Their relationship was so wholesome.  Sartaq is exactly the kind of male character I like to write, kind, earnest, not afraid to have his feelings but also respectful.

Happy Holidays! Here is my special holiday story for @hlizr50! I was so stoked to write this because, like my bestie, I believe Nestaq is criminally underrated as a ToG couple, and it's been so fun exploring their dynamic and relationship post-KOA.
Join Nesryn and Sartaq as they embark on a heartfelt journey to create a holiday like no other—a holiday that whispers of joy, tradition, and the unbreakable bonds of family. Please note, that the story will be 5-6 chapters. The first two chapters are posted and the rest will be posted throughout next week. But, due to holiday obligations, there's no promise of a schedule. You can read the first two chapters on Ao3:
Chapter 1
Chapter 2

Today we also celebrate the Right Believing Prince Alexander Nevsky. Saint Alexander was the Prince of Novgorod, Grand Prince of Kiev, and Grand Prince of Vladimir. He enjoyed military victories over Sweden and Germany, earning the reputation of a hero. He was posthumously beatified as a saint by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1547. Nevsky, who was a grandson of Vsevolod III Yuryevich, was elected the Prince of Novgorod in 1236. Three years after becoming the prince, he married Paraskeviya, a daughter of the Prince of Polatsk. As a ruler, he continued to restore Russia by promulgating laws and building fortifications. He also changed the constitutional base of ruling in Novgorod to implement institutional sovereignty. Due to his bonding with Sartaq Khan, the son of Mongol ruler Batu Khan, Nevsky was proclaimed the Grand Prince of Vladimir in 1252. The prince died in 1263, at the age of 42. Shortly before his death, he had taken monastic vows and received the religious name of Alexis. ToG Read-A-Long, Tower of Dawn, day 5
Ch 22
“Not that Hafiza would scold her, but ... Yrene could not escape the feeling that she needed to confess. To make it right.”
What do you MEAN she wouldn’t scold you! Doctor’s don’t usually treat their own family or loved ones. You’re in tricky territory with this crush you’re harboring Yrene!
“Chaol went on, "We spoke long into the night and fell asleep. Nothing happened."
Yrene ignored the way her chest both hollowed out and filled at the words. Didn't trust herself to speak as the information settled.”
I feel so alive right now
It’s literally my favorite thing lol
I love messy, upsetting love triangles and mutual pining AH
(But also get a grip you two)
(Chaol. You should probably break up with Nesryn)
(Last night was pretty unacceptable for someone with a girlfriend)
(You need to do something about it before you two go any further)
"Because if they were merely banished to their realm, who is to say they aren't still waiting to be let back into our world?"
Oh for fuck’s sake.
Do we have two brand new villains to worry about????
I knew this peace wouldn’t last 😩
Ch 23
I hate watching people suffer. Chaol omg 🥺 No. baby. You poor sweet baby.
These chapters of watching him dwell on the darkest, saddest most pitiful parts of his life, and then just get given what he needs, it’s very good. I can’t believe this guy was suffering so much and no one ever knew. Poor baby.
Ch 24
“Let's have an adventure, Nesryn Faliq, he'd promised her in Rifthold. She had cried then, too.
But perhaps ... perhaps neither of them had seen. The path ahead. The forks in it.”
I am actually crying
Ah
It hurts
I didn’t think I would care so much, watching these two break up, but I do
And it hurts
Ch 25
I’m not ready, my heart is still broken. He’s going to the library with Yrene and he doesn’t know that she left him a breakup note.
Nesryn is with the prince - and he doesn’t know.
They’re all the way out of love - but no one is aware yet.
This is so bittersweet.
Ch 26
He found the breakup note 😭
“He didn't let himself finish the thought. He should have been better. Treated her better. No wonder she'd flown off to the ruk aeries to help Sartaq find any sort of information on the Valg history in this land - or their own.”
It’ll be ok baby.
Sometimes it just wasn’t meant to be.
Please don’t be so hard on yourself

Tower of Dawn Review
Tumblr media
This book. I loved this book.
Even in the early morning, the tower was a beacon, a jutting lance of hope and calm.
These towers represent so much in this story. Hope and calm. Also peace and restoration and power and, of course, healing. I just want to close my eyes and imagine it, so serene and full of the promise of life and health the selflessness of those healers who dedicated their lives to saving others. And The Womb with it's bells chiming, a reminder of the generations of healers who had served there, dedicated and powerful.
And whenever she explained that she had come from Adarlan but that her people hailed from the southern continent their replies were all the same: welcome home.
Nesryn finding her place, her home was such a beautiful part of this story, and an unexpected one. That she found both love and with a prince and place where she belonged so seamlessly as she was meant to be there all along was perfection. And Sartaq! That he was willing to walk away from being Heir to be with her. For her bravery and loyalty and commitment! I love them!
With nothing to do beyond sit in the wheeled chair that he'd deemed had become both a prison and his only path to seeing the world, Chaol took in the details of the sprawling palace perched atop one of the capital city's countless hills.
Ugh, my heart broke for Chaol. His depression. His guilt. How he had trained his whole life to do one thing - fight - just to be rendered mostly incapable of doing so. And yet he still tried. The way he was always ready to stay behind and fight while Yrene ran. How he always put himself last. How he never gave up defending however he could.
Every step. Every curve into darkness. Every moment of despair and rage and pain.It had led him to precisely where he needed to be.
But the way he healed and found the goodness in himself despite all his guilt. The way he fought it and pushed back at it and refused to let it win. I love Chaol so much.
The darkness belongs to you. To shape as you will. To give it power or to render it harmless.
Oh, the love I have for Yrene Towers. Her determination and drive and compassion make her amazing. She never wanted greatness. Never asked to be special. She wanted to heal people, and that one chance encounter gave her the courage to cross mountains and seas to do it. And the way she kept true to her promise and trained those other girls. I can't love her more

Tower of Dawn: Review

🌶️
Summary
Chaol and Nesryn set of to Antica so Chaol could get healed by the world's top healers after being damaged in his spine and unable to walk. They arrived as a couple, but they're not doing too great. Chaol's pride is damaged too much to let Nesryn *ride*.
So, they arrive, and start getting the lay of the land. The royal family is mourning the loss of their youngest daughter and they're not just going to hand over an army to help Aelin defeat the Valg.
Nesryn splits off and starts learning about their Rook rider army with Prince Sartaq. Chaol begins a healing program with Yrene Towers. They go on their own separate adventures and end up falling in love along the way. I don't want to spoil too much, but THIS IS THE SPICE that Chaol was missing in book 2 with Celaena.
By the end of the book, Chaol, Nesryn, Yrene, and Sartaq have all learned some SHOCKING news about the Valg, Queen Maeve, and are ready to rejoin forces with Aelin to "make the world a better place".
Tumblr media
Sartaq
LOVE. Sartaq and Nesryn are just...perfect. They admire each other, but I'd argue unequally. I think Sartaq admires Nesryn more. And, as my wise Chinese grandmother said, "Always be with a man who loves you more than you love him". It's kinda fucked up, but she's not wrong y'all. I'm so happy for Nesryn and Sartaq.

Yrene Towers
How can someone who is passionate about helping others be so callous at the same time?? Idk but I love Yrene's quirks. I see why SJM wrote Yrene into existence. Who else could love Chaol? He's so proud and keeps claiming that he doesn't need help. Yrene doesn't give a single squirt of duck shit and forces help upon him, cornering him with her healing powers and forcing him to move past his trauma to emerge as a decent human being. I don't get it, but I respect it.

---------------
5/10
Idk I feel like switching to Tower of Dawn after "Where is my wife" was SUCH let down. Maybe that's what SJM's intention was and why she built Chaol/Nesryn into the "meh" characters? The whole book was pretty slow up until the very end when all of the JUICY details about the Valg, Maeve, spiders, healers and firebringers were revealed. Did it have to be a WHOLE ASS 33h audiobook? It was okay.
At least Chaol isn't as annoying anymore. His link to Yrene sets me on FIRE

Tower of Dawn by Sarah J Maas
My Rating: 4.25/5
Alright, so, Chaol, now Hand of the King, journeys across the Narrow Sea to get to Dorne…I mean, the Southern Continent to get his paralysis magically healed….I’ll talk about my feelings on that later.
For the most part, I really did enjoy this book. Maybe it’s because Aelin wasn’t in it but I found the three POV characters very likable. Even Chaol who I have been permanently referring to as Mayonnaise Boy has become a likable character to me.
It is very, VERY, obvious in this book more so than any of the others that SJM was heavily inspired by GOT for this series. By taking the terms Narrow Sea, Hand of the King and even calling Aelin in EoS The Queen Who Was Promised is something taken straight from GOT. (The Prince That Was Promised) There’s Aelin who is fire, Dorian who is ice. The Southern Continent is very clearly inspired by Dorne with their freestanding beliefs and inclusion of all peoples, etc. I could go on and on with the comparisons but I won’t. You get the gist.
While a lot of the information given in this book is very info-dumpy I thought it was interesting. I read that this was inspired by the Mongolian Empire and I’m not versed enough in that to know how accurate SJM was. All I can say was that it was definitely a different setting than the rest of the series and I feel like Antica is a paradise that I want to live in.
I don’t have many complaints about this book, to be honest. I really enjoyed Sartaq’s and Nesryn’s relationship. I like that they had a much slower burn than a lot of other couples in TOG and their relationship is a lot more understated and not super physical. I actually thought Sartaq was going to die for a second when they fought the spiders and if he had I would’ve applauded SJM for shocking me with a character death like that. (Sorcha doesn’t count, she was so pathetic and literally just a rebound to give Dorian male pain.) Despite the fact that Sartaq survives, I’m glad, because he is probably the only male love interest in this entire series whom I have zero issues with.
Even Yrene and Chaol’s relationship was well done, imo. I honestly think that Yrene is in love with Aelin though, you will never convince me that she wasn’t whole-heartedly in love with that girl for the years she spent at the Torre. She carried Aelin’s note around with her for years, never sold the brooch Aelin gave her. She shouldn’t have married Chaol and should’ve confessed her love to Aelin. (Sadly there are no lesbian POV characters in these books so I just have to use my imagination to ship couples. Yrene and Aelin. Manon and Elide. PLEASE)
Hasar was so disappointing to me tbh. She’s the first lesbian character introduced in teh series(and her ‘lover’ Renia, please stop using that term, SJM) and I HATED HER. Why? Because she was such a needless bitch at all times. Every shitty little comment she made to Chaol about how he still wasn’t walking. The way she manipulates Yrene and tries to force her towards Kashin. Like my GOD.
While I thought Yrene’s bedside manner in the beginning of the book was awful and actually kinda pissed me off because bitch you are a DOCTOR and Hafiza making you cure a man who needs your help isn’t ‘cruel to you’ it’s being pragmatic considering you took an OATH to HEAL PEOPLE regardless of who they are. I thought that was an interesting convo tbh. I liked the slow burn of Yrene and Chaol’s relationship. How they healed together internally as well as externally. I liked it a lot better than the slow burn healing part of Rowan and Aelin’s relationship(probably because there was no abusing of one another here)
Another thing that really started to grate on me was everyone trying to convince me that Kashin is a good man. If he was a good man he would accept Yrene’s no for an answer, tell his siblings to stop pushing them together and apologize for making her uncomfortable. But no. He keeps pushing and pushing. That does not a good man make.
Now for my biggest complaint.
Okay, so Chaol’s healing.
I know that people have said that his healing journey is ableist but the main reason I see people saying that it’s ableist is because of Chaol’s reaction to being paralyzed. He thinks it makes him less of a man in the beginning, etc. And while I can see why people would think this it also makes sense to me that Chaol would react that way. It makes sense to me that any able-bodied person would initially have a negative reaction when they lose so much mobility like that. I think anyone would be angry with themselves and with the world until they learn to accept it. I think that the first 70% of the book did a really good job slowly healing Chaol from his mental trauma and slowly regaining mobility. I think things could have been done differently though. If Rowan had managed to completely heal Chaol’s spine after the initial break and it was simply the Valg parasite preventing him from walking then they could’ve done it where Yrene spends all that time learning to fight the Valg and healing him from it, right? But then when she defeats the Valg I think that Chaol should’ve had to still do all the work that any other person who hasn’t had the use of their legs in months should’ve had to do. It should’ve been a super long grueling process back to the road to recovery. Chaol should’ve had to accept that he might not be back in fighting condition in time to participate in the war but there are other ways he can make himself useful. I don’t mind fantasy books magically healing people but I do think there should still be consequences for more serious magical injuries. If someone loses an arm, unless they have an ability to regrow limbs, they should have to learn to adapt to life without an arm. Just like anyone else who has lost an arm has had to do.
I think that Chaol’s muscles magically reverse-atrophying was the wrong move. Having him be able to stand and walk and run immediately after having the parasite healed was the wrong move and Yrene’s commentary about how he was so much better at sex now that he was healed was a terrible move.
In the end, Chaol’s back gets literally rebroken and he’s about to die. Obviously, he wouldn’t stay dead because this is a SJM book and she won’t let that happen. They will not let this poor man go. Like literally, just let him die. But instead they tie his life to Yrene’s as well as his injury. And this is the part that I just… I hated.
So now, Chaol’s injury is tied to Yrene’s magical ability. When she is depleted, he cannot stand. Now Chaol seems perfectly content wit this and says that using the chair and cane makes him no less of a man(which is true) but I can’t help but think that there will be days where Chaol feels extra bitter about his injury and then focuses that anger on his wife who he can now technically blame for his inability to walk if she’s depleted. Like will he be in pain when her magic is used? What if he guilts her into feeling bad for healing people because it puts him in pain? I just see so many things going wrong with this.
Oh completely forgot to mention that once again, SJM kills NO ONE. Chaol should've died, Hafiza should've died, Duva also probably should've died. Falkan definitely should have. Like come oN kill SOMEBODY.
Okay, so that’s all folks.

Shout out to my girl Nesryn Falyq for acknowledging that she deserves better than a halfhearted relationship and can actually get to know someone that wants to know her and be her friend (and more than that) and who wants to spend time with her (outside of any agenda/work) because of who she is in all her facets. And girl, that prince you chose is iconic. Hope to receive a wedding invitation soon.
Chaol, you can sit down and learn a couple of things, honey. You had your chance, and you utterly underappreciated this amazing woman.

The Veiled Arrow - Coming Soon
Nestaq - Mulan au
Nesryn Faliq has been searching for an adventure her entire life. She does not want to marry or have babies or take over her father’s bakery; she wants to fight and win honor for herself and her family’s name. So when the draft is sent out and calls her father to fight for the khaganate against the Valg, Nesryn sees her chance. Knowing she will be underestimated and ignored as a woman in the army, Nesryn joins Prince Sartaq’s legion of ruk riders as a man. With a shapeshifter and future hearth mother on her side, Nesryn believes she may truly be getting the adventure she has yearned for. That is, until a certain Winged Prince changes everything.
Here is my new fic series, ‘The Veiled Arrow’! It will be a Nesryn x Sartaq story with a plot that is a twist of Disney’s Mulan. It is in an alternate universe than Throne of Glass so Nesryn grew up in the Southern Continent and does not know Chaol or Aelin. Also, for the purposes of this story, while women are still in positions of power, they are almost never considered for positions of combat. But don’t worry, Nesryn will still be the badass female we love and there will be plenty of growth for both characters. The first chapter will be out soon, let me know if you want to be tagged!
