More Phantasy Star stuff! PS3 is definitely the black sheep of the family, but the generation mechanic was pretty neat and getting a different version of characters depending on what route you took is cool too!

So I just finished watching the last season of Supergirl, which made me remember the medieval au I created with a friend a long time ago and decided to find it in my computer's archives. I will most likely never finish the entire story, but it was so much fun writing it that I thought I'd share some of it. It's fluffy and cute, I hope you like it!
An impromptu visit to another sovereign’s castle was the sort of thing that was absolutely frowned upon, but the princess of Jorden had waited enough to hear anything from the royal of the House of El. She was aware of the endless duties Lady Kara had to attend to as commander of the Knights of Krypton, but she couldn’t help the irrepressible need to be close to the blonde. Despite the consequences, she was willing to take the utmost risks to spend any time with the princess of Krypton, however brief. Aided by Barry, one of her most trusted servants, Lena snuck out of the house of Luthor through the lower dungeons, wearing Kara’s cloak over her head. Right by the bridge that separated the castle from the commonwealth, her royal blacksmith and dearest friend Maggie awaited on her horse, wearing a dark cloak on her own.
“Are you certain this is the kind of place to be flaunting that, your Highness?” the blacksmith said to her in a whisper as soon as she saw the green-eyed girl, pointing at the red cloak with her chin.
“It’s the middle of the night,” Lena responded, resting its importance, and holding the crest of the house of El on the cloak closer to her. “As a matter of fact, I’m bringing it with me to give it back.”
Maggie let out a chuckle as she helped her friend get on the horse, and she said, “I believe you’ve been saying that for a long time now.”
“I don’t want to hear it,” Lena replied, thankful that her friend couldn’t notice the pink shade that appeared on her face. “Let’s just go.”
“As you wish, milady,” Maggie said, teasingly, pulling the cord around the horse and heading towards the deep forest that separated the kingdoms of Jorden and Krypton, their only way to avoid the guards at the wall.
“Thank you for doing this,” the princess of Jorden said, sincerely. “I know I’m putting your job at risk.”
“Don’t mention it,” the other girl replied. “If I lose my job, you’ll just have to ask your girlfriend to get me a place in her castle.”
“I think you’re just looking for excuses to be closer to the future queen of Krypton.”
“Oh, that would be marvelous,” Maggie said, unable to avoid the smirk that appeared on her face, placing a hand on the leather strap of the bag over her shoulder. “Those Kryptonian girls had to be so beautiful.”
Lena noticed the bag falling on the right side of the horse, kicking it very softly and colliding with something heavy. She raised an eyebrow. “What have you brought?”
“It is none of your business,” the blacksmith said, keeping her eyes ahead, “but, if you must know, it’s a gift for Princess Alex. I figured that this was the perfect opportunity for such a thing.”
“Did you make another sword for her?” the green-eyed girl asked teasingly, clearly amused.
“No,” Maggie said, rolling her eyes, trying not to think about her last failed attempt at trying to charm the future queen. “It’s a bow and arrow. I saw her competing with your princess the last time we were there. I have never seen a talent like hers in my life before. I just had to make something worthy of her.”
“Oh, Maggie. When did we become these people?”
“Those girls of Krypton, princess. Those girls of Krypton.”
As a result of their time spent with the forest-loving Danvers sisters, they rode through the night until they were deep between the trees, safe from being caught by Jordenian guards, without any fear that the forest would betray them. Maggie set up a fire to keep them warm until the sunrise and set off to sleep, but Lena could barely stay still. She spent the rest of the night staring at the starred sky, waiting for dawn to break. Once it did, the young blacksmith and the princess resumed their journey to the emerald kingdom, only to find Lady Kara’s handsome squire, Winslow Schott, waiting by the entrance of the forest on a beautiful brown horse, the golden emblem of the house of El clearly noticeable over his chest.
“Your highness, Lady Sawyer,” he said solemnly, bowing before both ladies. “Your servant Barry Allen informed of your visit and I am here to ensure your safe arrival to the castle.”
“Barry? How is that even possible?” Lena inquired, quite bewildered. “He was the last person I saw before I left Jorden.”
“He sent a letter with your plans to Sir Olsen in advance, your highness. He said something about being ‘proactive’ and ‘faster than anyone in your guard’, I presume. I assure you, no one else knows you’re here.”
“Well, I am very grateful, Mr. Schott.”
“Please,” the tall man said, offering both girls a shy soft smile. “Call me Winn.”
“Winn, it is, then,” Lena said, returning the smile.
“Winn, do you happen to know the whereabouts of the royals?” Maggie asked, trying to seem nonchalant and failing miserably at it.
“Princess Alexandra went on her morning horse ride with Sir Jonn’z,” Winn replied. “and Lady Kara is at swordfight practice with Sir Olsen. Both princesses should be back at the palace by midday.”
“Perfect,” the dark-haired blacksmith said with a sly smile on her face and she got off the horse, to Lena’s bafflement. She turned to the squire. “Winn, would you be so kind to escort Princess Lena to the castle?”
“Where are you going?” Lena inquired.
Her friend just smirked. “I have my own plans to impress my princess. I’ll find you later—if you’re not too busy, of course.” Lena rolled her eyes as she tried to contain the smile creeping on her face and watched her friend walk away and disappear amongst the people of the kingdom of Krypton.
“Shall we?” the man asked, pulling at the cord around his horse to move forward. The princess of Jorden blinked a couple of times and nodded, pulling at her own horse and riding by his side. The journey to the palace of Krypton wasn’t very long from their starting point, but it seemed endless to the eager green-eyed girl that had been looking forward to seeing the blonde for longer than she was willing to admit. In addition to that, Kara had mentioned her squire countless times in their conversations—she considered him and Sir James Olsen part of her family—and in those conversations, he seemed to be a spirited and charming man. Around her, however, even when she would try to make conversation, Winn appeared impossibly quiet. Miffed, even. She usually wouldn’t mind if a man wasn’t interested in chatting with her, but this was one of the people that the girl she was trying to impress held with the highest regard. She had to try.
“Winn, have I done something to offend you?”
“Pardon, your Highness?” He asked, sounding puzzled.
“Princess Kara never stops speaking of how much of a delight her squire is to be around. Yet, I’ve received nothing but silence and polite words from you. Is it something I did?”
“No, of course not, my lady.”
“What is it, then?”
Winn glanced at her with eyes filled with mistrust, but he was quick to look away as soon as the princess caught his eye. “You’re wearing Princess Kara’s cloak.”
Inevitably, she looked down at the bright red cloth over her hunter-green gown. “Is that an issue?”
“No, it’s just—,” Winn clicked his tongue. “It belonged to King Jeremiah.” His olive-green eyes traveled down to the cloak. “Lady Kara wore it every day of her life ever since the King and the Queen passed away, just as Princess Alexandra does with the Queen’s,” he looked back to the path in front of him. “That, of course, before she met you.”
“I see.”
“And I don’t mean to offend you, your Highness, but I’ve been around for a long time and I know the type of people the royals of Jorden tend to be.”
“Ah, so the issue is that I am a Luthor.”
“I’m just concerned for Lady Kara’s well-being,” the squire responded. “My job is to serve and protect her, after all.”
“I appreciate your honesty, Winn,” the princess said in return. “But rest assured, I care deeply about Kara—I would not be here if it were not that way.”
“As I said, my top priority is Lady Kara’s well-being.”
“As it is mine. You have my word.”
“Very well, then,” Winn said, clearly more at ease. “I must inform you that Lady Kara will be absolutely pleased with your visit.”
“Is that so?” Lena inquired, incapable to contain the grin that appeared across her face.
“She has been unable to talk of much else but you, my lady,” Winn answered, finally returning the smile. “In fact, several knights have asked for a meeting with your Highness to thank you for keeping our Lady Kara in good spirits. She can be quite difficult when she’s in bad temper.”
Lena let out a laugh. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen Lady Kara in bad temper.”
“Oh, you don’t want to, my lady…”
A now comfortable conversation carried on as they arrived at the castle, making a quick stop for Lena to pick up a flower and where the young squire insisted to accompany the princess to the young knight’s chambers. They parted ways at the door, but not without Winn assuring her that no one was set to disturb her before lady Kara arrived. After thanking the man, the green-eyed girl walked into Kara’s chambers and soaked in that familiar essence of burning firewood that always seemed to surround the blonde Kryptonian. She walked towards the bed, still holding the flowers of pink petals in her hand, and sat by the edge, running her hand through the burgundy sheets that covered the mattress. She imagined her beloved, peacefully resting after a long day with her blonde locks fanning over the pillow, and she felt a warm sensation take over her body.
She sighed, undoing the knot that kept the strings of the cloak together, and took it off, putting it over the bed softly right after. There, surrounded by all those things that reminded her how real the blonde knight was, she felt safe, in a way she never would in her own palace. Perhaps that was the reason her eyelids began falling under the weight of exhaustion, her body finally asking for the slumber it had been deprived of the night before. Lena laid her head over Kara’s pillow, letting herself get lost in the essence left behind, just for a moment.
She didn’t want to miss a single moment she could get to spend with her fellow princess.
~~~
The moon reigned the night with its mighty glow beaming over every path that lead to the palace of the house of El, as it followed the steps of the fair and exhausted young knight making her way back to her chambers. she walked down the dim-lit empty halls as she untied her hair, moving her head side to side in a slow-motion, letting her blonde curls fall free over her back. She undid the laces on the wrists of her white silk blouse, folding her sleeves up to her elbows, before running her fingers over the skin of her chest that the low cut of her blouse left exposed. She would never regret her decisions—her royal duties gave her a sense of purpose that kept her going but that didn’t mean she didn’t have days when she wished she could escape and run to the arms of the green-eyed princess that hadn’t left her mind since she saw her last. At other times, she would have done it in a heartbeat, but with her sister’s coronation so near, she needed to make sure everything within the emerald kingdom was running smoothly. Regardless of the impossibility of seeing her beloved before the coronation, the simple thought of the princess of Jorden was enough to make Kara smile.
Upon arriving at her chambers, however, her mind went blank. Her weariness, her thoughts, even her name escaped her as soon as she walked in and found the single most breathtaking sight she had ever laid eyes upon. Kara would remember it for the remaining of her days, she knew as much.
A dark brown mane spread all over her pillows, as the intruder it belonged to slept soundly under the familiar red cloth of Kara’s cloak, which the intruder had borrowed months before. Her hand hung off the edge of the bed, holding a flower that had lost some petals, hinting at the idea that it had been there a long time. Kara’s ocean blue eyes followed the flower up to the gentle features of her fellow princess, so angelical that Kara was no longer convinced she was real. She bit her lip and moved towards the bed, taking off her boots as she did so, and sat on the edge of the bed, careful not to wake up the sleeping beauty. The blonde wasn’t sure what was the feeling in her chest anymore—a mixture of an everlasting lust that had been burning up her insides for a long time, only to culminate in an unmeasurable amount of pure, honest love that she had never felt before. The princess of Krypton tried to fight the urge to touch the other girl’s skin, but her emotions were stronger than she could have ever been. She ran a playful finger along the dark-haired woman’s side, before reaching for her rosy cheek and stroking it, gently.
“Lena,” Kara muttered, unable to stop the smile that formed on her face when she spoke the princess of Jorden’s name. “it’s time to wake.”
Lena shifted in her position, facing Kara, but did not wake. Kara’s smile only got wider. “Lena,” she said once more, louder. “Rise and shine, my lady.”
This time, Lena’s green eyes fluttered open, taking a few seconds and blinking to take notice of her surroundings, still in between slumber and reality, not sure if Kara really was there with her or if she was only dreaming. She smiled at the thought, nonetheless. Kara stroked her cheek once more and the touch made Lena close her eyes. It felt too real to be a dream.
“It took you long enough, princess,” Lena started, pulling the red cloth covering her closer to her chest and keeping her eyes closed. “I didn’t mean to fall asleep. I’m sorry.”
“I didn’t know you were here, I would have cut short my activities had I known.”
“That’s okay, I did need some rest.”
Kara continued to softly run the back of her fingers over Lena’s cheek and the green-eyed girl nonchalantly leaned into the touch, instinctively placing a soft kiss as she did so.
“Someone should have called me either way,” Kara replied, and Lena smiled, finally letting her emerald eyes get lost in the blue sea in front of her. Kara’s heart stopped for a second.
“It doesn’t matter,” Lena said. “You’re here now.”
Kara tried to reply but her voice got caught in her throat, unable to tear her eyes from what stood right in front of her. She decided to let her actions speak for her instead and leaned in to press her lips to Lena’s mouth. Lena sighed contently and returned the gesture. No matter how many times it had been done, every kiss would always feel like the first. The princess of Jorden wrapped her arms around Kara’s neck as she sat to be at the same level as her lover, with a certain eagerness that made an unknown feeling tumble inside the chest of the princess of Krypton. The blonde placed her hands over the waist of the other girl, pressing their bodies together. Lena’s hands escalated to Kara’s hair, tangling her long pale fingers amongst blonde curls as the knight deepen the kiss and let one of her hands roam freely over the green fabric covering Lena’s abdomen, searching for the string to untie her gown. Once she found it, the blonde pulled away, giving the other princess a questioning glance before continuing her quest. Lena bit her lip and nodded, keeping her eyes on Kara’s as the young warrior began undressing her, her breathing hitching with every piece of clothing that fell on the ground. The princess of Jorden had been preparing for this for a long time—perhaps ever since she ever laid eyes on the knight—but that didn’t stop the nerves from arising. When Kara took off the very last piece of clothing that covered Lena’s skin, her cheeks immediately turned to the brightest shade of pink. She looked away from the other girl’s blue eyes, slightly embarrassed, absentmindedly reaching for the cloak to cover herself. Nevertheless, Kara stopped her movements gently, holding her hand into hers, never tearing her eyes off Lena.
“Don’t,” Kara finally managed to get out with a low and deeper voice than she intended. She cleared her throat. “Do not, ever again.”
The pink in Lena’s face turned into a bright shade of red. “Kara…”
The blonde moved closer to her, connecting her eyes with Lena’s as she cupped her face. Lena never felt as vulnerable as she did right there. “You’re gorgeous,” Kara whispered, touching the tip of Lena’s nose with her own. Lena felt like her heart was a second away from collapsing. “The most beautiful woman I’ve ever laid eyes upon.”
Kara moved forward, intending to close the gap between them, very painfully slow. She brushed Lena’s lips with her own before Lena couldn’t take it anymore and hungrily took the blonde’s lower lip between hers. Lena held onto blonde locks and Kara’s hands traveled down to Lena’s back, finding her waist and pulling her as close as humanly possible, as their mouths moved in sync, dancing to a song only they knew the notes to, sending shivers down both their spines.
Time simply stopped. They found themselves trapped in an eternity that encapsulated their very souls. All they could feel in that moment was a sentiment much larger than anything they had ever known. Lena moved forward and sat on Kara’s lap, wrapping her legs around her. Kara lost any sort of will and empowerment she had ever possessed and, soaked in Lena’s perfume, she was ready to do anything the princess of Jorden asked for. From that moment on, she belonged to no other but Lena. Kara left a trail of silky kisses over Lena’s neck and down to her cleavage, kisses that said much more than any gentle word ever could. Lena responded with small moans and heavy gasps as she pulled at the knight’s hair a little harder than she meant to and that only made Kara want to go even further. Lena slipped her cold hands under Kara’s shirt and she gasped, which the green-eyed girl took as an invitation to bite on her lip. Lena pulled away, reaching for the hem of Kara’s shirt and pulling it over her head, throwing it off the bed. Then, placing her hands over Kara’s now exposed shoulders, she joined their lips into a slow, passionate kiss that took Kara’s breath away. Their rhythm became gentle and smooth, up to the point they were only exchanging heartfelt short kisses. Kara took this moment to look into Lena’s eyes, so dark and deep that everything happening within those four walls felt like a sin, yet still so gentle and loving as they had always been, making her feel at home. Lena sighed, joyfully, and placed her forehead against Kara’s.
“Hi,” she said, and the blonde smiled, kissing her once more.
“Hi,” Kara replied, nuzzling her nose against Lena’s again.
Lena moved her hands across Kara’s chest, shyly cupping her breasts. Kara closed her eyes at the touch, containing herself, as Lena’s hands moved downwards, reaching for Kara’s belt and undoing it. Kara held onto Lena’s lower back and pushed her into the bed, positioning herself on top of her dark-haired lover. Lena pulled down the young knight’s trousers, eager to finally marvel at that body she had been aching to explore. Kara didn’t give her even a second, however, before she gently pressed her bare body against Lena’s, earning a soft gasp from the princess of Jorden. Lady Luthor was trying her very best to stay quiet but with each wet kiss Kara left on her skin, she found it harder to keep it to herself. After what seemed like an eternity, between heavy breaths and desperately urgent kisses, Lena reached the highest point of ecstasy, with the four letters of the knight’s name ringing on her lips. Kara never spoke of that night to anyone, but her name never sounded the same on anybody else’s lips again. In Lena’s arms, Kara found the safety she had lacked her entire life, which lasted much after the sun rose above the tall trees of the forest and slipped between Kara’s opened curtains. Even then, with only Kara’s cloak to cover them, they couldn’t get enough of each other.
It was one of the biggest revelations of the young knight’s life. Unlike every other time she had gone through this, her motives weren’t driven only by lust or desire. It was a connection that went deeper than anything she had ever known, a union that not even Rao himself could have broken even if He tried. Right there, her legs tangled up with Lena’s, lost in the emerald sea of her eyes, among smooth kisses, unstoppable laughs, heavy breaths, and longing brushes of their skin aching to be close once more, the room got filled with the kind of love Kara had only seen and heard of once in her life. That kind of love that, the princess of Krypton was sure, could be felt in every corner of the emerald kingdom.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Lena whispered, running her finger over Kara's naked shoulder and taking her out of her thoughts.
The blonde looked at her with such intense blue eyes that Lena would have lost her footing had she been standing. "I finally get it."
"What is it that you get, princess?"
"When my parents' ship got lost at sea," Kara started, softly. "I couldn't understand why my father didn't fight harder for his life. He was a legend amongst our people, he had escaped impossible situations. I always felt like he could have made it out alive. It haunted me." Surprisingly, the young knight grinned. "But I understand it now," the blonde said as she reached for the other girl's cheek, touching it just slightly with the back of her fingers. "My mother was with him. And my father would have preferred to die next to her than to have to spend a second without her." She leaned over, cupping Lena's face and kissing her, quickly, softly, lovingly. "I get it now."
Lena held onto Kara’s back, taken aback by her words, and hid her face in the crook of her neck. She felt the words in her throat, those three words that she had been fighting to say since that very first horse ride, that first deep conversation, that first dance, that first drunken kiss. She knew that she didn’t have to hold it back any longer, but she hated to feel that vulnerable, that open to the possibility of getting hurt once more. But Kara lazily ran her hand down her lower back and she felt like there was nothing to fear with that simple touch. She breathed against Kara’s neck, making her shiver, and she said it, once and for all, ready to walk right into hell if that was what it entitled. “I love you,” simply left her lips and she felt Kara freeze in her arms. She bit her lip and hid her face even more into Kara’s neck.
“I love you,” Kara said, for the very first time, unable to contain the corners of her mouth from turning into a smile, fully aware that this undoubtedly was the greatest day of her life. Lena kissed Kara’s neck, and she felt the vibrations of her vocal cords against her lips when the blonde spoke again. “And I’m glad you’re here with me.”
“I never want to be anywhere else,” Lena replied, feeling how her tired eyes started closing again.
I keep thinking about (sapphic) alternate reality episodes where characters are willing to destroy the world they're in to get back to how things used to be with their beloved and/or best friend who is coded as their soulmate.
Like the Xena: Warrior Princess episode "When Fates Collide," where Gabrielle literally sets fire to the Fates' loom in order to get back to her life with Xena. And, upon their return to their own reality, Xena tells her, "You brought the world back to us."
Tumblr media
Or in Wynonna Earp "Gone As a Girl Can Get," when Waverly is willing to blow up a barn with her and Nicole inside in order to get back the world where they were lovers (and get back her sister, too, I suppose). Nicole tells her, "Where you go, I go."
Tumblr media
And then there's freaking Supergirl "It's a Super Life" where Kara employs her one wish from an interdimensional imp to repair her relationship with her best friend (ahem), Lena, and Lena in one seemingly perfect alternate reality tells Kara, "If we were partners, we could change the world," but Kara has to abandon that reality because she realizes she'd rather have Lena alive and hating her than risk her life.
Tumblr media
But tell me again they're not a couple...
What other examples are there of this trope because I *love* it?
