A Loud bell echos. So loud it's impossible to ignore. I know it means it's time to get up and get ready for the day. The alarm sounds every morning at the same time no matter what. Weekdays, weekends, holidays it doesn't matter when the alarm sounds at 4 am I have to get up. Can't even get a 15 minute snooze.

I roll over small bunk and put my bar feet on the concrete floor. My cellmate is already getting off his bunk and getting ready. No slow mornings here we gotta be ready in 15. I grab my clothes from under my bunk and begin to put my feet into my pants - white with a blue stripe going down the side of each leg. I pull it up my legs. Then the shirt - also white with a blue collar and blue stripe down the front where the buttons are and on the back: "DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS". I sigh heavily as I put my arms and in buttoned up the uniform. I tuck the shirt in and button the fly and tighten the cheap plastic belt. Almost ready - just missing my white tube socks and by big, black boots. I put on the socks on each foot then stick my feet into those black work boots. Make sure to tie them tight and all that's left is to make my bunk. I tuck the blanket nice and tight underneath the mat I weigh the thin plastic pillow at the head of the bunk and all that's left now is to stand by the bars and wait. While I'm doing this my cellmate is doing the same thing with his top bunk and so are The inmates in the cell next to mine and all the cells in our teir and all the teirs in our cell block. Hundreds of prisoners following the same morning routine every day without break. And I am just one of them no better or different than all the others wearing their goofy white uniforms standing at the bars waiting for morning count.

Prisoners currently cannot donate organs in most states, except for a few outliers in which they can donate to close family members, but this bill would mark the first that trades organs for freedom. The many ethical considerations for an organ donation bill such as this include the fact that prisoners would likely not be thinking rationally when they are incarcerated and offered a route out, alongside the significantly higher rates of HIV, Hepatitis and tuberculosis in the inmate populations.
