Once I saw a tweet saying that Izetta and Finé were Maki Nishikino's grandmothers... and I swear to god, it changed my life. Once you see it you can't unsee it.
She looks like them so much! The hair style and colour. Her eyes.... Even her personality match with theirs! While she is super self-confident, Maki gets shy when teased and it's a loyal friend... Besides, she is also really rich.... And she believes in Santa... These two would totally encourage that... And her solo album is called Scarlet Princess.
I don't need any more evidences. It's canon now.

Something I like about Fine is that while she’s a “princess” and a very diplomatic leader, the second you threaten her people and Izetta she is gonna throw down. She will first fight you in the parking lot of a Denny’s.
Yeah Finé is a teenager forced into a position of power and responsibility much too young and it shows lol. Not in the sense that she's a bad leader at all, but just that her composure goes out the window as soon as her girlfriend is in danger sakwpskwlskskwcs she's normally so calm and nice but if Izetta gets hurt she can and will throw hands 😂

Symphogear XDU English (Unofficial) Translations Index
Last updated: 2020-09-10
At the moment, I unfortunately don’t really know much at all about the game mechanics of XDU (other than the fact that it has something to do with gacha?)
But there's a story element to the game as well, and it seems that there are translations of the main/event/quest/memoria stories scattered haphazardly in various places on the interwebs. Some are line-by-line translations, and others are paraphrased summaries.
To try and organize my understanding, here’s a list of the translations I know about (there probably are ones I don’t know about):
YameteTomete is a group that does various translations of Symphogear-related things. They have some XDU translations up on their web player (with graphics and sound!) See also their Twitter.

Dear sis , have you tried watching Izetta the last witch? It's actually really cool watching a sort-of magical girl beating the crap out of an entire military force by herself! Just kinda wanna know your thoughts on it
Yes sis, I’ve recently have and I ended up liking it more than I thought.
Tumblr media
Izetta the Last Witch was advertised as some kind of historical magical girl anime, with that in mind, I started watching and felt very underwhelmed at the beginning.
To be fair, calling Izetta the Last Witch a magical girl anime is misleading. Yes there is a witch and magical elements but that’s not the main subject of this anime, the war and the political elements are (This anime is set in an alternate Earth on the eve of the Second World War).
At first, the development of Izetta and Princess Finé (the girl in green) relationship is kinda messy and unclear (and I don’t think this was intentional), it gets so much better later on. The same goes for the magical elements.
Tumblr media
Truth be told, the first half of this anime is really weak and it almost made me quit. I’m glad I didn’t because the second half of the show is so much better and gets really intense.
To be honest, once I learned that this wasn’t a magical girl anime I was only watching because of the war and political issues because they were the most interesting things about this anime (seriously it got me hooked up). As I said before, I’m glad I didn’t quit because in the second half, once they start showing more about the story of the ~White Witch~ and the final battle begins to build up, it gets really intense and so much better.
I’d rate Izetta the Last Witchwith 7.5 / 10 with the following pros and cons.
Pros:
Actually a very good historical / war anime with magical elements.
Gets better in the second half.
The development of the war stuff and the way it’s explained is awesome.
Cons:
Weak first half.
Sloppy animation at times.
Cliché relationship between the two main characters

Finé and Izetta reacting to their first kiss, or first date?
[[Thank you for this ask anon! And I apologize for the utterly abysmal wait time. I hope you all like this! I’d love to help keep this fandom going.]]
The sun hadn’t quite risen yet. Fog, rather than people, filled the streets, a fact which hardly caught Finé by surprise–the early autumn wind seemed to effortlessly pass through her several layers and chill her right to the bone. The fact that she was walking probably helped, but…
“I’m fine,” Izetta said with a laugh. She turned back to look at Finé, who could feel heat rising to her cheeks–her attempt to check on Izetta unnoticed had clearly failed. She was leaning to the side, obviously trying to look around Izetta to make sure all of the blankets on her lap were intact, and that none had been caught in the spokes of the wheelchair.
“If you say so. I won’t hesitate to lend you my coat, though.” Izetta’s singsong giggle rang through the air once more. “I’m serious!” retorted Finé with false indignance, though she could hardly be angry with such a sweet sound in her ears.
The morning’s silence resumed; aside from the rare chirping bird, the only sound was Izetta’s wheelchair rolling across the cobblestones. Bianca and Adele were surely nearby as well, but the royal guards’ presence was easy to forget–their silence was a honed skill, after all, and there was no lack of hiding places.
The heart of Landsbruck boasted establishments of all sorts: tailors, inns, restaurants, concert halls, art galleries… Of course, at this hour, the shop windows functioned better as mirrors, what with their interiors dark and empty.
Elvira had made all sorts of suggestions before they’d set out this morning. What to wear, where to go, what to eat, who to see… but this time, Finé simply refused with a smile, recalling how her tutor’s involvement made Izetta uncomfortable before. She appreciated Elvira’s enthusiasm, of course, but Finé was sure that she could take care of their plans. This time, it wasn’t about Eylstadt, it wasn’t about Ortfiné Fredericka or the White Witch Reborn. Today was about Finé and Izetta, two girls in love.
“Tell me if you see anything you like,” Finé said softly.
“Now? I’m not sure if that's…”
“We might–we’ll be back soon enough.”
“Right!” Izetta responded, apparently ignoring the implications of the other girl’s mistake.
Finé breathed a small sigh of relief at Izetta’s cheerful tone. She wanted today to be perfect, or as close to perfect as was possible, and she cursed herself for nearly ruining everything before the day had even begun. They would be back. Together. She would make sure of it. They would be back, in broad daylight, enjoying themselves like any other couple in Eylstadt, with no more pressing worries than which shops to visit or what desserts to eat.
However convenient it might have been, Finé would not have Izetta hidden away for the rest of her life. The war had made their circumstances difficult–the world thought Izetta was dead, but… It would work, damn it–they would work. Finé would make sure of it. Izetta, of all people, deserved that much. She would do anything to keep Izetta safe, but nothing could convince Finé that keeping her love hidden was the only way.
“Finé? It’ll be alright.”
Izetta was looking back at Finé, her brow furrowed with concern. A part of her regretted making Izetta worry, but her gratitude far outweighed the guilt. It might have come across as empty reassurances from anyone else, but with those few words, Finé’s heart began to slow. She breathed deeply, crisp air filling her lungs, and felt a weight lift from her shoulders as she watched her breath turn to fog in the cold. Only around Izetta could she truly let her guard down, could she truly confess her fears, her insecurities… for all the time she spent years ago calling her “princess”, Izetta never seemed to care about whatever title Finé possessed at the time.
“Um, also, we sort of… passed Kirsch Baum…”
“What?!” Finé turned around, and sure enough, the bakery was a dozen paces behind them. But when she looked back at Izetta, her apology died on her lips. She was greeted with the most wonderful sight–a smile she knew well and loved dearly. A smile that she knew from experience was infectious. She couldn’t help but grin as she turned Izetta around, their laughter filling the desolate street.
It had been ages since she’d seen the gardens–and never had she been there during autumn. There weren’t quite so many flowers as usual, but the changing leaves were every bit as colorful. The trees along their path looked to be ablaze, every leaf a more vibrant hue than the last.
But no matter how beautiful the foliage, it hardly compared to her present company.
Izetta and Finé had stopped in a pavilion of sorts, illuminated by the ardent rays of the setting sun. No roof hid the sky from view, but intricate trellises had been arranged in a circle, forming a wall of flora broken only by the small gap from which they’d entered. At its center stood a small table with a single chair at the far end.
Izetta didn’t recognize the table. It wasn’t as if she’d memorized every piece of furniture in the palace–there was far too much–but she thought this particular piece might have been made with her in mind. It was a bit lower than one might expect, but its height allowed her to remain situated in her wheelchair, hence the single chair for Finé. Even that was a bit more stout than others she’d seen.
Once the pair settled in, Izetta found herself smiling.
“It’s a lovely view, isn’t it?” Finé asked with a smile of her own.
“Well…” Finé cocked her head to the side. Izetta felt heat rising to her cheeks. “I was just… thinking about how nice it is to see you like this. I usually have to look up.” Her smile grew wider, seemingly of its own accord. “I guess I was appreciating the view, after all.”
Finé’s short laugh was as contagious as ever. After a moment, though, her expression darkened. “Does it bother you? I had the table made to fit your chair, I never even… I hadn’t realized–”
“Whenever we’re together–whenever I have the chance to see you–I’m far too happy to be bothered by something like that.”
With that, Finé’s smile returned… but this sort of smile was usually reserved for others–heads of state, visiting dignitaries, even trusted advisors. An elegant curve of the lips, nothing more. Izetta knew that that wasn’t what happiness looked like on Finé. Her eyes didn’t sparkle, for one. Her nose didn’t wrinkle–even the tips of Finé’s ears had turned red once she realized that Izetta noticed, having mistaken Izetta’s delighted giggle for anything but adoration. The early days of their relationship had been full of moments like that–learning the little things about each other, since a war looming overhead had robbed them of such opportunities before. A war with consequences for which Finé still clearly blamed herself, even though Izetta had fought willingly.
“Fighting for Eylstadt gave me a purpose, you know.” Finé frowned and bowed her head, looking anywhere but at Izetta. “After Grandma died, I was always running, and then I was captured, and…” she took a deep breath, reaching across the table to take Finé’s hands into her own. Finally their gazes met once again. “A lot of bad things happened, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I was happier than I’d ever been since the day we met.”
This wasn’t the first time she’d said something like this, and so Finé’s response was little more than an echo–unchanging, hollow, quieter and less certain each time. “But you didn’t deserve to be hurt. You deserved better than this, and I…”
This time the echo was cut short by a long breath as Finé closed her eyes.
“And I will not burden you with this yet again." She let out a heavy sigh as she stood, and made her way around the table until she stood right before Izetta. "It may be selfish of me, but I'm just glad you're alive. I... I don't know what I would do without you. I think I'll always carry that guilt with me, but no price is too great if it means you'll be here." She knelt down, apparently caring not at all for the dirt underfoot that would surely soil her dress, and wrapped her arms softly around Izetta, resting her head against the other girl's chest.
Izetta wrapped her arms around Finé in turn, and she could not have said how long they stayed like that. It would have been paradise, she thought, to simply remain that way forever--holding Finé in her arms, breathing in the scent of her soft, golden hair, slowly stroking her back and merely existing with the one she loved most in this world. The use of her legs, she thought silently, was a small price to pay for this happiness that had once been completely unknown to her.
After a blissful stretch of time, they disentangled themselves with all the haste of a billowy cloud creeping its way across a midsummer sky. Finé looked up at her, still crouching, their faces a hair's breadth apart.
“Do you mind if I…” Finé trailed off, her words carried away by the cool autumn breeze.
It was a rare thing indeed to see the Archduchess of Eylstadt lose her nerve.
She moved backward and started to stand, but before she could pull away further, Izetta brought her hand up to Finé’s cheek, catching a few golden locks in the process. The world itself seemed to stop in that moment–purple eyes widened to meet Izetta’s, matching her own surprise. They’d shared a kiss once, on the eve of her battle with Sophie–a single happy night in the midst of war–but it seemed like eons ago. For all the happiness it had brought her at the time, the memory now brought with it pain as well. That kiss had been a farewell to the girl she loved so dearly. She had been so sure that she would never return…
Izetta brought her lips to Finé’s. They were soft, just like before, and warm, just like before, and sweeter than any pie in the world, just like before. But now there were no tears welling in her eyes; she did not ache with the strain of the Magic Stone. Now she felt light, and giddy, and with a start she realized that this was the closest thing to magic she’d ever felt since giving up her power.
When she finally leaned back, she opened her eyes to see Finé staring, unshed tears glistening in her eyes. She opened her mouth to apologize, but Finé caught her intentions even before she’d uttered a word.
“You’re braver than I am.” Though tears had begun to roll down her cheeks, Finé laughed. “I know you hate to make me cry–oh, Izetta,” she sighed, bringing a hand up to cup Izetta’s face, “don’t worry. Right now, I’m happier than I can ever remember,” she sniffed, wiping her tears with her other hand. “You’re here, and you’re safe, and–”
“And I love you,” Izetta blurted out, “Finé.”
“And I love you, Izetta.” Finé’s kiss was shorter, but just as heartfelt. She wrapped her arms around Izetta, the same way she had in another life, on a frigid mountaintop beneath the moon. This time, Izetta thought, she wasn’t sure Finé would ever let go–but this time, she’d never need to. “Always.”

On Izetta and the Importance of Perspective
Tumblr media
Izetta has always looked at Finé. Not just in the literal sense but in the abstract as well. Izetta was the kind of kid who always looked down, afraid that people were going to yell at her or attack her for being who she is. Finé on the other hand, she was different. Izetta sees Finé in a very specific way and we as the audience get clued into that by the use of clever camera angles and framing. We constantly see Finé from Izetta’s point of view and in animation this can be a powerful tool to let the audience get an idea about character relationships. Izetta looks Finé in the eye, even when she gets embarrassed and looks down, her gaze is always brought right back to Finé’s eyes. Being able to see this from Izetta’s point of view lets the viewer make the same connection that Izetta does. It lets us understand just what Izetta sees in Finé and it lets us know just why Izetta cares so much and why we should care so much.
Starting at the beginning, Izetta first sees Finé on the dock of the lake in the woods, too far away to really see her clearly. Once they both fall in the lake, however, does Izetta really get a good look for the first time. The reaction from her is almost instantaneous as Izetta kind of sits there dumbfounded for a few seconds with her eyes wide and mouth hanging open. Izetta comments later that Finé “looked like a princess” but she didn’t know that she was one yet. Knowing that makes Izetta’s reaction extremely obvious and kind of adorable all at the same time.
I always find myself impressed when a piece of media goes out of its way to show gay kids. There’s a bit of stigma to showing kids as gay since people seem to think it’s somehow a too adult thing to show. Watching Dragon maid, however, made me think of little Izetta and Finé. Izetta is smitten with Finé almost immediately. She looks at her and thinks that she’s looking at a princess which is especially cute when you think that Izetta’s probably never even seen royalty in real life before. She just looks at this beautiful girl that she’s just meet and thinks that she must be a princess and we get to see this play out in Izetta’s head from her point of view.
Izetta looks over at Finé while they’re lying on the dock and isn’t listening to a word that she’s saying. This is a habit that gets repeated later by adult Izetta, she’s just way too distracted looking at Finé to listen to a single word that she’s saying. Finé also has this sort of other worldly glow about her. The sun is shining on the water reflecting off of Finé’s bright hair and it’s messed with the feeling of time that the scene has. It feels like time has stopped, like Izetta and Finé have become lost in their own little world together. A place that’s bright and beautiful and where no one can tell them they can’t be together and that’s exactly what Izetta’s feeling about the whole thing.
In Izetta’s eyes this can’t be happening. In Izetta’s eyes this is too good to be true. Things like this don’t happen to someone like her who’s been poor and abused her whole life, but it’s happening. Through Izetta’s eyes the world is bright. Through Izetta’s eyes Finé is bright. Finé is what she’s always been searching for without even knowing it. There’s no way Finé would be anything less than glowing through Izetta’s eyes. Finé is already so important to her and being able to see that connection in Izetta’s eyes allows the audience to make that connection too. Izetta and Finé are important to each other, we’ve learned that with them.
Tumblr media
Izetta’s perspective then shifts drastically when tragedy strikes. Izetta is attacked by angry villagers who think she set fire to their shed, willing to attack Izetta without any real evidence that she actually did it. This may not be a particularly uncommon thing to happen in Izetta’s life but at the end of the day she’s still a child. She’s still terrified, terrified of being hurt and dying but also terrified that she’ll lose control of her powers and hurt someone when she didn’t mean to. To Izetta the world that was bright with Finé in it has become dark again. The whole scene is in dark sepia tone. Lots of dark browns and maybe even the smallest hint of red mixed in. The people that Izetta sees have no distinguishable face. To her they all blend together like a child having a nightmare about monsters. In Izetta’s eyes they’re all the same, just more people who want to hurt her.
Finé then rushes to Izetta’s aid and takes the blow of a pitch fork for her. Finé is the only one who’s face Izetta sees clearly and the only other one in color but that doesn’t mean that Izetta is glad that she came. Izetta’s eyes focus in on the red blood at Finé’s side, the only other thing to have full deep color in the scene, and she takes her full attention off of the people attacking her. Tears appear in Izetta’s eyes and it’s obvious that this is a situation that will be with them for the rest of their lives. All Izetta wanted to do was to be with this person who cared about her and now thanks to her she’s been hurt. There may have been people out for her life but Izetta only had eyes for Finé. The faces of the mob never came into focus. She was never really looking at them. When Finé turns around to face Izetta her gaze never leaves Finé’s face.
We know Izetta will carry this guilt with her for the rest of her life. She can’t take her eyes off the wound that she feels like was her fault. In Izetta’s eyes the world still hasn’t regained its color, even though Finé is with her and even though her life is saved. She just wanted this person that made her happy to be happy.
Izetta then says that once she saw Finé smile she knew that she would do anything for her. Finé has become so important to Izetta that she would do anything for her to happy. In Izetta’s eyes Finé did what no one else would do for her. She stood by her side and protected her even when it was life threatening to do so. In Izetta’s eyes Finé may not be glowing anymore but she’s still bright. She’s still in full color in a world that’s dark and gray. In Izetta’s eyes Finé’s smile is perfect, she may be in pain and bleeding but she’s still smiling and smiling only for her. In Izetta’s eyes she’s not worthy of that smile, she’s not worthy of being protected but since someone thinks that she is, she’ll stop at nothing to protect that smile. Finé has now become irreplaceable to Izetta. She’s developed a bond that will keep them together even in the face of more tragedy. Finé and Izetta are now invaluable to each other and by seeing that through Izetta’s eyes, we’ve learned that with them.

That same perspective Izetta sees is then repeated many years later once they’ve grown up. Izetta sees Finé stand for what she believes in once more with her arms outstretched in front of her. Seeing her childhood traumas replayed in front of her is enough to snap her right out of her coma and spring her into action. The only thing that Izetta is able to see is the tragedy that hurt her so much as a kid repeating itself right in front of her. She sees it from almost the exact same angle as well with her lying on the ground and Finé standing above her. There’s no way that Izetta would continue to lie there and watch this happen again. She’s seen it once, she already refused to let it happen again.
In Izetta’s eyes she sees the person she loves hurt once again. She makes the connection immediately and moves into action so fast that she tears the whole plane apart in her haste to do something. Izetta is no longer a kid and won’t sit back to watch Finé be hurt again. She knows that it’s her even before she turns around, recognizing her by the tone of her voice even though it’s been years and Finé’s voice has deepened. In Izetta’s eyes this cannot happen again. She refuses to let it happen again. She sees the new wound on Finé’s side and her eyes snap into focus. She’s going to do something now to make up for what she couldn’t do years ago. Izetta is now more than determined to use all her power to protect Finé no matter what happens. She will not let this happen again and once again, we as the audience gain the same conviction as her.

Izetta’s perspective begins to shift in a big way after she fights for Finé’s army in episode 3. She comes flying back to Finé after having destroyed most of the enemy tanks and troops. At first Izetta can’t bring herself to look at Finé, almost like she’s worried that Finé is going to be mad at her for running off and joining the fight when she told her not to. She keeps her eyes turned to the ground just like she did when she was a kid, worried that she was going to be yelled at or attacked. She finally turns to look at Finé however when Finé rushes forward to hug her, full of tears.
Izetta’s eyes are wide with shock. She truly never thought that Finé would be so worried about her that she would cry like that. In Izetta’s eyes she wasn’t worth that kind of worry or kindness. Izetta thought that it was just her dedicated so much to Finé that she would go and fight a war for a country that she has no ties to. Izetta learns very quickly, however, that this is not the case. Finé loves Izetta just as much as Izetta loves Finé. Finé didn’t want her to join the fight not because she didn’t think that Izetta could do it, but because she didn’t want Izetta to get hurt.
Izetta watches Finé cry into her shoulder and gently run her hands through her and gets it for the first time. In Izetta’s eyes she wasn’t worthy of love. In Izetta’s eyes the princess was too good for her but as Finé tearfully thanks her for what she’s done and how glad she is that she’s ok Izetta finally gets it. Finé truly and unconditionally loves her and would never want to see her hurt just like she doesn’t want to see Finé hurt.
In Izetta’s eyes she’s finally worth something and Finé was the one that made her realize it. In Izetta’s eyes Finé has become someone that she truly loves and respects with all her heart. Someone that’s sad when she’s gone. Someone that worries when she’s hurt. Someone who wants her to come home safe no matter what.
We see Finé cry over Izetta through Izetta’s eyes and Izetta learns that she’s not alone. Izetta hugs Finé back and they truly embrace each other for the first time on their own terms. Izetta learns that Finé cares about her just as much as she does and by seeing that through Izetta’s eyes, we learn this as well.
Things continue on in this way for a while. Izetta sees Finé break down over the death of her father and learns that Finé truly loved her father and all that he did and that she will now be burdened with carrying the whole country on her back just as he did.
She sees Finé freak out over her love of pie and learns that Finé has a silly side that would only come out more if they didn’t live in such a time of hardship and war.

We continue on this way until we get to episode 7 and the scene that I have previously talked about. Since I’ve already written about this scene I’ll try not to repeat myself too much but there is more to talk about since I’m coming at this from a different angle this time.
This is about where I’d say that Izetta begins to see Finé on the same level. She sees Finé in all her royalty and is so smitten by her that she can barely look at her without blushing but it’s also where Izetta and Finé look at each other while lying on the bed together and really get to spend a quiet moment alone together. They talk to each other in a very close, intimate setting and you can almost see them bonding. We see Finé hold Izetta’s hand from Izetta’s point of view and we can see how unwavering her gaze is. She looks Finé straight on just like she did on the dock back when they were just kids. So much has changed now, however, that I can hardly say they’re that similar.
Finé and Izetta have grown so close that this scene carries a weight that the previously mentioned scene does not. In Izetta’s eyes Finé is now someone that she loves, someone she’s so close to that they can lay together on the same bed and just exist in the same space as equals. They never let go of each other’s hands. Finé only looks away from Izetta’s eyes to inch closer to her and hold her hand even tighter. Both look like they might cry at any moment but both also look like they don’t want to speak too loud and ruin the mood. It’s a scene that screams of intimacy and love and respect and understanding. It’s a scene that could not have happened just a few episodes ago.
In Izetta’s eyes Finé is beautiful and royal and powerful but she is also young and vulnerable and ready to cry and break down at any moment. She is strong but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t feel. She worries about Izetta even now, those feelings from before have not lessened or gone away but rather they’ve only gotten stronger. In Izetta’s eyes Finé is now family. In Izetta’s eyes she would do anything to reassure her so she doesn’t have to cry. In Izetta’s eyes she’s in love. By watching that connection through Izetta’s eyes, we learn that too.

Finally, I think it’s appropriate to end on the scene that the culmination of their character development with each other. The Scene where Izetta finally calls Finé by her name. Izetta and Finé fly through the woods at night, just like they did when they were kids and connect with each other on a level that only they could. This scene feels similar in a lot of ways to the bed one in its love and intimacy but instead of having a serious conversation the bulk of the first half consists of pure love and fluff.
Izetta once again is too nervous and shy to look Finé in the eye but Finé is having none of that as she pulls Izetta’s face to look at her. We see Finé through Izetta’s eyes and we can see just how much love and longing there is on her face. Izetta calls her Finé again and again and you can just feel how long they’ve both waited for this. For Izetta this has been everything that she’s been waiting for. They’ve both worked so hard to reach this point, fought countless battles, grew closer and closer together only to reach this point. A point where they can look each other in the eye and say how they feel. A point where Izetta can call Finé by her name and finally feel on equal terms with her.
In some sense Izetta may have been searching her whole life for this. A place where she belongs, a place where she can be herself. Izetta found that in Finé, she found that in Eylstadt. In Izetta’s eyes this is it. This is what she’s worked so hard for. In Izetta’s eyes Finé is here and she’s real and she’s perfect. In Izetta’s eyes Finé is once again bright and colorful and full of life, just like when they were kids with so much less to worry about. In Izetta’s eyes she is so head over heels in love with this person that she’d do anything so that she’d be safe. She would fight a million more wars for her and in the end, I feel as though that’s the best strength of Shuumatsu no Izetta. Izetta and Finé share a bond that cannot be broken even the face of great tragedy and war but it didn’t just happen. It was forged through years and years of growing closer to one another.
In Izetta’s eyes Finé and her are bonded for life. In Finé’s eyes, she sees the same thing.
