Did you read Jim Powell's FDR's Folly? If so, what were your thoughts on his conclusions?

I have not read Jim Powell's FDR's Folly: How Roosevelt and His New Deal Prolonged the Great Depression (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO), believe it or not! I don't even think I have a copy of it!

I can recommend checking our Mr. Powell's book, Wilson's War: How Woodrow Wilson's Great Blunder Led to Hitler, Lenin, Stalin, and World War II (BOOK | KINDLE), and thought it was interesting. I'm no fan of Woodrow Wilson and think he's vastly overrated by many historians, but I can't say I agree with Powell's opinion that Wilson was the worst President in American history.

house md wildest show on earth. a main character outright assassinates a known dictator, a moment that would be the very beginning or the mid-series crisis in any other show - an act which creates a power vacuum in a foreign nation already filled with child soldiers and genocide, and it's literally only brought up again throughout the season because that guy's wife divorces him over it. and occasionally to explore his relationship with who he is as a person and a catholic after having deliberately taken a life for what he calculates as the greater good, but mostly it's about his divorce

I almost can't believe I finished this drawing! I posted the WIP months and months ago, it might have been on the old blog even. I really like the final result though! I hope I can finish the fic soon too, it's different from my "usual Sladick" as it's set on Earth-3, and I'm having lots of fun with it.

i think about their relationship a lot okay

when terry is 15 he tries out for the high school soccer team. he doesn't really care if he gets on the team or not, but he thought it would be fun to try. And Grant was trying out too so there was really no downside to it. Ron gets there early to pick him up from tryouts. (He had promised himself when he legally adopted TJ that he would always be on time. Never leave TJ wondering if he had been forgotten). He caught the tail end of the coach screaming at the kids. Ron knew it motivated some kids. he knew it could be an effective tactic. So he clenches his fists and sets his jaw, trying not to lose it. This doesn't last very long. when the coach screams directly at Terry, Ron sees red. "Stampler could you be any more useless?! Get your ass out-" the coach doesn't get the rest of his words out before Ron is in his face, so suddenly that the coach actually stumbles back. "don’t you dare call him useless" ron screams at him. actually red with anger. Darryl had shown up then. also early cause he promised Grant he wouldn't embarrass him but its Darryl so of course he showed up early. he pulls Ron off the coach. Ron almost punches him. "Terry i'll be in the car" He says gruffly. Not wanting to embarrass his son but also so angry at the coach he can barely see straight. it scared him. When terry gets in the car about ten minutes later, Ron has only calmed slightly. "sorry" he mumbles, genuinely. "Didn't mean to lose my temper like that" Terry shrugs "'salright. the coach is a dick anyways. I'd rather keep playing for Darryl anyways" Ron nods, and they sit in silence for a few more minutes. “You're not useless." Ron says out of nowhere. "You know that right?" Terry smiles, looking out the window "Yes Dad, i know" And finally, Ron relaxes a bit.

Apparently we’re going to be seeing more of Hobie’s universe and I am SO pumped about that because I have so many questions about how they’ll change it from the official comics, because a lot of Hobie’s universe is so intrinsically American that I can’t wait to see how it changes.

See, Spider-Punk’s universe is one where Norman Osborn became president by either creating artificial copies of or allying with Symbiotes (like Venom), dubbing them Variable Engagement Neuro-sensitive Organic Mesh, or V.E.N.O.M, both bonding with them himself and distributing them to cops and law enforcement everywhere to create super soldiers who could, and in his own words, “Make America Great Again.” His introductory comic depicts this in four pages (one of them a two page spread) where it shows Hobie and his band leading a riot against a wave of cop-Symbiotes called the Thunderbolt Department and using 5,000 watts worth of amps blasting punk music to vaporize the Symbiotes (being weak to loud noises), then personally bashing Norman Osborn’s skull in with his guitar.

Obviously while cops are fucking fascists everywhere, the symbolism of “Make America Great Again” is, well, quintessentially American, so I think it’s pretty clear some of the rhetoric will change, and I really can’t wait to see how it will, honestly. As well, when Hobie says “I hate the PM”, he can be seen tearing a poster of not Norman Osborn, but Kingpin, indicating that he likely is this universe’s equivalent to President Osborn.

As well, his teammates/the Spider-Band are also worth examining, and I really, really can’t wait to see what’s done with them, especially Karl Morningdew.

Karl Morningdew, AKA Captain Anarchy, is obviously intrinsically connected to Captain America, as his universe’s equivalent, but also because he’s Native American, specifically named as the Sentinel of the Cowlitz People. He’s got a not-a-superhero boyfriend named Rick, but that’s not important to this conversation. He’s obviously pretty tied to America, not just in his being very obviously a variant of Captain America with the same powers, but also because his people have lived in America before there was an America to live in, and their oppression by the American government is inextricable to his character. So how they will, or, I suppose, if they will, translate Karl into a British setting is obviously a big question! While not as intrinsically tied to an American identity, he has other teammates who are variants of other Marvel universe characters; Riri Williams, AKA Ironheart, is known as Riotheart in this universe, Mattea Murdock, AKA the Daredevil Drummer of Philly, a counterpart to Daredevil, Kamala Khan, who seems to be pretty much the same + brass knuckles, (will she have her powers changed to fit the new Ms. Marvel show?), and Robert “Robbie” Bruce Banner, a reluctant member of the team who doesn’t actually really want to be there, having tried to give up on that part of his life.

I really, really hope these guys show up, I want to see how they translate these very American characters into the UK, and I think, frankly, they’re really cool and fun!

Happy Presidents Day! It's time for the results of the annual Presidential Greatness Project Expert Survey

So here are the five best and five worst presidents according to the 2024 survey. BTW, Grover Cleveland only gets counted once for this survey.

Here are the historians' collective rankings for the top five and bottom five.

I'm fully in agreement with #1 and #45.

Lincoln, FDR, and Washington are in an exclusive group of greatness by themselves. Trump is in an exclusive group of odium all by himself. The ghosts of James Buchanan and Andrew Johnson are undoubtedly pleased that thanks to Trump, they'll never need to worry again about being considered the worst ever POTUS.

Some other tidbits from the survey.

Jimmy Carter (#22 overall) was chosen as the most underrated POTUS.

John F. Kennedy (#10 overall) was chosen as the most overrated.

The biggest rise in the rankings was by Barack Obama who rose 9 places since 2015.

The biggest decline goes to Andrew Jackson who tumbled 12 places since 2015.

Joe Biden is at #14 overall – in between John Adams and Woodrow Wilson. Though Biden is essentially tied with Adams; both having received scores of 62.66 points.

The ratings average which Republican historians gave to Biden (47.69) was significantly higher than the ratings average which Democratic historians gave to Trump (6.66). No, I didn't make up that 666. 👿

It's only history scholars who participated in this survey. They tend to take a longer view than most of us.

My biggest disagreements are that I would have placed Gerald Ford and John Quincy Adams higher and George W. Bush much lower.
