If I can ask for prayer, I'm having a difficult time with my brother who, because of his own religious trauma, is hurt and angry with me for still being Christian when he's chosen not to be. He feels very alone because he has no one in his life who shares his perspective, but he doesn't seem to have room for the nuance of the fact that there are different ways to be Christian, different world views and traditions and ways of being part of them. He's constantly unfairly putting himself down for 'being stupid', but in this instance he actually is just badly educated on the topic and because of the trauma he resists learning from sources that aren't anti-religion. I don't feel attacked or pressured necessarily but there's only so much support I can offer him in this area when he's expecting me to change "for my own good" or to make him feel less alone, and can't accept my nuanced response.
Hey there, anon. Ach, I feel for both you and your brother, and I'll be praying for both of you. It sounds like you respect his decision not to be religious anymore and that's great; I hope that he can come to respect your own choice to keep religion a part of your life.
May your brother's pain ease with time; may people come into his life who can relate to his experience and help him discover new sources of nourishment. And may God enfold you in patience and comfort to shield you against any hurtful things your brother may say in the meantime.

ramadan mubarak to all those who are observing. may this holy month soothe all of the aches lingering in your heart, wash away whatever burdens that may be weighing you down, reward you for all of the sacrifices that you have had to make in order to survive, shine light through whatever darkness that has made you doubt your place in this world, and grant you the inner peace, genuine happiness, and relief that you have been praying so patiently for.

with twitter’s situation being what it is I’m a bit uncertain about what the future holds for my account there (which had about 28k followers that I painstakingly gathered over the course of many many years. that’s a lot of audience to potentially lose for someone who relies entirely on their socials for their job).
so here’s a bit of self promo 😭 I’m Marty, an italian lesbian living in the UK. You might’ve seen some of my stuff around. I make gay comics, TTRPG illos, and more often than not I’m available for commissions (not now but soon enough I’ll have to reopen again 💝)

I’ve been too busy with work but I want to go back to posting more when I can!! If you’ve ever enjoyed anything I make, it would mean the world to me if you could boost this.
Thank you so much for your support over the years and let’s keep going!! 💜

Queer-Affirming Worship Resource: Daily Ripple
"Our goal is to build a framework for discipleship for the 21st Century. With more people leaving traditional churches, we hope to fill in a gap for people who are still looking for faith formation opportunities."
If you want to incorporate queer-affirming, justice-oriented snippets of biblical reflection into your everyday life, Daily Ripple is a great option. Every weekday, subscribers receive a short reflection, ending with a question meant to guide you towards action. (It's free btw!)
If you're curious, here are a few of the recent daily posts that most resonated with me:
Lament as a skill, a gift
Considering neopronouns in light of Jesus's statement that "The Sabbath was made for people, not people for the Sabbath"
"How does your image of God reflect the image you experience in a mirror?"
I'm excited to be joining Daily Ripple's creative team, starting this week! So y'know, if you're into the stuff I write here — or are looking for ways to bring more intentionality into Lent — now's a great time to check it out :D

my wife brought up a brilliant point this morning: a huge problem with the way we view psychology (a problem which is frequently exploited + used to justify a lot of just. shitty work) is that it lives in a no-man's land between "social sciences" + "natural sciences" in the collective imagination.
consider: one of the first works which spurned my interest in psychiatric abolition was durkheim's work on suicide. as a sociologist ("social scientist"), he uses pretty rigorous quantitative methods to show that suicide is much less correlated with levels of depression than it is with cultural factors (like religion, country of origin, marriage rates). however, people do not respond to the medicalization of suicide by saying "well, durkheim proved that suicide isn't a mental illness symptom, so this is unscientific"- this is obviously a drastic oversimplification of his work + it's commonly understood that sociology does not "prove" immutable social truths.
similarly, i would not comment on a study which identifies changes in t-cells over time among hiv+ patients by arguing that it didn't deeply explore the social environments or past traumas they had experienced, (even though those could have an impact on t-cell count), because i understand that is not the purpose of the research + ultimately they had to choose to control for these factors without centering them in order to obtain important medical information. "this information is meaningless because it doesn't include each patient's trauma history" would be an absurd critique.
among the general population + many self-assured researchers, psychology gets both the privilege of being a "social science" (so we can't expect it to be TOO exact; it's complicated; it's not really saying that's ALWAYS true; if it proves inaccurate that's because culture/social factors must have muddied it up; we can't really expect PROOF for most of it) as well as a "natural science" (you can't question its basic presumptions or you're a science denier; the dsm describes real things which existed even before it was written; it obviously is rooted in biology even if we haven't discovered how yet; reducing its measures to quantitative evaluation is fine + unproblematic).
my point here isn't to argue that psychology is a "social" or "natural" science, but rather that we need to rethink what work those categories actually do + whether the distinction between them is as strict or meaningful as we believe it to be. our strict dichotomies between "objectively proven truths" + "social observations which are ultimately just informed opinions" are exposed when we look at a field which seems to be uncomfortably situated within both. what kind of work might become possible if we abandoned this dichotomy, rather than bickering over whose work belongs in which club?

A Kemetic prayer to Bast for Jellie
Tumblr media
Hail to You, O' Bast, Who guards the Two Lands! Hail to You, Iryt Ra! You who are swift and cunning, You who strike down enemies and nurture children. I ask that You protect and nurture the cat Jellie as she crosses into Your domain, through the Duat and into Your Hour. I ask that she is kept from harm and given safety and shelter in the cradle of Your arms. Hail to You, O' Bast, Devouring Lady, Mother of my Soul! I offer sweet cheese and fruits. I offer spiced tea and toasted nuts. I offer the ring of my sistrum. May Jellie only know warmth and good food with You, the comfort of the sun. May she hunt on under Your guidance. May she find peace and joy within Your company. Hail to You, O' Bast, Lady of the Ointments, the Knowledge through which death cannot approach too closely! I light this candle and ask that all those who have called this cat family find comfort and peace in this time of her absence. I ask that Your Light guides her to You, and that she remains safely within Your domain. May her name be forever remembered. May her ba be forever nourished through the shrines and images made in her honor. Thus it is done. Dua Bast!
this is free to reblog if you so choose, and i hope whoever reads it can find even a small measure of comfort in it❤️❤️❤️❤️🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂
