All in the Family: ACOTAR PART II
Welcome back to our multi-part lesson on ACOTAR and Family Systems! Today’s topic is family roles, the interplay between them, and their combination’s influence on the nuclear family emotional process in the Inner Circle.
Pre-requisites: Part I
Creds: license and mf master's degree in counseling babyyy. and unhinged enough to write it all down.
No content warnings, just garden variety family dysfunction.
Tumblr media
oh my god what the fuck does that mean
Let's back up and start with the structure of the IC pre-Archeron invasion. We have Rhysand, Cassian, Azriel, Morrigan, and Amren in a found family. This is where we have to suspend our disbelief a bit, because you’ll notice there are no parents in this family. However that doesn’t mean no one functions as a parent, because in any system there is a hierarchy, at least in an emotional sense, and the power vacuum will always get filled.
When a parent is missing from a nuclear family, very often one of the children will step in to fill the role and rebalance the system. Older siblings caring for younger ones, female children picking up housework, even phrases like calling someone the “man of the house” confer symbolic authority and responsibility to someone theoretically on the same level as the others. The dark end of this road is emotional incest, when parents rely on a child emotionally in the same way they would a spouse, a dynamic that is deeply inappropriate and incredibly damaging for a child.
Okay, so let’s talk about sibling position to see who is most likely to step up. This is a found family, so obviously none of these are based in biology, but if we look at the core four, they have a pretty clear birth order layout in terms of both power and personality.
Rhys: A textbook oldest child - responsibility-seeking, serious, tending toward leadership roles. Oldest children often feel the burden of setting a good example for others. Prone to relieving anxiety via control.
Az and Cas: Classic ends of the middle child spectrum (invisible to hyper-visible). Middle children are flexible, adaptable, and competitive, and often struggle with questions identity. They may seek to meet needs for connection and validation in unhealthy ways.
Mor: Baby of the family energy through and through. Youngest children are more likely to be outgoing, creative, and rebellious, and struggle with inferiority and self-centeredness. Interestingly, they’re also more likely to abuse alcohol and are overrepresented in psychiatric populations.
Amren, hilariously, comes across as an only child - they tend to be wise, independent, and private, struggling with social skills and receiving criticism. (1)
So who’s filling our parental roles here in the IC? Who has power over the others? Rhysand is an obvious choice - he regularly makes decisions for the group as well as individual members on the basis of his feelings and his political position. I think you could even argue Rhys sees the people of Velaris as his children, too, though he definitely plays favorites lol. Amren also emerges as a person with power, given everyone is afraid of her and she has influence over Rhys. Amren has some authority over the others, though she is less invested in their personal lives and so functions differently in the system than Daddy Rhys.
So Rhys is one parent, and Amren is like a weird aunt. It’s very normal in systems with a parentified child (PC) that the other children feel resentful - they’re all supposed to be on the same level, and yet one of them has been exalted above the rest. The PC can respond to this so many ways - force, charm, control, bribes, threats, ignoring them - it’ll depend on the person and the individual system. But the PC will also feel that counter-resentment and leverage the power position to create balance in the family (Cassian, Azriel, stop trying to kiss your sisters). The irony is that, in this system, no one asked Rhys to be in power over his friends - he decided he wanted them in his court and blurred those lines himself. I suspect this was intentional, though likely unconscious, because it gives him a nuclear option if he ever needs to reestablish order and control in his family. We see him pull rank in tense personal moments that have literally nothing to do with politics despite his excuse they do.
(I do think, though, that there’s an argument to be made here that, for people in certain positions of prominence and influence, all your choices are political. Your image is part of your power and so, by extension, the parts of your personal life that become public have an effect on your ability to rule. Rhys and Feyre use this rationale with Nesta in ACOSF, though my babe isn’t exactly a Hunter Biden. More of a Claudia Conway, I’d say.)
Let's go back to our scary image from the beginning.
Bowen believed in the importance of visualizing this structure, so he advocates for family mapping or construction of a genogram (2). Given what we’ve unpacked so far, we can roughly plot the individual connections and hierachy. I’ve created this one to show the basics of the relationships and power structure in the IC, and we’ll get more specific from here.
Solid lines=connectedness
Dashed lines=conflict
Arrow=direction of energy
Squiggles=ambivalence/fluctuation
Line thickness=emotional closeness
Amren’s special line to Rhys=whatever ulterior motive she has
Tumblr media
If you remember from my last post, one of the most important forces in a family is the triangle. Take another look at the triangles above, and see which ones seem unstable to you. The one that immediately stands out to me, even just visually, is the Cas/Az/Mor triangle. Each individual relationship has a different tenor, which creates a lot of instability. You can see how Mor needs that closeness with Cas to balance the tension with Az, but in order to keep their relationship stable, Cas and Az have Rhys as a moderating presence. Because what is the one thing they all have in common? A close relationship with Rhys. And Rhys has Amren to reinforce his power and responsibility, keeping the whole system in balance.
In this way, the IC’s system, while dysfunctional, is relatively stable pre-Archerons.
To understand how that’s possible, we have to talk about anxiety. Anxiety is the main energy that moves conflict through the family and sets off the nuclear family emotional process (NFEP). Anxiety must go somewhere. In enmeshed systems like this one (members’ emotions and security are highly dependent on one another), members relieve their anxiety through the system instead of resolving it individually or in dyads. In cut off, emotionally distant systems, anxiety gets internalized or displaced outside the family.
Given the sheer variety of relationships in the system, the most likely source of anxiety is Morrigan. She has a different relationship to every person in the system. She’s in the middle of the power hierarchy between the “parents” and the “kids”, and floats around inside the relatively stable triangle of the bat boys, with individual connections to each one . She also has a pattern of internal conflict that she moderates externally via alcohol and relationships. Despite not having the most power externally, Mor’s actions and reactions often cause the rest of the system to shuffle around her, giving her a great deal of power.
But don’t just take my word for it - let’s look at this in action.
Say Mor, Cas, and Az go out together bc apparently that is something they do regularly. Mor feels Azriel getting too close, which triggers her anxiety because she does not want to talk about whatever is between them. In response, she communicates her displeasure by leveraging the triangle and focusing her intimate attention on Cassian. But this creates conflict for Cassian, who wants to moderate Mor’s anxiety without rupturing his relationship with Azriel. Hence, we get the weird overfamiliar platonic besties routine, threading the needling of giving Mor the protection she’s asking for without out-and-out antagonizing his brother. Azriel buries his hurt feelings and retracts emotionally, despite wanting to be connected, and they go back to how they were.
So we can see how Mor has generated the anxiety, and it follows down the chain: she passes it off to the boys, who deal with it through emotional cutoff (Az) and enmeshment (Cas). Cassian steps in between the conflict at Mor’s unconscious request and takes inappropriate responsibility for Azriel’s feelings of rejection and Mor’s anxiety, while Az puts his feelings away and reestablishes emotional distance. This is the NFEP in action.
And yet Cassian and Azriel are still shown to be close, so where do these feelings go? I mean, they do physically fight each other all the time lol. Azriel banks a lot of repressed resentment he has to discharge elsewhere. Cassian feels the burden of peacemaking and internalizes the unresolved conflict as his own fault, doubling down on his commitment to making it better. Mor avoids contending with her own feelings because everyone else is doing it for her.
And here’s where Rhys becomes a moderating presence for all of them. Rhys has ultimate decision-making power over who is in and who’s out of the family, and sets the rules of engagement. He decides who gets respect, who’s allowed to initiate conflict. Rhys hold’s the power in the bat boys triangle, the strongest alliance in the system, incentivizing Cas and Az to get along with each other. He also incentivizes Mor/Cas/Az to keep their shit together because Amren has influence over him, and they need their alliance to leverage power against her. Rhys doesn’t have a problem with the buffer, so they rest of them “don’t” either.
The best question to ask when it comes to dysfunction is this: who benefits? We can see this in larger systems, too: who benefits for housing disparity, patriarchy, systemic racism, ableism, homophobia and transphobia? People in power. If a system is balanced via dysfunction, it’s because whoever is in power wants it that way. With families, this is often more unconscious - perhaps Rhys is just as afraid of family disintegration as Mor, and believes addressing their issues will cause them to split. Perhaps there is a more generational pattern at play. I think it’s worth considering not just how this family functions, but what conscious and unconscious choices are being made given their individual families of origin.
And then the Archeron’s come, and all these cracks will be exposed and the system will get blown to shit. See you next time, class dismissed!

Note
Just to make it clear for anyone reading this, although bookish made it perfectly clear already: arc and plot are not the same.
A character in a fantasy novel and a character in a contemporary novel can have the same arcs. ex. Both need to overcome (or at the very least learn how to healthily manage) their anxiety.
But their plots are going to be vastly different. The fantasy character would need to take their rightful place as ruler to defeat the bad guy and free their people while the contemporary character searches for their birth mother.
So yeah, Feyre’s romantic arc in ACOTAR2 was with Tamlin. Which means the trauma from UTM really affected their relationship to the point where it needed to be built up again. Throw in that she intended for a love triangle with villain!Rhys and the fact that the series was supposed to be A Tam Lane/Beauty and the Beast retelling all the way through, the arc stays the same, but the triangle ends with Feyre picking Tamlin. This only works if the plot she originally thought of stayed the same. It didn’t. She changed the plot to make it easier to change the endgame.
She did this with TOG. She admitted it. She literally said verbatim she kept trying to find a way to change the endgame, but it wasn’t working with the original story so she had to change the plot in order to do it. And if you read everything pre-Queen of Shadows (the first three books, the novellas, the short stories she released), the plot hinges on Dorian and Aelin together. In power, both politically and magically, which obviously leads to their romance (which started in the first book and was slowly developing from then). All the threads are there. Until she had to change the story to change the endgame. So then QOS, much like ACOMAF, and then EOS completely reset almost everything before it.
Hi anon! I'm not sure if you're the same anon who mentioned Sarah saying she added Rhys in or not but either way: welcome!
Yes, thank you. Arc=/= plot.
Again while I do have receipts for the changes in Throne of Glass, I am merely speculating that this means the original ACOTAR endgame was Feylin. And from what little we have, that makes sense: as I said in my other post, NestaxLucien was the original ship, not Nessian. Given Sarah has said Nessian was not a thing until she wrote the scene at the dinner table, this suggests that A) Cassian and Nesta meeting was not a part of the original plot of ACOTAR 2, indicating that ACOTAR 2 wasn't originally as heavily involved with the Night Court or the Inner Circle as ACOMAF was B) more of the plot was concentrated in the Spring Court, with enough of the plot occurring in the Spring Court for at least one Archeron sister to fall in love with a member of that court (Lucien).
But yes, the knowledge that Sarah changed the plot of ACOTAR 2 and wrote ACOMAF instead, along with the bits and pieces we know of ACOTAR 2 (such as Nesta and Lucien being endgame) do point towards it being more likely that Feyre was predominantly in the Spring Court in the original trilogy. If the romantic arc stayed the same, but Feyre spent more of her time in the Spring Court, then putting two and two together it seems more likely that her romantic arc was with Tamlin.

The Blueprint of ACOTAR books is right here
I am not sure why this is not clear, BUT...
Rhysand’s entire speech pre-battle in ACOWAR is the blueprint for the rest of the series.
Here is how it went:
“I believe everything happens for a reason. Whether it is decided by the Mother, or the Cauldron, or some sort of tapestry of Fate, I don't know. I don't really care. But I am grateful for it, whatever it is. Grateful that it brought you all into my life. If it hadn't... I might have become as awful as that prick we're going to face today. If I had not met an Illyrian warrior-in-training," he said to Cassian, "I would not have known the true depths of strength, of resilience, of honor and loyalty." Cassian's eyes gleamed bright. Rhys said to Azriel, "If I had not met a shadowsinger, I would not have known that it is the family you make, not the one you are born into, that matters. I would not have known what it is to truly hope, even when the world tells you to despair." Azriel bowed his head in thanks. Mor was already crying when Rhys spoke to her. "If I had not met my cousin, I would never have learned that light can be found in even the darkest of hells. That kindness can thrive even amongst cruelty." She wiped away her teas as she nodded. I waited for Amren to offer a retort. But she was only waiting. Rhys bowed his head to her. "If I had not met a tiny monster who hoards jewels more fiercely than a firedrake..." A quite laugh from all of us at that. Rhys smiled softly. "My own power would have consumed me long ago." Rhys squeezed my hand as he looked to me at last. "And if I had not met my mate..." His words failed him as silver lined his eyes. He said down the bond, I would have waited five hundred more years for you. A thousand years. And if this was all the time we were allowed to have... The wait was worth it. He wiped away the tears sliding down my face. "I believe that everything happened, exactly the way it had to... so I could find you." He kissed another tear away.
And then he said to my sisters, “We have not known each other for long. But I have to believe that you were brought there, into our family, for a reason, too. And maybe today, we’ll find out why.”
He goes point by point, with every person and basically explains what and when to expect:
He starts off with Cassian, his first and closest friend. This is what his book was going to be about:  "I would not have known the true depths of strength, of resilience, of honor and loyalty.”
His book was first, and that’s exactly what it was about--strength and resilience with Nesta, persistence and loyalty to her.
He then goes to Azriel:  f I had not met a shadowsinger, I would not have known that it is the family you make, not the one you are born into, that matters. I would not have known what it is to truly hope, even when the world tells you to despair.
What will we find out? What a shadowsinger is, how he came about becoming one and what it means. Next, the concept of family--Azriel’s very mysterious family, his lineage and from whence he hails. At this point, I think it’s safe to assume there is a connection to Dusk Court. Azriel hopes for love, for choice, for his own family, since it’s been denied to him.
Next is Mor: Most likely her book/novella will be following.  ‘ If I had not met my cousin, I would never have learned that light can be found in even the darkest of hells. That kindness can thrive even amongst cruelty.’
Interesting that Hel is mentioned. Mor, the ‘queen’ of an underworld kingdom. Hewn City (cut-off city) is under ground, and closest to Hel. What was it cut off from? The Night Court? Or, perhaps, from Hel? Let’s not forget the Darkbringers--an elite fighting force that bears loyalty only to Kier and the Stewards of HC. Not NC. Why? Will Mor, in fact, play a significant role with whatever powers she has, whatever her lineage is, in perhaps being a liaison between Hel and the NC?
Finally Amren: the most recent addition to his Inner Circle.
If I had not met a tiny monster who hoards jewels more fiercely than a firedrake..." A quite laugh from all of us at that. Rhys smiled softly. "My own power would have consumed me long ago."
Curious, how Amren has said repeatedly that nothing is by chance and that perhaps Rhys should become High King (it doesn’t matter how you feel about this). Yet, at the same time, she possesses the ability to mitigate his power and helps him control it. With Gwydion, Truth-Teller, and all the talk about High Kings and intergalactic angels and demons, is this not a tale for Amren? Is this why she was brought back?
Lastly:
About the sisters: And then he said to my sisters, “We have not known each other for long. But I have to believe that you were brought there, into our family, for a reason, too. And maybe today, we’ll find out why.”
He states that they are now part of his family. The 3 blood sisters, who became members of his found family. And he believes that they were brought into Prythian for a reason--to change Prythian’s destiny. And to be part of HIS FAMILY. He is the connector, as well as Feyre--she connects the Archerons and humans to the Fae. He connects the Fae and his brothers to the Archerons and the humans.
He does not mention anyone else. There is no Lucien, no Varian, no Tamlin, or anyone else. Only the Inner Circle and the Archerons. That’s what ACOTAR is about.
And chances are--the series will end with Rhys and Feyre again, just as he ends his speech with professing his love for his mate.

Final thoughts on ACOWAR + the trilogy as a whole
I am done. I am never, EVER touching a single book by SJM again. I dipped my toes into ToG and decided that it was not for me and, with the rest of the series looming overhead, also decided that it wasn't even worth reading ironically. I gave ACOTAR a try and thought "Hey, it's only a trilogy. How bad can it be?" It was very bad. ACOTAR was mostly boring and unremarkable, with the most egregious problem being the beginning of SJM's systematic butchering of fae mythology and turning them into omegaverse alphas - just without the knots. ACOMAF was HORRID and the 3 days it took me to read felt like half an eternity and I had a headache for the entire time. ACOWAR is marginally better than ACOMAF, instead of horrid it's just bad and occasionally infuriating. I learned from ACOMAF and spaced out my reading time, so I only got a headache on the third day of reading it and then decided to take a 5 day break. The first section of the book was just me rolling my eyes until they fell out of my skull. Tamlin in this first section is a prime example of what I like to call a hatesink. We are meant to hate him and nothing else. I didn't even really give a shit about him being a shitty person bc it didn't matter! Feyre hates him and we are supposed to hate him, regardless of what he does. He could have been kicking puppies and knitting sweaters for orphans in consecutive scenes and Feyre would literally have the same internal narration about how much she hates him and how she can't wait to make him miserable. I was over it after 2 paragraphs, I didn't feel anything, no satisfaction, no nothing. Finally leaving the Spring Court was a relief but it was short-lived when we returned to Velaris with Lucien. GOOD GOD, is the Inner Circle as infuriating pile of people. I needed someone to throw hands. Either the Inner Circle with each other and someone on the outside with one of them, preferably Rhysand. Can someone knock a couple of Rhysand's teeth out? PLEASE?? I get why Lucien didn't do it. If he so much as smacked someone from the IC over the head, I 100% believe Rhysand would throw a huge temper tantrum like the toddler he is, and pulverize him but someone else could have... Mor should have AT LEAST attempted to slap him for the shit he pulled with Keir and Eris. Nesta's hands could've been rated E for everyone at, like, any point in the book. Maybe I just want to see Rhysand get socked in the face... Pre-war the threat of Hybern fell kind of... flat after two pairs of Importantly Titled people from Hybern, one pair of which boasts about how they have a thousand years of experience on Feyre, almost immidiately get offed by either our protagonists or whatever much more interesting eldritch horror lives in their basement. What a threat, I was at the edge of my seat, worried the King of Hybern will send over some more schmucks to get axed. It doesn't help that they have less character depth than a Powerpuff Girls villain... SJM seems to have some sort of allergy to having Feyre acknowledge her mistakes. On two seperate occasions, she was just starting to recognize an action she took might have been a mistake because of the consequences it had, then Rhysand swooped in to make sure she won't. She directly paved the way for Hybern to attack the Summer Court and lay siege to Adriata, killing hundreds of innocent people, by bringing down the Spring Court. The fucking King of Hybern himself verbally thanks her for it! She made a mistake, fueled by her desire for revenge but the narrative, through Rhysand, REFUSES to acknowledge it as a mistake. The protagonists are Always Right even when they're not. Her violent outburst at the meeting of the High Lords was the same story. The meeting in itself was the singular most frustrating thing I have ever read. Not one, not two but three times did someone from the Night Court have a violent outburst because of things someone said and they were the ones who called the meeting. I know the book tried to convince us Tamlin was the one with a short temper but holy shit, none of IC are any better?? You people are flying off the handle left and right? Say what you will, but at least Tamlin kept his jabs verbally this time. Reading about the meeting was like watching a bunch of magically superpowered toddlers. How have some of these Courts managed to stay functioning with these people as their leaders? None of them read like decades or even centuries old people... At least I now have a better understanding of the mentality of backseat gamers... The sex scenes were placed at some of the weirdest parts. Like the one time Rhysand and Feyre had a quickie just after she got back from her exhausting multi-day treck from the Spring Court while Lucien was waiting in the entrance hall of the house in his dirty, tattered clothes... And of course, who could forget the blowjob to the live surround-sound of people's death throes. Seems like a bit of a mood killer, I don't know if I could get hard in that situation. The battle scenes in and of itself, especially when the actual big-scale war started? Holy shit these scenes were BORING. I really don't know how SJM managed to make an all-out war between two factions of ludicrously powerful magical beings boring but she managed it. Utterly tensionless drivel. At no point was I ever under the impression that any of the main characters or sympathetic secondary characters would die or get permanently injured in some way. And the deaths we did have... didn't elicit much of a reaction beyond a shrug. Feyre's dad was barely in the first book, completely written out of the second and then appears at the end of the third just to be murdered in front of our protagonist and her sisters and I'm supposed to care? The Bone Carver and the Weaver are paper-thin "ooohh so scary" ancient eldritch beings who both bite it pretty unceremoniously and, again, I'm supposed to care? Literally didn't even react to the death of the King of Hybern beyond a shrug. I also find it funny how so many, arguably important characters just... remain nameless. The main antagonist, the Big Bad? He's just "the King of Hybern". Lucien's mother, the Lady of the Autumn Court, who saved the protagonist's life in book one? She doesn't have a name either! The father of our protagonist? You guessed it, nameless! Rhysand's mother and sister, whose deaths were the catalyst for his and Tamlin's feud? Fuck them, I guess. But you can fucking bet your ass Feyre's two maids in Velaris, who have literally zero personality or plot importance, have names. One of them is named after fucking Cerridwen. Closing thought, can we talk about how SJM gave the singular most bombass aesthetic, night sky and stars, to Rhysand - the literal most dripless person in the history of fiction. It's always just tunics or jackets with no description beyond being black. Even Rhysand's fucking wedding ring (or equivalent there of) is just a silver band. The most he ever did with accessories was wear a crown of raven feathers. Rhysand is the equivalent of that picture of Ed Sheeran in a t-shirt next to a glammed-up Beyonce. He is the male actor showing up the MET gala in a simple black suit, regardless of theme. No drip, no style, no fashion, just boring.

Hiii, Idk if you take requests..I have a very specific fic idea but Im not much of a writer so I was wondering if youd write it! Here it goes:
Could you maybe do a one-shot about baby nyx(think ab 1-2 yr old) not being able to control his magic and accidentally sending him & feyre back in time to velaris when rhys was trapped under the mountain, but pre beginning of acotar? So the inner circle meet them and learn who they are, after a while nyx wants his dad so (still in the past) they get teleported to rhys(amarantha is maybe away idk you can play that however you want) so they give rhys hope, eventually Nyx's magic fades and they return to the present, maybe the people in the past dont remember clearly what happened?
Hi! yes, I do take requests! and thank you so much, this is fabulous
I’m just going to say right now that this will take me a while, because of planning stuff out and all that and because I go back to college in three weeks (ahhh!!) but I’d love to write it! So be on the lookout :)

in being somewhat new to the acotar fandom, I just want to say, yeah I don't think you're meant to like nesta until acosf, maybe not even then. everything that we see pre acosf is from feyre and rhys' pov, so of course we don't have any idea wtf nesta is thinking, what her reasoning is etc.
nesta is morally grey, complex, layered and I think that makes her so so interesting. and I'm just gonna put it out there, that if nesta were a male, everyone would like that character hell of a lot more and give them a lot more leeway.
hell, my feelings for nesta were so up and down and going into acosf I didn't know what to think of her. but her chapters were so intense .. so broken and sad to start, but then so moving and wonderful, I couldn't help but love her.
I love that when she went into the cauldron, she took too much from it. I like that it messed her up and led her on this huge journey of discovering who she is. I love that she found emerie and gwyn. I love that she defended them, to the end in the blood rite. it was all so suspenseful that I felt like I was on the edge of my seat whilst reading each page.
yes I will not deny that her relationship with her sisters is complex, but it always has been. families are difficult, especially considering what they have all been through. but I can't see how people will read the entirety of acosf and not understand her character. yeah people don't have to like her, but as with any character with intense trauma, there is more than meets the eye.
and with the Valkyries - nesta needed her own people. she felt alone and betrayed by elain staying with feyre. without gwyn and emerie, nesta wouldn't be the same at the end of acosf. no one is saying that the valkyries are replacing the inner circle - people are allowed to have friends outside of their family. and tbh, feyre and elain should both have friends outside of the ic.
gwyn is not replacing elain, and emerie with feyre. it's redundant to think so. they all exist outside of each other.

Hi! Thanks for sending this in, and for the record I am always open to asks and prompts😊 sometimes life gets in the way, but I do my best to answer them!
When it comes to fic, I only write AUs. Personally I just love putting our characters into modern or new worlds. Because of that, I don’t think I can do this request justice. I’m sorry.
But if any other fic writers want to take this prompt for a spin, i wish you the best!

Someday, Nyx
well i guess beacuse i like to emotionally abuse myself i wrote this lil fic. i got the idea for it from a post i saw about baby nyx being named after rhys' little sister.
sorry for any typos and errors.
Fandom: A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas
Warnings: None
Word Count: 1660
Rhysand stared out into the open field before him as he bounced the restless babe in his arms. He supposed he was too. In the weeks leading up to this, he had tried desperately to postpone this day. Scheduling fruitless visits to Illyrian training camps and even the Gods-forsaken Hewn City, just to delay the inevitable. By reflex, Rhysand hid his increasing nerves under a mask of cool indifference but judging by the knowing smirks his brothers’ and Mor were sporting, he was failing spectacularly at that. Unsurprisingly, it was Cassian who decided he couldn’t wait any longer.
“Okay, that’s it. Hand Nyx over, Rhys.” Cassian stepped forwards and held out his arms awaiting.
Instinctively, Rhys’ hold on the child only tightened, and a soft snarl emerged from his throat, “back off, Cass.”
“Mother’s tits Rhys! We haven’t got all day.” He exasperated.
“Cassian,” Mor’s sharp interjection was softened by the ghost of a smile.
“Sorry,” Cassian had the decency to look ashamed, before sending the babe a saccharine smile, “I meant Mother’s hips.” He looked to Rhys’ expectantly again.
“You know, the winds today are stronger than I anticipated. Maybe we should do this tomorrow.” Pathetic. It was a pathetic excuse, and he knew it. But every time he thought about the little thing he held in his arms, flying clumsily, and exposed through the sky, he only further cemented his feet into the ground. The babe only grew more restless.
“Scared by a tiny, little breeze, High Lordling? See look, even Nyx is getting tired of your sh-stuff.” He coughed, before adding, softer this time, “it’s time, brother.”
Rhys just spat back, with more venom than he intended, “come any closer, you bastard, and I’ll rip your arms from their sockets.”
Cassian’s powerful wings rustled behind him, and Mor and Azriel tensed, cautious shadows gathering in near their feet. But to Rhys’ surprise, Cassian didn’t take the bait. He continued to stare unflinching at the agitated male, hazel eyes blazing, “Nyx is my sister too Rhys. Do you think I’d ever let anything happen to her?”
Rhys was startled. It was only because he remained dumbfounded by Cassian’s sudden seriousness, that he allowed his little sister to be lifted from his arms.
“Hello, Starlight.” His brother cooed, “are you ready to fly, darling?”
Nyx, the traitorous little thing, only gushed and prattled on delightfully in the way she always did when she was in Cassian’s arms. If it were any other situation, Rhys’ brotherly instincts would go into overdrive and he’d protest at the sight. But, for a moment, he could see it. He could see the way in which Cassian and Azriel and Mor watched over her, the steadiness in their gazes and the sureness of their movements. Yes, here, surrounded by her family, there was nowhere else in the world, that Nyx would be safer. Rhys' aggression instantly dissolved into guilt.
“I’m sorry, Cass.” He was. Truly. Without taking his eyes off the babe, his brother just nodded in understanding. Azriel stepped up to them this time and poked a scarred finger into her pudgy cheek.
“Can you show me how you move your wings, little one?” He asked the babe with a soft smile, flaring out his own wings as a demonstration. Even Rhys couldn’t help stop the smile that was forming on his face. A month ago, it was one of those rare nights that they were all together at the town house in Velaris, when war and politics were the furthest things from their minds. The three brothers began Nyx’s flying lessons by demonstrating the correct wing movement. The babe sat on the carpeted floor; head tipped back to look at the three imposing Illyrians towering over her.
“It’s like this, Starlight.” Rhys had demonstrated first, of course. With his back to her, he flared in and out, his large, membranous wings. His little sister, not intimidated in the least, simple marvelled at her older brother, her little wings motionless at her back.
“No, you prick,” Cassian had interrupted, pushing Rhys aside, “You have to do it like this!”. The second male went through his motions, but Nyx only laughed in glee and babbled incoherently, no doubt her encouragements for more.
“You’re doing the same Gods-damned thing I was doing, you brute!” Rhys had scowled, elbowing his way back into the baby’s line of attention.
“Both of you are idiots. Move.” Azriel had gone into the centre fold then. Cutting off the other two's muffled protests with his trademark cool demeanour. Not ten minutes later, Mor came bursting into the room. And when she took in the scene before her: the Prince of Darkness, the Lord of Bloodshed, and the Sypmaster, three terrible and awesome warriors she fought and killed beside, bickering and ruffling their wings like mad males, she had laughed herself hoarse. And soon, all four of them followed. Completely unaware, but utterly mesmerised by the sight of her family’s joy, baby Nyx’s happiness seemed to bleed into the rest of her body, and she fluttered those beautiful little wings at her back.
She was a quick study, but that was no surprise to anyone. When Rhys’ mother was still in the early weeks of her pregnancy, they were all shocked when their healer, Madja, told them the unborn child had wings. Shocked, because not even Rhysand, born with immense power that cautioned all the other High Lords, was born with wings. They knew then, that Nyx, still inside her mother’s belly, would be flying sooner that any normal Illyrian child. It still didn’t give him much comfort, however, the fact that they had been anticipating this day for an age before she was even born. To distract himself, Rhys, once again cast his gaze to his surroundings.
The day was so unlike the one just over a year ago. Rhysand’s mother was making preparation to go back to Velaris. Where she would spend the remaining month of her pregnancy, when the storm came in, vicious and unrelenting. The winds howled their protests, demanding to keep her in her cabin in the Illyrian mountains for the birth. And the very earth shook, like Ramiel Himself knew. Knew the way the Illyrians; lords, soldiers, and females alike, stopped to stare whenever they were near. Not to sneer at his mother’s untamed wings, but the life inside of her. Like the babe not yet born, was seasoned general, commanding everyone’s attention with her mere presence. Rhysand and his family knew it then, that like he, his little sister possessed power that none of them could possibly fathom. But in the way that he triumphed over night, perhaps she would command the sky itself.
And when labour came that very night, swift and far too many weeks early, they had no choice but to stay. His mother, Rhysand, Cassian, Azriel, Madja and her assistant. The High Lord’s son, had faced countless battles, had once been nailed to the ground by his wings, and forced to watch as his own soldiers were tortured. But never, had he felt such helplessness as he heard his mother’s cries of pain. Never, he had felt such fear as his mother bled and begged him to save his sister’s life no matter what. And when the child’s first wails pierced through the air, his mother still very much alive and crying from joy, all at once, the storm settled. Like Ramiel had let out a breath of relief, for the birth of their Illyrian princess.
So much had changed in the year that his little sister came into this world. In those first few weeks, when Rhys could barely keep himself away from her. When baby Nyx, still unaware of most things around her, kept absentmindedly reaching out a delicate, little hand towards him. For the first time in his centuries-old existence, he felt like he finally had something was truly his. His little sister. This innocent, pure little thing. Of all the horror he had seen and was for responsible for in his years, that he could be given such a precious gift, astounded him. Even his sanctimonious prick of a father, changed considerably. Rhys was never sure about his father’s feelings towards his son, and even though he was more than capable, he was too afraid to use his daemati gifts to look into his mind and find out. Not because Rhys was afraid his father didn’t love him. He was afraid that he did. That in his own callous, twisted way, he loved his son and that was how he showed it. Rhys swore to himself out of fear, that he would never turn out like him. And when his sister was born, he became fearful for a different reason. But it was different with Nyx. His father doted on her, though he never outwardly showed it. Rhys could sense the way his demeanour changed whenever she was around. The way his eyes melted when she would smile up at him with those endless violet eyes. His violet eyes. Rhys knew without a doubt his father loved his daughter, but for the first time, he wasn’t afraid.
Looking at her now, with eyes that resembled their father’s, alight with excitement, and the soft midday breeze ruffling through her wild, curly hair that resembled their mother’s. Rhysand could see the future as clear as the warm winter sunlight. He knew her true power would not lie in battle, but in making real change. He believed that this babe, who would someday grow into a strong, brilliant female, with Illyrian blood flowing through her veins and Illyrian wings to take her to the skies. Someday she could be a symbol for what was possible. Someday, they could ensure other females like her, can hear the songs of the wind. Someday, when he is High Lord of the Night Court, and she, the General Commander of the Illyrian armies. Together they could build a future that was good for all. Someday, Nyx. But today, she will learn how to fly.

In truth, the short story sjm should give us is Rhys shooting his shot at Amren and then Amren laughing for 30 pages straight, followed by Mor laughing for another 15 pages.

All Bastards Are Brothers
Just a series of kinda fluffy, kinda angsty one-shots about the brotherly bond between Rhys, Cassian, and Azriel. Stories are not connected.
Ao3 Part One
Part Two: A Shoulder to Cry On
“"Cass," he said again. This time Cassian didn't respond, choosing to wipe furiously at his eyes, so Azriel said his name one more time. This one commanding him to look at him. "Cassian."
"What?" Cassian turned around, his siphon flashing. Anybody else would have recoiled, choosing most likely to leave the commander alone rather than facing the wrath of his killing power, but Azriel wouldn't. Instead, he stared straight into his best friend's now-red eyes, and as he had done countless times in their younger years, he opened his arms out wide.”
Or: Upset over the state of his and Nesta's relationship, Cassian relies on Azriel to help him out. Luckily, the shadowsinger is content to lend a listening ear.
It had been the third time in one week that Rhys had called a family meeting.
Recently, with the Illyrian rebellions finally squashed and the turbulent relationships between the Courts still yielding trouble, as well as the ever-constant rebuilding from Hybern, it was becoming hard to get everyone in the same place at the same time. It seemed to Azriel that someone was always away on business. However, by some miracle in the past week, they had all managed to be present at not only one family dinner, but three.
The first had been, in all accounts, a failure. Rhys and Feyre had learned that she was carrying a daughter, not a son, and they had called a meeting to celebrate the future High Lady of the Night Court. The wine and the appetizers had been fun while they lasted, but before they had even filled up their plates with dinner, Feyre had made a comment about becoming fat, so Rhys kicked everyone out of the house in order to show his mate how much he still cherished her body. A sweet sentiment, but even if Rhys had allowed them to stay, no one would have wanted to be around for that, least of all Azriel.
The second, at least, had been a full dinner, and a delicious one at that, but it had ended up as more of a meeting than anything else. Each member of the Inner Circle briefed the group on their tasks and their tasks alone, so instead of their family, it was their Court. He wasn't Azriel for that dinner, but shadowsinger and spymaster, and Rhys wasn't his brother, but his deadly High Lord. They all hated these dinners. No one liked to be an advisor when they could be a friend.
To make up for it, tonight, as he had heard Rhys tell Elain earlier, was meant purely for their family: A break in the chaos of their lives when they would leave all of their worries and responsibilities behind and laugh and drink until the stars rose high in the sky.
And that was what it had been.
The eight of them, counting his High Lady’s sisters, sat around a new, slightly larger table, and simply talked. Rhys told stories of their youthful adventures, Cassian and Amren bickered about nothing, Mor drank and laughed loudly in his face, and Azriel, as per usual, joined Nesta in a quiet aloofness and watched everything go down.
Feyre had hardly eaten at dinner, pretending to enjoy herself, but she wasn't fooling him. Her pale face and subtle disgust as certain foods passed were incriminating, and the glances she shared back and forth with Rhys solidified it enough so that he didn't need his shadows to tell him anything. Nonetheless, it wasn’t at all surprising to him that when Rhys invited them all to stay for drinks, Feyre declined, and instead resigned herself to the bedrooms upstairs.
"I think that I will leave as well," Nesta announced to the room, sending a small smile to the remaining Archeron sister. She waited for the chorus of goodbyes and a kiss on the cheek from Elain before closing the door behind her.
“Rita’s or drinks tonight?” Mor asked the remaining.
Rhys groaned loudly. “Just drinks, please. I’m too tired to deal with dancing.”
Mor cocked an eyebrow, “Feyre keeping you up at night?”
“My daughter is,” he said. “Or rather she keeps my mate up.”
“Take it from someone who’s millennia older than you,” Amren warned. “You won’t get a good sleep ever again.”
Rhys winced as Mor patted him on the back. “Can’t wait.”
Azriel smirked and turned to his other brother who was intensely staring at the wood floor, eyebrows furrowing. Azriel was about to address him when he suddenly chugged the rest of his wine and muttered something about walking the girl home, pulling the door closed behind him too hard for the others not to notice. And sure enough, as he turned back around, all four of them were looking.
Azriel noted how their expressions changed one by one. Rhys frowned at the open door, where Cassian had stood just moments before, Mor did the same, Amren looked bored, though her eyes betrayed a hint of annoyance, and Elain cringed, violently. Azriel couldn't blame her for that. If he hadn't spent centuries perfecting his own poker face, he supposed that his expression would look very similar to hers.
Nobody dared to say anything. There was an unspoken rule of their family not to mention the bond between Cassian and the fiercest Archeron sister, no matter how painfully evident it was. It wasn’t until Rhys cleared his throat to thank Nuala and Cerridwen that the easy conversation started up again, though Azriel wouldn’t join. Instead, he slowly drifted out of the dining room and peered out the window. Both Cassian and Nesta were long gone, and Azriel got a bad feeling in his stomach.
He sent a look back into the room. Rhys was chatting with Amren as Elain cleared off the table. Part of him ached to stay and assist the latter, but Cassian needed him more. Without another glance from the others, Azriel silently wrapped himself in his shadows and disappeared.
The night had been a pleasant temperature, but the air was now thick and moist, threatening the city with stormy weather, and he loathed the way it stuck to his skin like sweat after a long day of training.
By the time he was right outside the house’s cast iron fence, he could see all the way down the street, he watched as his brother caught up to Nesta and grabbed her elbow. For a few moments they walked together, but then she turned to face him. He couldn't hear her words, nor would he use his shadows to spy on them, but her body was rigid in a way that was sharp and commanding. Maybe not in a mean or prickly way, not as she used to be, but in a way that left no room for Cassian to rebound. With that, she continued her path home and left Cassian stranded on the footbridge.
Cassian watched her presumably until she rounded the corner before turning to face the water. Azriel waited a few minutes to see if he would return to the house, but he stayed glued to the spot, wings dropping.
Azriel frowned lightly and flew down to the bridge, landing just on the edge so he could walk up. Cassian didn't lift his head from the wall when he spoke to him.
"Go away, Az."
"Not unless you come with me," he said back coolly, sticking his hands into his pockets.
"Yeah," the general sniffed. "Well, then I guess we're both in for disappointment this evening."
"She'll come around, Cass."
"I wish I could agree with you."
Cassian had told Azriel about the bond when he and Elain visited the camps a few years earlier. Elain had stayed with Nesta while Azriel had taken Cassian away and gotten him drunk.
He didn't regret it. Cassian had needed a night to let go, to not care for Nesta or any kind of rebellion. It had taken that night of freedom and three quarters of a bottle of brandy for Cassian to confess to Azriel what they all had suspected for months: he and Nesta were mates.
He remembered blocking the air around them with his shadows, preventing unwanted ears from listening in, and keeping his face neutral and non-judgmental. He remembered not wanting to risk setting Cassian off on him. Tonight would most likely end the same way. Though, the chances of waking up the next morning to a regretful, hungover, and angry Cassian were much slimmer.
Still, Azriel had kept his promise that he wouldn’t tell anyone, and if that meant that he’d have to be a shoulder to lean on tonight, then he was happy to do it. After all, he would do a lot of things to get Cassian to smile again. He hated the heartbroken look on his face. It made him want to march up to Nesta's apartment and yell until she apologized. But, he wouldn't.
He knew what it was like to be ripped from the only world he knew. He knew what it was like to be forced into a strange place with strange people and with powers nobody understood. To hear, see, and feel things that nobody else could--no, he too knew what it was like to have powers he also didn't understand. Little did she know, Azriel was her once. And if he hadn't had the shadows, or Rhys and Cassian to keep him company those first years of his life, he wouldn't know what would have happened.
If Nesta needed the space and the time away from everything, it would be granted to her, and if that meant that he had to support his brother more in the process, that was something Azriel needed to do.
Cassian sniffed again, bringing Azriel out of his own introspection, and he glanced down, frowning, to see that his brother was gripping the railing so hard that his knuckles were white.
"Cassian," Azriel said gently.
"I'm fine, Az."
"We've already established that that isn't true."
"I'll be fine, then."
"Cass," he said again. This time Cassian didn't respond, choosing to wipe furiously at his eyes, so Azriel said his name one more time. This one commanded him to look at him. "Cassian."
"What?" Cassian turned around, his siphon flashing. Anybody else would have recoiled, choosing most likely to leave the commander alone rather than facing the wrath of his killing power, but Azriel wouldn't. Instead, he stared straight into his friend's now-red eyes, and as he had done countless times in their younger years, he opened his arms out wide.
Cassian looked unsure for a second, glancing around at the deserted streets, but he eventually gave in and wrapped himself around his brother, burying his wet face in his neck. Azriel only rubbed a soothing hand on Cassian's back.
"Gods, Az. I don't know how Rhys did it," he said. "Every time she's near me...I can’t think of anything else. Everything is just Nesta, Nesta, Nesta. I can’t breathe, I can’t think, it’s only her. I swear she sets my soul on fire, and she doesn't even fucking know it.” Azriel remained silent, egging Cassian to keep talking. “Why can’t she just see me? Does she think about me at all?”
“She does, brother, I swear to you,” Azriel murmured back.
“How do you know that?”
Azriel thought back to all the longing stares she gave him when she thought no one was looking, and all of the times the shadows gossiped into his ear. “I just do.”
Cassian broke away from Azriel's embrace and began to pace the short width of the footbridge.
"I thought that when I found my mate, it would plainly be the best fuck I ever had. All I'd really known about mates was Rhys' parents, and they hated each other, so romance never clicked into it. But Nesta," Cassian faltered as he said her name. "She's way more than a good fuck. Mother's tits, she's way more than a romance. I know I sound like one of her slutty novels, but I swear, she's the other half of me. The half I hadn't known I was missing."
Azriel knew the feeling well. He had replayed that moment when Mor first walked into the Illyrian camp all of those years ago in his mind too many times not too. He had believed her to be his other half, to be the light to his void darkness, and though now his love for Mor was beginning to fade, he still understood the pain of not sharing his life with her, and he would be damned to let Cassian suffer from the same fate.
“What do you want her to be, Cass?”
At that moment, a thin drizzle started to fall from the sky. Cassian looked up at it before speaking.
“I want her to be the person that I spend the rest of my life loving,” Cassian looked back to his brother. “Who I can fight for and come home to at the end of the day, who I can raise a family with...that is if she wants one.”
“That’s remarkably soft for you, brother.”
"I love her, Az,” he said, his voice low and defeated. “And it's driving me crazy."
Cassian collapsed onto the bench and put his head into his hands while Azriel continued to lean against the railing. They fell into companionable silence after that, the only noise becoming the soft thunder and Cassian’s occasional sniff.
"Cass," Azriel started a while later, as the rain started to get heavier. "We should probably go back inside."
"Okay.  It made Azriel's heart hurt to see Cassian so downtrodden and dejected. He stood up and reached a hand down to his brother, who wiped the long hair from his eyes and grabbed it. "Thanks."
Their walk kept the silence for the most part, Cassian lost in his thoughts, but before they turned the corner into the driveway of the townhouse, Azriel chirped quietly, "At least now they won't be able to tell that you've been crying."
Cassian let out a laugh. It was dry and emotionless, sure, but it was a start, Azriel hoped. "I suppose you're right, Az.”
As they walked in through the door, the remaining three sets of eyes stared at them, the room quiet as they waited for an explanation. Any other dinner, he'd let Cassian speak for the both of them, letting him take the brunt of whatever misadventure that they had gotten themselves into at that time. It was one thing he always deeply appreciated about his brother. Azriel hated being the center of attention, hated all the eyes staring at him, hated how it made him feel small, even if it was just their family, and for Cassian to see that and absorb what excess attention he could, Azriel was eternally grateful. However, now was not the time for him to shrink back in the shadows and watch his brother take the reins. It was time for Azriel to return the favor.
"It was stuffy in here," Azriel supplied, knowing that Cassian couldn't. "We stepped out for fresh air."
"In the rain?" Rhys asked softly. Cassian stilled beside him as if his brother had just revealed a deep secret of his. Azriel tore his gaze away from his brothers in favor of Elain and silently pleaded with her to say something. Weak. His shadows chided him.
"Well," Elain huffed. "The rain has only just started, and they probably weren't exactly keen on flying in bad weather."
"I'd rather not be struck by the wrath of the mother," Azriel replied smoothly. "What's the big deal, Rhysie? Scared of little rain?"
Amren snorted, and Azriel felt a renewed sense of control, even if it only slightly reassured him.
Rhysand rolled his eyes at his brother and held his hands up in fake surrender. "I was just asking."
"What are we drinking?" Azriel said, walking into the living area. Rhysand began to speak about a case of wine that Lucien had sent over from the Day Court, but Azriel wasn't listening. His focus was put entirely on Cassian, who remained close to the door as if he was planning to leave again. Wordlessly, he instructed his shadows to push Cassian over, though he seemed to wake up from his trance and walk the remaining way himself. Rhys and Elain didn't seem to notice his little trick, but Amren caught his eye with a smirk. Azriel glared back, daring her to say something.
Amren wrinkled her nose across the table. “Rhys, dry your dogs off before they start to smell.”

I created this playlist long ago and it is already available on tumblr (on my old blog) but I thought I would repost now that I have a blog that suits it more. You can go listen to every song on youtube by clicking on its number down below.  Keep in mind I chose the songs after reading ACOMAF. Italic ones are my fave and the ones you have to listen to. Enjoy !
This is mostly punk/rock and epic music (which I’m pretty sure is what Rhysand likes listening too as well as classic music).
I. Devil on My Shoulder - II. Empty with You - III. Unstoppable - IV. Hysteria - V. Heart of Courage - VI. Surrender - VII. Clair de Lune - VIII. Castle of Glass - IX. Iris (cover) - X. River Flows in You
