❊ ◜WEST ORLANDO .// demographics
population //. ~350k median age //. 39.1 median household income //. 70k languages spoken //. english, spanish, hatian creole
❊ ◜WEST ORLANDO .// windermere
population //. 3261 median age //. 46.6 years median household income //. 114k careers of residents (most popular) //. management, sales, office and administrative, arts/design/sports/&media  about windermere;; windermere consists of luxury gated neighborhoods with winding roads leading to homes that start at 800k on the lowest and range up to several million dollars. tiger woods used to call windermere home, though he’s since vacated the property. following the back roads through windermere can lead you right up to the back of magic kingdom, which can be a little bit eerie to see. for those that aren’t wealthy enough to own a million dollar home, you can still find home in windermere for the low, low price of about $1700 a month for approximately a thousand square feet of living space. nonetheless, windermere is a safe area close to disney ... so a great many cast members will suck up the high cost of living, stack eight cast members on top one another, and cram into an apartment for the sole purpose of being close to work.
❊ ◜WEST ORLANDO .// winter garden&ocoee
population //. 142k  median age //. 36.6 median household income //. 60k careers of residents (most popular) //. teachers, school administrators, nurses, managers, servers, cooks  about winter garden&ocoee;; winter garden and ocoee are as different as night and day, yet they so often get lumped together because they quite literally slam right into one another and it’s difficult to tell where winter garden stops and ocoee begins. winter garden is a great deal more middle class than windermere is, with more modest homes that go for around $500k. on average, rent is about $1400 a month for 997 square feet of living space. it’s a fairly quiet place to live, far enough away from the theme parks that you can get some peace and quiet from the tourist life but close enough that you can drive to disney in about twenty minutes and you don’t even have to get on I4. you’ll find a lot of small families here. this is another popular living destination for cast members. ocoee, on the other hand, is on the lower middle class to poorer side of things. your average house will go for around $200k, and while there are definitely nice parts of ocoee ... parts of colonial (ie: the west oaks mall) lean on the less-safe side of things. ocoee does have the first oriental market, the largest asian grocery store in central florida and a very small “china town,” with a bubble tea store, a noodle bar manned by underpaid college students, and several other retails. the shopping center is in a state of disrepair, but those that frequent the area don’t seem to mind.
❊ ◜WEST ORLANDO .// metrowest/millenia/oakridge
population //. 115k median age //. 34.1 years median household income //. 36k careers of residents (most popular) //. customer service, cashier, retail, server, cook, janitor, landscaping, housekeepers, truck drivers about metrowest&oakridge;; the metrowest, millenia, and oakridge area is easily identifiable as one of your less affluent parts of orlando. metrowest is a mix of middle class and more impoverished residents. home to valencia college, the area directly surrounding valencia is home to young students, universal team members, and some young families. there are some higher end apartment complexes and gated neighborhoods leading closer to dr phillips, rent averages about $1400 a month (the price being driven up by complexes closer to dr phillips) for a decent sized apartment. head down conroy-windermere road and you’ll be in millenia which is another mixed bag. the millenia mall is the focal point in this area, housing luxury and brand name stores that cater to wealthier shoppers and tourists who have traveled from abroad for a good american bargain. there is also the only ikea in orlando, if you need your swedish meatball fix. surrounding the mall are apartment complexes that throw various labels of “resort style living,” and “luxury” onto their name to drive property value in millenia sky high. surrounding millenia, however, are oakridge and orange blossom travel where you’ll find lower income apartment complexes, government subsidized housing, pawn shops, thrift stores, and more strip clubs than you could ever count. while the apartment complexes are run down, the streets in need of repair, and the crime rate high ... there is a strong culture in this general area. if you want good hispanic, cajun, or creole food ... this is the place to come. this is also one of the few places in orlando to find bodegas and ethnic grocery stores. rent in the millenia and oakridge area averages $1200 a month, with rent closer to millenia being higher and towards oakridge being lower.

❊ ◜ORLANDO.// weather
general //. those who have never made the great pilgrimage to florida often associate the sunshine state with, well, sunshine. they imagine a tropical paradise where they can frolic through disneyworld, contentedly eating a mickey bar and taking wall pictures for the `gram. the reality of the matter is, florida is not the paradise that so many think it to be. and those cute disney instagramers? they thank god for face tune to hide just how fucking awful they feel. the moment you leave the orlando international airport, it feels like chuck norris became the human embodiment of heat and punched you in the face. while there are occasional periods of reasonable temperatures, they are punctuated by a lot of rain and devestating heat and humidity that leaves many a newcomer experiencing this lovely thing called heat stroke. let us dive further into florida's imaginary "seasons." hurricane season //. hurricane season runs from june the first to november the thirtieth. it is during this time that florida's weather is the true embodiment of hell's front porch. on a normal day, temperatures can range anywhere from the high eighties to the low one hundreds with humidity that leaves things feeling like it's twenty degrees hotter than they actually are. those that have keyless start up for their cars are thankful during the summer time, as they can get the a/c in their car going before they get in. for the plebs that do not have those privileges? they have to hachachachacha their way into their car and start the car and get their seatbelt on without burning off all of their skin. and for those of you with leather interiors? you're basically fucked. june and july are certainly hot, but they're not unbearable. morning time is reasonably comfortable, and you can almost certainly guarantee that there will be an afternoon rain storm sometime between the hours of 1PM and 4PM. the period fo time in which it rains varies, it can be anywhere from downpouring for fifteen straight minutes or raining light enough to be an inconvenience for four whole hours. it is a truly floridian thing to place an umbrella into your car, and then to never actually use the umbrella because it rains so frequently that you give up on lugging the umbrella everywhere. during the more dramatic of thunderstorms that occur during the summertime, the thunder can get so intense that it can shake houses and apartment buildings. roads will flood, and everyone will mysteriously decide to turn on their flashers and drive thirty miles over the speed limit on the interstate. because for being a state where it's always raining, nobody actually knows how to properly drive in the rain. most of the tropical storms and hurricanes that form in the atlantic end up affecting florida in some way, shape, or form. in instances of the outer bands brushing up against the state, it'll prompt the usual amount of rain. nothing too shocking or devestating. life will go on as it usually does. if a category 1 to a mid tier category 3 storm threatens to hit the state, floridians will rejoice as work and school are cancelled and go buy out the entirety of the liquor aisle to ride out the storm. "hurricane parties" are a legitimate thing in florida. no exaggeration. for an upper tier category 3 storm to a category 5 storm, floridians will act like it is the appocalypse and will effectively buy thousands of dollars of supplies. for those non native to florida, they typically fall into the "act like it's the appocalypse" category no matter what the level of storm is. they'll barricade themselves in their house or their apartment until after they've done the hurricane thing a few times and then it becomes normal. if you thought the heat before the rain was bad, the heat after the rain is exponentially worse. the humidity increases tenfold and you're not only wet from rain, you're wet from sweat that largely feels you leaving like a drowned rat. the worst of the florida summer is august and september. the heat and humidity can get so bad that it feels like you are venturing outside into soup. the air is thick, and sticky, and forget looking cute because you are guaranteed to have swamp ass two seconds into leaving the air conditioning. influencers and beauty gurus have to pump hundreds of dollars into luxury setting sprays to keep their faces from melting off, and frizzy haired chic may as well become a trend during this time of year. the recommendations for surviving the heat, the rain, the hurricane season? drink water. now drink more water. now drink even more water. find a hurricane buddy, someone that has grown up in florida and can recommend the best brand of tequila to make hurricane margaritas with. keep several changes of clothes and shoes in your car for the inevitable downpour, maybe consider using that umbrella for a change? who am i kidding, we all know it's worth it. and, of course, drink . fucking . water. sfall and swinter //. the end of hurricane season (october and november), and december through february be labeled sfall or swinter ... essentially, slightly less bad summer punctuated by occasional and surprising cold fronts. if the temperature drops below seventy five degrees, that is when you'll see floridians pulling out the knit sweaters, thick hoodies, and the uggs. non-floridians will question what on earth is wrong with them as they are standing their in their t-shirts and flip flops enjoying the fact that they don't feel like death for once. these tiny dips in temperature, however, will typically last all of two to four days before it spikes right back up to being eighty five degrees with humidity making it feel like it's ninety eight again. you see why it's sfall? because it's still summer. late december through february can get a little more brr. temperatures will briefly drop anywhere from the low fifties all the way into the upper twenties depending on the cold front and where it is coming from. the orange groves will threaten to ice over, floridians will descend upon target to purchased puffed jackets to insulate themselves, and the non-floridians will once more question their sanity levels. florida cold should be identified as a wet cold, the humidity having a similar effect to the cold as it does with the heat. it makes it feel colder. factor in the fact that the cold times are also windy with a wet sort of wind chill and it goes highly recommended that you at least wear a light jacket. florida does sometimes have bizarre cold fronts where it'll be thirty eight degrees at 8AM and then by 2PM it is in the mid-eighties. it is always recommended that you plan your "warmer" outfits with layers that can be taken off to reveal layers more suited for the summer. or just carry a change of clothes and shoes in your car. and drink . fucking . water. the pollening //. march begins the season best known as the pollening. the temperatures are finally manageable, ranging anywhere from the high sixties to the low eighties with the bare minimum in humidity. when it is humid, there is typically the presence of a nice breeze to cool you off and keep you from getting too sweaty. so while you're comfortable physically, if you are one of the many to be afflicted by seasonal allergies then your sinuses will be making you miserable. there is only so much that one can do to enjoy the weather when they have a stuffy, runny, crusty nose and watery, itchy, eyes. invest stock in claritin and tissues, my friend, because that pollen is going to fuck you up. the pollening typically spans march through mid to late april. it's gonna be may //. late april through may is the most ideal time to be living in florida. there is some heat and humidity, and there are occasional days of on and off thunderstorms ... but it these times when you need to make the pilgrimage out to cocoa or clearwater for a needed beach day. it's sunny, it's comfortable, there is a breeze, and a distinctive lack of pollen. it's not the best time for theme parks because it's spring break season and everyone from other states are there, but floridians will take advantage of the good weather for barbecues, picnics, and beach days. it does get notably hotter very fast the later you get in may, and the last two weeks of may start that late afternoon rain that you can set your watch by; foreshadowing the june through november misery that is hurricane season. conclusion //. florida, like most places people live, is an acquired taste. there is very little that can be done to warn you about the actuality of the weather. with temperatures that can range anywhere from the hundreds to the high twenties, and a sticky humidity that can make you question all of your life choices ... there is only one thing that can be said about surviving florida: drink . fucking . water.

❊ ◜SOUTH ORLANDO .// demographics
population //. ~350k median age //. 39.1 median household income //. 70k languages spoken //. english, spanish, hatian creole
❊ ◜SOUTH ORLANDO .// kissimmee
population //. 68k median age //. 33.8 median household income //. 38k careers of residents (most popular) //. server, food service, bartender, cook, hospitality, personal care, construction, management, healthcare, administrative  about kissimmee;; exit the walt disney world resort coming from animal kingdom and you will enter into kissimmee. towns like kissimmee are the reason that walt disney bought up so much land to make up the walt disney world resort, wanting to avoid his guests from being able to see the low end hotels and kitschy souvenir shops you find in kissimmee. kissimmee is a popular destination for cast members and team members alike to reside in (even though it’s requires a drive on I4 to get to universal) because rent is moderately affordable and because it is very easy to access things. 192/irlo bronson memorial highway runs through kissimmee and connects the town to haines city, davenport, four corners, and if followed for long enough can take you straight to I-95 to allow access to southern florida. kissimmee is where you’ll also find old town, which houses a 365 day a year carnival, an old-timey photo studio, and a year-round haunted house. old town is kind of on the questionable side, but orlando residents still frequent it nonetheless. rent in kissimmee averages about $1300 a month for a decent sized apartment. it’s a little bit more affordable, but that’s the benefit to living in a giant fucking tourist trap.
❊ ◜SOUTH ORLANDO .// celebration
population //. 8536 median age //. 41.1 median household income //. 83k careers of residents (most popular) //. arts/entertainment/recreation, art/design/sports/media, management, business/finance, sales about celebration;; celebration is land that was quite literally bought by disney for the sole purpose of housing executives and playing home to the corporate offices. everything in celebration gives off the vibe of wealth, from the neatly manicured lawns to the white picket fence lifestyle the residents aim to portray. a great many of the long-term residents in celebration carry some level of importance to the walt disney company, but other affluent and wealthy residents have found homes here in the years following its establishment. it’s a mind boggling transition turning off 192 from kissimmee and pulling into celebration, but it is a fun place to drive around and admire the houses. property value averages around $500k and a standard apartment averages about $1500 a month.
❊ ◜SOUTH ORLANDO .// lake buena vista/williamsburg
population //. ~8,259  median age //. 43.6  median household income //. 51k careers of residents (most popular) //. management, education, office & administrative, sales, arts/entertainment, transportation about lake buena vista & williamsburg;; lake buena vista is ... a weird animal to talk about. technically speaking, it’s not a neighborhood where people live at all, being dominated by 25,000 acre walt disney world resort. however, housed in the walt disney world resort is golden oak ... a high-end, disney designed community housing florida elite, disney executives, retired imagineers, and even a few celebrities. you have to be willing to sacrifice a couple million and maybe an internal organ or two in order to say you live in golden oak, it being incredibly exclusive and difficult to get property in. if you do succeed in nabbing a home, however, you do get free disney admission for life. so that is pretty cool. outside the bounds of disney, there are apartment complexes that attach “lake buena vista” at the end of their mailing address, but disney will claim that is “simply orlando.” the population of lake buena vista is truly hard to estimate, many of the apartment complexes being inhabited by young adults partaking in the disney college program, the international college program, or the cultural representative program. essentially, underpaid college age students come to florida ... hoping for opportunity, and instead they serve as cheap labor for a rat. there are a select few apartment complexes that house non college program residents, nameless cumberland park and discovery palms ... but they’re pretty much 90% cast member dominated ... so what is even the difference? hop onto the start of international drive, however, and you will be taken directly to williamsburg towards seaworld. cast member, team member, and seaworld ambassador dominated ... williamsburg is an odd mix of luxury, resort-style apartments and more affordable apartment homes. williamsburg is so built up at this point that there are very few housing neighborhoods in this area ... but a ton of apartment complex. and seaworld. and restaurants. and hotels. and general international drive nonsense. essentially, think of lake buena vista and williamsburg on the same level as kissimmee ... a tourist trap, only classier.
❊ ◜SOUTH ORLANDO .// doctor phillips
population //. 12k median age //. 44.8k median household income //. 78k careers of residents (most popular) //. management, education, healthcare, sales, administrative, architecture/engineering, arts/media/entertainment  about doctor phillips;; doctor phillips the community in orlando is not to be confused with the doctor phillips performing art center, located in downtown. it’ll take you about twenty to thirty minutes via I4 to get from one to the other if you make that mistake. doctor phillips is the area surrounding universal, spanning the first chunk of sandlake road, a part of international drive, and a portion of turkey lake road. doctor phillips is where you’ll find the rialto, an apartment complex located directly above a shopping center with small retailers and popular restaurants. bento cafe is a particularly popular restaurant among the universal team members that work just down the street. take turkey lake to universal boulevard and it’s a straight shot into the universal orlando resort and citywalk. you can follow universal boulevard to kirkman road and that’ll essentially take you to west orlando and metrowest / millenia / oakridge. doctor phillips leans on the more upper-middle class to upper class side of things, though it does have its parts that are slightly less affluent. a home in doctor phillips will run you about $300k on average. you’ll find the orlando florida temple in the doctor phillips / lake butler area, an ostentatious religious institution of white marble, the second largest church of jesus christ of the latter day saints in the eastern united states (following washington dc).
❊ ◜SOUTH ORLANDO .// lake nona/hunters creek
population //. 23k median age //. 36.4 years median household income //. 65k careers of residents (most popular) //. management, education, computer science, sales, office/administrative, food service, transportation, healthcare  about lake nona & hunters creek;; there are large residential areas surrounding the orlando international airport; two such residential areas located near the airport coming in the form of lake nona and hunters creek. from hunters creek it’s only fourteen minutes to the airport, and from lake nona it’s only ten. . . residents of both areas able to observe the planes coming in to land at the airport. populations in both of these areas, particularly hunters creek, having been skyrocketing in recent years and hunters creek has been expanding and developing at a rapid pace. it seems as if you can blink and a new housing development or apartment complex is springing up, followed shortly thereafter by shopping centers and restaurants to serve the growing amounts of residents. lake nona is primarily inhabited by small families, neighborhoods ranging from middle class to on the wealthier side depending on what part of the community you’re driving through. houses average around 400k, but can skyrocket to the multi-millions if you’re not careful. hunters creek is a little bit more on the affordable side, dominated by theme park employees and members of the service industry. houses go for an average of $200k, but the rapid growth has skyrocketed rent prices to an average of $1500 a month.

the greater orlando area spans a total of 4,012 square miles which makes it the third largest metropolitan area in florida and the seventh largest metropolitan area in the southeastern united states. with a population of 2.57 million people , orlando offers a diverse community where residents speak a number of languages and come from a number of different places around the world. 21% of the population was born someplace outside the united states, while only 45% of the population was born in florida (and less were born specifically in orlando). while many think of florida and think of the beautiful beaches, orlando is nestled into beautifully flat central florida and there is not a beach nearby. that is, unless you count typhoon lagoon or volcano bay. to get to the nearest beach, you must travel either an hour eastward to cocoa beach utilizing the 528 east, or an hour and forty-five minutes westward to clearwater beach utilizing I-4 west, fifty five minutes eastward to daytona beach utilizing I-4 east, or an hour eastward to new smyrna beach utilizing I-4 east. don't let the lack of a nearby beach disappoint you, however, because approximately forty percent of florida homes have a swimming pool ... and pool cultural is essentially a florida way of life (even though floridians bitch about cleaning the pool like it's their job). it is no secret that tourism is orlando's most powerful industry, with orlando being home to the walt disney world resort, and the universal orlando resort. there is also seaworld parks and entertainment, not to be forgotten ... and the fun spot with honorable mention. walt disney world resort employs approximately 70,000 cast members with universal orlando resort employing significantly less people at around 23,000 team members. as of 2019 it was reported that orlando had approximately 144,125 hotel rooms spread between 450 hotels and resorts. orlando boasts the second highest number of hotel rooms in the world. orlando has both the orlando international airport (MCO) and the sanford international airport (SFB) to shuttle people in and out of florida to destinations all across the united states, and the world. there are parts of orlando that give off that distinctly college town vibe, which makes sense considering there are five major institutions of higher education within the greater orlando area. they include: the university of central florida, valencia college, rollins college, seminole state college of florida, and full sail university. the cost of living in central florida is astronomically high, so a large percentage of orlando residents (40%, actually) report living in an apartment with one or more roommates. it is a constant competition in orlando to build the biggest, most luxurious apartment complex so that you can tack the words "luxury" or "resort style living" onto your community to lure people in. for those that don't live in an apartment, the greater orlando area does feature sprawling suburban areas with luxury gated neighborhoods, neatly pruned lawns, and continued attempts to truly be the most decadent and ostentatious. don't believe me? real estate search winderemere. there are a great many ways to entertain oneself in orlando. if the theme parks and the questionableness of international drive and 192 don't do it for you, you have two malls to entertain your time. the florida mall is located in the southern part of orlando, featuring your commonly recognized brand names such as hot topic, spencers, and one of the only remaining build a bears. for the more wealthy, there is the mall of millenia where the poorer residents can window shop at stores like kate spade, gucci, and burberry. you'll find a great many walmarts throughout orlando, but they are usually crammed full of tourists and orlando residents tend to avoid these places like the plague. essentially every walmart in orlando has a shrine to our lord and savior mickey mouse at the front of the store, where tourists can purchase discounted disney merchandise on the off chance they forgot to spend $25 on mickey ears for their great aunt susan. the millenials and college age students are most likely to spend all of their money at target, and there are dozens of them throughout orlando for you to squander your entire paycheck in the bullseye's discounts section. you'll find your whole foods and your trader joes for those who are health nuts, but there is no denying that the shining gem of orlando shopping ... is publix. it's a grocery store with locations dotting every few blocks, with familiar employees donning mint green vests every day to fuel orlando residents with the gloriousness that is chicken tender pub subs. can an employee at walmart tell you where you can find chilis in adobo sauce? probably not. but a team member at publix can. it's aisle three, mid aisle, second shelf. orlando has a large arts community, and an equally as big and active lgbtq+ community making orlando a truly diverse place to live. if you want to get out of orlando? never fear, it's only an hour and a halfs drive from orlando to tampa, and three and a half hours drive from orlando to miami. but perhaps the best part about living in orlando? the legend, the myth, the millers ale house zinger mountain melt. fuel for cast members and broke college students at the low, low cost of $13.99. so what are you waiting for? move to orlando, adopt a pet alligator, get a disney annual pass, and watch out for florida man ... he bites.

❊ ◜THE .// introduction
ahoy there, friends! admin allie here coming at you with a fresh informtional guide about life here in sunny orlando (i say as i'm writing this from indiana and not florida). while we have definitey spent the majority of pre-buzz preaching to you that there is a lot more to orlando than just the theme parks (and as we have proven, there is) ... the theme parks are still an essential part of life in orlando. they are responsible for employing over 80,000 people and serve as a congregating place for tourists from all over the world. now for a little bit about me. i worked for the walt disney company from 2015 into 2016 as a part of the disney college program. during this time i had the privilege of working merchandise and attractions with this amazing company. i returned to disney for a secondary college program in 2017 during which time i returned to working attractions. i took a break from disney in the second half of 2017 and into 2018 and worked for universal where i worked for a period as an rip tour guide / vip tour guide / and with their guest services team. then i returned to disney in 2018 and worked in the resort side of disney before finally getting a fancy office job for disney working with the disney reservation center. i am no longer with either disney or universal, but i would like to imagine that my years of experience working for both theme parks pretty much makes me pretty knowledgeable on how things work as a cast member / team member. now it is important to mention that that everyones experiences with the theme parks is completely different. theme park work is not for everyone and my experiences are not my own and won't directly reflect those of another person. the opinions / facts expressed here are solely for use by members of euphoria, a jcink premium roleplay. they are not meant to bad mouth either of the companies in either way (though i will confess i am being brutally honest in expressing what to expect working for either of these companies). so without further adieu, an unofficial guide to working for walt disney world.

applying for a job with disney is exactly like applying for a job with any other company, you go online to their disney careers website and you apply for one of their vacant positions. plain and simple. all applications submitted to the disney careers portal are not viewed by a human, instead they are run through a complex machine that picks up key words within your resume to determine whether or not you are the ideal disney candidate. it is for this reason that it is important to have a resume with disney-sounding buzz words. usually you'll know if you've moved on to the next step of working for disney within an hour to two hours after applying, receiving an automated email requesting that you submit a survey to help disney learn more about your personality. this is your stereotypical pre-employment survey asking the same exact questions in thirty different ways to determine whether or not you have the disney personality. after submitting this survey, if you have moved onto the next step you will receive a request to interview. interviews are held at the walt disney world casting building across from disney springs in lake buena vista. i would honestly recommend googling the building (there are tons of pictures) because it is really cool looking, and you get this big goose bumps feeling as you walk inside the main atrium because everything spews disney. you will be interviewed by a disney recruiter that will ask you your standard interview questions. it is important to mention that unless you applied for a job that offers a hiring bonus (ie: transportation, housekeeping) the recruiter is interviewing you for all vacant positions within disney and not specifically what you applied for. you very well could have applied for an attractions position and during your interview, you could walk out with an offer to work custodial. where you get placed as a cast member all depends on what areas they need staffed specifically, and your ability to direct the interview. if you really want to work in attractions, it is your responsibility to steer the recruiter towards talking about attractions and why you are a good fit for that specific role. if the recruiter likes you they will offer you a job on the spot. disney is not the type of company to say "oh, well, we'll call you." if they want you, they hire you. if they don't like you, they'll give you some disney excuse and send you on your way. the recruiter will email you your official job offer listing your specific role and your location and will have you accept it while sitting in their office. then they will send you back out into the lobby to wait for another recruiter to call you over to schedule the next steps. the next steps following getting hired are onboarding and then traditions. onboarding is exactly what it sounds like, a member of the human resources team will verify your i9 information and start running your background check. another member of the team will sit down with you and advise you of the disney look which i will go into more detail on later. you will be educated on many different dos and don't about working within the company and then finally they will end the onboarding process by finger printing you and taking your photo for your blue ID. and then you're done. traditions is your first official paid day of work. it is an eight hour class held at disney university, a building located in the parking lot of backstage magic kingdom. cast members joke and affectionately call traditions "disney brain washing," but ... it's not entirely an exaggeration. the point of the class is to teach you company history and background, and also give you insights on the culture of the company that you'll be working for. the class ends with a surprise visit from your boss, the big cheese himself ... mickey mouse. he delivers you very first name tag and your facilitators will hand out both your blue IDs and your name tags and if you're a first time cast member you will 100% cry because this is very emotional. and from that point on, it is on to official training. some helpful hints: as long as you fit with the disney look and have the personality they are looking for, it is fairly easy to get hired with the company. roles consist of attractions, custodial, quick service food and beverage, full service food and beverage, guest relations, "entertainment," housekeeping, front desk & concierge, transportation, merchandise, and so many more. the roles that you cannot get an immediate hire for are those existing within the entertainment bubble as those typically require a formal audition or a secondary set of interviews. entertainment roles include; character performer, musician, dancer, vocalist, photopass, or character attendant. i will be delving into entertainment and its ins and outs in a complete separate post, as this post is already going to have a fuck ton of information. you also cannot get immediate hire for most office and technical or executive jobs (the exception being reservations agents with the disney reservation center). you especially can not get an immediate hire for guest relations or tours with disney, these roles involving an intense application process that calls for at least nine months within the company, and an intensive interview + audition process to prove that you're good enough to wear the plaid.
❊ ◜THE .// company culture
disney has a very high standard that they hold their cast members to, and they either meet these standards or are damn good at pretending like they do. there are some company cultural values that you are taught during the interview process, traditions, and in your work location that become a part of your day to day life. the disney look is a very strict set of appearance guidelines you must comply with in order to work for disney. if you want a really good read, you can find the full disney look book here. if you're like me and you don't want to read that, the tldr of it is : your hair must be of a natural color and not have any sort of an extreme style. mo hawks, faux hawks, extreme fades, undercuts, and anything of that nature are probably not allowed. disney does allow for dread locks, braids, or artificial hair (ie: wigs) as long as it is kept neat and can be pulled up and away from the face if needed. jewelery is limited to a watch and one ring on each hand, earrings can not exceed the size of a quarter, makeup must be conservative (and your manager will yell at you if you try to pull of a cat eye), and you cannot have visible tattoos. your tattoos either must be able to be hid beneath your costume, or you must wear long pants / thick tights / long sleeves to hide the tattoo. only one piercing is allowed on each ear and cast members are not permitted to display any other piercings while working (ie: nose , eyebrow , lip, etc). men must keep their facial hair conservative and neatly groomed. overly long beards / mustaches, and patchy uneven facial hair are not permitted. the four keys disney's service standards are built around "four keys," that are essentially the cast member bible. in order of importance those four keys are; safety, courtesy, show, and efficency. they beat these words into you during traditions, during training, and your managers will regularly remind them of them during your day to day work. as a cast member, you must know and embrace the four keys in order to survive. cast member behaviors; disney has some standards for certain behaviors that you must upkeep. they encourage cast members to eliminate words like hard "yes" and "no" from their vocabulary and instead encourage things like: certainly, absolutely, it would be my pleasure, or "i don't know but i will glady find out for you." there are exceptions to this rule, of course, namely when a mother has stuck ice cream sandwiches in her son's shoes to try and make him tall enough to ride splash mountain. then the cast member will definitely tell you "no, your son can not ride." cast members never point with one finger. directions are always provided by pointing with two fingers or with an open palm. and the disney scoop is another strange cast member behavior you'll witness, where they can scoop up trash / a dropped item without even breaking their pace while walking. cast members are trained to get to know you. they will often comment on small details about you to try and make conversation. if you're wearing a celebration button that disney provides, they will wish you a happy birthday, a happy anniversary, a happy graduation or whatever it is that you are celebrating. if your name is displayed on your button, they will call you by your first name. little kids are addressed as "princess" or "space ranger," and cast members will kneel down to their level to interact with them and will keep the biggest possible smile on their face. it is encouraged to make children feel just as acknowledged as the parents are, because disney is created for individuals of all ages. and finally, cast members are trained experts of de-escalation, well versed at all variations of yelling guests angry over the most obscure of things. if it starts raining, if her son couldn't ride splash mountain because he was a quarter of an inch too short (because the ice cream sandwiches melted) it is your fault and you should be ashamed of yourself. your prized posessions cast members have several "prized possessions" that they keep on them at all times. first, of course, is your blue ID. it is a blue piece of plastic displaying your name, your personel number (how you are identified within disney's internal portal), the god awful picture you took your second day with the company at onboarding, and your seniority date (essentially the date you were hired. as disney is unionized, this also determines how easy it is to get the schedule you want, etc). your blue ID is neccessary to gain access to back stage areas, to redeem free parking at the theme parks, and to access your cast member discount so you don't spend your entire paycheck on disney merchandise (just most of your paycheck). the second prized posession is your main entrance pass. another piece of plastic similar to the blue ID, this is essentially your gateway into the theme parks. cast members receive free admission into all of the disney theme parks worldwide (besides tokyo) most days out of the year, though they are subject to blockout dates. they also receive a select number of "guest passes," that they may use to admit friends into the parks ... also subject to black out dates. the point system disney has a very strict point system that cast members learn to work with while at disney. there are numerous things that you can get points for, but the easiest way to accumulate points is your attendance. to be perfectly clear you do not want points. so here is the simplest possible run down i can give to points.... if you're half a second late to your shift, you get half a point. if you forget to clock in from lunch / clock out, you get a point. if you call out, you get a point. three points in 30 days / 6 points in 90 days / 9 points in 180 days equals a reprimand. four reprimands equals immediate termination, though disney has the opportunity to terminate you before that point if your work performance isn't quite what they're looking for. to succeed as a cast member get . to . work . early and don't call out. also don't call out and go hang out in the parks, that is the #1 dumb way to get termed (disney lingo for "canned.")
❊ ◜TRAINING .// and working
after completing traditions you will officially begin training. the first few days after traditions, depending on your role, are also classroom training. the second day of official work is usually welcome to operations which is a six hour class that you will probably fall asleep four. the class is essentilly focusing upon teaching you those four keys that i mentioned earlier and how to live by them like it is your religion. you are also made to watch the safety in motion video, which is available for your viewing pleasure right here. while training programs are different for every role and location, your third day is typically orientation to your specific park / resort where you will learn the background, history, and theming to your work location. day three very often results in meeting with your official training and taking your first official trip to costuming where you will get your costume for your role. probably the second most exciting and rewarding day of training after traditions, though the disney costume sizes are so bizarre that they'll probably make you feel fat. you wear a size six in real life? well at disney you're a fourteen. from that point on, you'll typically have a week and a half to two weeks of in person training where you have a trainer to show you the ropes and teach you everything that you need to know to function in your job. training will end with an assessment which is two parts, a practical test where you have to show you can perform the functions of your job to a trainer. the second is a written test where you get quizzed on various safety procedures within your area and the work processes that go along with them. and then you can officially get to work.
❊ ◜WORKING .// and other
cast members are usually statused as either full time or part time, with part time working an average of two days a week (12 - 16 hours) all the way up to thirty hours. full time cast members work thirty eight hours at the bare minimum, but typically average anywhere from forty to the possibility of working quite a bit of overtime. when i was in attractions with disney, i averaged sixty-five hours a week. your schedules are dropped via the hub (the website that is your resource for all things cast member) on saturday at midnight a week in advance. cast members typically have face book groups for their work areas where they can communicate and give away / trade shifts as needed to get the schedule that they need to work with their personal life. shifts can be given away / switched via the hub. other than that, working for disney is pretty much your typical job only with some pretty fantastic perks. you get free park admission, guest admission, a discount, and you get to make magic for people all around the world... overall ... pretty cool. if you have any specific questions about playing the most accurate disney cast member possible, you can reach out to me via the site discord or direct message me on discord. i am more than happy to answer questions regarding my specific experience with disney and how to best place your character!! i did not want to share too much information about disney publicy for fear that i would get a cease and desist warning from disney. that would be pretty bad. but i hoped this guide helped you. there will be another guide specific to working entertainment and then a guide to working at universal that you can look forward to sometime soon!
