Yall realize that professionals do not think DID patients should have a community at all, right. Like they think that connecting with one another might exacerbate symptoms.

An ideal state for them is either isolation from community with only their doctor and therapist for support for their condition or a community that is medically supervised and controlled.

This morning I'm thinking a lot about this fic and the concept of concretes (s/o to @epersonae for introducing it to me) and characterization across universes. I said this in a comment on the latest update but the really fascinating thing in this fic re: that topic is that in this case, two timelines essentially add up three Eds. Any time one of the included universes in a multiverse fic is the canon one and a canonical character is aware of the alternate timelines, you end up with something that both is and isn't an "extra" perspective to consider. There may even be more than one "extra" depending on which is the prime universe.

So in this case there's:

The first Ed we meet, Prime Ed, who met the same historical fate that IRL Blackbeard did (as did his Stede) and experienced a completely different version of their love story

Prime Ed living a (thus far) canon-compliant version of the story, seemingly the only character who knows about the timelines thing

A secret third Ed, who is just somehow both/neither 100% Canon Ed nor 100% Prime Ed, because Prime Ed is shaped by his awareness of the multiple timelines while not yet being aware of canonical events. So he's kind of Canon Ed because of the canonical circumstances, but can't possibly just be Canon Ed because of the additional layer of knowing what he lived before.

That probably could be split off again and again and again depending on where you draw your lines around this stuff but a) I feel like it would require discussions of both physics and determinism that I'm unprepared for right now and b) the fic itself isn't finished yet, so there's no telling what other factors might become relevant.

Not sure I'm really building up to any sort of point or whatever, I just really appreciate the way fanfic can scratch both creative and intellectual itches at the same time! If you ever feel like it's "just" fanfic and you should be reading "real" literature, you're selling everyone (including yourself!) short because fanfic as a genre (or a format, god do not get me started splitting those hairs) has patterns and tropes and literary conventions and everything else that "real" literature does, and people who nerd out about that sort of thing are just as able to do that scrolling ao3 as they are with commercially published works.

Please, I have to know what D&Disc Horse is

D&Discworld (AKA D&Disc Horse) is a 5e campaign setting comprised of a flat material plane that's physically bordered by the elemental planes, forming one big disc. The border ethereal forms a ball around the inner planes (so if you fly too high or dig too deep, you end up in the border ethereal). And that whole assemblage spins within yet another ball, with one half being the positive energy plane and one half being the negative energy plane. Lots of weird planar shenanigans going on. The sun is a portal to the positive energy plane. The moon is a magic machine designed to almost-cure werewolves. Etcetera.

This setting was, believe it or not, inspired by a dream I had about a bear. I woke up with a very clear idea of the Great Old Ones hunting souls the way bears hunt salmon. These apex predators can't chase their prey into the ocean, because the very nature of that place slows and weakens them, and they could even drown. Instead, they wade into the salmon's world at the crossover point, where the barrier between worlds is the thinnest. In this setting, the Great Old Ones occasionally reach into the Astral Sea to devour the souls of the dead before they can reach their afterlives.

There's a lot more fuckery with the gods and Great Old Ones going on, (including a bit of metaphysics inspired by field theory that formed the real starting point for the whole world building process), but this post is already long enough.

(Oh, the Horse bit is due to the disproportionate number of Horse Facts I've had to learn to prepare for one of the party members in the eventual inaugural campaign being a centaur. Horse jokes have taken over the group chat. The most common reaction emoji is a horse.)

due to Circumstances, I now have a persimmon seedling and a quince tree, and I am pretty enthused about this

#those are the two fruits I most want to grow #I chose persimmon but the variety I bought in the fall apparently didn't make it #so they offered a baby of another variety + the quince to make up the price difference and YES #now #do I realistically have room for two trees in my front yard period? #let alone a fucking persimmon? #hard maybe!! #but lawns as we know are overrated #and sunny barren DRY as FUCK lawns like this one are definitely a waste of space #so. oops it's a mini orchard now #(the objectively correct answer here is to get rid of the giant invasive maple in the front lawn #which I will do if and when the persimmon gets uh persimmon-sized #but that'll be quite a while) #(I have a back yard also. it is Very Shaded. I love trees!!) #(I am also very glad my neighbors who own 2/3 of the giant pines shading the back #realized it'd be a truly stupid expense to take them down for no reason #look if one of them miraculously falls SIDEWAYS onto my house I will be sad for sure but my dudes that ain't the prevailing wind direction #also they seem perfectly healthy (though I would like to somehow find an arborist whose job isn't primarily Cut Down) #and while I will also be very sad if one even more miraculously drops itself or a huge branch on a person in the yard... #rational risk/benefit analysis folks let's get us some)
