Some differences between the translations in Chapter 105.

The older translator seems to have found M. de Villefort's thoughts about cemeteries a bit disrespectful:

M. de Villefort, parisien pur, regardait le cimetière du Père-Lachaise comme le seul digne de recevoir la dépouille mortelle d'une famille parisienne; les autres lui paraissaient des cimetières de campagne, des hôtels garnis de la mort. Au Père-Lachaise seulement un trépassé de bonne compagnie pouvait être logé chez lui.

M. de Villefort, a true Parisian, considered the cemetery of Pere–la–Chaise alone worthy of receiving the mortal remains of a Parisian family; there alone the corpses belonging to him would be surrounded by worthy associates.

M. de Villefort, a pure Parisian, considered the Père-Lachaise cemetery the only one worthy of receiving the mortal remains of a Parisian family. The others appeared to him like country cemeteries, death's lodging-houses. Only in the Père-Lachaise could the respectable departed be accommodated at home.

I don't often say this when the translators disagree on the meaning of a passage, but in this case I think the older translator might have a better grasp of what Dumas is saying:

C'étaient presque tous des jeunes gens que la mort de Valentine avait frappés d'un coup de foudre, et qui, malgré la vapeur glaciale du siècle et le prosaïsme de l'époque, subissaient l'influence poétique de cette belle, de cette chaste, de cette adorable jeune fille enlevée en sa fleur.

ive been binging lately so i wanted to make a ranking so far of all the ones i’ve read. i have soo many more to get through still. my precious bookmarks. these are all my faves, i could read them literally whenever. i wish i could get them printed. my first tattoo ever (15 rs of age and very stupid but full of love for the world) was inspired from presque toujours pur because of the relationship between regulus and sirius. i found it so compelling, i still do. i have to say, reading ptp kind of ruined me forever for my current snape-hating agenda.

1. presque toujours pur, x hermione is actually from the Noble House of Black

2. risk-reward ratio, x draco surrenders after the manor and held as a PoW, redemption

3. upper body injury, x muggle au where draco is a hockey player, idk this is just like so perfect and cute. i always wait until i forget what happens so i can read it again like it’s the first time

4. the watergaw, x draco rescues hermione at the manor but they apparate to the wilderness with no wand and no way to call for help

5. from wiltshire with love, x draco goes turncoat and hermione is a bamf, Ootp strategies and war tactics, optimistic ending, feel-good soul food, hard going and dark but pays off at the end

En fait, Engels est très dur avec les voyous du sous-prolétariat, en soulignant leur absence totale de conscience de classe, leur immoralité, leur volatilité, leur paresse... qui les rendent incapables de mener une lutte organisée, et donc de s'unir aux ouvriers du prolétariat pour mener une révolution fondée sur l'émancipation par le travail et le partage de la richesse issue du travail.

En fait, en guise d'exemple Engels s'appuie sur une révolution italienne avortée de 1848 : les lazzaroni, les voyous napolitains, ont fait le coup de poing contre les révolutionnaires au côté de la soldatesque par pur opportunisme et ont largement contribué à la défaite des révoltés. Le sous-prolétariat est violent, par habitude, presque par nature selon Engels, et le patronat l'utilise volontiers, l'utilise en fait assez régulièrement pour briser des grèves en allant embaucher n'importe qui pour remplacer des grévistes, par exemple. C'est assez typique.

La rumeur populaire veut que les voyous de banlieue s'en sortent plutôt bien par rapport à l'ouvrier moyen ou au petit-bourgeois en plein déclassement ; que les dégradations répétées de leur environnement coûtent cher au contribuable alors que les petits-jeunes-des-cités touchent des aides de l'État en se contentant de dealer et commettre divers délits pour lesquels ils ne sont jamais vraiment punis. En l'occurrence, il se dit que la police ferme largement les yeux sur les émeutes, surtout par rapport à la répression massive des derniers mouvements sociaux. Je ne pense pas qu'Engels aurait tenu un discours très différent. Je sais que Lénine aurait voulu taper sur la tête des LFistes à grands coups de gourdin, par contre.

Ce qu'il y a de certain, c'est que la droite et l'extrême-droite ont toujours su exploiter la racaille à leurs fins, la seconde peut-être plus encore que la première, parce que les fachos et assimilés ont toujours pu compter sur l'appétit de violence des déclassés (à Lyon, les fafs défilent cette nuit façon milice en braillant des Bleu ! Blanc ! Rouge ! La France aux Français !) mais aussi parce que c'est assez facile de passer des marchés avec des trafiquants.

Bon j’ai écrit ce texte il y a deux jours. Et malheureusement ou heureusement il s’est supprimé de mes notes, alors je dois le ré-ecrire. 

C’est la première fois ou j’écris un texte alors que je fréquente l’édit garçon qui le concerne.

Nous nous sommes rencontrés un dimanche ensoleillé. 

A partir du jour où nous nous sommes rencontrés, nous nous sommes un peu adoptés, plus quittés, dévorés.

A.  Le jour où nous nous sommes rencontrés, nous avons erré dans les rues de Paris pendant des heures, à marcher, nous promener, lessiver les terrasses de café à discuter et à regarder les gens passer. 

Ca faisait longtemps que je ne m’étais pas sentie aussi bien avec un garçon.  A. est particulier. 

A. est beau. 

A. n’est pas beau comme un garçon à dévorer. Il est beau, simplement beau. Il ne fait pas partie des garçons sur lesquels je me serais retournée dans la rue mais il est simple, doux, délicat, dur et ferme. 

Nous nous ressemblons beaucoup. Nous sommes tous les deux grands, les yeux bleus, les cheveux longs blonds.  Il porte le même nom de famille que ma meilleure amie. Je joue souvent à lui dire qu’il est son cousin. Lorsque nous ne sommes pas ensemble, cela se traduit par un enfer agréable : il m’harcèle de message un jour puis, plus rien le lendemain.  A. est simple, pur, poli, généreux, courtois, facile, élégant.  A. est complexe, triste, dur, profond, noir, fragile.  Je me souviens encore, un jour quand il m' a dis "C., j'ai rarement vu une personne avec autant de prestance, autant d'élégance. Et en même temps tu pues le sexe". Nous nous sommes vus presque tous les jours pendant une période. Lorsque nous avons couché la première fois ensemble. C’était relativement explosif - ca faisait également longtemps que je n'avais pas attendu aussi longtemps avant de coucher (avec un type.) Je me souviens, avoir passé une nuit entière avec lui, à jouir. Puis de 8 heures du matin à 15 heures, nous nous sommes ensuite décidés à sortir parce que nous devions manger. Nos corps étaient meurtris par le sexe.  Nous avons eu quelques soirées et week-end comme celui-là. Sur une échelle de T. A. est juste à côté. Pas le même sexe. Je crois que j’aurais toujours celui de T. comme ma référence ultime.  Mais A. m’a fait véritablement jouir. Ce qui n’est clairement pas donné à tous les hommes (juste à T. en fait). A ce moment même ou j'écris, je me rends compte que j'ai passé 4 ans avec F. que j'ai aimé, sans jamais avoir ce sentiment, cette connexion que l'on peut avoir avec un personne - en une nuit. A. me fait sourire, rire et jouir.  A. est trop triste pour moi. Ce qui m’embête avec lui, c’est qu’il est trop intense et trop émotionnel. C’est-à-dire que j’ai constamment l’impression qu’il attend de moi que je le sauve de sa propre situation. C’est un garçon que j’aime beaucoup. J’ai des sentiments pour lui. 

Je ne sais pas encore à quelle hauteur et je pense que je vais devoir l’oublier.  J’essaie de prendre mes distances. A. est trop pour moi. A. - Tu es formidable.  Prends soin de toi.  Je t’embrasse.  04-23
