Grimwalker Jonah’s short and eventful tenure as the Golden Guard, relatively early during Belos’s ministry, perhaps only 4 or 5 grimwalkers into it. He experienced toddlerhood and as much of a childhood as someone like Philip could give him, and lived to see twenty-one before the instability in his makeup - either because Philip fiddled with the spell and put bones from more than one ortet in the mixture or because one of the bones belonged to Philip, transmitting a form of his curse - caused a complete breakdown in Jonah’s ability to maintain a physical, non sludge body.

Philip did not allow himself to become as attached to any of the others, after that.

What's the process of making Grimwalkers here? We know Belos cares about them, is it weird for him to make them? I just want to know more about the Grimwalkers.

In the technical sense, the creation process is the same as in canon. In an emotional sense, it's complicated, in part due to the ingredients he had to use - the most difficult being his brother's bones, and a less difficult one being Selkidomus scales, given that it's a peaceful creature, so getting the scales isn't exactly ethical (unless he gets them from one that was already dead)

Over time, while wanting to have some semblance of his brother around was still a reason for the Grimwalkers' creation, another big reason became that Belos wanted to be a parent - and perhaps, to some extent, since he didn't get to spend much time with his niece centuries ago, he specifically wanted to have a nephew to - in some way - make up for not spending time with his niece/abandoning her.

The creation of the Grimwalkers is purely an emotional decision, and the reasons for it are something Belos himself is only beginning to fully understand now, as he's unpacking his trauma.

That breakdown happened a while before the creation of the first Grimwalker - it's the trauma and grief from Caleb's sudden death. He had been trying to find something that could revive Caleb for some time, but it didn't seem possible, so he was starting to lose hope.

That was until he found out about Grimwalkers. Philip/Belos interpreted them as a way to bring back the dead, so he created one in an attempt to revive Caleb. But his hopes were crushed, as the Grimwalker didn't look exactly like Caleb, and didn't have his memories either.

He was the only Grimwalker to be named Caleb, and the only one Philip/Belos told they were brothers. Every subsequent Grimwalker was created younger and referred to as Belos's nephew, since they are more like Caleb's sons than Caleb himself, given the fact they don't have any of his memories and have their own personalities.

These two are Valor and Cell! (Valor is the o. ne to the top left and Cell is the one to the bottom right)

Valor is supposed to be that one guard from hollow mind. The idea of cell was given to me by my cousin @uncannyx23 , mostly because he loves that cyberpunk stuff or whatever it called lol.

Valor is an engineer and smartie pants who basically created Cell, who is used as Belos's personal weapon. They are a package deal, do not separate' them.

There's more to their story but I'll prob save the rambling for later anyon e's actually interested lol

You know what I said it in the tags earlier but I’m gonna say it out loud now because I love being doomed by the narrative.

Obviously, Belos doesn’t care about the grimwalkers too much anymore. Doesn’t seem to do much except use them as child soldiers and, I dunno, feel some sort of twisted joy out of making “Caleb” work against witches.

But that’s just it. Some part of him cares, just a little bit, because he keeps making grimwalkers from his brother. And, clearly, he didn’t just make them on a whim. Belos wanted Caleb back. He still wants Caleb back. He wants to kill everything that made Caleb leave him, from a palisman to an entire society. He was already going to kill Hunter for betraying him, but he wanted to make it violent after realizing how close the similarities came to Caleb’s ‘betrayal.’

Belos wants Caleb back. The solution? Make a grimwalker. That doesn’t work. They don’t look the same. They don’t act the same. Even when he tries to mold them to be, he kills them. Why?

Because Belos killed Caleb simply for the act of being Caleb. No matter what he does, the fact will always be that Caleb is someone who learned to love a witch and live with magic, and those are things he had to kill him for. If he made a grimwalker exactly like Caleb, they’d always wind up six feet under.

He can’t make a “better” Caleb, either. To make a “better” Caleb is to make someone who isn’t Caleb. There is no “better version.” There’s only Caleb, and not-Caleb. Even if the grimwalker was perfect, if they were everything Belos wanted the two of them to be, they wouldn’t be Caleb. Because the real Caleb doesn’t think like Belos. So, it’s not Caleb, and he kills them.

Every single Golden Guard was destined to die because of something they couldn’t control. It wasn’t because they all betrayed, or because Belos despised them, or he because got bored. It was because he was trying to get his brother back. A brother who would stay forever, who would agree with his actions, who would love him unconditionally, all at the same time.

And that brother doesn’t exist.

i know philip was exceedingly neglectful of his grimwalkers and he never even told them he'd been in the human realm before, but I really like the idea of him spinning this whole story about his Poor Brother who was Killed by Wild Witches and Hunter is just taking it all in with wide eyes and then the ghost of all the grimwalkers Philips killed and his brother start heckling him like "BOOOO I'VE HEARD THIS ONE BEFORE!"

Judging from the bones and masks in King's Tide, there were about 52 Golden Guards. How many were there in Retired Leaders?

Only a handful. I haven't decided on the exact number yet, but there were at least 4 (the first GG, the second one, Hunter's predecessor, and Hunter). I'm thinking 4 or maybe 5 in total.

It makes sense for there to be so few, both because they lived longer, and thus there's less space for more GGs to fit in the timeline, and also because Belos wouldn't immediately make a new one after the previous one died - he would take years to grieve.

For example, Hunter was created 17 years ago, but his predecessor died about a decade earlier.
