Congrats to the ultimate winner of the Hot & Vintage Movie Men Tournament, Mr. Toshiro Mifune! May he live happily and well where the sun always shines, enjoying the glories of a battle hard fought.
Tumblr media
A loving farewell to all of our previous contestants, who are now banished to the shadow realm and all its dark joys and whispered horrors—I hear there's a picnic on the village green today. If you want to remember the fallen heroes, you can find them all beneath the cut.
What happens next? I'll be taking a break of two weeks to rest from this and prep for the Hot & Vintage Ladies Tournament. I'll still be around but only minimally, posting a few last odes to the hot men before transitioning into a little early ladies content, just like I did with this last tournament. The submission form for the Hot & Vintage Ladies tournament will remain up for one more week (closing February 21st), so get your submissions in for that asap! Once the form closes, there will be one more week of break. The first round of the Hot & Vintage Ladies Tournament will be posted on February 29th, as Leap Year Day seems like a fitting allusion to leaping into these ladies' arms.
Thanks for being here! Enjoy the two weeks off, and send me some great propaganda.

MINOR CHARACTER MARCH MADNESS
Tumblr media
Get ready for a March Madness Tournament for all the kid characters who exist only in the background, or only once, or just not nearly enough times in South Park. Each poll will last a day, with multiple polls going every day (at least for the start). I tried my best to pick truly minor characters but if you think one isn't minor enough or are sad I forgot one... sorry I don't feel like rearranging the entire tournament at this point 😅
Each character has been sorted into seeds 1-16 based on how prevalent I think they still are in people's memories and then paired up just like regular March Madness (i.e. 1 vs 16, 2 vs 15, etc) so apologies if some early match ups seem unfair. It'll hopefully make any upsets that much more exciting!
And now... the bracket!

Doris Troy
Tumblr media
R&B Singer Doris Troy was born Doris Elaine Higginsen in Bronx, New York, on January 6, 1937. Both a singer and a songwriter, her biggest hit, “Just One Look,” was released in 1963 and peaked at no. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Troy’s father was a Barbadian Pentecostal minister, and she began singing in the church choir.  Her parents disapproved of R&B and rock ‘n’roll music and forbade their four children to listen to it. Despite their ban on that music, she became an usherette at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem where she heard and met many of the performers including James Brown, who was credited with “discovering” her.
In 1957, Troy formed a three-girl group named the Halos and began writing songs. A publisher paid her $100 for her song “How About That,” which became a hit for Dee Clark. To earn a steady income, Troy began singing backup and teamed with Cissy Houston and her cousins Dionne and Dee Dee Warrick for Atlantic Records in 1963. Calling themselves the Sweet Inspirations, they sang backup for The Drifters, Solomon Burke, and other established artists.
After writing “Just One Look” with Gregory Carroll in 1963, the couple took the demo to Jerry Wexler of Atlantic Records who immediately signed them. The record was released under the name Doris Troy, as Higginsen changed her name to Troy after the legendary heroine, Helen of Troy.  “Just One Look” was a smash success and was later recorded by The Hollies and Linda Ronstadt. Unfortunately, Doris Troy was never able to match her first hit.
In 1964, Troy visited London and became enamored with the British music scene. She moved to the United Kingdom in 1969 and signed with Apple Records, owned by the Beatles. Throughout the 1970s, she collaborated with British artists and developed a loyal following. She once did a live show backed on piano by Elton John, who at the time was not well-known. Troy sang backup on George Harrison’s hit, “My Sweet Lord,” Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain,” and Billy Preston’s album That’s the Way God Planned It. Returning to the U.S. in 1974, she shared the stage with Otis Redding, Rufus Thomas, and other noted artists.
Perhaps her most memorable stage performance was in Mama, I Want to Sing, a musical she wrote along with her younger sister, Vy Higginsen, and her husband, Ken Wydro. Based on Troy’s life, the musical featured Troy playing her mother, Geraldine. When it opened at the Heckschers Theatre in Spanish Harlem on March 23, 1983, it ran for 1,500 performances before going on a national and international tour. From 1986 to 1999 the musical toured Germany, Italy and Japan, and was performed at the West End Theatre in the UK. The musical was made into a motion picture titled Mama, I Want to Sing starring Ciara, Patti LaBelle, and Hill Harper and released on DVD in 2012.
Respiratory problems forced Troy to move from New York to Las Vegas, Nevada, for the dry desert climate. She continued to perform in supper clubs and casinos. Doris Troy died of emphysema on February 16, 2004, at the age of 67 in Las Vegas.

list 5 topics you could talk about for an hour without preparing any material (i have reason to yap now).
james “jimmy” stewart.
jimmy is just like. that guy for me. i could probably go on an hours long tirade about him, his films, his characters, his relationships, his military experience, his ptsd, his politics, etc. without interruption. right now i'm specifically thinking of his relationship with henry fonda (who deserves his own honorable mention) which OH MY GOD is one of the best hollywood friendships to date. orson welles said they were either having the hottest affair in hollywood or were the straightest men alive. he realized they were the latter... anyways that leads me into:
old/classic hollywood + its underground queer scene and the hays code.
first of all just old hollywood in general i can go hours and hours about because i just love so many of the actors and actresses. leslie howard and gregory peck are other honorable mentions in that category. however, the queer folks will always be my favorite <3 people like farley granger and marlene dietrich come to mind as well as cary grant and his biwife energy. but just all of the queer undertones from then i just appreciate so, so much. also the HAYS CODE... when i get you... i've seen so many pre-code movies which are just incredible and whenever they put that damn code in place everything got boring... unless they fixed the subtext so then you have films like rope (1948) which is such a good gay film like wtf?? old hollywood is a gem and if you avoid black + white movies or just older movies in general you SUCK!!
franklin expedition.
i've written academic essays about this damn expedition and i had no sources at all. just my mind and a dream. for two years my only thoughts for a future career was becoming a franklin expedition researcher who worked in the arctic. of course that's not gonna work?? okay but these dumb mfers were some of my favorite people on this earth like COMMANDER JAMES FITZJAMES was a real person who walked this earth and i never even got close to touching him. this is sickening. captain francis crozier is ALIVE and WELL on king william island you just cannot see him. i think i will genuinely throw up if they ever find crozier's captain log on the hms terror. the desolation and sickness is just like. eye clawingly scary and i could never fathom what truly went down on that island. i feel so so bad for the cold boys and i love them so, so much.
fallout lore
here’s where i start geekin about shit. FALLOUT IS SO FUCKING GOOD I DONT CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS. 3, 4 and new vegas are top tier games (yes nostalgia is clouding my head but idc) i also love 1 and 2 but genuinely cannot play a turn based game like that. okay but the entire plot of new vegas is such a top tier storyline and it’s just such a fun silly game and is like made perfectly for gay trans autistic people i love it. 4 is just The Game you play it doesn’t matter you just end up there and it’s always fun idc what the haters say PRESTON GARVEY MINUTEMEN #1!!! 3 is there. BUT ITS SO BAD ITS GOOD LIKE COME ON ITS ALMOST ENDEARING GOING BACK IN THOSE SUBWAY TUNNELS AND GETTING LOST FOR 30 MINUTES!! these games are the only reason i know the layouts of nevada, washington, d.c., and boston. thank you for the geography lesson AND the history lesson fallout. i love you.
civil war politics and battles
ok this is my latest fixation and one that came out of ABSOLUTELY no where. i literally told myself years ago to never become a civil war buff because it's so stupid and only old men like it but here we are. i for real blame this on david straithairn's portrayal of william h seward because otherwise i would NOT care (sorry ddl, i love you still). also atun-shei films and his humongous catalogue of videos. but oh my godddd i'm so obsessed with these annoying fuckers i hate them ALL. lincoln and seward are just an absolute class-act together and whenever i watched gettysburg (1993) it was just over for me. jeff daniels and c thomas howell when I CATCH YOU (I Want You)!!! it's just all so interesting i love seeing how these men ticked. it's like a zoo exhibition but with random dead racist white guys. (i also had like a 5 minute discussion about lincoln being racist today after i gave a book talk on team of rivals in my college comp. absolute all-timer)
HONORABLE MENTIONS!!!
rms titanic. film in general (i have memorized a shit load of the letterboxd catalogue and I WILL not shut up about my favorite films and directors). classic literature. us presidents. history in general. musical theatre. how arthur morgan is the best fictional character ever written period.
TAGGED BY: @rmstitanics (THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME YAP AND BASICALLY JUST RANT. SORRY!)
TAGGING: @brainandnarfunkel + no one in particular, but know if you see this i want you to… and i know you want to yap as well… :)

Fun fact:
I used to have a huge crush on Preston from Camp Camp when I was younger.. That's probably where my love of dramatic people came from..
I also remember having a huge ass crush on Jamie from Steven Universe.. Another character which boosted my love of dramatic people..,
AND I used to have the biggest crush on Gregory from the Hellpark AU which made me really like the more dramatic, feminine, posh, men.. And what's funny is Hellpark Gregory literally reminds me of James and this was before getting heavily into Pokemon recently and crushing on James... 😭😭😭
This is definitely a trend...
Also obviously I don't crush on Preston anymore because he's a minor, nor do I crush on Hellpark Gregory anymore BUT... This type is still going extremely strong...
Cause now we have Silver Spoon from Inanimate Insanity who also fits the dramatic, posh role.. 😭

Brought Together Across Timelines Main Cast
Each character has run the course of their lives until they died in their setting, and have now woken up in the middle of nowhere in Missouri.
Agnes Proto "PR070"
Agnes Proto, better known by her callsign "PR070", was a starship mechanic in a space-based science-fiction setting. She died in a ship failure accident and woke up back on Earth, in a vastly different time from when she was from. She's generally the tech guy, using her extensive knowledge of her timeline's technology and her patchwork knowledge of our modern technology to make sure things work like they're supposed to. She is decidedly human, though she's known many literal aliens thanks to her adventures on her previous ship.
Clyde Miller "Beatdown"
Clyde "Beatdown" Miller was great at shakedowns. At least, until he found himself on the wrong end of a bullet. Now he's adapting to technology a hundred years ahead of his time, in a location that isn't as kind to dragon-like lizard men as his city was. He's using his strength to help out around the house while he gets his massive feet under him.
Empyreal Avenger "Manuel Rodriguez"
Manuel Rodriguez was born with superstrength, the power of flight, and the powers of light and warmth. When he turned eighteen, he was scooped up by a league of heroes before he could even blink, and he has molded himself into the paragon Empyreal Avenger over the course of twenty years, to the point where it's become his primary identity. But the paragon failed one day, falling to his nemesis, and found himself in middle-of-nowhere Missouri instead of the metropolitan he lived in before. He's adapting to a more rural area with less supervillain activity.
Gregory Preston
One of the two people who didn't actually die, Gregory Preston was living on the farm of his partner (William) while he worked for the butcher shop. It was surprising to his customers to walk in and see him, given that he's a human-sized rabbit guy, but he tries not to worry about it. He's worked in the butcher shop since he was a young man, and now, in his mid thirties, he owns the place and runs it.
Helen Spike
Helen is from a late-to-post-apocalyptic timeline where, to hear her tell it, "everyone lost their goddamn minds". She worked as a sniper to protect the settlement she lived in, but a raid left her dead - and led to her waking up back in time to a pre-apocalyptic version of Earth. She spends quite a bit of time pondering whether or not this is actually the past of her world or if it's an alternate timeline, so needless to say, the existential crisis is strong in this one. She's human, but worries that she's brought back some concerning effects from her time. She's one of the younger humans in this situation, being in her early twenties.
Johnny Mason
Everyone knows the story of the Devil going down to Georgia, but what happened to Johnny the fiddler after that? Well, the Devil didn't claim his soul, but he also didn't go to Heaven due to the deal he made with the Devil, so he exists as a cursed revenant of his former self. Needless to say, he thinks it sucks, especially because he can't talk and has to use shit like pen and paper to communicate with his new housemates (who can at least see him, but not all of them can read English). At least he's still in his home, even though it's been passed down to his descendant, William.
Lindhurst Tempest
Lindhurst was once a pirate on the high seas but was killed during a mutiny - and he wasn't even the captain! Now he's in landlocked Missouri and it's driving him nuts. Especially since he's not exactly human, despite looking like it. A landlocked merfolk used to the sea and trapped in human form because he doesn't know if he can swim safely in the lakes and rivers of Missouri leads to quite a few cases where he's overfilled the bathtub and flooded the bathroom. He's not coping well.
Niobe Turner
Niobe was a traveling mage-merchant but was murdered by some penny-pinching adventurers. Now she's in Missouri with all of her magic and skills, but needs to learn to adapt to Missouri's flora and fauna. It's no problem for this skilled shapeshifter, but she'd prefer to find a way back to her original timeline and get revenge on the adventurers who killed her.
Pallene Thompson "Titania"
Pallene was Empyreal Avenger's sidekick and met her end the same way he did. She was born to a human mother and an alien father, giving her many powerful abilities like flight, energy manipulation, and human empathy. Like her mentor, she's adapting to rural Missouri and its relative lack of supervillains. She's gotten a job in the local library, flying to work instead of dealing with the problem of getting her driver's permit renewed.
Redline Carson
A plague doctor from a steampunk setting, Redline succumbed to the very disease they were treating others for. They're working on understanding that they need to take care of themself just as much as they care for others and has adapted possibly the easiest of the displaced peoples in this Missouri home, getting a job at the county health department half an hour's drive away and obtaining a driver's license of their own. The only problem is the whole "has never removed their mask so we don't know what they are" thing. There are various nonformal bets going around the others in the house, including things like "that's their actual face" and "they have anxiety so they don't want to show their face".
Shania Whittaker
Shania was a prodigial gunslinger from a western setting, practically undefeated in a duel, but met her end at an early age regardless. Now she's in Missouri and honestly dealing pretty well with the different climate. She works for a local antique/secondhand store that's down the street from the library that Pallene works at, so Pallene usually just carries her while flying to work. She also got to keep her horse, Spitfire, so that's who most of her income goes to.
William Willis
Descended from legendary folk hero Johnny Mason, William originally thought that the farm they inherited was too small for them and their boyfriend, Gregory. And then they found a bunch of people from vastly different genres in the field. So they now have to balance their job, their farm (thankfully not one full of animals, but still), and their new charges. Please help them, they are exhausted.

Bette Davis and Thelma Ritter in All About Eve (Joseph L. Mankiewicz, 1950) Cast: Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, George Sanders, Celeste Holm, Gary Merrill, Hugh Marlowe, Gregory Ratoff, Thelma Ritter, Marilyn Monroe, Barbara Bates. Screenplay: Joseph L. Mankiewicz, based on a story by Mary Orr. Cinematography: Milton R. Krasner. Art direction: George W. Davis, Lyle R. Wheeler. Film editing: Barbara McLean. Music: Alfred Newman.
Talk, talk, talk. Ever since the movies learned to do it, it has been the glory -- and sometimes the bane -- of the medium. We cherish some films because they do it so well: the films of Preston Sturges, Howard Hawks, and Quentin Tarantino, for example, would be nothing without their characters' abundantly gifted gab. Hardly a year goes by without someone compiling a list of the "greatest movie quotes of all time." And invariably the lists include such lines as "Fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy night" or "You have a point. An idiotic one, but a point." Those are spoken by, respectively, Margo Channing (Bette Davis) and Addison DeWitt (George Sanders) in All About Eve, one of the movies' choicest collections of talk. Joseph L. Mankiewicz won the best screenplay Oscar for the second consecutive year -- he won the previous year for A Letter to Three Wives -- and in both cases he received the directing Oscar as well. Would we admire Mankiewicz's lines as much if they had not been delivered by Davis and Sanders, along with such essential performers as Celeste Holm, Thelma Ritter, and, in a small but stellar part, Marilyn Monroe? It could be said that Mankiewicz's dialogue tends to upend All About Eve: The glorious wisecracks and one-liners are what we remember about it, more than its satiric look at the Broadway theater or its portrait of the ambitious Eve Harrington. We also remember the film as the continental divide in Davis's career, the moment in which she ceased to be a leading lady and became the paradigmatic Older Actress, relegated more and more to character roles and campy films like What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (Robert Aldrich, 1962). All About Eve, in which Margo turns 40 -- Davis was 42 -- and ever so reluctantly hands over the reins to Eve -- Anne Baxter was 27 -- is a kind of capitulation, an unfortunate acceptance that a female actor's career has passed its peak, when in fact all that is needed is writers and directors and producers who are willing to find material that demonstrates the ways in which life goes on for women as much as for men.
