Neurodivergent reminder: Overstimulation feels a lot like anxiety, and understimulation feels a lot like depression.
More importantly, you don't need to know which it is to practice self-care.
Self-caring anxiety and overstimulation looks the same:
Recognize you're feeling big feelings
Take as many deep breaths as your need to slow your mind
Identify what’s causing the feeling, whether sensory, environmental, or situational
Minimize that cause as much as possible immediately
Self-caring depression and understimulation looks the same:
Recognize you’re in need of stimulation
Turn on an interesting long-form video of some kind
Do some quick exercise like a walk or jumping jacks
Call a friend that'll let you infodump
If you're neurodivergent and easily get stuck on labelling things — I see you.
I'm here to remind you that you don't need to know what it is to take care of it in the meantime.

I hate talking about the fact that I have paranoid delusions bc ppl always feel the need to use it as "proof" that all my words should be discredited or that I must be miserable and alone or that I should be put in an asylum etc etc etc.
I'm a normal person. You pass me in the streets. You smile at me and wave at me. You hold the door open for me. You compliment my outfit. I'm not a danger, nor am I miserable or unfit for society. I am a normal person.
If you find out someone has delusions and immediately use it against them, you are ableist. No way around it. You are ableist.

as someone who has experienced abuse from someone with a personality disorder, it's actually incredibly easy to not dehumanize everyone with a personality disorder. i've seen people do borderline eugenic rhetoric surrounding people who have npd, aspd, bpd or other personality disorders, and then be like "I'M allowed to say these things because i'm a survivor, and if you disagree you are hurting abuse victims."
and frankly? i'm tired of it. as an abuse survivor i'm here to say that you're NOT allowed to turn into a fucking eugenicist the moment you're hurt by someone with a personality disorder.
does hurting and belittling other people who happen to have the same disorder as your abuser, people that are already suffering and that are already looked down on by society, bring you any healing? does it bring you peace?
Being hurt by someone isn't an excuse to hurt others that you feel justified in lashing out on. you're literally in control of your own actions,
you may claim to be making a safe space for abuse survivors, but i will never feel any solidarity with you, and i ESPECIALLY don't feel safe with you considering i might have a personality disorder.
you are excluding a large amount of abuse survivors in the name of "advocacy". a lot of people with personality disorders developed one or multiple due to heavy abuse. in the aim of creating a safe space, you are excluding the ones who need a safe space the most.

i love schizophrenics. i love psychotic people, i love people on the schizospectrum, i love people with DID and OSDD, i love people with NPD, i love people with PPD, i love people with SPD, i love people with ASPD, i love people with personality disorders, i love people who hallucinate, people who have delusions, and people who have paranoia. i love people who are mentally ill in ways that are viewed as strange and scary by society.
it is not your fault that you struggle. you are valid. you are deserving of care and you are deserving of love. your issues do not negate any of that.

I feel like a lot of the personality disorder criteria in the DSM-5 focuses on the outward appearance of the disorder rather than what the person with the disorder is actually feeling. Npd and aspd are what I’m thinking of as examples right now, so let’s go over those first. People with any sort of personality disorder, feel free to chime in and add any thoughts you may have on how the DSM-5 represents your disorder.
Npd’s symptoms in the DSM-5 are listed as:
A persistent pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and lack of empathy
An exaggerated, unfounded sense of their own importance and talents (grandiosity)
Preoccupation with fantasies of unlimited achievements, influence, power, intelligence, beauty, or perfect love
Belief that they are special and unique and should associate only with people of the highest caliber
A need to be unconditionally admired
A sense of entitlement
Exploitation of others to achieve their own goals
A lack of empathy
Envy of others and a belief that others envy them
Arrogance and haughtiness
The focus is on how other people might see someone with the disorder rather than what someone with the disorder might feel. As someone with npd, the main symptom of the disorder is lack of self-esteem. Someone with npd very well might experience or do these things BECAUSE of a lack of self-esteem, but I feel like the lack of self-esteem isn’t focused on enough for how much it impacts everything else. Honestly I’d go as far as to say it’s the very root of the disorder (y’know, besides trauma. But the low self-esteem is caused by trauma so, you get what I mean).
Now, I don’t personally have aspd myself, but from what I’ve heard from people with the disorder (people with aspd feel free to chime in), anhedonia is pretty much the biggest symptom? But if you look at the criteria it’s…
A persistent disregard for the rights of others
Disregarding the law, indicated by repeatedly committing acts that are grounds for arrest
Being deceitful, indicated by lying repeatedly, using aliases, or conning others for personal gain or pleasure
Acting impulsively or not planning ahead
Being easily provoked or aggressive, indicated by constantly getting into physical fights or assaulting others
Recklessly disregarding their safety or the safety of others
Consistently acting irresponsibly, indicated by quitting a job with no plans for another one or not paying bills
Not feeling remorse, indicated by indifference to or rationalization of hurting or mistreating others
And again, it’s not like people with aspd CAN’T experience or do these things BECAUSE of their anhedonia, but I really feel like that should be emphasized. Anhedonia isn’t even LISTED as a symptom. But when I listen to people with aspd talk about their experiences, the most commonly talked about symptom is generally feeling extreme boredom constantly, aka anhedonia. Again, people with aspd feel free to correct me and or add any thoughts you may have.
Looking at the criteria now, I see the same sort of issue with stpd (though I see this issue to an extent in the criteria for every personality disorder). I don’t have stpd myself so if you do, feel free to correct me or add anything, but I swear to god if I have to see the word “odd” or “eccentric” or “peculiar” one more fucking time. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN!!!!! The definition of those words is going to be different from person to person. It literally feels like they’re saying “I have diagnosed you with ABNORMAL disorder.” Like…please be more specific, I’m begging. What do you mean by ODD? What classifies “odd” behavior?
