when your favorite character makes it to the finale
As a fellow Danganronpa fan, I'd like to imagine that if Pre-game Shuichi wasn't, you know, gone forever because he'd given up his life to become an anime character like a dumbass and could somehow witness our Shuichi kick So Much Ass in Trial 6, he would be the one cheering him on the loudest. After all, Shuichi is his perfect little detective guy and the person he once hoped he could become. That's why I can hear the "You tell them!" in his voice in my head so very clearly. And in spite of being responsible for ending Pre-game Shuichi's favorite TV show in the world, at the core of it, Shuichi was ultimately fighting on behalf of his friends for what was right all the way to the end.
And who wouldn't want to get behind that?

Harukawa is looking at him like she’s disturbed, like she’s only just now realising that this isn’t a lie, her hands clenching and unclenching at her sides. “You…”
She doesn’t finish the thought, though, trailing off and looking slightly lost, and when he’s sure she won’t continue, he lifts a hand to rub the back of his neck, letting out a breath.
“Okay,” he says. He wants to know what Saihara means by sidekicks, but there’s so much that’s confusing to him right now, he doesn’t want to reach for excessive information and get his head even more muddled than it already is. Instead, he runs his hand through his hair, wrinkling his nose when it comes away sweaty, and reaches down to wipe it off on his hospital gown. “Uh, I got another question, if that’s okay?”
“Sure,” Saihara says, breathlessly, one of his hands lifted to cup his mouth. “What is it?”
“Who am I?”

Hiii, Hello, what if I dropped an abandoned vent fic from February 2020 that's based off true events and didn't elaborate? Anyway: (vague and non-fanon) pre-game, one-sided saiou, angst, a note of saimota but not serious
The world stopped. No. He stopped. The world kept on spinning as if it wasn't over.
Actually wrong again, he didn't stop either for some reason. There was no sudden halt, in which he would freeze, heart painfully clenched in a second of utter horror, panic, despair, his world shattering. It was an over 20 cars pile up tragedy in slow motion that started with just two vehicles colliding. After that lots of others being unable to brake fast enough was inevitable on a highway of life.
He didn't know when it started, maybe like all kinds of evil it had roots in middle school. Technically, he knew it was not true, it started earlier, truly it started to be a problem later, well that's a lie too. It was already a problem in middle school, he just didn't acknowledge it at the time.
It could be that this whole situation was like thousands of domino pieces he was putting up ever since he first saw Shuichi in the kindergarten, so over twelve years of work on fragile construction, few segments has been in need of repairs before, but what happened this time was damaging beyond repair.
Or maybe he was just being overdramatic again, but it really did feel like he built up his own doom this way and just recently somebody knocked one of the dominoes down, the very first one and now the sound of them all clattering was echoing in his head for months.
Pretty sure that this somebody was himself and nobody else, too, but that doesn't really matter. What mattered was that now he was alone and pitying himself.
A year ago was an entirely different life, perhaps they were even different people, but he wouldn't say that, at the core people don't change after they aren't children anymore, some parts of one's soul can be only shaped in childhood and that's most likely a bad thing for them. Not to say that for everyone. Again, the life was definitely different, present feels like an alternate universe.
They were just entering a new year similarly to now and the saying that the whole year is going to be like the new year's eve might have been a curse. Honestly, he wasn't that familiar with it before, but after Momota repeated it so many times during one day it burned into his mind. It was just the three of them at Saihara's house, all eighteen, but no alcohol, because everybody knew it just wouldn't pass with Saihara's parents and at that time he didn't mind. God, it really was just a year ago when he was all stops against drinking ever, look at him now.
Ah, but not to waste time thinking about own alcoholic father, the thing about Saihara's parents is they're unpredictable as his mother is absolutely insane, and his dad is under her shoe. So, not to anger the beast they spend most of the evening quietly sharing sweets, listening to music and talking about the dumbest shit they could, but it was fun, it was what he was used to.
What happened with that damned can of peaches was probably some curse too, like, they totally should have given up on opening it after five minutes, but no. It wasn't like any of them to just give up, what was started had to be done, doesn't matter that they were too dumb to use can opener correctly. Momota tried helping with a knife, but eventually Saihara got frustrated and pulled the half way cut open lid with his bare hands. This goal fixated madman. Honestly, all of them.
Through the year they brought this story back too many times and incorrectly as a reminder of strength and determination instead of taking things too far.
He only started to think of that day as a cursed one year later, comparing events from around midnight to last days of the next year. Which greatly upset him, because seeing such connections was his mother's thing. She was especially stuck on seeing meanings in dates of people's deaths or birthdays. Annoying.
Basically, he wanted to kiss Shuichi at midnight. It was stupid and he knew he was too much of a coward to actually go through with this. But emotions were high and they were having so much fun that he though that maybe, maybe he could do this.
He couldn't. He walked up to him, got close... and then backed out and played it off as a joke. Unfortunately, Shuichi is this kind of person that while usually reserved forgets himself while having too much fun and becomes some sort of insane.
He saw the shine of idea appearing in his eyes from up close. And then, before he could turn around to notice the whole thing, it was too late. What he managed to register was Momota looking traumatized, wiping his lips and muttering questions like "why?" and making general sounds of disgust and something almost like despair at losing his first kiss like that.
Ouma, too, felt like he lost something important while looking at Saihara who was laughing, carefree after delivering critical damage to two of his closest friends at once.

I can do Shuichi, yeah! I tried to keep this as spoiler free as I could, but just in case, I suggest before you read this you've atleast seen Chapter 1 until the end.

Yandere! Shuichi Saihara Concept
Pairing: Romantic
Possible Trigger Warnings: Gender-Neutral Darling, Clingy behavior, Manipulation, Implied intimacy, Dubious relationship, Touch starved Shuichi, Isolation mention, Implied stalking, Confidence issues, Trust issues, Delusional behavior.
Shuichi shows at least two, maybe three different personalities throughout the game.
The one before Kaede's death, the one after, and pregame if you want to count that one.
However, this concept will focus on Pre/Post Kaede death.
You most likely met Shuichi before the first class trial.
At this point Shuichi is shy, easily nervous, and doesn't have a lot of confidence in his situation.
Kaede is most likely the bridge between you until he has some confidence of his own.
The bubbly girl makes you three a trio throughout your first few days in this isolated hell of yours.
Shuichi trusts you and sees you as an ally and friend.
You'll find he flusters quickly and blushes whenever he talks with you.
He doesn't necessarily have feelings yet but it does happen a lot around you.
Kaede probably makes small jabs at him about his staring and blushing around you.
This does not help him compose himself in the slightest.
Shuichi's attraction is subtle until after the first class trial.
Many are a mess after Kaede's death, including you and Shuichi.
Although, her death brings you two closer.
No longer a trio, instead a duo, you two help console each other.
This helps solidify Shuichi's festering feelings about you.
Even when you two hang around with Kaito or Kokichi, Shuichi still finds himself the closest with you.
Shuichi is Clingy, Manipulative, Loyal, Delusional and very dependent when it comes to his darling for the most part.
It's said Shuichi is shy about romance, but he takes it very seriously.
He trusts his darling with his life.
He also trusts you to be loyal like him, yet his lack of confidence makes him scared you'll like someone else.
Shuichi is also a bit submissive towards his darling.
He likes your touch and feels safe around you....
Shuichi gets incredibly defensive when people bring up his obsession.
He isn't a creep, he swears!
Shuichi tries to convince himself his obsession over you is normal considering the situation.
He just... wants to fulfill Kaede's promise with you.
That's why he follows you everywhere-
Plus he just seems like himself when around you.
He visits your room often, walks with you everywhere, he's just happy to be with you.
He'd be so flustered at physical contact at first.
So if you like to hug, he'll freeze before giving into it.
He gets better the more it happens.
He loves your hugs, your warmth is the most comforting thing in this place.
There's times you'll barely get alone time as Shuichi acts like he's scared to leave you alone.
He would be lying if he said he trusted everyone around you-
Shuichi himself is a liar at times, which makes him manipulative.
V3 brings in the mechanic of lies into Danganronpa.
A lot of the V3 cast would lie to encourage you to do something.
Shuichi does it just to keep you beside him.
He hates being so cautious about everyone...
Although one slip up and he may lose you forever.
Better safe than sorry.
Shuichi promises to you, truthful as always, that he'll never let anyone harm you.
Kaede would want him to look after you while she's gone... he knows it.
Shuichi would probably stutter and lose a lot of his confidence if you ever asked him to go to the love hotel.
He wants to... he really does...
He just needs time to prepare-
Shuichi seems like the type of yandere to do whatever he can to show he loves you.
He's dedicated, but not deranged enough to kill someone out of jealousy or kidnap fully.
He may try to convince you to stay in his room for long periods of time, however.
Isolation would probably be up his alley if he was able to.
Shuichi would be so sloppy when it comes to affection.
He's so nervous when it comes to hugs and kisses.
Your touch just feels so good, though...
Touch starved. Shuichi definitely feels like the touch starved type.
While Shuichi gains confidence, he'd still probably want his darling to say he's theirs.
Shuichi wants nothing more than to have his darling be his, and him be yours.
You could use him however you wish, he doesn't care, he loves and trusts you almost blindly with his obsession.

Kaede Akamatsu - A popular girl who conceals her more cynical side. Her classmates adore her for her confident and extraverted personality, and can motivate anyone to follow her strong and calm leadership. However, what people dont notice behind her level-headed fascade is that she is quite dubious and suspicious of others, often trying to find the true hidden despair humanity has so she can never be blind sighted by any harm
Shuichi Saihara - Known online as one of the most deductive arg detective, in real life, shuichi is nothing more than a danganronpa obsessed fan boy. Though a sweet albeit very awkward person, he can get a bit obssessive about talking about danganronpa, leaving non fans speechless by how much a nobody like him can talk abt the topic. He's intrigued by the thrill of murder mysteries danganronpa provides, and tries to apply said detective skills with args he finds online
Kaito Momota - The bully with a smile, Kaito has an odd reputation. Not outright aggressive, but definitely your average jock kind of character who would get violent if push comes to shove. But usually, he gives off a laid back attitude around his friends, which somehow makes him more formidable somehow with how confident he is. But behind the manly exterior, Kaito secretly wishes to find a true passion in life, fearing he is doomed to be nothing more than a high school has-been
Rantaro Amami - Returning after his successful run of season 52, Rantaro is a world wide celebrity for his heroic sacrafice in the final trial. But, he has no recollection of it, nor does he want to see any of the footage of the game. He is far more drained, tired of the constant media attention following him and talking about events he cannot even remember. Compared to his considerate pre-52 self, Rantaro is determined to stay alive and while he preached hope on tv, he has lost faith in others and acts like an aloof celebrity behind his dry smile
Maki Harukawa - Maki is a cool-headed girl, very unlike her aggressive in game self. nothing much can phase her, and while she has a calm smile, maki is truly seeking out her next thrill that can actually make her truly feel alive. As such, maki is quite atheltic, working out and very active in the school tennis club
Himiko Yumeno - Even by pg shuichi standards, himiko is quiet. Most take her for as mute since outside of the occassional peep, himiko refuses to talk. Himiko doesn't want to let others in, scared that others can hurt her, and she tries her best to stay in the sidelines and not draw attention to herself. She has a low opinion of herself, and she is just hoping that someone can be the one to reach out to her first
Angie Yonaga - The student activist of the school and class president known as a buzzkill, those outside her inner circle don’t tend to like Angie for her outspoken opinions on a variety of topics. Due to her religious values, she personally finds the idea of Danganronpa detestable, choosing to go to the interview in order to personally confront its creators and demand it be shut down. But to clarify angie doesn't believe her religous beliefs are above others, she simply wants to create a more peaceful world and has dreams of helping everyone
Gonta Gokuhara - Heir of the wealthy Gokuhara bloodline, Gonta has a lot of expectations placed onto him, and as such, he too has high expectations of the people around him as well. Composed and somewhat stoic, he is typically found reading a book in the courtyard, studying, or working out. He is a man of strict schedule imposed by his family, and as such, many find it best to ignore him. He is very perfectionistic and can be quick to criticize other. But in truth, little see how much Gonta applies those standards to himself, never believing himself to be enough for his prestigious family. In truth, Gonta is intimidated by others and feels himself not worthy to speak with them.
Kirumi Tojo - Kirumi Tojo is poor, but her suck-up and stuck-up attitude sure makes it hrd to have such an impression. Top of her grade in terms of academic test scores, Kirumi pushes herself to rise above her low family income to pursue greater things. She works incredibly hard and dedicates herself greatly to give the appearance of a refined student and student council vice president, growing an ego that she will rise above her class. Though well liked by teachers, some people can find her a tad egotistical underneath her high class demeanor. Her constant comparisons with others can be especially grating.
Kokichi Oma - A quiet class representative, Kokichi Oma does a lot to help his class out however he can. Through his wide smiles and numerous good deeds, he is often in charge of a lot of responsibilities, almost to his detriment. Never one for confrontation, he hides himself behind lies to appear more likable and helpful than he is: A classic person pleaser to the highest degree. But he’s not stupid, aware that he is often used, but he can’t push himself to say no to any requests. Behind all his non-judgemental words, he tries to suppress his more joke-ish attitude, sometimes seen stifling an immature laugh to himself.
Korekiyo Shinguji - Kind, studious, but reserved, Korekiyo has many walls up, especially with the fact that nobody has seen the second half of his face. Whispers surround the boy, all of which point to a headline from years ago of an unfortunate tragedy occurring with the death of an upcoming idol that shared the surname of shinguji. Many are convinced Korekiyo is the girl’s younger brother, but without being able to see half of his face and usually hiding behind his hair, there can be no confirmation. But when confronted with such rumors, Korekiyo’s usual collected attitude sours, and he would excuse himself. He appears to be haunted from a ghost of his past.
Miu Iruma - “The blonde, bimbo chick” is what most think when the name, Miu Iruma, is brought up. Popular and surrounded by numerous shallow friends, Iruma is known for her feisty, playful attitude, especially around the boys. But deep down, her aggression stems from her own perceived inferiority, despising that everybody assumes her as stupid and objectify her. It frustrates her to no end that she can’t be seen for anything past her looks, but with her fake friends surrounding her, she doesn’t feel like she can make such an odd complaint to anyone. More than anything, she wish she was spoken to, rather than treated as a joke.
Tenko Chabashira - Energetic and hyper, Tenko is sort of a weird one, always chattering about her latest obsession eagerly. She is not as popular as Miu or Kaede nor is she as smart as Kirumi, but she is just a girl with her own passions who wants to hang out with her friends with similar interests. She adores girl idol groups and devours discussion threads and Twitter posts, and just wants to nerd out about it.
Ryoma Hoshi - A delinquent with not a lot going for him, Hoshi is isolated from others with his jaded attitude. As they say, he’s been on the wrong side of the tracks, and usually doesn’t show up to class, typically skipping or found loitering on school grounds. Not many people give him a chance, his reputation exceeding him but he doesn’t seem to mind it. But, when you get to know him, he shows to give good advice and likes any company he can crack a good joke with.
Keebo - Keebo is created by Team Danganronpa and doesn't know about much of life outside of that. He is only loyal and can obey what he is told to do.
Tsumugi Shirogane - A stressed out DR writer in dire who finally has managed to score the role as lead producer for the latest season after her success with season 52. She is dedicated to her job both as a part of its creation but also as a fan, belieivng that her sole purpose is to continue the danganronpa legacy.

On the subject of the white board, he ponders, carefully, the word he scrawled under Saihara's picture. Trustworthy. Was he, though? Maybe he just was getting too friendly. Saihara was way too simple, and there had to be some kind of layer to him he was missing, but...
Looking for justice so earnestly wasn't so bad. Kokichi wanted a rival anyway. Even if he was a sad sack with an easy-to-break spirit, Saihara was worthy of Kokichi's attention. Maybe because he was the only person who could ever...
...Kokichi blinks a few times until the thought leaves him. No, not even Saihara could figure him out.

This fic was initially written before V3’s English release, and it’s fascinating to see the influence of Kokichi’s Japanese characterization on the text. His internal dialogue feels very true to what we see in the game, especially the unreliable narration throughout. The story takes place early on in V3 and follows Kokichi and Shuichi waking up after a night in the Love Hotel, and Kokichi grapples with his feelings for Shuichi as he reminds himself how dangerous it is to get attached to anyone during a killing game.
Overall, it’s a simple fic with some cute pre-relationship fluff to even out both characters’ deep-seated insecurity and distrust. Give it a try and it’ll give you something to think about for a while.
Rated M (It’s a “morning after” fic, so while nothing explicit happens on-screen, sex is still a prominent theme)

YOU'RE SO RIGHT THOUGH Komahina truly is such a good ship and I feel like it's the one implied most in canon. The way they compliment each other, they remind me of a yin and yang. If you have the time for it I'd definitely love to hear your Saiouma thoughts too because Saiouma is definitely one of my favorite ships (I analyzed their characters way too hard and just fell for them)

Something I actually like about saiouma is kinda the opposite of Komahina, and that’s the lack of in-game subtext. I don’t just mean that in terms of romantic subtext, but also just who Ouma is as a character, since you get absolutely no concrete backstory for him, and don’t even know if you can trust the small tidbit you do get with DICE, and because of this he can kinda be whatever you want him to be. He is purposefully shrouded in mystery because the theme of the game is truth vs fiction, and I think his character was meant to exemplify that theme by being unknowable. I’ve seen the claim that Kokichi is just a knockoff Nagito but I don’t think that’s fair because I think he’s very purposefully the way he is.
That being said, I personally buy into the hc that he is anxious and has trust issues, which is why he constantly avoids the truth and acts out the way he does in game (Weeby News has a really good ouma analysis on YouTube I would highly recommend if you haven’t seen it)
This hc is sort of the hinge of why I love Saiouma, because this puts them in a position of understanding each other, both fearing the power of truth, albeit for different reasons. This along with what in-game context you do get from FTEs is what drives it for me. All of the other characters write off Kokichi as a trouble maker, bad news, purely antagonistic, but if you do all his FTEs then that makes Shuichi the only one to extend the courtesy of trying to get to know him.
That being said, unlike Komaeda, Ouma does NOT care to submit to the terrifying ordeal of being known- at first. He is having fun with Saihara, he’s definitely a little gay boy for Saihara, but he’s not revealing anything; of course Shuichi sees Kokichi as an enigma, or even a puzzle to solve, which is why he keeps coming back. However, over the course of all FTEs and his Salmon-mode ending, Shuichi comes to appreciate Ouma for who he is- lies and all- and agrees to meet Kokichi in his level, literally hand in hand.
Again we come back to the idea that this ship is very mailable, as is seen by the plethora or pre, post, and in-game art and fics. There are AUs left and right because there is just so much room for adaptation: people can pick and choose exactly what they want Saiouma to be to an incredible degree. Of course my preferred dynamic is always going to be the A+ banter that you get with the introvert/extrovert, and because they’re both anxious and insecure in their own ways, I think this enables some very cute content.
I’m the end I do tend to latch on to what existing canon content there is cuz that’s just how my brain works; they compliment and contrast each other because they both understand the gravity of truth and lies, and I think they end up understanding each others different ways of using them. I think there’s a lot of room for growth for both of them, and I think they’re both in a position to empower and uplift the other on their character arcs.
I do think the game could have done a better job of giving subtext that they might genuinely care for each other (much the way Komahina does) but I do understand the reasoning behind leaving it more open to interpretation. Either way I greatly appreciate the levels of creativity that come from saiouma shippers, and I will always be a sucker for phantom thief AUs 😅

“I said that?” That doesn’t really sound like something Kaito would say. He’s never been very good at encouraging people. “I…”
“You people all go waaaay too fast!” the purple-eyed man chirps. He swings himself into Kaito’s pod, gracefully, as if he isn’t bothered by the muscle atrophy at all, and then latches tight onto Kaito’s arm with a big, cheery grin. “One step at a time, okaaaay? Momota-chan doesn’t remember anything from after he was put in the simulation, right? But from how stressed the staff members are looking, it probably wasn’t on purpose! So something went wrong and you don’t remember!”
His eyes glisten. He looks over towards the man with blue hair.
“Don’t suppose there could’ve been… a wire crossed, or two, while he was in there?”

A simulation error results in Kaito waking up without any memories of the game, completely as he was before he entered.
