Things the Gods Get Mad at Mortals For: And Why You Shouldn't Stress Over It
[The Gods Descending to Battle, from The Story of the Iliad. A.J. Church, 1892.]
Before I even get started here, let me be clear that this post isn't meant to shame anyone for their anxieties involving the divine. There are plenty of reasons why someone might be worried about these sorts of things, and in my opinion it's far more productive to talk these things out instead of point and laugh. So, truly, I hope that I manage to get across the point that hey, you're really not doing so bad when you think about it.
There are two cases I won't be touching on here: literally physically harming a god (such as Diomedes injuring Aphrodite) and disobeying the natural order (such as Asklepios bringing back the dead), just because the likelihood of any average human managing either of those things seems pretty slim. Now let's get on to the good stuff.
Breaking the Rules of Sacred Precincts/Temples
Each temple and temenos had its own specific set of rules for conduct, depending on the locality as well as the god to which the place was dedicated. Generally, the consequences for breaking these laws were carried out by other mortals, but quite a few folks in myth received divine comeuppance as well. Some examples of this include having sex in a temple, assaulting a priestess, or desecrating a sacred image. This one is another unlikely modern case, mostly due to the scarcity of modern temples and sacred places of the theoi, so I won't dwell on it much.
Breaking Oaths/Disobeying Direct Orders
Despite common advice against swearing oaths, plenty of folks still do it. Hell, some of the strongest arguments against swearing frivolous oaths come from people who have sworn an oath to a god. They're really not to be taken lightly. But anyways, what's important here is your follow-through.
One of the most succinct descriptions of oaths to a god that I've read was to consider them a "conditional self-curse." There's an entire daimon out there who specifically punishes oath-breakers and perjurers, and Hesiod takes no care to sugarcoat how serious he is. He describes Horkos as "[He] who most troubles men upon earth when anyone willfully swears a false oath." Zeus also presides over the swearing of oaths with the epithet Horkios, and I shouldn't need to explain to you why you shouldn't want to get on the bad side of Zeus.
Take the story of Minos of Krete. To prove that he held divine favor, Minos prayed for Poseidon to bring forth a bull from the sea, and he promised he would sacrifice it when he received it. Poseidon answered the prayer and sent him a bull, but then Minos tried sacrificing a different bull to Poseidon instead. Angry at this broken promise, Poseidon not only turned the gifted bull wild so that Minos could not keep it, but he cursed Minos' wife Pasiphaë with lust for the bull.
Aside from oaths in particular, sometimes a god would give out a direct order to a mortal which would later be ignored. Take Athene, for example, forbidding Aglauros, Pandrosos, and Herse from looking inside the chest that contained the infant Erikhthonios. Pandrosos obeyed this order, but Aglauros and Herse opened the chest and were driven mad.
Failing to Show Proper Hospitality
There have been plenty of posts written about the sheer importance of xenia in hellenic polytheism that I won't bother to give you another lecture on it, but it cannot be overstated that xenia is important in contact between both mortals and gods. Again, there are several gods with the epithets Xenios or Xenia who preside over this exact thing. There are many stories of the consequences of not practicing hospitality, from Odysseus' retribution against Penelope's suitors to Apollo and Artemis bringing a plague down on Aigialea when its inhabitants turned them away. General rule of thumb, just don't be a dick, especially when someone is coming to you for help.
Claiming to be Better Than the Gods
Mortals in myth sure did love to just say shit, huh. There are so many examples of this that I won't even focus on a specific one. You've got Niobe claiming to be better than Leto, Arachne and Athene, Agamemnon and Artemis, the list goes on and on. Basically, just don't say that you're better than the gods at something.
Mortals who insulted the gods were also often met with divine retribution. In modern times, though, there is still an abundance of people who like to talk smack about the gods. Gods like Zeus or Hera or Demeter, who tend to get some of the worst treatment in modern media depicting the gods, would be spending a lot of time and energy doling out punishments if they cared about every case of this. I think one of the defining differences here is that most of these folks doing the talking don't believe in the gods in the first place. Rather, they're treated as fictional characters to be picked apart. If a person doesn't believe in them, what lesson would they learn from a punishment from one of them?
Intentionally Scorning a God's Rites
Big emphasis on intentionally here. The Lemnian women intentionally scorned Aphrodite's worship. Pentheus intentionally banned the worship of Dionysos. They consciously disobeyed what was expected of them at the time and faced the consequences for it, and these commitments were not trivial.
There are some cases of careless mistakes in this realm too, such as Admetus neglecting to include Artemis in his matrimonial sacrifices. In cases such as this one, I think it is important to remember that these practices were very much solidified in ancient society, unlike how we try to reconstruct them now. These things were just What They Did, and due to the prevalence of these practices, Admetus should've known better and taken more care.
It should be pretty evident by now that none of these cases of divine punishment are trivial issues, and most of them are very much intentional. Though the gods can get mad, the bar for getting a god mad at you is pretty damn high. Some of the things I've mentioned above don't even translate to modern worship at all, and others have a lot more nuance in practice than in myth. Honest mistakes, genuinely not knowing better, uncommon offerings, or going slightly off-the-beaten-path in your practice are unlikely to get anyone angry with you.
As I've said in the past, the gods probably don't enjoy seeing their worshipers stumble and fall. They're not ignorant of our situations and struggles as mortals that might prevent us from worshiping in ways that we'd like to. And if you're truly concerned about something you did, you can talk it out with them.
I hope that this is able to ease some of the anxieties of modern worshipers and allow anyone facing these worries to feel more comfortable and confident in their practice.

It's so fucked up how often politics are talked about completely separated from the victims of bad policy. Politicians who literally killed people, zero hyperbole, KILLED them, are talked about as "flawed candidates." We're taught from such a young age to view politics as an abstract academic study because on some level, the powerful know that if we looked at the real material impact of the political system, we'd burn it all down without thinking twice.

“The first Black Panther Party survival program was actually created in 1968, the breakfast program. And some people criticized the Black Panther survival programs saying they were reformist programs, and Bobby Seale, the co-founder of the Black Panther Party, said ‘these are not reform programs, they are actually revolutionary community programs. Revolutionary program is one step forward by revolutionaries, by those who want to change the system, to a better system. A reform program is set up by the existing exploitative system; a appeasing handout, to fool the people and keep them quiet.’ —That's what Bobby Seale said about the survival programs.”

not to be a poor millenial on main but like
I really don't know how to put into words how utterly defeated it feels to know in the back of mind that I'm about to be 30 soon and will likely never own a house. Something that was a drilled into Young Me as a marker of success and independence.
Not only that, but I can't work. I've tried. I'm relying Heavily on my partner. Honestly, with rent the way it is, we might struggle just to rent our own place, let alone buy one. And I have a daughter. Like... I'm really not gonna be able to do everything for her that I want to.
Disability is complicated and I was so neglected as a kid that I wasn't dxed with Anything in time to meet requirements. I'm still working on a couple of them in fact. My psych eval isn't til December and I made that appointment last April. That to say, it's going to be a Very long process. And my work history makes it worse. It's going to be an uphill battle and I'll likely need a lawyer. The thought of being denied kills me. Idk wtf I'm gonna do if I can't get disability. And the best part? you can't be married on disability. Sometimes they cancel you just for having a partner. The Trump admin even had ppl scouring Facebook's seeing if disabled ppl were "too happy".
Can y'all f e e l my rage? I rely on my partner because I don't have family to rely on. If I don't have her, I end up in the ground. Period. That's it. Those are my choices. File and hope to the damn heavens or... idek.
I thought the child tax credit Biden passed would help but all it did was move food stamps to cash (meaning it lowered my EBT a Lot, did it do that for everyone?). Which is absolute bullshit. How are you gonna tell me I need almost $300 Just For Food then take that away and give me $250 for everything including food and call that help??
Like I genuinely feel so stuck. And I know it's not just me. There are people I know Trapped in living situations because of how unaffordable it is to change their circumstances. A studio where I am goes for the same price as a two bedroom was last year. Two bedrooms apartments are now the price that a 3-4 bedroom houses were. My partners income isn't that much. That's so fucking beyond affordable.
What the fuck am I supposed to do??? What are any of us in this situation supposed to do? Like what happens to the queer, traumatized, disabled, BIPOC adults who've fallen through the cracks for our whole lives?
What happens when my amazingly patient gf decides that she's inevitably given all she could? Because she's functional but this kind of support takes a toll on you financially, emotionally, physically even. It isn't sustainable forever and as I said, right now I see no guaranteed way out of it.
Something has to fucking give.
But nothing is. Not rent. Not landlords. Not the precious Blue Man in office. Not the Blue governor I live under. Not the laws. Not the protests. Not disability regulations.
I'm ready to fucking burn something down. ANYTHING. at this point ANY empty building is option because at least I'd get their fucking attention. Maybe that's all it'd take too, you know? Maybe one person just has to do something absolutely fucking insane for everyone else to realize how fucked everything is. To be that catalyst. And every single day that passes I get closer to being that person.
What have I got to fucking lose that's not already on the fucking line anyway. Y'all are waiting for something and idk what. It's been 243 years and idk how many generations fighting the same fight, how fucking long are we waiting for change?
I'm ready for that revolution that y'all keep talking about, now. Ready for the FIND OUT part.

Collapse isn’t inevitable, it’s our duty to stop collapse if it indeed does happen. Damage control, unification, and solidarity with each other is how we get things done any other time. Why would it be any different during the climate crisis. We can’t rely upon hierarchical power structures to solve our problems for us, we have to seize them ourselves and begin damage prevention now. How you do that is up to you and those around you. Just a quick pep-talk as things are getting rather bleak everywhere.
Have a good one and stay safe babes.

can you talk more about using discord as a worship space? or just give tips and suggestions if youre not comfortable getting too into your personal practices?
yeah totally! i'm still in the process of doing some spring cleaning on that server, so everything is still a bit rusty ahahahah. this is probably gonna get pretty rambly since this whole idea is really customizable to your own tastes and spiritual needs!
i went back and bolded things for emphasis since this did get quite long.
i do journal for the gods and write them physical notes every so often, but since i am what u would call Obnoxiously Online all the time, i'm on discord a lot, and the little server icon is always right there in my peripheral vision, and when i've got a free moment i'll just write one of the gods a little message or two. the format of writing out messages rather than journaling kinda suits my thinking patterns better, especially compared to praying out loud where often times i just kinda.......lose track of what i'm trying to say and end up just being like "so........yeah." it helps me organize my thoughts a little better.
obviously YMMV on that part. people who prefer to pray out loud might not gel with that as much as i do. my brain just wanders........... a lot.......... and often times i tell myself i'm gonna talk to a god after a thing happens and then i just forget. so popping into the server a couple times a day reminds me about stuff like that when normally i would've just forgotten and not realized till hours or days later. it's not a replacement for my daily prayers or special rituals or anything, though now that i think of it it'd be a really good space to include preparations for festivals to certain gods................ see why i like writing things out so much like this? 😂
it's kinda like texting the gods. which is sorta weird (and weird to say out loud), but like, good weird. i've made a whole lot of channels, including for gods & heroes that i don't often interact with but want to get to know better, and it's nice to just drop in and say hi to them when i wouldn't normally interact with them much in my daily worship. it finally gave me the push i needed to start saying hi to mnemosyne! it's nice!
other than that, you can also use the channels to send pictures/aesthetics relating to them, store links to books or articles or posts about them (or things they'd have influence over), make notes to yourself about your relationship with them/stuff you're working through together (i do this with apollo a lot, and i plan on incorporating it into other gods' channels as well. i've been talking with a few of them about long-term stuff i need to be working on, and it's nice to leave reminders about them for my little goldfish brain ahahahah), and other things like that! you can pin messages that you want to repeatedly go back to, like prayers and playlists and pinterest boards.
someone also reblogged that post i made mentioning adding discord bots that can do divination for you if you're not able to use physical divination tools (or can't access them for a period of time) which i think is a fantastic idea that i'll probably implement soon! the divination bot i used to use has been down for maintenance for a few months, so i've just gotta find another one i like.
for people who can't be open about their practice irl, but use discord a lot, it really is super versatile. even though i don't personally use it for ritual or daily prayers, that doesn't mean that others can't. you're writing things out just as you would in a journal. if you're in other discord servers, it can be really innocuous (the icon and server name can even be something non-specific or even misleading, if you're worried about people snooping while you're away). with a little bit of time you can work it into your own full-fledged virtual altar if you'd like to.
that said i don't use it for everything. i have a digital grimore that i keep separate (on notion, again due to its versatility and how customizable it is) that i use to store ritual plans, research notes, and the like. but if you'd like to incorporate that into a server too, it's certainly possible! just not my personal style lol. plus, discord has a channel limit after all.
basically, it reminds me to keep up my relationships more often with the gods, just as i would with my friends, and it's tailored to the way my brain works and what works best in my own life. it's got me saying more than just good morning and good night with the odd little conversation in between--i can tell them about my day, talk to them more coherently about something that's been on my mind, or work something out with them easier. it's the little, daily, almost domestic things that seem small but, in the long run, develop a hell of a lot of kharis all the same.

Perhaps it's the headblindness, perhaps it's the religious trauma, but part of being pagan for me is accepting that the gods may very well not exist and recognizing the benefits of participating in religion regardless. That's why so much of my practice is focused on results in the "real world"--showing xenia, contributing toward my own arete, practicing hagneia in a way that affects my physical hygiene, pursuing knowledge and self-control and overall attempting to achieve Eudaimonia. Those are vital parts of my worship. I gain discipline and pleasure even if my belief in the gods is "misplaced."

Am I a good person? I really accurately reject that. I’m not interested in being good. I’m interested in being. I’m interested in being [with all my flaws], and that’s what actually allows me to connect with other people. Because the constant obsession with ‘being good’ is a separating factor for me, from other people.
Am I taking actions that are doing good things in the world? Am I actualizing those values that I have that are deeply held values, that I’m constantly struggling to put into action and to inhabit? That’s much more interesting to me.

hiii i have a question, can radfems be fans of models/fashion?
Sure. The bare minimum is being critical of the systems you engage in and the media you consume. Like, for example, acknowledging how modeling is often objectifying and how women’s fashion is deliberately tailored to be restrictive and uncomfortable. Your choices, interests, and preferences don’t have to completely revolve around your political ideology.
