India's caste system assigns individuals a certain hierarchical status according to Hindu beliefs. Traditionally, there are four principal castes (divided into many sub-categories) and one category of people who fall outside the caste system—the Dalits. As members of the lowest rank of Indian society, Dalits face discrimination at almost every level: from access to education and medical facilities to restrictions on where they can live and what jobs they can have. The discrimination against the Dalits is especially significant because of the number of people affected; there are approximately 167 million Dalits in India, constituting over 16 percent of the total population.
Within the Dalit community, there are many divisions into sub-castes. Dalits are divided into leather workers, street sweepers, cobblers, agricultural workers, and manual "scavengers". The latter group, considered the lowest of the low and officially estimated at one million, traditionally are responsible for digging village graves, disposing of dead animals, and cleaning human excreta. Approximately three-quarters of the Dalit workforce are in the agricultural sector of the economy. A majority of the country’s forty million people who are bonded laborers are Dalits. These jobs rarely provide enough income for Dalits to feed their families or to send their children to school. As a result, many Dalits are impoverished, uneducated, and illiterate.
Dalits have been oppressed, culturally subjugated, and politically marginalized. The principals of untouchability and “purity and pollution” dictate what Dalits are and are not allowed to do; where they are and are not allowed to live, go, or sit; who they can and cannot give water to, eat with, or marry; extending into the minutia of all aspects of daily life.
Moreover, discrimination for Dalits does not end if they convert from Hinduism to another religion. In India, Islam, Sikhism, and Christianity (among other religions) maintain some form of caste despite the fact that this contradicts their religious precepts. As a result, dominant castes maintain leadership positions while Dalit members of these religions are often marginalized and flagrantly discriminated against. For example, Dalit Christains are provided seperate burial areas from non-Dalit Christains.
The origins of the caste system
The word Dalit—literally translating to “oppressed” or “broken”—is generally used to refer to people who were once known as “untouchables”, those belonging to castes outside the fourfold Hindu Varna system. According to the 2001 census, there are some 167 million Dalits (referred to in the census as “Scheduled Castes”) in India alone, though there are tens of millions in other South Asian countries, as well.
The caste system finds its origin in functional groupings, calledvarnas, which have their origins in the Aryan society of ancient northern India. In their creation myth, four varnas are said to have emanated from the Primeval Being. The Creator’s mouth became the Brahman priests, his two arms formed the Rajanya warriors and kings, his two thighs formed the Vaishya landowners and merchants, and from his feet were born the Shudra artisans and servants. Later, there developed a so-called “fifth” varna: the Untouchables.
This caste system became fixed and hereditary with the emergence of Hinduism and its beliefs of pollution and rebirth. The Laws of Manu (Manusmitri), which date roughly to the 3rd century A.D.—and parts of which form the Sanskrit syllabus of graduation studies in Gujarat even today—preach the sanctity of the varnas and uphold the principles of gradation and rank. They refer to the impurity and servility of the outcastes, while affirming the dominance and total impunity of Brahmins. Those from the “lowest” castes are told that their place in the caste hierarchy is due to their sins in a past life. Vivid punishments of torture and death are assigned for crimes such as gaining literacy or insulting a member of a dominant caste. Among the writings of Hindu religious texts, the Manusmitriis undoubtedly the most authoritative one, legitimizing social exclusion and introducing absolute inequality as the guiding principle of social relations.
Forced exclusion and constant oppression
Today, Dalits make up 16.2% of the total Indian population, but their control over resources of the country is marginal—less than 5%. Close to half of the Dalit population lives under the Poverty Line, and even more (62%) are illiterate. Among the Dalits, most of those engaged in agricultural work are landless or nearly landless agricultural laborers. The average household income for Dalits was of Rs. 17,465 in 1998, just 68% of the national average. Less than 10% of Dalit households can afford safe drinking water, electricity and toilets, which is indicative of their deplorable social condition. Moreover, Dalits are daily victims of the worst crimes and atrocities, far outnumbering other sections of society in that respect as well. The vast majority of these crimes remain unreported due to omnipresent fear, and those that are reported are often ignored by police or end up languishing in the backlogged court system. Between 1992 and 2000, a total of 334,459 cases were registered nation wide with the police as cognisable crimes against SCs.
More than 60 years after gaining Independence, India is still very much afflicted by the cancer of the caste system. Dalits remain the most vulnerable, marginalized and brutalised community in the country.
Dalits in Gujarat
If compared to states like Punjab, Himachal Pradesh or West Bengal where Dalits constitute more than 20 per cent of the population, Gujarat counts a fairly low proportion of Dalits.According to the 2001 Census, there are approximately 3.6 million members of Scheduled Castes in Gujarat, which represents 7.1% of the state’s total population. This relatively low figure is, however, inversely indicative of their miserable condition. More than 80 per cent of the Dalits in Gujarat are daily labourers, the majority of which are in the agricultural sector. Half of the SC population is landless or owns less than one acre of land, which forces them to work on dominant castes’ land in order to survive.
Because of this dependence and the quasi-inexistence of labour welfare in Gujarat, Dalits are subject to immense pressure and utter discrimination. Atrocities committed against them are a daily reality, with more than 4,000 cases reported in the span of 3 years in just 14 districts. Manual scavenging is still very much prevalent also, the State’s institutions in Gujarat themselves employing Dalits to clean dry latrines. For a State that likes to depict itself as a modern and thriving region in India, Gujarat is still a far cry away from ensuring social justice to all of its citizens. In reality, Gujarat has a poor human rights record and must extend and focus its attention to its minorities if it is to be worthy of the kind of image it likes to give itself.
The government of Gujarat has implemented certain policies designed to uplift those belonging to the Scheduled Castes into higher positions. The most prominent is the reservation system, where certain seats in the government are set aside only for Dalits. In Gujarat, 7% of seats in the government and education sectors are reserved for Dalits (as opposed to 14% set aside on the national level). This amounts to 2 of the 26 Members of Parliament (MP) and 13 of the 182 Members of Legislative Assemblies (MLA) currently held by members of the SC. There are also established reservation systems in place at the district, block, and village levels throughout the state.
Even with this promise of upliftment through reservation, Dalits continue to be discriminated against throughout Gujarat. The number of atrocity cases against Dalits and the practice of untouchability continue to occur at alarming rates throughout the state, especially when compared to other Indian states.
Dalits in other South Asian Countries
India’s caste system finds corollaries in other parts of the sub-continent, including Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Indeed, as Hinduism spread from northern India to the southern part of the peninsula establishing itself as the dominant religion by the pre-Christian era, so spread the caste system and its ideology justifying the superior standing of the system’s aristocracy. Caste even migrated with the South Asian diaspora to firmly take root in East and South Africa, Mauritius, Fiji, Suriname, the Middle East, Malaysia, the Caribbean, the United Kingdom, and North America. Nevertheless, Asia remains the continent with the largest share of Dalits. There are today in Asia well over 200 million men, women and children enduring near complete social ostracism on the grounds of their descent.
In both Bangladesh and Nepal, the types of discrimination faced by Dalits are very similar to those existing in India. Notions of purity and pollution are prevalent within society, social restrictions, and discrimination in access to public places or jobs are therefore commonplace. Nepal’s situation is noteworthy as not even a fringe of the 4.5 million Dalits (over 20% of the Nepalese population) has been able to significantly emancipate itself. With no affirmative action measures, there are practically no Dalits in Nepal’s legislative assemblies. The literacy rate of Nepalese Dalits is only around 10%, while that of Nepalese Dalit women is even lower. Over 80% of Nepal’s Dalits find themselves below the official poverty line; their life expectancy is not higher than 50 years.
In Pakistan, as well as in Sri Lanka (except Tamil regions), the caste system is somewhat less rigid in the sense that it does not hold any ritual pollution concepts. However, features such as social distance and restricted access to land are still very much a reality. Moreover, the Swat region in northern Pakistan also practices extreme forms of humiliation against Dalits, and especially Dalit women.

Curtains Fall Lightly (Historical Noir)

Chapter I
At a leading manufacturer of aircraft, especially military aircraft, in the Summer and Autumn of 1963, events unfolded as described.
Philip Morris was a dying man, having received a dire prognosis from his physician. A leading contact between the firm and United States government agencies, he attempted to teach the much younger George Blythe to replace him, briefing Blythe on a situation as grim as Morris's own.
"Young man, you must understand that this company is under attack from within. It's not the Soviets primarily, but a woman named Rosalind Kerr, ostensibly a consulting advisor. Even I don't know who she works for, but she uses blackmail of our board and our employees to advance her own position, and what she wants, as far as I can tell, is an escalation of warfare, in any and all parts of the world, to increase sales of our aircraft, receiving a generous percentage in her own accounts of the resulting profits and cash flow."
"The compromising data is seldom obtained by Mrs. Kerr personally, you understand," continued Morris, "But by her mousy little male secretary, Joseph Wheedle, aptly named if ever anyone was. I have never seen anyone so good at a show of false humility, and he gains trust, and thereby ruins lives."
"Why does he share this information with Mrs. Kerr?" asked Blythe.
"Ah, that's the key. I have rumor and conjecture. I believe that Wheedle, some fifty years old and unmarried, may have homosexual tendencies, taboo to many, even illegal, and that most likely Mrs. Kerr knows this and compels him to share in her goals, and to share his ill-gotten gains with her."
Morris added a hint that perhaps Blythe should uncover proof of Wheedle's secret life, to leverage against him, and continued to explain the company's sinister cabal.
"Now, as you can see, Kerr is a woman, and not a young one, and Wheedle is a small man of little physical prowess. When blackmail is not an option, they have a man, Michael Pocius, though I am one of the few who knows Michael's real name. Nearly everyone calls him 'Clawboy'. He was born elsewhere, but by age fourteen, was a student in America, and at that age, did something so gruesome to the Principal of his school that the papers would not describe it, but the nickname Clawboy has been with him since. Do you remember the Cleveland murders of the 1930's? The ones even Eliot Ness couldn't solve? No? Well, such is your youth. I have every reason to believe Pocius was the culprit, though he deflected blame on to some mental hospital patient. Six foot three and never gave man or woman a quick death, he is as dangerous as they come, and he works for Kerr, who pays him well, though he will still hurt most anyone for sport."
"Why isn't he arrested?"
"Because Wheedle has compromising information on policemen and judges too."
"Surely, not all of this company is part of Mrs. Kerr's plot?"
"No, just those three, as far as I know. In this wing you will find Ramon Germanos, as he is legally known. It may be a poor translation of his Spanish name- he's from Mexico- but that is beside the point. He is a bitter bureaucrat who obstructs everyone in his path. His father died in a riot, I hear, and he hates the system for failing him."
"If he hates the system, isn't this company the essence of, well, the system?"
"Exactly, and from this very vantage point he can make life miserable for the people he quietly and, technically, law-abidingly hates, which is all of us."
"A job much like mine is done by the less experienced Leonard Collins. He is loyal, but much too impulsive for such secretive work, I believe. The one other person you'll need to know of is someone I know only as Three Eyes- never knew his real name. He's from India, I think, and every now and then you'll have to meet him at a planned location so he can give you the latest on Soviet aircraft, giving us, and the USA, a great advantage. Three Eyes is a spy, though I don't know who he works for- some say Britain, but I'm unsure, and now, if you'll excuse me, I am rather tired, so I'm going to rest in my office."
Tumblr media
Chapter II
Morris had not considered Ramon Germanos's wife, Jayne (maiden name unknown), important enough to mention, and this is understandable. As far as the world knew, she was a bleach blonde imitation of Marilyn Monroe, but without the talent. Relying on Ramon's money, she had a résumé of only a few unprofitable films of the lowest quality, such as "Snake Women of Acapulco"… or so she wished the world to believe.
Morris also failed to mention Trenchcoat, often just called Trench. His existence was considered something of a legend. From the aeronautics firm up to governments around the world, many had heard the legend of Trenchcoat, but most disbelieved in it. The stories went that he was supposed to live in an abandoned building somewhere near this airplane manufacturer, and though some CIA agents initially took the stories seriously enough to search abandoned buildings around the city, no trace of this semi-mythical being was found.
No one had ever seen Trench's face, though some claimed to have heard his voice, either by telephone, or in person, in his pitch black lair, they said, though these supposed witnesses were often less than credible. No one knew Trench's agenda or loyalties, or if he even existed, at least not until Mrs. Kerr's schemes brought matters to a head.
Finally, in my attempts to keep the stranger than fiction nature of this report comprehensive, there is Linda Aeons (real name unknown), the only person in America who could openly assert being a Soviet agent and remain at liberty, because no one believed her. Supposedly a Romanian immigrant, she would hang around important government and corporate buildings, point her fingers like a hypnotist, believing that she was hexing passersby, mainly the employees, go into strange dances, have conversations with spirits (or so she claimed)… aside from several stays in mental hospitals, which generally found her to be harmless, as she never became violent, no institution took Linda seriously.
Having apprised the reader of those involved, the reader can now understand what transpired that fateful year. (Excuse the poetic touch, dear reader.)
Tumblr media
Chapter III
George Blythe quickly became acquainted with the ways of Ramon Germanos. Blythe filed a report comparing American and Soviet aircraft, only to have Germanos interfere and claim it was "written unprofessionally". When Blythe asked how he should change it, Germanos replied, "You are supposed to be a professional. You should know." Thus, a report he could have finished in two days took four rewrites and three weeks to meet with Germanos's grudging approval.
Blythe once sneaked into Germanos's office, and found a treatise on anarchism. Confronting Germanos with it, Ramon explained it away as "understanding subversives- to defeat them, we must understand them." With what Morris had told him, however, Blythe doubted this explanation.
This soon became moot, however, as Germanos overplayed his hand attempting such obstructive tactics against Rosalind Kerr. Soon after this, photographs of a most graphic nature, proving what many already knew, became widely available within the firm, and to law enforcement, and to anyone else who wanted the information that they contained.
Ramon Germanos had married Jayne to keep up appearances, but much preferred men. His face was very recognizable in the photographs, but the other man's face could not be seen. Philip Morris, however, though by now like a walking cadaver, and straining to speak, insisted that the other man was Joseph Wheedle, and told Blythe that, to undermine Mrs. Kerr's schemes, Blythe needed to prove this.
"How could I prove it? We can't see his face."
"W-we [here a coughing fit interrupted Morris's speech]… we can see a scar on his ribs, near his left elbow… here. Prove Wheedle has this."
Blythe could think of only two ways of proving this: One would be to find some reason to have Wheedle throughly searched, but no such reason could be found. The other was far more distasteful to the very heterosexual, as some might later say, George Blythe, but he went through with it.
Not an unattractive young man from Wheedle's point of view, Blythe saw enough of Wheedle one night to be certain that yes, Joseph was the other man in the photo.
In the meanwhile, however, Ramon Germanos had done in himself, and Blythe, himself more than a little shaken over how he had to obtain the information on Wheedle, went off drinking at various bars during work hours, rather against regulations, and at one such bar, met with, it seemed, a grieving Jayne, but it was there and then that we would find that the sad-eyed blonde was a myth, and a cold heart and head lived beneath that façade.
Tumblr media
Chapter IV
A less than sober Blythe had mentioned to Leonard Collins his encounter with Wheedle, and Collins thought that he might try the same, but with the more drastic aim of ending Wheedle's life, hoping this would put an end to Mrs. Kerr's hold over the corporation. Ransacking Wheedle's place to make it look like a robbery, Collins reported to an abandoned building, an old warehouse, devoid of any lighting, proudly boasting of what he had done.
"I did it Trench. Got that little scoundrel once and for all, and even if Mrs. Kerr has his info, she'll be too scared now to act."
An eerie, quavering voice replied out of the darkness, none too pleased.
"You foolish whelp. Kerr has ten times the physical courage of Wheedle. You should have killed her to frighten him. Employing you was my biggest mistake. This is an easier death than Clawboy would give you."
A dim shadow in the room's darkness flung a knife at Collins, hitting his target, and Collins was never found.
Chapter V
At the bar, Jayne, red eyes and running makeup, seemed to be the most pitiable sight Blythe had ever seen, until his vision began to blur, and over he fell, dead. Jayne looked confused and frightened. The bartender assumed that George had just been drinking too much, and would soon recover.
Jayne kept up her dumb blonde act for about three blocks, then her face set to stone, and she got in a car with an up-to-date telephone, calling the man Collins would refer to as Trench.
"Blythe was drinking on the job. I made the drink his last."
"You always were one for drastic action, but I suppose weak wills have no place in our line," replied the same strange, quavering voice, though distorted a bit by the phone.
"Say, Trench, aren't you concerned someone might bug our phones?"
"No, because the man they send to do that had a car accident, Jayne. They don't make brake lines so reliably in those foreign makes."
Needless to say, even when coroners found the poison, no one suspected the grieving, not overbright widow, as they reckoned her, but authorities were out looking for someone who fit their idea of a dangerous spy or criminal.
"One more thing before you hang up, Jayne: You must act against Mrs. Kerr now. Wheedle swore revenge if anyone got him, and something terrible is coming. Kerr would take full advantage of it. No time to explain. Take care of her. You know how."
Tumblr media
Chapter VI
Jayne, seemingly an intoxicated mess, sobbing for "Ramon", went to Kerr's home, as if to seek a maternal figure. Kerr disdained the girl utterly, considering her, as she had once said to Wheedle, "a waste of hair dye", but did not want Jayne to make a scene outside her home, a home always watched by agents of more than one country.
Inviting Jayne, who acted as if she could barely stand, into her home, Mrs. Kerr sent Carlos, her servant, to get coffee for Jayne. By the time Carlos returned, Jayne had already dispatched with Mrs. Kerr, using Dim Mak, I am told. As an unfortunate witness, a petrified Carlos discovered that Jayne, like Trench, was an adept thrower of knives.
Rosalind Kerr being gone, Clawboy had no loyalties, but would continue to be the most physically dangerous criminal on the streets, for profit and sport, beginning with an armored car robbery in early November, 1963, an incident that left two guards dead.
What Trench said about Joseph Wheedle's threats was, according to the best sources, true. He had threatened more than once that if anything happened to him, he had a "Communist cell" that would "remove" the most important man on Wheedle's long list of compromised individuals, and the "cell" did so, on November 22, 1963.
Chapter VII
By the end of November, several more robberies and deaths, some too terrible to describe, marked wherever Clawboy had traveled, hitting several cities so that a pattern would not, by most, be noticed.
Some took notice, however, including Jayne. She was back on the car phone.
"I know Clawboy has no agenda anymore, but in a way, he is off his leash. Enough more of this, especially if he did too much in one city, and it would worsen the crisis in public trust that is already inevitable, after what happened to the President, and given what the new President is."
"You are correct, Jayne," said the by now familiar, quavering voice, "And I intend to act."
"You know better than anyone where he is, Trench. Just tell me and I'll do it."
"Jayne, have you ever read of Clawboy's idea of amusement back in Cleveland? You are a deadly woman, but if you and Clawboy ever met, you would go that way. I must insist. The only person alive better at violence than Clawboy is me, and I must do this one personally."
Tumblr media
Chapter VIII
A limping, elderly hobo hobbled down a rural road not far from Baltimore. A blue Bel Air drove up behind him, driven by a grinning Michael Pocius, who thought he would play some games with the old man.
Clawboy drove the car directly at the hobo. There were no witnesses in sight, so it was just the two of them. The old man managed to throw himself to one side, but could not return to his feet. Pocius parked his car on a dime, and got out, strutting triumpantly and chuckling, pulling out a knife in his gloved hands, one with a finely carved handle.
The transient seemed resigned to his fate, smoking one last cigarette, as Clawboy, like Trench and Jayne, was about to practice his knife throwing skills, but suddenly, Pocius fell over, and was obviously no longer living when he hit the ground.
The "cigarette" had been a blowgun, and one assumes, the "elderly hobo" was an elaborate disguise of Trenchcoat.
Philip Morris passed away in 1964, and last I heard, Three Eyes and Linda Aeons had joined a commune in the vicinity of San Francisco, California.
Sincerely,
Trenchcoat

Gasly pleased to give Alpine positive memories after turbulent weekend | 2023 Belgian Grand Prix
Pierre Gasly said he was pleased to bring some cheer to Alpine amid a turbulent weekend for the team by finishing third in Saturday’s sprint race. The result came 24 hours after Alpine announced the departures of team principal Otmar Szafnauer and sporting director Alan Permane. It followed days of speculation around the team following the previous departure of CEO Laurent Rossi, and Alpine’s slump to sixth in the constructors’ championship behind McLaren. Speaking in response to a question from RaceFans, Gasly said he’d tried to put the off-track drama out of his mind during the weekend. “Personally, I’ve got to focus on what I do on the track and try to bring the best I can from every single session and that’s what I’ve been focusing on,” he said. However he said it was clear the team, which finished fourth in the championship last year, had failed to meet expectations over the first half of 2023. “Obviously, I think everyone’s disappointed with the start of the year, we didn’t perform straight from the start as well as we should have and there hasn’t really been the progress that we all would have liked,” said Gasly. “But obviously I’ve just joined six months ago, I don’t know the past history and it’s quite a lot of changes also for me, like just coming in the team and relying on new people and then all these changes. But, I think everybody needs to sit down and kind of process what’s happened, just refresh and start fresh in Zandvoort.” Gasly started Saturday’s sprint race from sixth on the grid and rose to finish third behind Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri. As Alpine also came to terms with the departure of chief technical officer Pat Fry to Williams, Gasly said his result gave the team some satisfaction at a difficult time. “Everything’s quite fresh. So obviously sit down during the summer and go over all of that. But we tried to just stay focussed on the job this weekend. “I’m glad we managed to get a trophy, even if it’s a small one. I’m glad we managed to get a trophy yesterday for the last weekend of Alan, Otmar and Pat, at least it makes some positive memories.” Gasly’s team mate Esteban Ocon also worked with Szafnauer while the pair were at Force India in 2017 and 2018. “I’ve been working with him for many years and I shared a lot of great moments with him,” said Ocon. “I wish them the best for the future,” he added. “But obviously I am completely focussed on the job I have to do and my job is to be the fastest behind the wheel I can be.” Advert | Become a RaceFans supporter and go ad-free 2023 Belgian Grand Prix Browse all 2023 Belgian Grand Prix articles via RaceFans - Independent Motorsport Coverage https://www.racefans.net/

What was inside the UK national pavilion at Expo 2010? Did anyone get in there? Maybe they could pass on the inside dope? Because one thing is for sure, if ‘Anglosphere’ cultural resonances mean anything, expectations can be pitched down to sub-basement levels. Like the UK, Australia did a good — even excellent job – with the outside of its pavilion, but its exhibition was, to be brutally frank, a disgrace. Vacuous, patronizing, revoltingly sentimental, and despicably cowardly – details would be nice, of course, but actually there weren’t any — it served to perfectly illustrate the collapse of Expo, from a festival of dynamic modernization to a whining indulgence in modernity’s most destructive cultural pathologies. Where once an exhibition, whether corporate or national, boldly declared: “This is what we’re doing (isn’t it magnificent?),” now they exhaust their attenuated energies exploring new, although consistently unimaginative, ways of saying “sorry.” Narcissistic guilt flaps pointlessly about the exhibition space like a shoal of stranded fish, dying on a beach.
Incredibly, the USA pavilion was even worse. Not only was the pavilion itself a prefabricated strip-mall insult, unworthy of comparison with a second-tier Wallmart, but the exhibition inside took the obsequious pandering of the Australians to a whole new level. We wanted a space shuttle or a predator drone and they gave us Hillary Clinton saying “ni hao” plus some nonsense about planting flower-beds in the ghetto. Anyone who left this pavilion without deep and abiding detestation for everything America represented itself as being probably thinks Barney is a pretty cool guy. This was the society once capable of staging the Chicago Expo of 1893, the New York Expos of 1939-40 and 1964-5, of making incredible things and exhibiting them, of depicting a compelling vision of the future, and now … morbid Spenglerian reflections were inescapable.
[…]
The West is obviously spiraling down the drain, and what it needs, above anything, is some inspiring competition. In particular, and in 2010, it needed a western Pacific Rim, full-throttle development, blazing-a-path-to-the-future Expo that – purely by inevitable implication – maximized the humiliation of the senescent ‘developed’ world and jolted it with the roughest imaginable type of tough love from its path of decline. (Of course, the societies most in need of this shock therapy are too lost in the enthralling minutiae of their own degeneration to have noticed it, but still …) Instead, Expo 2010 remained scrupulously courteous, deferential to deeply decayed Expo traditions, and respectful of the multicultural piety that even the most wretched examples of systematic social failure have a dignity of their own. What it lacked was a massive injection of pure, unselfconscious, ethno-historical arrogance, based on unmoderated confidence in what was being achieved.
Perhaps this can be stated even more offensively: modernization should make people feel bad. Its most altruistic or epidemic function is to so thoroughly deride and humiliate all of those who are failing to modernize that eventually, after every excuse and projection has been attempted and exhausted, behavior is changed. Backwardness is made shameful, and thus corrected. That’s how history works. It began that way among the jig-saw principalities of Renaissance Europe, it worked that way in Japan (bringing modernization with the Meiji restoration), in China, long denigrated for its ‘stagnant Confucianism’, now big mummy of the Dragon economies, in India, finally lashed psychologically out of its absurd ‘Hindu rate of growth’ by the China model, and everywhere else that has ever climbed out of complacent sloth onto the developmental fast track. It’s long overdue to start happening in the West, because what has been happening there — for the best part of a century now — simply isn’t working, and this chronic social failure is nowhere near clear, painful, or embarrassing enough to the populations concerned.
[…]
No doubt 2010 is still too recent for alternative or counter-factual history, for an Expo-punk (or X-punk) genre, searching out everything that might have been re-animated through the event — but the venture is irresistible. Call it Asia Unleashed 2010, an utterly impolite assertion of new socio-geographical realities that expresses, in raw and overwhelming style, the central truth of the age: the simultaneous de-westernization and radical re-invigoration of modernity.
[…]
Asia Unleashed also needs a lot of things brought in, most of all machines. Expo is all about machines, even though every Expo over the last half-century has been pitifully deficient in this regard. It scarcely needs mentioning that the entire Expo site should be pulsing, crawling, and twitching with robots of every type and scale, from industrial goliaths, automated submarines and space vehicles, through charismatic androids, to intelligent household appliances, Go players, robopets, and insectiform mechanisms. To push the process along, those countries and corporations with the laziest robot exhibits can be publicly ridiculed over the PA system.
[…]
The mining industry employs monster trucks weighing 203 tonnes, with a capacity to carry 360 tonnes, they cost US$3 million each, their tires are four-meters in diameter, and driving one is like “driving a house” – why on earth didn’t Expo 2010 have one? Asia Unleashed most certainly would. For developed countries with the resources to put on an impressive show at Expo there needs to be something like a price for admission, and an awe-inspiring piece of industrial machinery fits the bill exactly. The Canadian tar sands are being criss-crossed by these monster trucks, and the Canada national pavilion should have been strongly advised to bring one over. Instead they brought … (hands up if anyone remembers).

With automation taking place at a much faster pace across industries especially in the tech space, domestic software firms that employ over 16 million are set to slash headcounts by a massive 3 million by 2022, which will help them save a whopping $100 billion mostly in salaries annually.
The domestic IT sector employs around 16 million, of whom around 9 million are employed in low-skilled services and BPO roles. Of these 9 million low-skilled services and BPO roles, 30 per cent or around 3 million will be lost by 2022, principally driven by the impact of robot process automation or RPA.
Roughly 0.7 million roles are expected to be replaced by RPA alone and the rest due to other technological upgrades and upskilling by the domestic IT players, while the RPA will have the worst impact in the US with a loss of almost 1 million jobs. Based on average fully-loaded employee costs of $25,000 per annum for India-based resources and $50,000 for US resources, this will release around $100 billion in annual salaries and associated expenses for corporates, the report says.
Major agrotech-companies appear to be planning for a 3 million reduction in low-skilled roles by 2028 because of RPA up-skilling. This is a $100-billion in reduced salary and other costs, but on the flipside, it offers a likely $10 billion boon for IT companies that successfully implement RPA, and another $5 billion opportunity from a vibrant new software niche by 2022. Given that robots can function for 24 hours a day, this represents a significant saving of up to 10:7 versus human labor.
Robot process automation (RPA) is application of software, not physical robots, to perform routine, high-volume tasks, allowing employees to focus on more differentiated work. It differs from ordinary software applications as it mimics how the employee has worked instead of building a workflow into technology from ground up and thus minimizing time to market and greatly reducing cost over the more traditional software-led approaches.
Case in Hand:
UPL Limited, formerly United Phosphorus Limited, is an Indian multinational company that manufactures and markets agrochemicals, industrial chemicals, chemical intermediates, and specialty chemicals, and also offers crop protection solutions. Headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, the company engages in both agro and non-agro activities.
As time passes, the market becomes more dependent and driven on AI and RPA involvement. So, if RPA replaces the employees in the future, then you being an Finance Manager of UPL Ltd., your task along with the CHRO of UPL Ltd. is to do the following:
Detailed cost of developing a competent Human Resource Team.
Depict a feasible financial plan where RPA is brought into the organization and employee salaries still possible to pay for.
Compare the cost of a Human Force with the cost of Human Force with RPA.
Phase-wise Layoff plan for employees after the introduction of AI.
Pink Slip with the severance package.
Devise a new organizational structure.
A manual for employee training, in order to manage sophisticated machinery.
Deliverables:
A detailed report of at least 20 pages
A PPT presentation summarizing the same
Pink Slip

Embracing The New Normal - Online Schools: A Guide For Parents
Tumblr media
We live in unprecedented times when the onset of a new pandemic, or economic crisis, is a real possibility. One of the immediate consequences of such black swan events on the lives of children is the disruption of school education.
Nelson Mandela had said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” When the very continuity of education is threatened, it has many side-effects, including interrupted learning, loss of connection with teachers and friends, disrupted schedules, chaos, increased stress, and a loss of hope.
According to a report by UNICEF, children in India are estimated to have lost five hours for every full-closure day, and 2.5 hours lost for each partial-closure day, during the pandemic-induced lockdowns. Globally, school children collectively lost an estimated 1.8 trillion hours of education. If you’re wondering how to survive depression in times of crisis, especially in regard to your children’s education, it is a legit concern.
Now, imagine a world where your child’s education never gets disrupted, and they can access high-quality education from the comfort and safety of home! The conflation of high-quality multimedia K12 content, cloud computing, and digital access has paved the way for a new model of education - full-fledged, tech-enabled K12 online schools.
The growing case for online schools
Online schools on the cloud have evolved into a high-quality K12 education offering that students can access from anywhere, anytime. They are no longer just an appetizer served to children in the interim, as they wait to return to a brick-and-mortar school. Online schools are the main course in a student’s life, and this is a growing trend around the world, due to its several advantages:
Online schools deliver uninterrupted education throughout the year, reducing the potential for disruption during a personal, national or global crisis.
Another reality is having to relocate due to a new job or work transfer. For children, joining a new school is a stressful experience. However, online schooling presents an alternative to changing schools every few years. Now, students can travel freely, with their school in the palm of their hands! In their new surroundings, the familiarity of one’s school, teachers, and classmates, brings comfort and continuity.
Brick-and-mortar education is also highly inaccessible to children living with disabilities and specific health conditions, depriving them of quality education. However, online schools stream quality education right into their homes, enabling them to compete in an increasingly digital world. The nature of learning modules leverages sound, visuals, and other communication modes, bridging the inaccessibility gaps.
As we can see, the case for online schools is growing, but the quality of education is a key aspect of the success of this model.
Here are some guidelines for parents, when zeroing on the right school:
Understand the school’s legacy
Online schooling is no longer merely a reaction to a crisis. It is being recognized as a legitimate mode of education that stands firm. But as more and more online schools establish themselves as an alternative to brick-and-mortar education, parents must carefully vet their choices.
Since this is a newer phenomenon, the school might not have a long-term track record. However, parents are advised to look into the pedigree of the founders, principals, and teachers, as well as the current record of the school.
21K School, headquartered in Bangalore, is India’s first full-fledged online school delivering K12 education. Though it was only launched in 2020, it already has 3000 enrolled students hailing from 400 cities in 35 countries, representing 17 nationalities. This indicates that the number of takers for online schools is growing.
      2. Choice of the right curriculum
Online schools have opened new doors, and one unique advantage is the access to diverse curricula. Today, one can choose from CBSE, ICSE, IGCSE, and American curricula.
Earlier, one needed to study abroad or join a premium brick-and-mortar school to access an internationally-recognized curriculum. But online schools offer this choice at an affordable price, right here in India. This is also a timely opportunity for students seeking studies and job opportunities abroad.
On the other hand, parents of Indian students living overseas can empower their children to learn via online schools rather than pay a premium for a CBSE school in a location such as the Middle East.
Online schools have made international education more affordable, yet, they have raised the bar for quality.
      3. Prioritize learning, not just higher marks
The modern world of work is a radically different place than it was five years ago. According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs report, successful hires' key differentiators are adaptability, analytical thinking, problem-solving, original thinking, digital savviness, collaboration with global teams, and initiative-driven.
The learning approach of superior online schools is to gently nudge students to inculcate these emerging skills via the intelligent design of learning modules. Students also interact with children around the world, becoming part of a global community of learners.
Rather than subjecting children merely to the pressure of earning high marks, parents must shift their mindset and encourage children to embrace this immersive learning environment that is designed to hone them for the future. Here’s what 21K school has to say about the same.
     4. Review the learning interface
Tech-enabled school interfaces facilitate a seamless, high-quality experience for students, teachers, parents, and other stakeholders, such as guest speakers, who all have access to a unified interface. Here are some questions to ask while reviewing the learning interface:
Can students easily access learning resources, classroom sessions, guest lectures, and work on assignments?
Can they collaborate with their peers in groups, which encourages collaborative learning?
Are the learning resources designed to help break down learning concepts and help students learn with speed and depth?
Can you successfully keep track of your child’s progress without being intrusive?
In conclusion
Offering children a quality online schooling experience will equip them for the challenges awaiting them in a brave new, disruptive business world. It offers them the tools and grooming to succeed, and find fulfillment in their chosen career path, in the future. As Albert Einstein said, “Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.” Online schools like 21K School, by design, are geared to deliver on this promise.

Managing Joint Services' Unconventional Leadership: The Playboy jobs in India
When people think of a "playboy," they usually think of a charming, successful person who lives a freedom-loving lifestyle, often motivated by a desire for joy, plushness, and significant encounters. A playboy might end up exploring a stand-alone mix of social, professional, and individual circles that demand a fragile concordance in the space of joint associations. When applied to the joint administrations, this character paradigm may manifest in a variety of ways, each with its own set of suggestions and challenges. The phrase "joint associations" refers to the harmonious efforts of various branches of the military, such as the Military, Sea power, Flying Corps, Marines, and Coast Watchman, working together to achieve routine goals. A playboy persona in this scenario could be a special role or authority figure who succeeds in their strategic commitments and embraces a lifestyle that reflects a penchant for enchantment and excess. Call boy
Discipline, honor, and dedication are essential qualities that every assistance component ought to keep an eye on in the critical environment. As the image of a jovial individual seeking a break from excess clashes with the organized and facilitated nature of military life, a playboy within the joint associations may initially convey an impression of idiosyncrasy. However, a more in-depth examination reveals how the playboy worldview might investigate the muddled aspects of joint organizations. The playboy's exceptional ability to interact with people from various establishments is at the center of his personality. This limit is useful in group situations and the military for appropriate power. A playboy can maintain society and interest among employees from various branches with his moxie and social knowledge, creating a gutsy impression within the joint associations. Call boy Job
Besides, the playboy's definitive capacities can loosen up past the essential circle. The playboy's life is all about making connections with powerful people, including government professionals, non-military staff, and others. The playboy's capacity to connect the military and regular citizen universes is demonstrated by the fact that the administration of this system can be of exceptional assistance with joint tasks that require coordination with external elements. The playboy's adaptability transforms into a resource in the context of collaborative endeavors, where diverse levels of health and limitation come together. A playboy might have become well-known for adapting quickly to a variety of situations, such as a high-stakes propitiatory exchange, a principal coordinating group, or a gathering. Joint administrators frequently face a variety of challenges, and this adaptability can support a dynamic and adaptable approach to managing them. Playboy job
It is evident that the pursuit of personal happiness does not always take into account knowledge, despite the fact that the playboy's love of fun may cause trouble in a predominantly serious military culture. A playboy in the joint associations may be somebody who truly does well under tension and uses their charm and solidarity to move past issues well. During joint military exercises, the playboy's intuitive abilities may come to the fore. When participating in global readiness projects or joint exercises with related powers, the playboy's ability to quickly spread affection can improve reasonable communication and collaboration. When language and social barriers are removed, such as the playboy's role as an increase maker within the joint associations, this social quickness becomes especially basic. Even though the playboy likes to hang out with other people, it's important to talk about the problems this persona could bring to the military's coordinated request. Discipline, dominance, a drive hierarchy, and adherence to rules are hallmarks of the traditional military ethos. People who view such a way of dealing with going about as incomprehensible with military qualities may oppose a playboy who has an address that extends limits while living like a madman. Playboy meaning
However, it is essential for a largely lavish separation between a playboy daredevil and a person who successfully incorporates slivers of happiness into an even life. The final decision may serve as an illustration of how individuals can fulfill their essential responsibilities with dedication and importance while maintaining an enthusiastic personal life. In joint organizations where facilitated exertion and helpful energy are the focus, the playboy's ability to separate social barriers can foster a sense of inclusivity and solidarity among workers. This comprehensive strategy is capable of resolving a number of issues and ensuring that members of the joint administrations from various backgrounds are treated with respect. The playboy's diverse circle of friends might represent the whole person necessary for a peaceful and effective joint military power. In addition, the playboy's commitment to pleasure could serve as a reminder to prioritize local prosperity and success within the military. Call boy
Administration personnel's psychological and fundamental well-being may be negatively impacted by the strenuous idea of military assistance, particularly in joint operations. The playboy may suddenly stress the importance of keeping areas of strength for fun and serious activities because they embrace a way of life that values relaxation and redirection. The playboy's general affiliation can be a significant resource when it comes to joint associations, where formed effort shifts to general affiliations and affiliations. The playboy has the ability to establish connections that make it simpler for the tactical powers of various nations to collaborate more consistently through communications at gatherings, global events, and discretionary circles. The evolving concept of contemporary conflict, which is heavily dependent on partnerships and alliances, is in line with the playboy's conciliatory persona. Eventually, it is essential to address the playboy unique's potential military traps. If a playboy is viewed by sidekicks and supervisors as someone who places confidentiality over commitment, they may be careless and uneasy. A playboy in the joint organizations should remain aware of legitimacy and demonstrate perseverance through commitment to the mission. Playboy
Also, if the playboy way of life is unreasonable, it might make it hard to keep discipline and follow military rules. A playboy in the joint associations should figure out how to keep up with the fundamental beliefs and standards of the military while also participating in their awards for so much difficult work. A higher level of discretion and a keen understanding of when to concentrate on the requirements of the mission and when to appreciate extraordinary goals are required for this delicate congruence. A dynamic and intricate individual model is presented by the joint organizations' concept of a playboy when everything is taken into account. While the playboy's way of life may initially appear to be incompatible with the military's controlled and composed nature, a closer examination reveals the practical benefits and challenges associated with such a persona. The playboy's social knowledge, adaptability, and capacity for framework organization can clearly contribute to the agreeable tasks required in joint organizations, fostering fortitude and persuasive communication. Playboy job
Nevertheless, it is essential for managing common traps such as issues of discipline, legitimacy, and the requirement of a sensible approach to individual joy. The playboys in the joint associations should carefully examine the stunning area of military presence, ensuring that their lifestyle choices complement rather than disregard commitment to duty. Finally, the playboy's role in the joint organizations reflects the military's ever-evolving components, where the dynamic quest for shared goals praises adaptability, inclusivity, and overall collaboration. In terms of joint associations, the playboy model suggests the possibility of whimsical power. The playboy presents an alternative viewpoint, in contrast to the military, which generally adheres to a standard and controlled approach. This jovial supervisor is not constrained by rigid standards and is willing to investigate novel approaches to difficult problems. The playboy's capacity for creative decision-making can inject some ingenuity into cooperative endeavors, enabling a more original and adaptable response to changing circumstances. Playboy meaning In this ongoing reality, where military procedures should always evolve, the playboy's unusual thinking may prove to be a significant asset. The possibility of significantly affecting the unit's confidence is one aspect of the playboy's personality that should be taken into consideration. The playboy's amusing and friendly nature can maintain a positive and lively atmosphere in the group activities. The positions may be overloaded with a sense of place and integration, resulting in a more grounded and motivated tactical power. This great soul may transform into extended capability and practicality when staff members experience a more grounded sense of affiliation and reason during collaborative projects. On the other hand, the playboy should be able to superbly change the delicate task of maintaining order and respect while remaining aware of force. The playboy's ability to get along with a wide range of people makes him an important asset in joint organizations where communication is important. The playboy's ability to spread affection can make teamwork go more smoothly, whether it's with familiar occupant pioneers, new military friends, or individuals providing individual assistance. Joint-stock Companies: Pioneers of the Modern Economy
Tumblr media
Introduction
The joint-stock company, an ingenious innovation of the business world, has been a cornerstone in the evolution of the modern economy. By amalgamating capital from multiple investors into a single business entity, these companies have fueled the expansion of global trade, spurred industrial growth, and facilitated the spread of technology and innovation. This article delves into the origins, mechanisms, benefits, and challenges of joint-stock companies, shedding light on their pivotal role in shaping today's economic landscape.
The Genesis of Joint-stock Companies
The joint-stock company model emerged in the 16th and 17th centuries, primarily in Europe, as explorers and merchants sought vast sums of money to finance long and risky trading voyages. The concept allowed investors to pool their resources to fund these expeditions in return for a share of the profits, thereby spreading the financial risk. Notable early examples include the English East India Company and the Dutch East India Company, which were instrumental in establishing trade routes and colonies across Asia and the Americas.
Mechanisms and Structure
At its core, a joint-stock company is formed when individuals (shareholders) pool their assets to create a company with a separate legal identity from its owners. Shares of the company are owned by the investors, who profit from the company's success in proportion to the number of shares they hold. This structure enables companies to amass substantial capital, making it possible to undertake large-scale projects and investments.
The governance of a joint-stock company typically involves a board of directors elected by the shareholders to make major decisions and oversee management. This creates a system of checks and balances, where the management runs the day-to-day operations, and the shareholders have a say in significant company policies and objectives through their voting rights.
Benefits of Joint-stock Companies
Capital Accumulation: The joint-stock model facilitates the gathering of large capital amounts, surpassing what individual investors could achieve alone. This capability is crucial for funding extensive projects, research and development, and expanding business operations.
Limited Liability: Shareholders' liability is limited to the amount they have invested in the company. This reduces the financial risk involved in investment, encouraging more people to invest in joint-stock companies.
Perpetual Succession: Given their separate legal status, these companies continue to exist beyond the life of their founders or individual shareholders. This permanence provides stability and the potential for long-term planning and growth.
Transferability of Shares: Shares in a joint-stock company can be bought and sold without affecting the company's operations, providing liquidity to investors and enabling them to manage their investment portfolio with flexibility.
The Role in Economic Development
Joint-stock companies have played a crucial role in driving economic development and industrialization. By enabling significant capital investment, they have supported the growth of industries, from railroads and steel to technology and telecommunications. This investment has led to job creation, technological advancements, and increased productivity, contributing to overall economic growth and development.
Challenges and Criticisms
Despite their benefits, joint-stock companies face several challenges and criticisms:
Principal-Agent Problem: The separation of ownership and management can lead to conflicts of interest, where managers may pursue personal goals that are not aligned with the shareholders' interests.
Market Fluctuations: Share prices of joint-stock companies can be volatile, influenced by market trends, economic conditions, and investor sentiment, potentially leading to financial instability for investors.
Regulatory Compliance: Joint-stock companies are subject to stringent regulatory requirements, which can be complex and costly to comply with, especially for smaller companies.
Impact on Society and Environment: There are concerns about the social and environmental impact of joint-stock companies, particularly large multinationals, whose operations can lead to resource depletion, environmental degradation, and social disparities.
The Future of Joint-stock Companies
As the global economy continues to evolve, joint-stock companies are adapting to new challenges and opportunities. Technological advancements, changing consumer preferences, and the growing emphasis on sustainability are influencing how these companies operate. Moreover, the rise of digital currencies and blockchain technology is beginning to impact fundraising and share trading, potentially heralding a new era for the joint-stock company model.
Conclusion
Joint-stock companies have been instrumental in shaping the modern economic landscape, driving growth, innovation, and globalization. Their ability to mobilize capital and spread financial risk has facilitated the expansion of industries and economies worldwide. Despite facing challenges related to governance, market volatility, and societal impact, joint-stock companies continue to be a fundamental part of the global economy. As they navigate the complexities of the 21st century, their adaptability and resilience will be critical in sustaining their role as engines of economic development and prosperity.

Its a shame Szafnauer reveals how Ocon and Gasly reacted to their race-ending crash in Australia
It was shaping up to be Alpine’s best race of the season so far, with Pierre Gasly running fifth and keeping within DRS range of a Ferrari ahead whilst Esteban Ocon had climbed into the points after qualifying just outside the top 10. But then it all went horribly wrong... At the second restart, disaster struck when Ocon and Gasly collided – leaving Team Principal Otmar Szafnauer with the job of sorting out who, if anyone, was to blame. Pierre Gasly had taken to the grass at Turn 3 after being baulked by Carlos Sainz, who was in the process of tangling with Fernando Alonso. As the Frenchman returned to the track and attempted to accelerate back up to racing speed, he drifted across to take the racing line and found himself making contact with his team mate. READ MORE: Alonso reflects on 'rollercoaster of emotions' race as he takes third place in Melbourne Ocon had been attempting to follow Yuki Tsunoda through, but while the AlphaTauri made it past, the gap closed on Ocon and the resultant collision sent both pink cars into the barriers. Gasly and Ocon's crash will be costly for the team – but they have three weeks now to rebuild their cars “Well, they each apologised, so they each thought they played a role in it,” said their Team Principal after the race. “It was just chaos out there; had Pierre not gone wide in Turn 1 – but a lot of people did – then I think he would have been further up the road. “Esteban at the same time just followed Tsunoda through on the racing line and Pierre didn’t see him and came over to the racing line and just hit him. Which is… unfortunate.” Szafnauer was keen not to apportion blame too quickly, the Team Principal having plenty of experience in overseeing team mate clashes – including with Ocon – in his time at Force India/Racing Point. READ MORE: 'No hard feelings' – Alpine pair Gasly and Ocon reflect on their race-ending collision in Melbourne “It’s a shame that they came together. As far as trying to blame one or the other, I don’t think that’s the right thing to do; the right thing to do is to learn from it. There’s so much chaos there and you’ve got to make quick decisions. “If you look at the onboard and the replay, Tsunoda gets through, Esteban [Ocon] tries to follow him. You don’t know what Pierre’s going to do and Pierre’s just trying to get back to the racing line, it’s not like he’s looking in the mirrors and seeing somebody and saying ‘oh I’m going to block him’, he’s looking the other way, getting on the racing line thinking no one is there.” The crash was looked at by the stewards, who deemed it a ‘racing incident’ and took no further action, much to the relief of Alpine. Gasly is sitting on 10 penalty points and another two could trigger a one-race ban for the Frenchman. “It was truly a racing incident,” Szafnauer agreed. “Who’s to blame for something like that? Hindsight you look back at it and say great, shouldn’t have crashed but there are times you can’t avoid it, things happen in front of you where you have a decision of ‘I either run into this or run into that’ because you can’t avoid it.” Having failed to score any points on Sunday, Alpine have dropped to sixth in the constructors’ standings, with McLaren jumping ahead thanks to their double-points finish.
