He is a jerk. He is Spike. Of course he is a jerk. And he is a walking paradox. He was bad, is bad, but got better. No you can't fix him, but you can love him for his efforts.
So after Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, I’ve seen a few jokes about Death the Wolf being present for every Death in the Shrek franchise (Fairy Godmother’s death in Shrek 2, Harold’s or Charming’s death in Shrek The Third, etc)
Meanwhile - if we’re taking Shrek 4-D as canon - I’m picturing Death side- eyeing Farquaad’s ghost. Especially when he declared that he will rule the Underworld. Which depending on the folklore, is more often than not the Death’s domain, be it a god of death, or an angel of death.
Bottom line, while Farquaad’s ghost was plotting to kill Fiona, Death was at the river’s edge, sharpening his sickles. And considering Farquaad was A. an arrogant prick and B. a spirit at this point ? He may have very well seen Death all the while.
-----
Farquaad’s Ghost: “You might as well stop struggling, Princess; soon, you and I will be together forever. With you as my spirit Queen, I will be King of the Underworld!”
Death The Wolf: (chuckles humorlessly) “Oh, you audaz hijo de puta.”
Another weird ‘plot hole’ in the Shrek Franchise, this time from Shrek Forever After.
So in the main timeline when Shrek leaves the swamp for Duloc he finds Lord Farquaad holding a tournament to decide who goes in his place to rescue Princess Fiona. Farquaad says that whoever wins will go first, and should that guy fail the runner up takes his place and goes to face Dragon, exc until there’s no men left in Duloc, I assume.
After Shrek marries Fiona and they go on their honeymoon, we find out that Fiona’s parents, King Harold and Queen Lillian of Far Far Away, planned for Prince Charming to save Fiona and break her curse.
I would’ve assumed that these decisions would’ve been made and executed with or without Shrek’s involvement.
In the alternate timeline in Forever After, however, Fiona said that no one came to rescue her and she saved herself.
So, how does Shrek never being born in the alternate world affect Lord Farquaad and Prince Charming’s existence or decision to rescue Fiona??
I'm not saying Dreamworks should make a spin-off on Fairy Godmother but I do need to know just how deep her influence goes.
Why was making a wish with her so fanciful and pretty yet Rumpelstiltskin has to do his deal-making from a carriage in the woods.
What would she had done if Farquad married Fiona. I personally would love to know how Fairy Godmother would have systematically and economically lead Duloc to ruin just to in sure Charming be the King of Far Far Away.
Was Lillian always supposed to marry Harold? Who is Charming's father? Just how did she become this way?
Ok so I find it really poetic that big jack horner hated fairytale creatures, specefically hating talking animals, and what ends up getting him in the end is puss in boots, kitty softpaws, Pedro, and the three bears.
And what else ends up getting him in the end? Death, a talking, omniscient, fairytale wolf.
And this retroactively makes all the previous Shrek villians deaths ironic is that, on top of being defeated by Shrek in the end, the person who reaps their soul is the very thing they hated
Also bonus points if he's trans so prince charming and the fairy godmother's calling the big bad wolf "gender confused" bc he likes wearing women's clothing is karmic punishment. Death definitely has cool tattoos over his top surgery scars lmao.
Also also, I feel like death chooses a talking anthro wolf as his form for a few reasons ; 1) mess with bigots who hate fairytale creatures, 2) scare talking cats since they have 9 lives, it makes sense he would be annoyed with this. And 3) to appear both soft and cute, but also be menacing and terrifying at the same time.
Imagine if you died of old age, in a hospital, and a giant adorable wolf comes to great you as an old friend.
But also imagine if you squandered your life, made a joke out of it and a giant wolf runs towards with blood red eyes.
