in cql:
Tumblr media
(highlighting that short paragraph up top just to indicate the short-sightedness of huaisang's revenge vision quest here. nmj's fierce corpse is a danger to everyone in this confrontation, not just jgy; moments earlier, he'd not only lunged towards both jin ling and jiang cheng, but even towards lan xichen and huaisang himself.)
I love this paragraph; I love that in this moment, minshan's martial prowess and his strong cultivation base get to shine, because he is a character who has gone through the entire novel belittled and mocked and denigrated by everyone around him because of his cowardice, his inconsistent control over his spiritual abilities, and his decades-long grudge against the gusu lan (and lan wangji specifically). all of that remains true, and in this moment, he is incandescent and capable and putting every scrap of remaining power that he has into this attempt to strike down nmj and protect jgy. it's beautifully and vividly written and demonstrates just how unwavering his devotion is to the only person in the text to consistently treat him with respect and dignity.
that said--
Tumblr media
the moment of his death unfortunately encapsulates his achilles' heel, both as a character and as a cultivator, imo. minshan's problem isn't that he has a weak spiritual core and weak martial arts: it's that he is impulsive and prone to extremely poor judgment in the heat of the moment (case in point: he curses jin zixun for the unforgivable crime of... wounding his pride. I mean, I too think jzn is a cunt, but like, come on minshan). he pours so much dazzling spiritual power into his sword that it shatters, rendering him defenceless in the face of nmj's attack.
imo this is a pivotal moment in the final confrontation in the guanyin temple where both sms and jgy could have escaped exactly as you suggest, anon. if sms has enough spiritual power remaining to accidentally shatter his sword, he probably has enough spiritual power to activate a teleportation talisman (either while nmj is still staring at the empty coffin or after forcing him back with that initial sword thrust) and escape through it with jgy in tow. but he didn't, because that isn't the judgment call he made in the moment.

burning hot take: nmj is/was a better sect leader than nhs. nmj has All His Problems yes but nhs committed to the bit of "im bad at this auuuugh" so hard he convinced everyone on earth that it was true
(inspired by the anon talking about a jc anti 'ranking' sect leaders. do you think there's a jianghu sect leader ranking in universe. personally i do. i do think this)
is there any question??? NMJ had some uh major issues, but he was clearly keeping the Nie sect running smoothly and maintaining their reputation and standing with great success. the succession planning thing is... a huge problem for a sect leader, but if you set that aside, he is clearly succeeding by a lot of metrics
tellingly, very few of those metrics are related to being easy to work with, good at compromise, or pleasant to be around. that is one way to be a good sect leader, but if your goal is the power and prestige of your sect, it's very clear that NMJ's way is working, too
NHS, on the other hand, allows the sect to fall into compete disrepute. people who want him to be this Moriarty-level genius mastermind might argue that maybe he's running the sect well in secret, but if that's the case... a) how has he convinced everyone to keep that secret when it's to their direct detriment to be members of a sect that everyone things is a trash fire and b) part of successfully running a sect is recruitment, so how is it good leadership if everyone thinks your sect sucks and doesn't want to join it, even if that isn't actually true
as for a sect leader ranking, I think you're absolutely right that there is one in-universe, and to some extent we know exactly what it is: the ranking of which sects have the most influence and power. obviously in the immediate aftermath of the war, things are up in the air and influenced by a lot of external factors, but by the time of the present-day storyline, I'd argue that things have leveled out to the extent that the power dynamics we see are a pretty much a reflection of the skill of the current sect leaders. amongst the main sects, we don't know the details of the middle of the list, but there's no question that jin guangyao is at the top and nie huaisang is at the bottom

@tavina-writes asked for arranged marriage fic recs, which turned into...this. Sorry Tav some of these are just very politically plotty but I figured those also fell into your mandate! I was going for a vibe. ANYWAY.
All fics MZDS/the Untamed!
Also under a read more because this got. Long.
CANON DIVERGENCES
marry for love by tuesday (3k, T, complete)
"Nie Huaisang snapped open his fan and covered his face. "Be careful. I'll take advantage.""
50-50 cute and intrigue!
from the other side of sorrow (series) by Sour_Idealist (128k, E, complete)
"Yu Ziyuan cuts off Wei Wuxian's hand. The cultivation world changes."
I couldn't tell you the split on emotional devastation and intrigue on this one because it's all happening all the time.
CANON? I DON'T KNOW HER
The Other Mountain by nirejseki (287k, T, complete)
"Lan Qiren still couldn’t quite bring himself to believe it.
He was married.
He had a wife.
That wife was Wen Ruohan."
I feel like anyone who likes politically plotty fics is already following nirejseki but I also feel like this list would be incomplete if I left off THE arranged marriage fic of all time so.
""You want Wen Ruohan dead," the Patriarch continued idly. "You want his corpse puppets eliminated. You want his halls burned to the ground and his soldiers disemboweled and begging for mercy. Have I about covered it?"
love, in fire and blood by cicer (360k, E, complete)
He gave another knife-edged smile.
"But what will you give me in return?"
"We would be willing to offer quite a bit in return for Wen Ruohan's defeat," Lan Xichen admitted. "But I'm afraid we don't know what an immortal such as yourself desires. Please advise us."
The Patriarch waved at hand at the front of the tent. "I want Second Young Master Lan.""
¯\_( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)_/¯
not too strong by fluffysocks (89k, E, complete)
"He sinks back, closes his eyes again so he doesn’t have to look at all that red silk for a moment. He takes a deep breath.
It’s done. Jiang Cheng is married.
Now he just has to live with it."
Yes this is a Jiang Cheng/Lan Qiren arranged marriage AU. Trust me. Trust me. It's GOOD STUFF.
Restoration by ritualist (85k, M, complete)
"They say he was thrown into Luanzang Gang by the man who killed his parents; they say that he is an immortal cultivator who had been in a deep trance until the Wen sect disturbed his rest and incurred his wrath; they say that he is the fierce corpse of a cultivator who had somehow regained his mind and his spiritual powers. When Lan Wangji sees him for the first time, he understands why people talk.
Meng Yao wants safety. Xue Yang wants vengeance. The Sunshot Campaign wants victory. Yiling Laozu provides, for a price."
I'm a sucker for a nonlinear narrative! I don't want to know what is happening and no spoilers you won't for most of this fic. In a good way.
Give Me A Chance To Fall by brooklinegirl (38k, E, complete)
"Jiang Cheng just blows his breath out and rolls his eyes right back at Wei Wuxian. "Stop being an asshole," he says. "You're lucky this is being set up for you. Do you know how many people would die--literally die--to get the chance to be betrothed to Lan Wangji?"
"Betrothed." Wei Wuxian rolls the word around in his mouth. "It even sounds stupid.""
The classique arranged marriage AU.
JOKES JOKES JOKES
I Started From The Bottom/ And Now I'm Rich by x_los (58k, E, complete)
"Wen Qing traps Wei Wuxian in the Demon Slaughtering Cave, but Wei Wuxian isn’t interested in being the beneficiary of the Wen Remnants’ noble sacrifice. His efforts to free himself accidentally send him back to the beginning of the Sunshot Campaign. Coreless but armed with demonic cultivation, knowledge of the future and his wits, Wei Wuxian takes advantage of this opportunity to come out on top of both the war and its aftermath—before either has a chance to happen—by marrying and swiftly burying the cultivation world’s worst men.
Lan Wangji is confused, hurt, and uncomfortably aroused by Wei Wuxian’s improbably elaborate series of Sect-themed bridal negligees."
I hesitated to include this fic in this section because it does get pretty dark and psychologically heavy but it is also. Hilarious. So!
Best Friends Forever by varnes (17k, T, complete)
"It happened like this: Jin Ling was a sect leader now, which was, and Jingyi really meant this, fucking hilarious. There were few things funnier, in his honest opinion.
Because he was young, and inexperienced, and also — it had to be said — a real shithead, there was apparently some belief amongst his advisors that the best way forward, to promote the picture of a stable, mature sect leader who absolutely did not cry at the drop of a hat, was for Jin Ling to get married.
-
OR: Jin Ling and Jingyi get engaged.
Things spiral from there."
Jingyi POV from varnes is a gift. Jingyi POV trying to figure out the post-canon political landscape is a treasure.

———————
Once the meal is complete, the rest of the Wei family trickling out, including Popo and a reluctant A-Yuan, Lan Wangji presses the talisman book into Wei Ying’s hands so he can present it to Xiongzhang. His husband smiles in gratitude.
“Lan Zhan helped with this because his calligraphy is a lot better than mine,” Wei Ying says. “These are talismans I developed to help deal with different forms of resentful energy, in terms of how to remove it safely.”
Xiongzhang is already flipping through the book, Nie Mingjue beside him and also reading over his shoulder. Jiang Wanyin stands for a better look.
“Different forms?” Nie Huaisang asks. “Isn’t it all just resentful energy?”
Wei Ying shakes his head, adopting something of the air of a scholar, but he’s clearly a little restrained, perhaps still reluctant to discuss his cultivation, fearing judgment.
“It’s dependent on a variety of factors, including the emotion powering the resentment and what ‘vessel’ the resentment inhabits, if any—like you have to handle yao, mo, gui, and guai differently, but it’s even more complex than that basic categorization because of the different factors.”
He’s referring to the differences between resentful creatures, and it reminds Lan Wangji of the disastrous conversion between his husband and his uncle during the lectures at the Cloud Recesses. Wei Ying has been exploring the different ways such creatures should be classified, and has started to identify factors that complicate that classification.
The research is groundbreaking, as few have ever studied resentment for reasons other than gaining power, Wei Ying trying to make the best of his situation by improving cultivation knowledge. Lan Wangji has had the opportunity to read his notes as he transcribed them, and he is endlessly amazed by his brilliance.
“You can pull resentment from objects?” Nie Mingjue asks, his expression inscrutable.
The attention makes Wei Ying shrink a little in his seat, and Lan Wangji takes his hand, squeezing it to reassure him. His hesitance to discuss his cultivation is palpable, and partly his fault for having judged him without listening, even if it was out of concern.
“Often each case requires a slightly different solution, but I can generally figure it out, given time. Some objects can be intrinsically connected to the resentment, while others are simply inhabited by it at random.”
Nie Mingjue considers that and nods, keeping whatever thoughts he has to himself and going back to perusing the book as the next page is turned.
“Truly, Wuxian, these are revolutionary, almost too much for a dowry,” Xiongzhang says finally.
“It’s dowry for Lan Zhan, so if anything it’s far too little,” Wei Ying replies with a laugh.
Lan Wangji’s ears heat at his husband’s regard for him, but he also worries Wei Ying is too self-effacing and doesn’t credit his own brilliance enough—Xiongzhang’s assessment of them isn’t overblown; these talismans are truly priceless in their genius and usefulness.
“Wei Ying’s worth cannot be quantified,” he tells him seriously.
He is gratified when Wei Ying blushes deeply and hides his face, overly dramatic as he tends to be when complimented sincerely, something that he never finds boring.
“Hanguang-Jun, spare your poor husband. Your sincerity is too much,” he murmurs.
“Since when have you been shy at compliments?” Jiang Wanyin asks, amused.
Wei Ying only responds by sticking out his tongue, and his brother rolls his eyes good-naturedly.
“I have made a separate copy of the book for Wei Ying to keep, which may eventually be placed in the library at Lotus Pier,” Lan Wangji tells Jiang Wanyin, ignoring their antics.
He receives a nod of thanks, the Jiang sect leader’s attention already caught when Xiongzhang turns another page, the talismans drawing attention.
“Wei-xiong, we finished the rest of the yuefu,” Nie Huaisang comments, not as riveted by the book of talismans as the others. “Your baihua is better than mine and Wei Ning’s, so you should go over it to make sure it’s right.”
Wei Ning ducks his head at the acknowledgment of his help, shy, and Wei Qing nods her thanks to Nie Huaisang for including her brother. There was concern that he would not be accepted by their visitors, which would cause issues with any swearing of siblinghood, but it’s clear by how Nie Huaisang treats him, giving him back some dignity through not only including him, but also cleaning up his appearance so he once again looks like a young master, that their worries were needless.
Nie Huaisang pulls out the sheaf of parchment containing the poem and sets it in front of Wei Ying with a flourish, clearly proud of his work, and Wei Ying shifts through them until he finds the spot he read last. Wei Ning helpfully brings out an inkstone and brush for him to use if he needs to make changes.
While the respective sect leaders pore over the book of talismans, the rest of them peruse the draft, Wei Ying correcting the baihua as he goes, and once rewriting an entire line in a way that makes it fit the yuefu more organically.
“Nie-xiong, I can’t adopt all the street kids in Yiling,” he says emphatically, though his tone betrays him. “I mean, we can feed them now, at least, but what about when it comes time to move to Lotus Pier?”
“The sect needs people,” Jiang Wanyin cuts in before Nie Huaisang can speak, barely looking up from the book. “You don’t have to adopt them as your kids, just as Wei if they want your name. The ones who have the aptitude can become cultivators, and the others we’ll find a place for. There’s room here now for them, and you and Lan Wangji can start their education.”
Wei Ying stares at him, clearly flummoxed, but Lan Wangji knows this is something his husband would love to do—to give children like himself a home so they won’t have to live in the streets and fight dogs for food.
Nie Huaisang clears his throat pointedly.
“Wei-xiong, it will help with your image. No one will believe the Jin rumors, especially with a gaggle of kids hanging off you.”
“Unless they say we eat them or that I use them in some sort of dark rituals,” Wei Ying mutters darkly. “I’ve heard worse said about the Yiling Patriarch.”
Lan Wangji hates that those rumors exist. They are such an anathema to everything that is Wei Ying, beyond insulting almost to the point of blasphemy against his soul.
“You well know no one will notice the disappearance of street children, so there will be time. By the time it’s noticed enough, I’ll be able to take care of any rumors,” Nie Huaisang says, a determined twist to his lips. “A war without fighting is something I can handle, particularly if it subdues our enemies with less turmoil.”
Nie Mingjue drags his attention from the book to study his younger brother, clearly reassessing him, something Nie Huaisang doesn’t even notice, instead leaning over the table, absorbed in reading the changes Wei Ying has made to the yuefu so far.
“Now that we have enough supplies, I can start a clinic,” Wei Qing adds. “That should sow more goodwill, and we can bring meals for the street children.”
“That’ll work better than anything else—they’ll be wary, so it’ll take time,” Wei Ying says distantly, his gaze unfocused.
Lan Wangji can only assume he is thinking about his own childhood, surviving alone for years, and he remembers the scars from dog bites on Wei Ying’s legs. He offers what comfort he can, placing a comforting hand on his back, and is pleased when his husband relaxes at his touch.
Eventually Xiongzhang and Nie Mingjue wander off with Wei Qing to visit some of the warded areas and discuss future night hunts in the Burial Mounds, and Jiang Wanyin tags along—likely he will also send juniors to night hunt, but he’s really accompanying Wei Qing.
Nie Zonghui stays with Nie Huaisang, but generally stays out of the yuefu discussion except when it involves cultivation; at one point he and Wei Ying have a theoretical conversation about yin energy that ultimately adds nothing to the manuscript. Lan Wangji readily admits it is beyond his understanding, and Nie Huaisang spends the entire conversation looking as lost as Lan Wangji feels, though he is pleased the Nie first disciple isn’t balking at such a discussion or treating Wei Ying with the disdain he’s seen far too many of the gentry levy toward him.
The review and discussion of the yuefu comes to an end less than a ke before the others rejoin them, at which point Nie Huaisang dramatically announces the more interesting changes, largely to gloat over the debates he won.
Xiongzhang at least feigns interest, while Nie Mingjue shakes his head at his didi’s antics, but it’s rather a relief when Wei Ying and Wei Ning both jolt slightly. Not only does he prefer not to have the last few hours rehashed, but he is anxious for the swearing ceremony, if only for the sense that, with that complete, they will be that much closer to bringing Wei Ying home.
Jiang Wanyin seems to understand a moment later, asking “Jie?”
Wei Ying smiles, almost too bright, as though he too is feeling the weight of it all, and Lan Wangji takes his arm to urge him to his feet, letting the gesture remind his husband that he faces nothing alone now.
The Nies and Xiongzhang decide against accompanying them to the base of the Burial Mounds, allowing Wei Ying time to collect himself while accompanied by those he has learned to trust to help him.
Jin Zixuan, surprisingly, is not dressed in gold, but a robe of soft purple with embroidered pink peonies on the hems of the collar and sleeves, a nod to his Jin heritage in the peonies and their color, but also to the Jiang in the color of the robe. Jiang Yanli is wearing a pink robe in the Jin hue embroidered with purple lotuses, an interesting counterbalance to her husband. It is perhaps a nod to visiting the bride’s home and the joining of family, but also one that allows them to stand out a bit less, perhaps looking like late-leaving Jiang wedding guests. They are accompanied by a contingent of Jiang cultivators, as well as a carriage drawn by a duo of nervous-looking horses, which will need to be hidden near the base of the Burial Mounds from any prying eyes.
As soon as they come into view, Jiang Yanli rushes through the ward to her siblings, fussing over Wei Ying’s health, though he has to disentangle himself to key Jin Zixuan through the wards. The latter bows in greeting, and he returns the gesture a bit awkwardly. Some of the Jiang disciples also need to be keyed in.
Once inside, Jin Zixuan only takes notice of Wei Qing and Wei Ning when Wei Ying introduces them, all eyes for his wife, and he bows to them to greet them as well as Lan Wangji and Jiang Wanyin.
Jiang Wanyin passes orders to his men, and Wei Ying tells them where the horses can be tethered.
“It’s where we kept the horses from the labor camp before we sold them,” he says, glancing at Jin Zixuan to gauge his reaction as the Jiang disciples handle unhitching the animals and unloading a number of qiankun pouches from the carriage.
Jin Zixuan simply nods, clearly unconcerned with the matter. Likely the fate of the horses was an afterthought, given the situation.
While they make the trek up to the settlement, Jin Zixuan thanks the siblings for rescuing and protecting Jiang Yanli and her brothers, outright acknowledging the debt, and even apologizing for his sect’s role in Wei Ning’s death.
“There is quite a bit I have been kept in the dark about,” Jin Zixuan says. “A-Li has asked me to discard my preconceptions and see the truth for myself. The rumors about Wei Wuxian have seemed a stretch at best, anyway.”
Wei Ying glances at him, clearly nonplussed since his main interactions with Jin Zixuan have involved physical violence.
“You’ve hit me, but I deserved it both times, and what any of us did during the Sunshot Campaign shouldn’t count against us,” Jin Zixuan explains when he sees the expression. “Except the noble acts of We— er, Wei Qing and Wei Qionglin, of course, but the things we had to do in wartime, to defeat Wen Ruohan…”
He breaks off with a shake of his head.
“We all did what we had to do,” Jiang Wanyin says, taking over. “And we’ll be discussing more about the why at the settlement.”
Lan Wangji catches Wei Ying’s shoulder when he stumbles over a root, keeping him from falling, and Wei Qing elbows Jiang Wanyin none too gently.
“You lot can handle that—Wei Wuxian needs his treatment, and we can reconvene at dinner.”
Blessedly, while Jin Zixuan looks curious, he seems to know better than to pry, and the rest of the trek is spent in an awkward silence.
As soon as they are within view of the settlement, A-Yuan breaks away from Popo and runs to greet his guma, but when he catches sight of their new visitor he skids to a halt so quickly he falls down, wailing and calling “Diedie, Baba!”
While the others freeze, clearly taken aback by A-Yuan’s reaction, Lan Wangji springs forward with Wei Ying to pick up their son before his husband can hurt himself. The child clings to them, sobbing and babbling about the “bad forehead man,” and he realizes he must be referring to the zhushazhi that identifies Jin Zixuan as a member of the Jin clan.
When Jin Zixuan tries to move closer and speak, clearly hoping to calm A-Yuan, the wails turn to terrified shrieks, so full of deep-seated terror that it hurts Lan Wangji to witness. He can see Wei Ying is similarly affected.
Wei Qing joins them while they try to calm him, Wei Ying trying to remind him that this is the good Jin that Jiang Yanli married, her lips pursed as she assesses the situation. A-Yuan is too beyond comfort for the words to reach him, in near-hysterics, and seeing him so distressed makes it clear how badly he was traumatized by what the survivors experienced in the labor camp.
Ultimately, she turns to Jiang Yanli and mimes wiping the vermillion mark away, and blessedly she does so after consulting with Jin Zixuan, her horrified-looking husband completely cooperative. Unfortunately, it does nothing to calm A-Yuan, and Jiang Wanyin quickly organizes the Jiang contingent to block Jin Zixuan from view.
By this time, Xiongzhang and the Nies have arrived, drawn by A-Yuan, along with Popo. Several of the refugees also gather, their expressions sad but devoid of surprise.
“Jiang Wanyin, can you handle updating Jin-gongzi while we handle this?” Wei Qing asks over A-Yuan’s crying, her exhaustion bleeding through into her tone. “Popo and our other guests will be able to help you, particularly Nie Huaisang with the yuefu. I doubt Wei Wuxian wants to be present for most of it, anyway.”
Fortunately, this is readily agreed to by all parties, aside from A-Yuan, who has broken into a coughing fit. By the time the others have left, he’s lost part of his lunch in the dirt and is a whimpering limpet in Lan Wangji’s arms.
“Diedie and Baba won’t let anything bad happen,” Wei Ying tells the boy, even though he’s beyond hearing, having cried himself most of the way to sleep, “and Qing-gugu and Ning-shushu won’t either. You’re safe, baobei.”
Wei Ying starts to use a sleeve to wipe A-Yuan’s face, paying no mind to the high quality of the clothing, but Wei Qing stops him, handing him a clean cloth from a pocket to use instead. He speaks gently and soothingly, just repeating that he’s safe, until the child’s eyes close, his breath hitching occasionally as though he’s still crying even asleep.
Wei Qing gestures toward the cave and Lan Wangji leads Wei Ying, rearranging A-Yuan in his arms so he can guide him by a sleeve, recognizing that this has shaken his husband. They didn’t know how deeply A-Yuan had been scarred in his time at the Jin labor camp, but this has made it very clear in a horrifying and unexpected way to all present. Though they spoke to the boy beforehand to make him aware of Jin Zixuan’s visit, all the warning in the world could do nothing to prevent his terror at just the sight of the zhushazhi, so deeply had he been traumatized.
“None of us could have known,” Wei Qing says as they enter the cave, “so don’t blame yourselves—I can practically hear you doing that, both of you.”
Lan Wangji knows full well that won’t prevent Wei Ying from doing so, and it will be a struggle not to blame himself, especially as he saw the wreckage of the labor camp. They both know what the rescued people here went through, but neither of them considered A-Yuan, with the boy so bubbly and bright.
They remove A-Yuan’s soiled and dirty outer robes, and Wei Ying helps him arrange A-Yuan on the bed, nestled in blankets, his touches gentle as though the boy is made of glass, and then arranges himself nearby after stripping to his zhong yi trousers, making sure he can hold one of A-Yuan’s hands as though to remind him he’s not alone even in his sleep.
Wei Qing’s treatment focuses on his hips, and by the end of it Wei Ying is asleep, as per usual, needing only for the blankets to be drawn up around him, something Lan Wangji does as soon as the last acupuncture needle has been removed. He shifts A-Yuan to be closer to Wei Ying, who instinctively puts an arm around the boy in his sleep.
“I’ll go handle our guests, and come collect you for supper—I expect we’ll do the swearing ceremony afterward,” Wei Qing says brusquely, running a gentle hand through A-Yuan’s hair in a way that belies her tone. “I’ll bring fresh robes for A-Yuan.”
She isn’t the type to offer potentially empty reassurances, and so Lan Wangji isn’t surprised when she simply gathers her supplies and slides the curtain shut behind her without another word.
Lan Wangji is left to the quiet of Wei Ying and A-Yuan’s soft breathing. He can’t help but feel off-balance, A-Yuan’s heartbreaking reaction unsettling. The worry is unavoidable, with one goal so close to being met and yet the relief tempered now with the revelation of the scars on their son’s psyche.
As difficult as it is, he must trust in the others, and so he sets up an inkwell so he can transcribe more of Wei Ying’s notes to put the next half-shichen or so to good use, as his place is beside his husband and son.
—————
So all the Auspicious Eight are at the Burial Mounds ready to swear siblinghood. And yet a wrench in the works: A-Yuan’s trauma triggered by seeing Jin Zixuan’s zhushazhi, the vermillion dot. I did research to figure out how it would be referred to—meta on Tumblr is amazing.
This was a necessary stopping point for this chapter, as it would’ve gone on another 3000 words and taken much longer to get out otherwise. I promise this fic isn’t abandoned, just slow to update as a result of having multiple in-progress multichapter fics and my health issues.
Unsurprisingly, comorbidities popped up in the health area. As expected, treating the primary ones revealed more that need to be treated. It’s a frustrating journey, but I have a wonderful team of doctors that I’ve put together and we’re slowly getting on track to recovery. Good news: I don’t have any markers in tests of other autoimmune diseases. Just the one.

Wen Chao is actually a total sweetheart when it comes to women.
“All right,” Wei Wuxian said, plopping himself right down into the middle of the group of gossiping female cultivators and the somehow omnipresent Nie Huaisang, all of whom turned to give him a look for interrupting. “I’m sorry, I just have to ask, I’m dying of curiosity. Why Wen Chao?”
“What do you mean, why Wen Chao?” one of them asked.
“He’s number eight on the list of most desirable young masters,” Wei Wuxian explained. “Eight. One short of Chifeng-zun – who is, in my opinion, grossly underrated –”
“That’s my da-ge, Wei-xiong, please,” Nie Huaisang said, sounding injured.
“– but at any rate he’s still in the top ten, which seems to me to be completely ridiculous.” Wei Wuxian spread his hands pleadingly. “So I come to petition the experts. Why him?”
“You’re already ranked higher. Why are you complaining?”
“I’m not complaining about my own ranking! It’s just, you know, everyone else I at least understand!”
One of the female cultivators leaned forward with her eyebrows raised. “Oh?” she asked. “Please explain.”
“I mean, the Twin Jades are obvious –”
Nods all around.
“Though I think the order’s mixed up, Lan Zhan is obviously –”
At that point Wei Wuxian was briefly shouted down.
After some enthusiastic arguing, he resumed his point: “Now, I don’t like Jin Zixuan, but I can at least see it, you know? His personality may be mud, but his outside’s decent enough, and of course he’s incredibly rich –”
“I wouldn’t say mud. Maybe…in need of some polish.”
“Yeah, yeah. Anyway, my point is, what in the world does Wen Chao have?! Sure, he’s rich and powerful, too, but…ugh.”
“He’s sweet.”
Wei Wuxian stared.
“He is,” the female cultivator said, shrugging. “I mean, look at how well he treats that maid he fell in love with – like she’s a queen! He won’t tolerate anyone talking down to her, he gives her everything she could possibly even think to want, he’s always thinking of her…”
“He’s married to someone else.”
“So what? His wife went elsewhere first, and anyway he’s clearly ‘on the market’ despite being married.”
“Might as well be married to Wang Lingjiao, though.”
“No bows, no disqualification,” someone declared.
“But does that apply in a situation where you can’t get married? I mean –”
“Flee now,” Nie Huaisang informed Wei Wuxian, who seemed torn between incredible interest and a realization that he’d thrown a beehive into the conversation. “Or else you’re not leaving till morning. And I’m sure you promised Jiang-xiong results, didn’t you…?”
(In the end, Jiang Chang got drawn into the argument, too.)

Would totally understand if you can't/just don't want to anymore; that being said, if you're up to it, I am still very much yearning for that spooky WRH takes over the Nie sect prompt.
I have actually been thinking about this a lot! The difficult part was actually the making it spooky instead of just, like, a whole lot of whump, and while I still don't think I have a fic out of it, I do have some idea notes!
Okay, going off the "no Yin Iron" of the novel, that Wen Ruohan was just a ridiculously strong cultivator driven insane by his own power, let's start with the concept that his madness was the result of a failed attempt to break through to full immortality.
From there, let's say that one of the side effects is that he's now much more sensitive to hearing/seeing spirits than other cultivators.
Which means that while he already had some knowledge of the saber spirits as a result of being one of Papa Nie's oldest and dearest friends, he can now actually see/hear them.
So during that bout of irrational jealousy/wounded pride, he knew exactly what to target to do the most physical damage.
Afterwards, he regrets this! He does! He just killed one of the very few people who understands him the most/best in a childish temper tantrum! How unbecoming of someone of his strength/station!
But he can make amends. He'll just make sure that his old friend's sons will never fall prey to a damaged saber spirit like their father.
Personally.
The obvious way to do this, in his fractured mind, is to simply take over the sect. That way he will always have the boys close to hand and he will be able to manipulate all the saber spirits however he sees necessary.
Of course, when he explains this to his two precious captives adoptees, Nie Mingjue isn't having any of it and loudly denounces him as insane.
So a demonstration of how said spirit manipulation works is in order!
Starting with one of their distant uncles (sorry, Hengbai, you're the only OC I have that fits the bill).
The boys are, naturally, horrified at what's happening to someone they grew up under the care of, with all-of-eight-and-a-half-years-old Huaisang breaking down in tears, begging for it to stop as his brother tries in vain to cover his eyes and ears to shield him from witnessing the torture.
He only puts Hengbai out of his misery when Mingjue gives in and agrees to let him access the tombs on Xinglu Ridge to "fix" the already-quite-insane sabers there.
Which makes Wen Ruohan the master of the masterless sabers on top of all the living saber-wielders, and he has all of the bloodline Nies in his grip.
Ooooh, shit.

SangYao for the Scary OTP? :)
Oooh, SangYao! This should be fun *rubs hands together*. Thank you so much for the ask :D
Which one is more fond of scary movies: Nie Huaisang - he loves them, loves pretending to be scared, especially when Meng Yao's around so he can run to him and cajole him into 'comforting' him. And Meng Yao loves being needed, so even though he's not a fan of the movies, he doesn't mind when NHS puts one on.
Which one gets the most excited about Halloween: BOTH, but for different reasons. NHS loves dressing up, finding the *best* costume and flaunting it, and spending time with all of his loved ones, and what's Halloween but an excuse to have a party? And speaking of parties... this is why Meng Yao gets excited about Halloween, because he gets to PLAN the most fabulous, the best party of the year - and if he happens to choose themes or tweak things a little to accomodate NHS' costume of the year, then none are the wiser ;) And yes, these two would do a KILLER couple's costume!
Which one would be more likely to survive the apocalypse: BOTH. These two are survivors in their own ways, more so than most in the canon (my opinion). NHS has the power of Dage, the puppy dog eyes of cajoling, and an innate ability to fly by the seat of his pants to get what he wants. Meng Yao, for his part, has planned for every contingency, including nuclear apocalypses, and will definitely be among the survivors. And then when you put these two TOGETHER, they are definitely coming out on top!
Which one would literally kill for the other: BOTH. We all know NHS would kill for someone he loves (else canon would not have happened), even if he wont' do the job himself and instead get someone else to do it and take the blame. But Meng Yao tends to classify everyone around him as "those with me" and "those against me", and he would kill for all of those who are in the with him category - of which NHS has always been (and arguably in canon as well, at least until NHS got him killed).
Which one likes to scare or startle the other: Nie Huaisang loves to TRY to startle Meng Yao, but he doesn't *really* try, just pretends to be fun and have an excuse to put his hands on his boyfriend. Meng Yao always hears him coming but pretends he doesn't, so it's a game between them! But Meng Yao unintentionally succeeds at startling NHS - our boy gets very lost in his brain when he's painting or writing or doing anything creative, and Meng Yao can think he's telegraphing his approach so NHS will hear him coming, but NHS doesn't and gets startled no matter what.
Which one is more likely to need comforting when they get spooked: Meng Yao. NHS LOVES being comforted, but he doesn't *need* it. Meng Yao, however, instinctively thinks he's on his own even if his brain knows he isn't, and his childhood has really traumatised him, so when he's spooked, he's SPOOKED. Thankfully, NHS can read people better than Meng Yao can, and at the first hint that Meng Yao needs comfort, he'll hang off of him and pretend it's *him* that needs it, because Meng Yao will NOT ask for it.
Which one always puts on a brave face: Meng Yao, for sure! NHS puts on a coward's face, while Meng Yao has perfected his customer service smile (I consider that his brave face).
Which one would be more dangerous if they suddenly became violent: (Looks at canon). BOTH.
Which one would be more likely to commit a crime: (Looks at canon). BOTH :D
Which one believes in ghosts: In canon, both because it's part of the universe. In an AU, neither - NHS might pretend he does for fun, but he won't believe it if he doesn't see it. Meng Yao is highly skeptical and refuses to believe in anything he can't see, feel, or hear himself, and others' perceptions are rarely to be trusted.
Which one likes to watch spooky show on television: Nie Huaisang, reasons similar to the movies - but Meng Yao doesn't mind letting him ;)
Which one would propose the idea of holding a seance: Nie Huaisang might as a lark, but not seriously. Meng Yao would only suggest it if it's part of a greater plan to do something else, like trick some rich guy out of his money or kill his father.
Which one has nightmares more often: Meng Yao. So many things give him nightmares, from his childhood in the brothel to the Sunshot Campaign.
Which one would want to explore a real haunted house: NEITHER. NHS wouldn't want to get dirty, and Meng Yao would be insulted you'd think he'd go into a death trap that likely hasn't seen renovations in five decades.

Preview:
Alpha females were not unheard of, but they were also not too common. It always took people a few minutes to wrap their head around the concept of them and their existence. Lan Wangji braced herself for any offhand comments or territorial behavior by the two alpha men. But before anything could happen, a powerful scent hit her like a hard punch to the gut and a warm, tight embrace. Lan Wangji’s lips parted in a muted gasp as her body reacted to the scent before she could even understand where it was coming from. Who it belonged to. “Wei Ying!” Wen Qing glared at someone behind Lan Wangji. “Why can you never be on time?” He snarled, but Lan Wangji could tell there was no heat behind the alpha’s words. “Ahh, gege!” Lan Wangji heard a woman’s voice reply, her tone exaggeratedly cute and childish. “I wasn’t late on purpose,” she whined and Lan Wangji could tell she was now closer, close enough for her scent to completely coat Lan Wangji’s senses. Lan Wangji glanced and noticed the woman, equally tall as her, her hair wild and raven black, her grin flirty, her scent unmistakably alpha. “Don’t be mad, gege,” Wei Ying continued pouting. “Disgusting,” Wen Qing frowned. “Don’t do that cutesy thing. It doesn’t suit you at all,” he looked utterly nauseous. “Stop it!” “Why? Does it confuse the alpha in you?” Wei Ying wiggled her eyebrows before breaking into a laugh. “Ah, stop it,” Huaisang appeared and nudged Wei Ying. “This is Wei Wuxian,” she introduced the alpha to Lan Wangji. “And this is Lan Wangji, Xichen-jie’s younger sister,” she smiled at Wei Wuxian. “Hello,” Wei Wuxian turned to Lan Wangji, the curiosity and interest clear as day on her face as she eyed Lan Wangji from head to toe shamelessly. “I’ve heard so much about you,” she licked her lips as she met Lan Wangji’s eyes again. Lan Wangji bit back the ‘shameless!’ that was about to fall out of her mouth and maintained as cool and aloof an expression as she could muster despite the way her throat had gone dry and her toes curled inside her socks. “I haven’t heard of you at all,” Lan Wangji said simply, preparing to excuse herself and hide in the bathroom for at least the next fifteen minutes.

Music Band AU
So, whilst I wait for my writer's block to go away, I am delving properly into this AU.
@felinesomnambulist might appreciate this one in particular, but I hope y'all do <3
Under cur because it's longer than anticipated :')
So, let's start from the Lan clan.
The Lans are classically trained and their Gusu Lan music conservatory is famous for being the best one and also expensive af. You must have the money or, in alternative, several high level recommendations and talent.
The teachers, LQR, LXC and LWJ, are also the best ones and trained in both chinese traditional instruments like the xiao, the qin, the erhu etc, and western instruments like the piano, the strings, the clarinet etc.
The Lans also have a generations long friendship with the Nie family, whose last heirs, NMJ and NHS, inherited the music production studio from their father, dead in mysterious circumstances, probably linked to the boss of the underground Nightless City Wen Ruohan.
I will come back in a bit to Nightless city, hold onto this for a moment.
The friendship between the Nie and the Lan surprises everyone until you understand that the Nie production studio is for Power/Epic/Symphonic metal, a kind of metal that uses a LOT of classical instruments.
On top of this NMJ is also the founder of a metal band thus composed:
Vocals: Meng Yao
Guitars: Nie Zonghui
Bass: Nie Huaisang
Drums: Nie Mingjue
Spoken/poems: Nie Huaisang
Classical instruments: Lan Xichen
The Nie music studio is in a constant struggle not to be annexed by the famous Jin Studio, promoter of the AU equivalent of stuff like X-factor, The Voice and so and churning out pop talents out of capitalistic greed masked as "caring for the music".
Their most famous pop sensations are sweet cute and lively pop idol Jiang Yanli and alternative rap pop rage Wei Wuxian. They tried doing the same with Jiang Cheng, but Jiang Cheng really doesn't have the cheerful tones of a pop singer, in spite of having the best voice outof the three.
I did mention that JFM and YZY are one of those who are like “yeah, my child is so gifted and talented, let’s ruin their life forever by forcing them in the music industry” and the Jin studio just did help them achieve that exactly.
Spoiler: this will come back to bite their asses somehow. In fact, the original plan was to have only JYL and JC, but JFM HAD TO let in WWX, son of the legend of music Cangse Sanren, ho had been already the daughter of the myth, Baoshan Sanren.
And LWJ is an avid listener of WWX's music, he is propery enamoured, but neither shufu nor xiongzhang kno because god forbid the Lans listen toanything BUT classical music. This is another thing I will come back later on.
YZY is legitimately furious at the fact that her children's thunder has been stolen that way, but neither JFM nor YZY see that regardless the three do love each other dearly.
And then JGS decides to renew the contracts for JYL and WWX because they are his golden egg geese, but NOT JC's, because his pop album did not make as much money, as in, not being allowed to do anything but pop music, his voice suffered a bit and being the family disappointment did not really help.
Anyway, JFM and YZY fight, he decides to leave in the middle of lunch (a further sin in such a family), JYL and WWX try to convince him not to go without any success at all.
And so he roams the city, trying to find some motivation to go on.
In the meantime JGS has successfully poached out Meng Yao from the Nie, and the band is in need of a vocalist, but who would like to be the vocalist of a symphonic metal band tiedtoa studio barely making it at the end of the month?
NMJ is out of wits. And the amplificators just broke down so he has to finally admit that he needs new ones and so he goes to the Yao&Ouyang music shop to buy some new ones.
In the meantime JC has also reached the same music shop and Mr. Yao has convinced him to try a mic and when JC is asked what he would like to sing he's like "yeah I am angry enough for a cover of 'we're all to blame' by Sum41" and NMJ is casually there too and he listens to JC sing and he feels the doors of heavenly music open right in front of him, has 16 epiphanies and by the end of it he's like:
Tumblr media
Anyway. NMJ approaches JC after the performance and he is like:
"nice one, my name is Mingjue, I loved your vibes. What do you say about joining my band?"
He hands out the business card, proves that he is not, in fact, just a creep but an actual person who actually enjoyed JC's voice and is actually trying to convince him to join a metal band.
JC is kind of taken aback, as in "someone just PRAISED me? ME? A RAT? for my VOICE? The same voice everyone I know thinks it's actual CRAP?"
JC my beloved, how about we work together on our self esteem issues?
*coffcoff* Anyway, NMJ makes sure to point out that there is no pressure, he is welcome to try out a session and then if it doesn't work out nothing happens, no one is going to hound him etc. Somehow JC feels better, like the choices he has been given make him feel free to decide for himself for the first time.
And he says yes, I want to come and do this music session with your band, it does sound great if the people there are all like you.
And NMJ is left wondering what kind of hellish situation this one has been living in.
Anyway JC comes back all happy and content, BUT makes the mistake of telling JYL and WWX what happened. They in turn let JFM and YZY know and they basically laugh in JC's face.
JFM: well, at least that lousy studio will finally get annexed to JGS's and disappear.
YZY: you are going to ruin everything, you don't understand anything! You'd better stay here, at least all you'll ruin is us.
*uuuhhhh just a sec, this hit home for me, the author, let me cry in a corner for 5 mins*
*coffcoff* JC, full of dismay and with an ego completely crushed once again, calls NMJ to tell him he is not coming, but NMJ KNOWS that tone. Has NMJ just sensed a shitty family and all of the parental disappointment? Has he just heard JC trying to hold a faint sob from behind the phone? This does NOT happen, not on NMJ's watch! And he is like, look, I am sending my brother, the least menacing person on earth so no one is scared to see me, a 6ft tall buff man with enough piercings and tattoos to scare even the strong of heart. You are going to go with him, let him buyyou a coffee and then decide.
And so it happens. Providence has made it so that the house is empty because JFM and YZY had to take JYL and WWX to the studio to register their new albums, so JC is alone.
And NHS arrives, JC lets him in, NHS assesses the situation, asks a few questions that hit right where it hurts and then he is like: JC, my newly acquired friend, I am not saying you should pack everything you own and come with me, but I am saying exactly that. You do NOT have an independent bank account, you do NOT have a space unless someone grants it from the gracefulness of their heart and you MUST sing crap just to be granted a sliver of sympathy from those who claim to love you. My brother has offered you an space in the band, but really, even if you do not join you are welcome to stay as much as you wish until you know what you want to do in life.
JC: are you offering me this out of pity?
NHS: not pity, I don't have enough of that. It's out of friendship.
And so JC is convinced once again. Maybe staying away from his family will make him assess things better.
NHS calls the whole family and they help JC pack everything. They help him set up his own bank account. He will withdraw some cash at the nearest ATM so that he can then put the funds in the newly opened bank account.
JC leaves a message as in "do NOT look for me atm, I am reassessing my priorities".
And with all of that done JC goes with the Nie and starts living under their roof. He does the first music session as a vocalist and - surprise - he actually has fun, he smiles,he finally can let his voice out freely and everyone now understands why NMJ wanted him as a vocalist.
And as a surprise for everyone NMJ manages to get a contract to be the opening band of a major symphonic metal band - spoiler: it is a success, NMJ's band and studio are launched into the stratosphere, everyone loves the band and especially the new vocalist JC.
But how are the Jiangs faring now? Well, JC's message has prompted the divorce between YZY and JFM, so not great in that sense. JGS has used that to force JYL into an arranged marriage with his son JZX - it's not that the two don't like each other, it's the opposite actually, but they would have loved to come together in different circumstances. In any case, they both do not want what their respective parents had so they work together to make the best out of the shitty situation. They will eventually get married, but on their own terms.
And where is WWX? Well. In his quest to find JC, because the message "do NOT look for me" for him was apparently just a guideline, he stumbles into Nightless City and its many wonders and horrors.
As mentioned, Nightless city is an underground city where crime reigns above everything. He lets himself get lost in the City, he gets tattoos, piercings and a penchant for alcoholism and hedonism.
In any case WWX disappears from the scene, the tabloids will talk about it like a meteor bound to fall. JC wants to look for him, JYL too, but no matter what WWX cannot be found.
This until LWJ, who is still the no. 1 fan of WWX, finds him loitering by a shop. And WWX has changed a lot. His eyes are swollen, he looks like he's not been eating properly and has a hand secured around a bottle of an unspecified alcoholic beverage.
It turns out he has been captured by Wen Chao who - surprise - was a great fan and then forced to sing for him. Which at the time catered to his willingness to have free everything, but then it turned out to be another cage and now that he was spent he had been thrown away like trash.
And now WWX finds himself with a whopping case of trauma and alcohol addiction.
In any case, LWJ cannot stand the fact that the person he has been enamoured with for the past few is now at that point. And so he offers him a meal, he offers him to stay at his house, asks xiongzhang if he could help him speak to shufu.
And shufu is not truly convinced until NMJ and band drops by, JC included, and JC launches himself towards WWX. "Where were you bro, a-jie and I were so worried!"
"I wanted to find you bro"
"I was fine, I wrote to mum and dad that I was fine a few days later, did they not let you know?"
"No?"
"Oh, for fuck's sake."
NMJ interjects: "That shows you ho shitty your parents are,my love"
Yes, in the meantime NMJ and JC got together, NMJ properly courted JC and are now very close to an official engagement.
Anyway, JC lets Yanli know and his prompts her decision to detach herself from JGS's brand. JZX has started his own with some help from MY, now called JGY, ho has in the meantime realized how much of a scumbag JGS actually is.
MY has in fact been exploited for his talent in composing songs and lyrics, he has even been called JGY in a vain promise of being finally recognized as a legitimate son, which has never happened and will never happen, but guess WHO has been treating him like proper family? JZX and JYL, hence his loyalties are all for them.
And so,to recap:
JC is now about to be engaged to NMJ and they both are in a famous studio and an equally famous band andeveryone loves them.
JYL and JZX are marrying and having a child, JZX has hsi own studio which is totally unaffiliated with his father's and everybody loves them for basically being the healthiest and most loving relationship in the whole industry.
LWJ is working with LXC to convince LQR to give WWX some support and maybe having him direct a singing/voice coaching workshop so he has something to lean onwhilst he recovers and decides what to do next
JFM and YZY are permanently divorced and not in speaking terms anymore. I am kind of leaning into YZY finding comfort in WZL's arms, hich will involve more drama when she finds out ho WZL actually is.
I wonder what could go wrong. JGS is not happy, he might even think to go to WRH and get involved in shad stuff to ruin everyone's life, but at this point my brain is failing and IDK, I kind oflike this open ending, but I feel something is missing.
Suggestions are more than welcome here.
For the moment I will peace out.

Cafe Meet Cute
Wei Ying walks into a quaint local cafe. He's never been here before, but the annoying rush that always hits Starbucks and Timmies never really hits the local privately owned places. Or so he's heard.
Nie Huaisang sang praises about Wangji Cafe.
So, after weeks of struggling against the long lines of people to get a fix of (objectively subpar) caffeine, Wei Ying finally gave in.
Wangji Cafe.
Supposedly it's owned by someone who's his age which, if you ask him, is insane because he's only 3! Definitely not an adult.
People tell him he's a "fully functioning adult" which seems ironic and entirely hilarious to him. Fully functioning, right.
Wangji Cafe is quiet. There's a sort of tranquility that seeps into his very bones, humming softly the moment he steps in through the door.
It's is huge contrast to the big chains.
He likes it.
Wei Ying takes a moment to breathe deeply, letting the calm wash over and reset him from the constant motion of life.
After a moment, he walks up to the counter, still looking around the room (good Feng Shui) and orders.
"Could I get a large, black coffee to go?" he asks.
"How will you be paying?" a low voice responds and instantly draws his attention.
"Cash..." Wei Ying says, the word peters out when he lays eyes on the person—man—heavenly being behind the counter.
Wei Ying stares, mouth slightly agape, and takes in the sight. Tall. Taller than him by a bit. Long, flowing hair as dark as night. Amber eyes that glitter gold in the soothing cafe light. A face. Oh does he have a face!
The man—Lan Zhan he/him, the name tag says—is stunning.
In his life, Wei Ying has seen many people who are beautiful inside and out. But never has he seen someone who makes him stop; someone who completely rearranges his neurological pathways.
Until today.
Until Lan Zhan.
The most outwardly beautiful person in existence.
Wei Ying hopes—no, he knows that Lan Zhan is just as, if not more, beautiful on the inside too.
And so he stares.
After a moment, Lan Zhan reaches out his hand, palm up and Wei Ying (no thoughts, neurons out of order) places his own hand on top.
Wei Ying and Lan Zhan stand in stasis, gently holding hands out the cafe counter. It's warm and safe and right.
Then Lan Zhan turns his head to the side, hair swishing (was that redness on his ear?) and clears his throat. He doesn't remove his hand from under Wei Ying's.
"Cash," Lan Zhan says, voice quiet and slightly strained.
Wei Ying is confused, then it hits him. Cafe! He's at a cafe! He ordered coffee and Lan Zhan held out his hand for the cash! AND WEI YING JUST—
Face heating up quickly, Wei Ying pulls his hand back, missing the warmth.
"Ah! Ahaha... Sorry," he says, sheepishly rubbing the back of his neck before pulling out the money to pay for his coffee. "There."
Wei Ying places it in Lan Zhan's outstretched hand. Lan Zhan gives a quick nod, putting it in the till before moving to pour his coffee.
In the wait, Wei Ying spirals, completely embarrassed at his own stupidity. How could he just... Do that? What was he thinking?
No, he knows the answer: he wasn't.
Well! He came, he saw, he enjoyed (far too much), and he will never step foot here again. He simply cannot.
Lan Zhan places the cup on the counter and Wei Ying rushes over to grab it, bowing while he thanks and apologizes profusely. Lan Zhan hums in ascent, an acceptance, and Wei Ying speeds out of the cafe with his heart pounding violently in his chest.
He makes it a couple blocks away, power walking like his life depends on it, and collapses on the first bench he sees.
Wei Ying leans back, sliding down slightly, and lets out a long groan. Idiot! Why couldn't he have been smooth and suave, charming the godly man?
He mourns the lost opportunity to have Lan Zhan in his life. How cruel this world is. For all that Wei Ying is a flirt, he apparently CANNOT do it when it counts. Cool. Swell. Good to know.
With a huff, he sits up and looks at the cup gripped tightly in his hand.
He pauses. There's... writing.
Carefully, he brings it closer, shifting his hand to reveal it all.
'To the holder of hands and hearts, here is my number if you desire to reach out to me. Text or call, Lan Zhan.'
Then a phone number written in a clean font.
He...
All thoughts disappear completely and his brain goes silent.
He got his number? Without even trying?
Wei Ying stares at it before his brain reboots and he fumbles for his phone frantically. He punches the number in and hits call before he remembers Lan Zhan is working.
He picks up before the second ring finishes.
"Hello?" Lan Zhan's deep, smooth voice rings out.
"H-hi! It's uh, Wei Ying. Oh! You don't actually know my name yet, do you? Haha! Well it's Wei Ying, the um... The 'holder of hands and hearts' as you said." He worries his lip.
"Mn. Hello Wei Ying," Lan Zhan replies.
Wei Ying practically melts. The way that voice says his name? Killer.
Perhaps a small whimper slips out without Wei Ying realizing. And perhaps Lan Zhan's quick breath is actually an amused huff of laughter.
"Are you free this evening?" Lan Zhan asks.
Wei Ying's eyes widen. "Y-yes! Free. Very free. No plans, none."
Lan Zhan hums. "Would you like to have plans?"
Wei Ying nods before he remembers: phone call. Lan Zhan can't see him. "Mhm, yes. Yep. Plans are good."
"Good," Lan Zhan says and Wei Ying bites down on a whine. ('Good' he says. 'Good!') "Meet me at my cafe at 7?"
"Sure thing-a-roo!" Sure thing-a-roo??? What the hell is his mouth doing, betraying him so? Never has he said that before, of course he says it now!
"Wait! Your cafe?"
Lan Zhan hums. "Wangji Cafe is mine."
Wei Ying's mouth falls open. "But you're so pretty—I mean handsome—I MEAN YOUNG! YOU'RE SO YOUNG!"
WHY? Why cruel world?
There's another huff of laughter. "Mn. I will see you at 7, Wei Ying."
"Mhm!" he replies because he doesn't trust his mouth to make words anymore.
They hang up and he sits in shock for a while.
He has... a date? An actual date? With the most perfect person to have ever personed? Well, perhaps he's died and gone to heaven because how?
He looks at the cup. Writing still there.
He looks at his phone. Call with that number.
It was real.
He really has a date with Lan Zhan!
Wei Ying laughs loudly and freely, buckling over in his seat. The best thing to happen to him in the most absurd way.
He leans back with a sigh, wide smile on his face.
Today is going to be a good day.
----------
END! I hope you enjoyed my silly little meet cute thread. The idea came to me while driving the other day and I had to get it out and into the world! Love these two guys so much 😭🖤

writing pattern game
Rules: Share the first line of your last ten published works or as many as you are able and see if there are any patterns! (from most recent to least recent, starting from the top)
I was tagged by both @scurator and @b1uetrees. Thank you, friends!
1. Notoriety (Crowley/Aziraphale)
They give him a desk.
2. Heritage Site (Touya/Yue)
Over the course of his lifetime, Yue has borne witness to so many spectacular things that precious little moves him anymore.
3. Gift Horse Dentistry (Dong-sik/Ju-won)
The first time they fuck, it takes nearly two minutes for Ju-won's vision to come back, and as he shivers and gasps up at the ceiling, he thinks, well, that can't be right.
4. Resonant Frequency (Dong-sik/Ju-won)
His vision blurs, the ceiling fan above the bed going fuzzy and shapeless, spreading out like spilled tea, and through the haze of pleasure Ju-won can hear his own breath punching out of his lungs, the slapping of skin against skin.
5. Rescue Breathing (BE gen)
It used to be a running joke that somewhere inside Lee Dong-sik was an endless supply of self-restraint, because no one was able to harness their own destructive tendencies the way he could.
6. A Twist of the Knife (MDZS gen, Nie Huaisang-centric, background NieLan)
Nie Mingjue had been the kind of man the cultivation world saw maybe once a century: powerful, talented, with a core that burned like a sun.
7. but the sun is eclipsed by the moon (Thranduil/Bard)
The Battle of the Five Armies threatened to unmake the world, but The Negotiations of the Three Kings might actually succeed.
8. The Promises of Supercells (Otabek/Yuri pre-slash)
"What are you doing?"
9. Islands of Hours (Joe/Nicky)
Eventually there comes a lull—at least enough of one that they feel no guilt whatsoever in abandoning Nile to the same brutal and incredibly necessary training they all endured at some point under Andy's unforgiving tutelage—and so they go to Malta.
10. A Most Forgetful Death (Joe/Nicky)
"You're an incurable romantic," Nicky says, and though his expression doesn't so much as twitch, Joe can hear the laughter languishing between the words, can feel it on his tongue and rubbing up against his teeth when Nicky meets him halfway to smear a kiss against his mouth.
I don't really see any discernible patterns, although I think one was starting to take shape for Beyond Evil. Between GHD and RF, and all my WIPs, I sure do like to keep that boy aching and bamboozled.

Do you mind if I ask your top 10 favorite characters (can be male or female) from all of the media that you loved (can be anime/manga, books, movies or tv series)? And why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before.....Thanks....
This is a difficult one! I've loved a LOT of characters over the years even if the current blorbo of interest is NHS from MDZS/CQL bc he's just such a fun little guy BUT lets see if I can try to do this chronologically and not in like, any character ranking fashion:
1 & 2: these two characters are absolutely the rulers of my heart: Huang Rong and her father, Huang Yaoshi from Legend of the Condor Heroes by Jin Yong. I just love my beloved spoiled conwoman princess and her insane evil wuxia version Maes Hughes dad so much. I could write so many essays about the Huangs and how they mean so much to each other and also to me. I'm always insane about family members who have complex relationships with each other and that's super evident with them.
3. Uchiha Madara from Naruto. Now, people who have known me for a long time know that I am a Naruto girlie, and that I skipped all the way to "Sasuke's Insane and Sad Pathetic Ancestor" on the character likes list. I love insane murder men and Madara is an insane murder man! He's also very sad. What's there not to like about him truly.
4. Mirasol from Chalice by Robin McKinley. I have a deep love for beauty and the beast narratives and this one ALSO had magic bees. I love Mirasol for her kindness and her devotion even in the wake of massive change and I have a special fondness for the entire story of Chalice both for the lovely worldbuilding and also Mirasol herself.
5&6. Sansa Stark and Cersei Lannister from A Song of Ice and Fire. I really really love both of these characters for entirely opposing but also really similar reasons! I love them for their flaws. For being stuck in their positions in a world that's really just! not! kind to them! and how they take that and go in such different directions.
7. Sheng Rulan from The Story of Minglan. I have such a soft spot for Rulan. She's petty, she's spoiled, she has so much love and holds onto her principles and her dreams so tightly, she's her father's least favorite child despite also being a legitimate daughter, she finds love, she's so cute, she's the clearest sighted of all four of the Sheng sisters, she's got such a growth arc to her, I love her SO SO MUCH. (I love all three of her sisters too don't get me wrong, Rulan is just my favorite.)
8. Wei Yingluo from The Story of Yanxi Palace. Yingluo! My girl! Never have I ever seen a female lead with so much pent up rage and desire to get even in a story that does not judge her for her hard edges and her propensity for violence. I love that about her. I love how kindness and cruelty and how her quest for vengeance never destroys her ability to love and care for others and recognize other people's genuine kindness and the difficulties other people face in life. I love her shrewdness and her determination to survive too! I'm just! So fond of her!
9. Jaskier from The Witcher (TV). I RARELY TALK ABOUT. MY UNAGING BARD BLORBO. BUT I LOVE HIM. I love the messy relationship Jaskier, Geralt and Yennefer have in the Witcher TV show and I REALLY love the way that Jaskier is portrayed. I don't know anything about the games but! I just! I love! This annoying kind of foppish man because annoying foppish male characters are another beloved character archetype for me, see below.
10. Nie Huaisang from The Untamed/Modao Zushi. Beloved Blorbo. Little crimes man. Unfilial and spoiled. Beloved for being SO jiggly and full of trauma and his tragedy is writ large to me because it! powers! the plot! without his tragedy there is no plot! he burns down his social circle because he loves his brother! There's just so much in here that's like, oh god. I love that he's an annoying foppish dandy and that he loves his pets and creature comforts and that he doesn't enjoy working hard and has so many problems. This too is life. I love this little guy I want to rotate him for a good long time.

Till Death Do Us Part
by 0nlyxicheng (suibianne) "If you go through this door... I'll not forgive you." "Then hate me... If it makes you feel better, hate me, Jiang Cheng." Jiang Cheng walked towards him. His face was full of anger, full of contempt for himself. He grabbed Xichen's hand in a final attempt at persuasion. He cried. "...What am I to you? Why are you doing this to me?" You've always been everything to me... "You're nothing to me." "Lan Xichen, you're heartless scum!"
