S4 Starts with the Demobats Attacking the School / Rejected Stobin Time Travel AU Bit
Eddie's hunched over the table, fingers held up in wicked claws. His hair hangs down as he tilts his head, voice pitched to the maniacal tone of the villain he's finally unleashed on his players.
This is it. The big reveal, the prelude to the boss fight. His players have worked hard to get here, and they stare raptly, caught up in the rising horror of betrayal and terror that Eddie's been weaving around them.
This whole campaign took months to reach this point. His glee cannot be contained and so he channels it into his villain instead; cackling madly before throwing himself upwards, one hand covering his face but with his fingers splayed to showcase one wide eye.
"Now you see your fatal flaw!" Eddie crows. "Pick up your weapons and--"
He slams one hand down on the table.
"--fight --"
He slams his other hand down.
"--for--"
A third bang, far louder than Eddie's own echoes through the room.
Hellfire as a whole jumps --Dustin screaming and Jeff shouting--as Steve fucking Harrington bursts through the drama room's door.
"Why the hell don't you have your walkies!?" He thunders as he flies in, face furious.
Fury bolts through Eddie like lightning, so fast it leaves him temporarily light headed.
"Steve!" Dustin yelps at the same time Mike pissily shouts his name. Both leap to their feet, as Harrington, chest heaving, slams the door behind himself.
"We have a code red!" Harrington spits, eyes focused on the younger Hellfire members. He fumbles with the door for a moment, long enough for Eddie to realize he’s trying to lock it, before the ex-jock strides into the room.
It's not until Steve gets closer that Eddie registers the bat with nails in it. There's a dark, tacky liquid leaking down the sides, little bits of something rancid clinging to some of the nails.
A metallic scent that screams 'wrong wrong wrong!' and oh God.
It's blood.
Real blood, not the fake stuff Eddie once bought for his Dracula costume.
"The Party--" Dustin hisses, head flying comically between Steve and the rest of the table (but most noticeably, down at Eddie’s end, where the older Hellfire members reside.)
"I suggest you read them in or whatever Nance calls it, Henderson, because they're involved now." Harrington says, deadly serious.
Sinclair’s face scrunches up in confusion. "What do you--"
Something screeches outside. The noise raises every hair on Eddie's neck, and temporarily stuns the room into silence.
An echoing scream answers, just as inhuman as the first.
Harrington winces. "Give em the cliffnotes version man, there's a bunch of bats outside."
"Bat bats or--demobats?"
"What do you think, Mike?"
"Fuck." Sinclair hisses under his breath.
"Anyone besides me have any weapons?" Harrington asks and he sounds like he's not hopeful for a yes but is asking anyway.
"Yes Steve, we all brought guns to school. Mines in my locker!" Mike snips, and Harrington levels him with that annoyed look mothers everywhere somehow seem to know.
"I've got my slingshot." Lucas chimes in, patting his backpack. "I uh, I don't go anywhere without it anymore."
Harrington nods, once. His faze ticks up, sweeping across the room to the older members.
"Alright. Anyone else?"
"A knife." Jeff admits after a long pause, his own eyes trained on Harrington's nail bat.
Grant shakes his head, and Gareth, usually the loudest of them, is silent.
A static crackle makes everyone jump, before a tinny voice comes through. "Steve, are you there? This is Nancy."
"Hey Nance. We have an Upside Down situation at the school."
A pause then; "it's not just the school."
"Shit." Dustin hisses. Then adds; "Scale of one to ten, how many bats would you say are outside?”
“Too many.” Harrington answers, running his free hand through his hair. It’s a soothing motion, Eddie has watched Steve enough to know that, but this time something’s different.
Less “shit I flunked my chemistry final” and more frantic, “we’re losing the baseball game and also Hargrove’s being weirdly aggressive again.”
Not that Eddie witnessed such events, just that he had….heard about them.
Sure.
He’ll go with that.
xXx
Wheeler Jr yelps, sliding as a demobat swoops down and beats at him with its wings. Teeth snap close to his head, missing his ear by inches.
He twirls, arms waving madly, until Harrington grabs him, keeping Mike's head down with one hand and jamming his nailbat toward the creature with the other.
The two of them manage to make it into Eddie's van, half falling half jumping, Gareth and Grant slamming the door behind them as demobats dive at them.
"Gun it!" Gareth calls and Eddie does so, the lurch sending Henderson and Jeff tumbling to the floor.
Eddie watches in the mirror as Mike, the most antagonist of the freshman when it comes to Harrington, clings to the ex-jocks shirt for a moment.
Steve's hand has left the back of his shirt, though now Eddie can see his grip has changed to more of a tender hold on the kid. Something familiar and comforting.
"I got you." Steve says quietly and it's only because Eddie's got his attention split between him and the road that he catches it, and the way Mike presses his forehead against Steve's shoulder for a moment before finally sitting up.
Which just confirms what Eddie already knew--for all his bluster and guff, Mike was one of Harrington's too.
xxx
--This is where It turned into the  “failed time stobin time travel AU- but I like this part and you need the above for it to make sense so TWO IN ONE--
xxx
Speed running the beginning is starting to become the easiest part, if only because Steve finally knows exactly what to say.
"They're not a part of the party." He mimics Dustin's voice before pointing a finger at him. "We have exactly sixteen minutes before the damn demobats attack you can fill them in in Eddie's van."
The very same Eddie who looks positively aghast. "You actually believe this?"
"Oh absolutely." Dustin says, scooping his nerd crap into his backpack. "Trust me, Steve's not creative enough to come up with something like this on his own."
"Hey." Steve says in warning.
"Also he only gets bitchy like this when something’s gone really wrong." Dustin ads with a look that might have been apologetic--if one squinted and looked at his face sideways.
Lucas, Steve's new favorite, slides slowly next to him. "You sure you're okay?" He asks quietly and Steve pats him on the shoulder for being the only one to care.
“Not at all.” He answers because fuck, he really, really, isn’t. “In the meantime, I need you all to listen very carefully.”
Mike already has his mouth open, patented bitchy look on his face and nope, no, Steve is not letting him derail this conversation.
He let that happen by accident once and Steve’s learned his lesson since.
Pointing at Mike, Steve starts firing instructions. “Do not, under any circumstance, try to fight the bats. They can and have lifted you right off your feet and I will not be jumping for you again.”
Steve’s finger ticked right, to Lucas. “Luc, I know you have your slingshot and a handful of shit to fling in it. You need to sprint to Eddie’s van, then get set up to start shooting so the rest of us have cover. Got it?”
Lucas, Steve was pleased to see, had already dropped into ‘shit’s fucked’ mode. He nods, his own nerdy gear long packed away. He digs through his backpack now, looking no doubt for the slingshot.
Steve was baking him a damn cake when all this was over.
“Gareth.” He continues, pointing at the next guy down the line, watching as he jumps out of his skin (and then looks mad about it, as if it was Steve’s fault he’d flinched.) “You’re weirdly good at counting the bats, so I’m gonna ask you to keep doing that man. As well as keep an eye out for anything ground level, we got surprised by a demodog last time.”
“Shit, really?” Mike groans, throwing his hands over his eyes in frustration.
He was ignored.
Steve skips over Eddie entirely, knowing all too well how much of a trap addressing him could be. “Grant, you’re best on the radio. Once we are securely in the van I need you to call for Nancy and give her an update on what’s happening.
Grant at least, comes onboard immediately, nodding his head and standing.
He got an absolute look of betrayal from Eddie and Gareth for it, but hey that was yet another thing to be addressed later.
Here, Steve slings his own backpack down and off his shoulders, taking the first thing he has in it, out. “Jeff,” He calls, before holding up the box he’d pulled out. “This is a medkit. You know how to use it, so you get it.”
Steve doesn’t toss the box to him this time, instead putting the kit on the table and sliding it over.
Hesitantly, Jeff takes it, eyes darting between Steve and Eddie.
“And Dustin--” Steve says with an air of finality, yanking the second item he’s been looking for out of his backpack, “take off that damn Weird Al abomination and put this jacket on. For some reason the bats keep locking onto it.”
“They want my shirt?” Dustin asks, but does as told, seeming far too delighted at having been given Steve’s old swim team jacket.
“Uh.” Eddie starts, rising to a hunch over the table, head partially tilted.
Steve was pretty sure he did that because he thought it was intimidating (or at least, perhaps was a bad habit because he did it way more often then he didn’t, but that was a thought for Not In The Beginning of The Mess Steve.)
“We have five minutes left before they attack.” Steve says, right over the second (and far more aggressive) “Uh.”
“The van isn’t locked, which is just so safe considering all the drugs in it, Munson.” He can’t help himself, throws the pissiest, most disapproving look he has in his arsenal at a now gaping Eddie.
“No matter who gets to it first, one but Eddie or myself drive it, understand?”
“Oh so now you’re fine with Eddie’s driving!?” Dustin doesn’t stomp his feet but Steve has known him for a while now.
The foot stomping behavior wasn’t one he grew out of until just last year.
“Considering what we’re about to face yes, absolutely I am.” Steve counters rapidly. “Eddie drives like a demon and that’s exactly what we need right now.”
And oh. He’s going to have to say things like this more, because the shocked look that overtook Munson’s face is delightful.
“I’m taking the rear, because I have the bat.” He holds his weapon, watches as the older members of Hellfire finally seem to register what it is. “Everyone got the plan down?”
“Harrington.” Eddie finally starts, voice positively frigid in fury, and Steve is prepared to mouth what is no doubt the line Eddie’s about to say (much like Dustin, he too rarely deviates lines in the beginning) “What kind of game do you--”
Right on cue, something inhuman screams outside.
The bats are here.
“Bicker later, Munson.” Steve says, locking eyes with Eddie. “Goal for now is to survive.”
xXx
The run to Eddie’s van consistently remains to be one of the worst parts of the entire day (minus the other various parts where someone inevitably bites it, thus resetting the entire damn time loop.)
The initial plan had gone smoothly. Lucas reaches the van first, then uses it as a shield while he provides cover with his slingshot.
The little group of Jeff-Dustin-Grant and Eddie all manage to reach it at about the same time, with Steve able to pull the bats off them with a couple of well timed whacks of the nailbat.
This is where everything goes to shit.
Once again, Mike tries to take the spot of “first to die” by swinging his fist at a low flying bat. The tail of the thing immediately catches his wrist, using the momentum of the movement to swing its teeth towards the freshmen’s face.
Steve reverses direction, and knows immediately he won’t be there in time to prevent an injury.
Curses hard, and winds up to swing, right as Gareth snarls out; “Hell no!”
He’s closer to Mike, and despite already having one bat swooping madly at his head, manages to grab the one attacking Wheeler right as Mike trips over his own feet and falls backwards.
A stream of yells and ‘fuck you!’’s follow as Steve bends to yank Mike up, then carries on as wings beat frantically around Gareth’s head.
The other bat dives, latching onto his hip right as Steve manages to grab the one Gareth’s holding. Takes it from him as Gareth screams, trying desperately to rip the demobat that’s gotten its teeth into him, off.
Practice makes perfect, and perfect in this case, is slamming the fucking demobat onto the concrete hard enough to stun it before slamming it to bits with two hard strikes of the nailbat.
Steve isn’t sure how long it takes him to do it, but between Gareth’s screaming and the shrieks of more incoming bats, he knows he doesn’t have much time.
He’s not losing someone. Not here, right at the start.
Not when he already knows how to play out this part.
Gareth manages to rip the creature off himself, and Steve takes it from there, snatching it out of the younger man’s hands and repeating the fling-and-smash move he killed its brethren with.
Does it fast enough that he’s back at Gareth’s side before the guy starts to collapse downward, tears streaming down his face.
“I’ve got you, you’re okay.” Steve tells him, pulling him close and forcing Gareth to wrap an arm around his shoulders. “Put hard pressure on it man, hard, then we’re gonna run for it.”
“Can’t--fuck---” Gareth pants between hard breaths. Blood’s soaked soaking into his jeans, and a glance at it shows it’s a bad bite.
“You can.” Steve tells him, already pulling them both forward.
It doesn’t go well.
Gareth almost goes down twice, leg buckling, and Steve grits his teeth. Knows neither of them are going to make it at this rate.
“Gary!” Someone screams. He can’t quite tell if it’s Jeff or Eddie, but either way, Mike and Dustin have leapt out of the car, flinging rocks and whatever else they can find into the air.
“Careful!” Steve yells as one nearly belts him, but at least it causes enough of a distraction that he manages to toss the bat ahead of himself, wincing at the sound it makes as it hits the ground.
It’s close to Dustin though, who thankfully, takes his cue and snatches it up.
“Stay!”
It’s a command, and Steve says it like a command. The last thing he needs is for Henderson to go charging into a hoard of demobats, especially not after Steve’s witnessed Eddie dying to them on at least five separate time loops.
If not here, then later.
He can’t think about that now though, not when Gareth’s hissing in pain, fingers clutching onto his shirt like a lifeline.
(He is, he realizes, Gareth’s lifeline. The younger man won’t make it unless Steve gets them to the van.
The bats would take him as their sacrifice and if there is one thing Steve was sworn to stop, it’s people sacrificing themselves--or others.)
“Take a breath.” Steve instructs, before bodily swinging Gareth in front of him.
Ignores the yelped cry he makes, and stoops down to get a good hold around his knees.
Grunts as Gareth, having figured out what’s happening, circles his other hand around Steve’s neck as he lifts the smaller man up into a bridal carry.
Ignores the choked sobs that escape Gareth as he does it. The fucking bat bites hurt and what they’re doing right now is no doubt jostling the shit out of the wound.
He’d be crying too if it were him, not that anyone can pick him up like this.
(Deliberately forgets to recall the two times he’s died precisely because of that.
The knowledge that if he’s injured, the amount of people who can drag him to safety solo is numbering close to zero isn’t a helpful one right now.
Neither is any other thought beyond pure focus on getting Gareth into the van.)
From there it’s a matter of running and not falling on his fucking face--or on the guy currently bleeding on him.
They make it though, a fact Steve is very grateful for.
Hands reach out, all of them pulling Gareth in while Steve hustles the rest, not slowing down until he slams the van door shut and yells for Eddie to gun it.
“Jeff, medkit!” he says, but Jeff, bless him, is already on it.
Grant’s speaking into the walkie he’d been given, Nancy’s tinny voice a soothing balm on Steve’s nerves as he, Dustin and Jeff get Gareth laid out in the van best they can.
“Where am I going, Harrington?” Eddie calls from the front, having floored the van the second the doors had slammed shut.
“He’ll be okay.” Steve soothed quietly, one hand going to squeeze Mike’s shoulder, the other looping around Lucas.
If there’s one thing he swears he will be, through every loop, it’s supportive of the damn kids.
They deserve to know someone is in their corner, even if they don’t always believe him.

these wicked games
Tumblr media
There’s no preamble, no much-needed prelude to soften the blow when Kaz breaks the news to her. "It's been decided," he says simply. “You need to leave Ketterdam. Now.” The words slip out easily enough -- easier than he’d thought they would. And yet, when he finally meets her eyes again, Inej looks nothing short of aghast. “And what, leave you?” she says. “After everything that’s happened?” (So much -- too much -- and yet, once again, they’ve run out of time.) “Yes,” he says simply, because as much as he’d like to, he cannot humor her with the explanation she really deserves, not now. Not when it’s her life on the line, too. But oh -- he’d been foolish, oh-so foolish to think she’d obey his commands without questions. The Wraith was never one to go down without a fight. “No, Kaz,” she hisses out. “I won’t leave you. Not for this.”
OR: My never-before released version of the bathroom scene, adapted for the show. (First daydreamed up during Season 1).
Show!Kanej, you are so loved and will be so incredibly missed 🥺❤️

Chasing Shadows
Tumblr media
chapter 1: a dangerous game (you can read it here) chapter 2:the nightmare unfolds | Viper x fem!reader
I found myself surrounded by an oppressive darkness that seemed to consume all light. It was a suffocating cold that seeped into my bones, leaving me shivering and disoriented. As I stood alone in this abyss, I could hear the haunting echo of footsteps drawing closer. The sound reverberated through the void, a sinister prelude to an unknown presence.
My heart pounded as I strained to see through the inky blackness, but there was nothing to discern, no escape from the frigid emptiness. Then, like a specter materializing from the shadows, a pair of captivating green eyes emerged from the darkness. They fixated on me, and a seductive smile began to play on the lips of the face that materialized in front of me.
The figure, with each step, revealed herself to be Viper. Her gaze held me captive, and she seemed to glide toward me effortlessly, her steps echoing through the void. Her voice, dripping with allure, broke the silence.
"Did you miss me?" Viper's voice purred, and the realization struck me like a bolt of lightning. "Of course you'd miss me!" She continued, her words laced with mockery as she circled me like a predatory specter. I tried to move, to escape, but my body was paralyzed, as if bound by some unseen force.
Viper's fingers danced along the contours of my form, leaving trails of electricity in their wake. I couldn't look away as she moved, each touch more seductive than the last. The nightmarish quality of this encounter was inescapable, a twisted dance in the shadows.
"Uh, the things I could do to you, my sweet little Radiant," Viper whispered in a sultry, enticing tone as she finally came to a stop right in front of me. Her green eyes bore into mine, a dangerous and enigmatic hunger in her gaze.
With a wicked grin, she leaned in closer, her breath a teasing caress on my skin. Her lips brushed against my ear, sending shivers down my spine. "You can't escape, my dear Radiant. This is a realm of my making, and I control every aspect of it." Suddenly green smoke formed around me and Viper. The smoke danced like clouds in the wind and circled us completely. The blackness around me had been replaced by the clouds of green smoke, but Viper still remained clear before my eyes.
Viper's eyes lingered on me, as she stepped forward. Her fingers trailed along my jawline, igniting a tingling sensation that left me wanting more. I tried to resist, to regain control, but her power over me was absolute.
Viper's laughter, like a haunting melody, filled the void. "You've always been so... predictable," she whispered, her voice a sultry purr. "But you and I, we're bound together, aren't we?"
She circled me once more, her touch setting my skin on fire. Her gaze remained fixed upon me, and her green eyes held a dangerous allure. "Tell me, my sweet Radiant, what do you desire? Is it power? Freedom? Or perhaps, something more... intimate?"
My mind raced, torn between the fear of the unknown and a forbidden attraction I couldn't deny. Viper's game was intoxicating. I was at her mercy, and she relished every moment of it.I couldn't help but shudder under her enchanting spell, and a part of me questioned whether this was a mere dream or if it was a manifestation of something deeper, something I had yet to comprehend.
With a boldness I didn't know I possessed, I leaned in, closing the distance between us. The kiss that followed was not a soft, sweet embrace, but a battle of wills and power. The kiss held the tension of the chase, the secrets, and the allure of two powerful beings, each with their own agenda. It was a kiss that told a story of desire and danger, of a perilous game that neither of us was willing to lose. As we broke the electrifying kiss, Viper's eyes held a mixture of satisfaction and challenge.
"I know you want more", whispered Viper and closed the distance again. The game between us continued, and as much as I feared the consequences, I couldn't deny the thrill of the chase and the allure of Viper's presence. The line between adversaries and something more had blurred, and in this tangled web, we were both ensnared in a dance that held the promise of both pleasure and peril.
I awoke with a start, my heart racing and my body drenched in sweat. For a brief, disorienting moment, the remnants of the nightmare clung to me like a shroud. Viper's seductive presence and the alluring dance we had shared in the dream were still fresh in my mind.
But as the haze of the nightmare lifted, a heavy realization washed over me. It was just a dream, a vivid and haunting illusion. The darkness that had engulfed me, the chilling touch, and Viper's tempting words—they were all products of my own subconscious.
I ran a trembling hand through my sweat-soaked hair, my pulse gradually slowing down to a more manageable rhythm. The tingling sensation that had taken root in the pit of my stomach remained.
In the silence of my own room, I couldn't deny the lingering effect of the nightmare.
With a heavy sigh, I pushed the covers off and swung my legs over the side of the bed. I needed a shower.
The hunt for answers, the dangers of the Kingdom Company and the Valorant Team, and the mysteries of my own abilities were far from over. The tingling sensation in my stomach served as a reminder what I had to do:
I have to kill Viper before she finds me.

writing patterns
Thank you for tagging me, @anderstrevelyan and @bhaalsdeepbat <3 I'm tagging @dragon--sage and whoever else publishes fics, my brain is blanking right now lol
Rules: list the first line(s) of your last 10 posted fics and see if there's a pattern!
I absolutely do not have 10 fics published so I'll include one that's near-ready, plus others that are finished but will likely never see the light of day 😂 (If you follow the links, mind the tags on the Durge ones please!)
From most recently written to oldest:
1. Phantasms (BG3, Gale x Lethe, WIP)
The electrum whistle, typically cold to the touch, had grown warm in their hands from their absentminded fondling.
2. There's Something in This Life Left to Live (BG3, Astarion x Aune)
Once upon a time we pressed against an unyielding tree trunk, just like this.
3. In Wicked Wonder (BG3, durge!Aune)
So wet, so sweet.
4. Second Thoughts (BG3, Astarion x durge!Aune)
The druid.
5. Ill at Ease (BG3, Astarion x durge!Aune)
Could she even know what long days were like if this was only the second she could ever remember living?
6. Kindred (I Knew You) (BG3, Astarion x durge!Aune)
Aune watched the purple-robed wizard intently as he fussed through some beached wooden crates.
7. Mar and Naserah (working title, DA:O, unfinished/indefinite hiatus, about my Surana's parents)
He could hear every creak of the wooden boards seconds before he took the step that issued it.
8. Preludes (working title, DA:O, unpublished, Cullen x Surana) (don't judge me. it was very toxic and full of mind games)
He knew he was ruined the moment he first laid eyes on her.
9. Freedom in Dreaming (DA:O, unfinished/indefinite hiatus, Surana longfic)
She knew she was taken when she was young; far younger than most mages are torn from their families.
---
One shy of the full ten! Patterns I can readily see: Introspective, focused on internal thoughts (like most of my writing is, so I'm not surprised); Sensory; Also apparently I like starting with incomplete sentences sometimes. 😂 (Annnnd it looks like I got away from the habit of starting the first sentence with a pronoun, which is great, I guess?)
---
Vixstarria's additional rule: see if you can arrange the lines into a semi-coherent crackfic.
I was gonna give it a try, but about twenty seconds in and my brain was like NOPE 💀

I love how appropriate the Secret levels have been so far to the layers they are found in.
S-1 greets you with a text saying "something wicked this way comes" and locks you in a tight maze with a slender horror that oneshots you. Horror that you can set back if you're lucky, but never stop. Then asks you to survive.
It is introduced in Prelude, the very first "layer" of the game, where V1 first enters Hell. And the rest of the layer is mostly corridors too.
It simply makes a ton of sense why this secret level in on this layer, if you imagine how it would feel, to be a lowly Filth, hearing an approaching sound of Drumm and Base, and how that might compare to being in a dark maze and hearing a eerie wisper. Something v1cked this way comes indeed.
S-2 is simply a vibe check, that fits extremely well with Limbo's initial serene and chill atmosphere.
S-3 is an exploration of existential horror. It is about fighting back against seemingly insurmountable hardship, because overcoming it is worth the struggle. About how even in deepest depth of despair there is a reason to live and strive to live well.
It is placed in the Lust layer. A layer of Hell transformed by its king's determination, from a place of torment and damnation into at least a livable space. Well, it was transformed, until Minos got Gabrieled.
Gluttony is a gauntlet, a test of what you have learned so far, that throws everything Act I has to offer at you. Gabriel too. And, well, entrance to P-1 is here. Need I say more?
Greed is filler /pos and S-4 is a tool of actual torture, but it does play like a fun go lucky platformer.
Wrath is all about revealing the genuine, compassionate, heroic side of Gabriel, and is the most quiet of the Layers. So I expect the upcoming fishing minigame to be rather meditative.
Finally, of course Heresy is fucking brutal, Gabriel is here again and it having a mental breakdown. By far the most violent layer in terms of presentation. P-2 is going to be stationed here. It is going to be something

Four crowning players
In the Game of Life
One became their
Sacrifice
The Watchers took his offer
And they sapped his rite
Now a Watcher
In this Game of Life
-
Three crowning players
In the Game of Life
One found death
Before the light
The Watchers took his omen
To prelude the mines
Poor canary
In this Game of Life
-
Two crowning players
In the Game of Life
One is plagued
With words of spite
The Watchers whisper to him
And he hears their strife
Forced to Listen
In this Game of Life
-
One crowning player
In the Game of Life
Unbound, still
And love despised
The Watchers in her shadows
Where They make Their strides
Oh thee Wicked
In this Game of Life
-
No crowning players
In the Game of Life
Blood be spilt
And death did strike
But hunger of the Watchers
Never satisfied

Reader’s Corner: Ima Koi (Vol. 3), Ghost Reaper Girl (Vol. 2), and Secrets of the Silent Witch
How about some sci-fi? This week, we cover the recent release of Your Forma, joining a host of other recommended series, including the newly released volume of romance Ima Koi, hyperviolent game adaptation, SINoALICE, and the charming light novel, The Holy Grail of Eris.
-----
My Maid, Miss Kishi, Manga Vol. 1
I know everyone is going on and on about that soap romance manga, but with My Maid, Miss Kishi, I wonder if I’ve actually found something better, perhaps the sweetest manga to have premiered in 2022. Billionaire Kiichiro Hayase is adored by the public and his extensive staff of maids, but there’s something peculiar about this magnate—he is clumsy beyond belief. Like seriously, seriously clumsy, knocking down anything within a 25-foot radius and turning a suit into a head wrap when trying to put it on. But there’s one guiding light that helps him literally stay on his feet—his favorite maid, Miss Kishi, who seemingly does everything well. In fact, she’s so helpful that Hayase tries his best to show her that he appreciates her, but all his attempts seem to fall flat. She must not enjoy serving such an absent-minded man, he believes. Or does she? There’s so much sweetness in this initial volume, and plenty of humor as well (plus extra points for a Nausicaa reference!). Kishi and Hayase are such a great match, an “all grown up” version of those youthful romcoms where the boy just doesn’t get it, and particularly reminiscent of Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun. I could not get enough of these first few chapters. And though the artwork starts out rough, it quickly improves, joining the excellence of the rest of the tale, which—unlike its male protagonist—isn’t clumsy at all. The story is more like Kishi—quite perfect indeed. ~ Twwk
My Maid, Miss Kishi is published by Kodansha.
The Holy Grail of Eris, Light Novel Vol. 2
Hey, just chiming in to say this volume is a delight, much like its predecessor. As a reminder, the “wicked” Scarlett was executed ten years ago at age sixteen for attempted murder (except she was framed), and she wants revenge. The murder mystery remains central to the plot—on whom should spectral Scarlett, via corporeal confederate Connie, exact vengeance? We learn much on that front, but the mystery of Scarlett’s demise soon snowballs, becoming a crucial thread in a larger tapestry of crime, corruption, and cloak-and-dagger political intrigue. The two leads remain charming, as does the awkward fake-engagement-you-know-is-turning-into-real-relationship between Connie and the stoic detective Randolph. The mystery is engaging, with lots of payoffs for previous foreshadowing. And as with the first volume, each chapter ends with a set of hilarious, evolving character profiles. I’m eager to see where this series goes next. ~ JeskaiAngel
The Holy Grail of Eris is published by Yen Press.
Your Forma, Light Novel Vol. 1
Although I enjoy science fiction, I typically don’t like sci-fi manga or light novels, which tend to lean so hard on the typical anime-style tropes that the themes and tones of the genre don’t appear with any type of consistency or depth. Enter Your Forma, which nicely balances light novel features like the tsundere archetype with a bit more seriousness. This allows the series to explore ideas such as the border between human and A.I. The deftness with which volume one walks this line reminds me of how The Executioner and Her Way of Life does the same with fantasy. Both series also share a common beginning: a prelude pointing at something wondrous and dreamlike, followed by an initial episode showing the main character—for Your Forma, that’s electronic investigator Echika Hieda—to be violent and transcendent in her work. Echika is so good at diving into others’ memories for criminal investigations, in fact, that she’s partnered with the only being able to keep up with her, a cheeky A.I. named Harold Lucraft. The relationship between the two is central to the piece, following a much-tread path of “human who hates A.I. learns about humanity from said robot,” but developed through extensive dialogue that feels genuine, as if we’re privy to conversations actually occurring. The science fiction elements are realistic as well, including the titular technology. “Your Forma” is an implant that most humans have during the time the story is set (it’s actually the modern period but in an alternate universe): the implant floods them with all sorts of information, but also allows investigators like the main duo to dive into their memories. That becomes important when a “virus” gets into the units of a number of victims. The science feels solid and realistic, and there’s much to explore about the technology, including volume one’s philosophical question: how human we really are when all the information we receive is cultivated for our own preferences? (How pertinent for today!) The ending, unfortunately, doesn’t quite land what was an extraordinary tale to that point—all the pieces that are supposed to come together feel a little forced, requiring too much explanation. But it’s not terrible either, and with the strength of the story’s other fabric, I think I’ve found another long-term read for me. A potentially great science fiction light novel series? I’m all in. ~ Twwk
Your Forma is published by Yen Press.
SINoALICE, Manga Vol. 1
You know it’s a classy series when it features a suicide scene with a panty shot. Okay, maybe that’s not the fairest way to introduce SINoALICE (the manga based on the popular mobile game), but it does convey what you’re getting with this shrink-wrapped volume: lots of fanservice and tons of violence, oftentimes blended together. Alice, a “normal girl” (as she often asserts), is involved in a relationship with one of her teachers. So is her friend. This situation leads to the previously-mentioned (and other violence), but the next day, Alice wakes without much memory of what happened. Soon she dives into another, even more violent event—this one full of gore and of a most graphic nature. Although I tend not to support art of this nature (some of our writers trend differently), even I have to admit that the artwork is elaborative and brilliant. Another high point of this volume is the mystery of exactly what’s going on—very little has been revealed by the end of volume one: Alice has displayed some type of power and teamed with two other girls, one named Snow (setting the stage for a fable/fairy tale connection in the series) and another as yet unnamed. Is all this enough to tempt me into reading volume two when it publishes? As I noted, these types of series take me to a bad place emotionally and spiritually, so I’m likely finished with SINoALICE—though if you aren’t as affected by such material as I am, this beautifully illustrated tale might be to your liking. ~ Twwk
SINoALICE is published by Square Enix.
Ima Koi: Now I’m in Love, Manga Vol. 3
“Even pointless things can be fun as long as we’re doing them together.” If I could sum up the series of Ima Koi: Now I’m in Love, but specifically volume three, in a single line, it would be this one from Satomi. Her story continues to be calming and refreshing, even if some could argue it hits all the traditional shojo “beats” with nothing new. Much of this volume covers how Satomi and Yagyu prepare for and look forward to spending time together at the school festival, and a new guy comes on the scene who stirs up jealousy in Yagyu. Thankfully, this new character doesn’t enter the story too early on, as I confess had some reservations starting this volume. Since I felt the previous volume had quite a bit of unnecessary drama that really stole the spotlight from this precious couple, I was concerned it would reoccur again in this one. However, those reservations were unfounded, as this volume captures everything I love about this couple and more! Their determination to do things together really warms my heart, as does how they continue to ask each other questions about their wants and likes. There might be a new guy on the scene who has me nervously questioning if he might try to interfere later on, but Satomi’s words continue to ring true: she really only has eyes for Yagyu. I am eagerly looking forward to the release of volume four and continue to highly recommend this series to those who are looking for a casual and sweet romance with amazing art! ~ Laura A. Grace

Shortcake Cake, Manga Vol. 6
After Chiaki kissing Ten at the end of volume five, I’m not even going to deny it. Chiaki was super in the doghouse! I was so upset that he kissed her knowing that she likes Riku, but somehow, someway, in volume six Chiaki redeemed himself and I no longer feel he is in the said doghouse he has been in. (I deeply appreciated Ten’s directness and even a conversation they have later on about her feelings for Riku.) However, helloooooo feels train for #TeamRiku! Ten and Riku go on a few outings together in this volume and I pretty much internally squealed while reading! They are so absolutely adorable as they went out shopping for decorations for a surprise birthday party and later on a special outing that resulted in me being completely giddy! I think this volume has to be my favorite yet and not just because I’m seeing my two favorite characters grow closer, but Ten’s internal dialogue is sooooo incredibly accurate that’s it’s almost bizarre! (I honestly kept getting flashbacks of me in high school and the crushes I had!) I was definitely bummed at the end when Riku and Ten were having a very important conversation only for another housemate (not Chiaki) to interrupt at the most critical part! Gah! Once again, I am completely desperate for the next volume to see what happens next and if their conversation will continue over to the beginning of volume seven! ~ Laura A. Grace

Secrets of the Silent Witch, Light Novel Vol. 1
Monica is a prodigy at math and magic, and by age seventeen her genius has earned her the elite title of Sage. Her moniker, “The Silent Witch,” is a reference to her unique knack for using magic without chanting incantations. Of course, Monica cultivated this skill because she also has severe social anxiety and struggled to speak in front of people. Now she lives as a recluse, until one day she finds herself dragooned into going undercover as a student at an academy for nobles. Her mission: protect Prince Felix from unspecified threats. This volume is part mathemagical mystery and part school story. The mystery seemed a little too easy to solve, and overall this volume felt like the introductory chapter of a larger story. We get hints about Monica’s traumatic past, there are strong indications that there’s more to Felix than meets the eye, and at least one other character struck me as having secrets yet to be revealed. Monica’s fondness for math, combined with the mystery elements, reminded me a little of the old “Mathnet” segments of the classic PBS show Square One. I enjoyed this volume enough that I’ll keep reading, but I wouldn’t say it’s a must-read unless you’re pining for a mathematically inclined protagonist. ~ JeskaiAngel
Secrets of the Silent Witch is published by Yen Press.
Ghost Reaper Girl, Manga Vol. 2
With slapstick humor and violence wrapped up into a horror-action series, Ghost Reaper Girl feels like a manga version of a Sam Raimi film. And indeed, at its best, it assaults you with that mix of genres, making wonderful use of Chloe’s background as a failing horror movie actress and some of the most breathtaking illustrations in shonen manga. Volume two really dives into these elements, making it a much stronger entry than the initial volume (at least once it gets past its boring stay at the ghost hunting office where Chloe meets her director, receives her official codename—hint: we as readers all knew it before she did—and becomes an official member of Arkham Bullet). The fun begins in her first mission, though, in which she runs across some not-so-friendly teammates who would rather turn her into an undead hunter of ghosts than be of assistance. Yes, we get a zombie storyline already, and it moves in an unexpected direction—more toward the emotional and less toward the eating of brains (though George Romero gets a shout-out). There continue to be concerns, though. I’m not attached to any of the characters outside of Chloe, her “skill” isn’t particularly distinguishable, and the storyline of this arc is unoriginal. But the fun of volume two is enough to keep me coming back to this ghost-busting (ghost-reaping?) series. ~ Twwk
Ghost Reaper Girl is published by Viz Media. [Editor’s note: I like this series, too! ~ NegativePrimes]

“Just coming back from the bar?” (for charles!)
“Gah--”
Charles flinched and stopped in his tracks. Claire.  Of course she knew he’d slipped out. He could skirt around everyone in this bloody house except Erik another telepath. Charles sucked in a breath, trying to still his skittish heart. So she’d caught him. Alright, not the end of the world. He could talk his way out of this. He used to be good at that.
“I, ah...” Charles fumbled. Right, good at this. “I needed some fresh air. This old house, it’s rather stuffy at times.”

Berlin: The Wicked City (2019) explores the intersection of hedonism, decadence, artistic expression and horror (both supernatural and all too human) in Germany’s Weimar Republic. In doing this, it winds up being one of the very best sourcebooks I’ve encountered, for Call of Cthulhu, or any RPG, honestly. Its just so relentlessly useful. It’s authors know what you need: detail, but those that make for the construction of interesting games. Too often (like the Call of Cthulhu “Secrets of” line of regional sourcebooks) books like this are full of dry history a GM is going to struggle to find a use for and profiles of notable people most players will never encounter. Not so here, where daily life and culture is the focus. This book constructs a Berlin that players will explore.
Which is to say, it is a Berlin full of both beauty and atrocity. While a haven for queer folk and artists of the time, it was also a place were drug abuse, sexual exploitation and racism ran rampant. It was, after all, a city in free fall, where the fabric of society was unraveling in prelude to one of Europe’s darkest chapters. The book presents both sides of the coin in balance. Wicked City’s treatment of queer culture is on par with Harlem Unbound’s treatment of race and for that alone the book should be on every Keeper’s shelf. But it is also sourcebook for a horror game that tackles mature subject matter without flinching, so think honestly about your group’s comfort level before introducing the setting.
Included are three scenarios, all rich with symbolism and themes that connect them to the social and political currents of their historical moment. Each feels like a distinct sort of horror and each covers unusual ground for CoC. The potential twist in “Dances of Vice, Horror and Ecstacy” is particularly daring. I’d say more but maybe just find someone to run them for you.
As with most of Chaosium’s recent publications, this one is gorgeous through and through. I particularly like the cover art, and that sweet King in Yellow.

ahhhh omg that jouno lowkey confession suegiku angst killed me i have no idea if your asks are open or not but could u do a tecchou pov realizing like what he meant after jouno’s “death” (i refuse to believe he’s actually dead ahaha)
have tecchou having an existential crisis when he realises jouno got his ass sliced and diced and burnt and bit.
also made tecchou consider being an evil little wrong-doer as a treat.
here is the jouno related post of this piece
im sorry this is short but i couldn't expand any more than this so pls make do.
Tumblr media
Tecchou didn’t think anything of Jouno’s odd question until recently.
The idea of Jouno wanting to redeem himself naturally never occurred to him, mostly because after the night he had asked Tecchou about his black-and-white perspective on good and evil, he proceeded to threaten to burn and hang a little girl’s carcass to lure the detective agency out of their little hole. In a sense, it was a fool-proof plan, if only it didn’t threaten the life and innocence of a ten year old.
Telling him off and Jouno attempting to explain himself and fight was routine, even if it did piss Tecchou off every time— it was just Jouno being himself, and besides, Tecchou can’t really recall a time when Jouno ever won a battle on the basis of sheer physical prowess.
So it never struck him as odd when the commander pulled Jouno aside for whatever reason. Tecchou just assumed that in the heat of the situation they were in, there was probably something important and urgent.
But regardless of how busy and distracted Tecchou was, the events of last night kept nagging him in the back of his mind like a prelude of a very, very, very unfortunate tragedy that was soon to happen.
Tecchou only felt something was amiss when Fukuchi returned without Jouno on his tail like when he had left. Even then, Tecchou didn’t get the chance to ask about the odd disappearance for he was already given a new order that drove his mind away from Jouno… again.
In hindsight, Tecchou really wishes he paid more attention to the blood smears on the tips of Fukuchi’s boots. He wishes he paid a little more heed to what Jouno was saying last night, because if he had, he would have realised that him trusting anyone other than himself to determine what justice is is the reason he’s the government tool that he is: something to be picked apart, remodelled, and put back together at the convenience of his puppeteers, and at his own will, too.
How foolish.
He lost the very day he agreed to work for this God-forsaken government, and he finally understands why Jouno never liked them in the first place and how he was right about them being just as wicked as any other self-serving criminal organisation. In fact, Tecchou thinks that criminals might as well be less twisted than the government he’s serving, because at least they’re true to their essence— don’t hide their villainy under the false pretense of laws and justice and commit to what they believe, they’re pure.
Jouno’s pure, in the sickest sense of the word.
Fukuchi, the man who promised Tecchou a life of fulfillment under the condition that he just do as he’s told, the man who might as well be the most unfortunate victim of the corrupt government, is the one who’s subjecting Tecchou to the same fate he had to endure: treating his soldiers like pieces in his game and tossing the ones that don’t serve purpose anymore.
He can see it all very clearly. Tecchou understands why Jouno was the way that he was and did what he did— even envies him for it, because he wonders how liberating it must feel to believe in no one but yourself, even if Tecchou’s beliefs and morals didn’t line up with Jouno’s— he admires the process.
He wishes Jouno would spring back to life and call him disgusting for his superficiality once again, would shake his head with a scoff at Tecchou narrating the rules of law like he couldn’t believe the man could get any dumber. He supposes he is a little embarrassed now that he realises he played right into their grimey little hands.
He wishes he could admit it to Jouno, wishes he could implement his moral realignment without being a coward fearing change…
…but instead with shaky hands pointed the tip of his sword at him under the order of his commander, wondering if he ever had anything to stand for.

Shuntarou Chishiya x Reader
(Property)
~~~
Kind of a continuation of Swimsuits. Scumbag!Perv!Chishiya. Some Niragi. Possessive Chishiya. The usual asshole ness you get from him YIKES.
Does he sound like a yandere or is he too lazy for that—
~~~
You liked Kuina, you really did. But the thing that annoyed you the most about her was the fact that she never tries to stop Chishiya’s shenanigans. The other night, he had given you the order to go to his room and warm his bed. If it was just you, Chishiya, and Kuina, it wouldn’t have been so bad. You could have just punched him in the face and call it a day. But because you were in front of ALL his subordinates, including some guys from the military core, you had to grit your teeth and follow orders to avoid being made an example out of.
Chishiya was never above making a statement. Especially to the Beach.
“I don’t want to be his enemy.” Kuina said to you. You both were sharing a lounge chair by the pool while everyone partied. With shirts flying off, and people dancing and grinding against each other in the pool of alcohol, it was easy to get lost in the crowd.
“I don’t either.” You said back.
“Oh, come on. We both know you’re far from it.”
“You’re right.” You said quietly. You looked down into your glass of red wine, seeing what was left of you in the reflection.
“I’m his bitch.”
Kuina opened her mouth only to snap it shut. What could she say? Without lifting so much as a finger, Chishiya had you under his control. He was cunning with a sharp knife for a tongue. A king of deception and you his lowly slave. Why he chose you, you’d never know. And you don’t plan on figuring out why anytime soon.
“I’m sorry.” Kuina finally said. But you shook your head. It could have been worse. You could have been dead.
In the end, you didn’t know which was the better fate.
~~~
“Oh, lookie who we have here!”
At the sound of his voice, annoyance spiked up your veins into your head, causing it to throb. You guessed it was the prelude to a headache.
Taking a sip from your wine, you rolled your eyes. “What do you want, Niragi?”
“Hmm? I can’t say hi to pretty girl?” He said taking a seat next to you. He had his gun with him, of course. When did he not? If Aguni wasn’t around, you would have guessed that his sniper rifle was his love. But then again, he wouldn’t have had that weapon if it wasn’t for Aguni.
“Hi. Now go away.”
“Don’t be like that, (Y/n). Besides, I hardly see you without that brat around. It’s nice to see you as a person for once.”
At that you scoffed. But not in a dismissive way, but because you weren’t sure if people at the Beach still regarded you as a human. No one talked to you— you were off limits. Your world since entering the Borderlands comprised of death, alcohol, and Chishiya.
“It’s nice that someone still sees me as a person.”
“It’s not that hard too. Seeing that most of the people here’s lost their humanity to the games.”
You hummed. “What about you. Are you still a person?”
Niragi looked to the sea of lost souls, desperate to forget their impending doom in this hellish nightmare.
“I never was.”
You’ve never seen Niragi like this. Most of the time he was maniacal, barely lucid. Or maybe he’s been sober this whole time. Either way, Niragi was always in his own world of psychotic fantasies and high off of the control he has as Aguni’s lap dog. Seeing Niragi without that condenscending smirk for once made you wonder if he was better than Chishiya. If he did have a little humanity left in him.
Or had he gone mad like everyone else at the Beach.
“And exactly what do you think you’re doing, (Y/n).”
Cursing under your breath, you downed the rest of your drink and looked up to your executive, Chishiya. His stance was normal, laid back and uninterested. The only thing that alarmed you about his sudden presence was that he wasn’t adorning his usual Cheshire smirk. Instead his eyebrow ticked north, his eyes narrowed at you with a grim line on his lips. It was nice to see him wear a new expression. What wasn’t nice was that his new expression was focused on you.
You sat up straighter. “I was just having a drink.”
“I thought I gave you orders.”
“I did what you asked. It’s not my fault the damn bedsheets get cold after a while.”
His glare moved from you to Niragi. “Doesn’t matter. Room, now.”
You moved to get up, but a hand gripping your wrist stopped you from going anywhere.
“She’s not your property, Chishiya.” Niragi said, tugging you back down. At this, Chishiya grew more displeased.
“Oh? But she is my subordinate.”
“Yeah but that doesn’t mean she belongs to you.”
At first, you thought that Niragi was on your side. Until you felt the barrel of his sniper pressed against your neck.
“She can die just like the rest of them. She’s not just yours anymore. She belongs to the Borderlands now.”
Niragi met your shocked expression with a wicked grin. Bold of you to assume he was on your side. He pressed the gun harder into your neck making you grimace. You were wrong earlier, when you thought he still had some humanity left in him. Turns out Niragi was the maddest of them all.
Shoving him and his gun away, you got up to join Chishiya. Chishiya’s face relaxed into his usual Cheshire smirk, aiming it at a flailing Niragi recovering from your sudden shove.
“She may not be my property. But her loyalty lies with me.” Chishiya said almost triumphantly. He wrapped an arm around your waist before turning you both in the direction of the hotel. “Now let’s go. It seems that my bed has gotten cold.”
