Shadows & Daggers
Tumblr media
Az and Gwyn share a moment during a private dagger lesson.
Warnings: None | WC: 1,432 | Read on AO3 | Gwynriel Masterlist
a/n: Based on a fanart by Lucielart, commissioned by @booknerd87 on tumblr. Part of her "A Picture and the Story Behind" collection. Happy Birthday, lovely!
Tumblr media
The cool of the blade spread across his skin. It was pressed hard enough to be felt, but not so hard it would leave a mark.
Az almost wished it would.
"Do you yield, Shadowsinger?"
He couldn't help but flash a half-smile to the redhead. "I never yield, Berdara." She pressed the flat side of the blade harder against his neck, bringing her body nearer to his.
This close, he was overtaken by water lilies and a river rushing through the forest. The scent so strong, he felt as if they'd been transported to a clearing by a small brook.
"Cassian says otherwise," Gwyn challenged, not easing up on her hold of Az.
"Cassian says a lot of things."
Her lips twitched upward, as if she wanted to laugh in agreement but wouldn't let herself. "He also says there's no dishonor in yielding to the better fighter."
"Yeah," Az chuckled. "I'll believe him when I see him yield."
Adding more pressure to the blade, Gwyn watched Az carefully, her eyes scanning his face, looking for something. Likely insight into what he'd do next.
He lifted his hands and rested them on hers, wrapping them around her fingers and the dagger's hilt. His callouses wouldn't let him appreciate the smooth backside of her hand, but they didn't stop the tingling sensation that buzzed up his arms from the point of contact. "A knife to the neck is a good power play, but if you've left both of your opponent's arms free, they've got far more room to fight back, even if you do have their legs pinned." His shadows danced up his wrists until they were swirling around their joined hands.
Swimming in deep pools of teal, Az couldn't look away from her eyes as he pushed the dagger away from him. Gwyn attempted to hold it where it was, but he was stronger. And once it was far enough from his skin, he managed to wrangle it out of her hand. The metal clanged against the floor of the training ring, the sound drawing Gwyn's gaze away for a minute.
His shadows retreated slightly, back to their perch on his shoulders, watching Gwyn. Marking every tiny move in case Azriel missed one.
He never did.
"I guess I still need more lessons," Gwyn breathed, slowly looking back toward Az. His hands were still holding hers. She didn't pull away.
"Whenever you want, Priestess." Az could feel his chest expanding and contracting with each breath he took. Gwyn was so close to him, her eyes bright and contemplative. A faint blush spread across her cheeks. He wanted nothing more than to lift a hand and brush the color softly. But he dare not.
Gwyn had recently become more comfortable with his touch. Letting him direct and guide her, to take her hand when necessary. All for teaching purposes. Their touches were no more than a mentor helping a student learn a proper stance or move. That's all they could be. It didn't matter how much more they might mean to Az, how much more he wanted. Gwyn's comfort came first.
Still, this close, it would be so easy to lean in. To just ghost his lips across hers, to chance a quick taste, knowing it would likely be his only one.
Azriel would never disrespect Gwyn like that. It was just a dream, another fantasy. That's all he was ever granted: fantasies. He tried to shut them off, to keep his mind occupied with other thoughts. Consciously, he refused to think about Gwyn in that way. But in his dreams, on the nights he actually managed to sleep, there was no stopping them.
Picture after picture of a possible life flooded his mind. Picnics by the Sidra. Getting a small house together. Private game nights at the House. Spying together on various missions. Stolen kisses in the garden. Secret moments in hidden alcoves that only the House would witness.
He would wake smiling every time they came. And it would quickly fade when he remembered it was a dream he'd never have.
Gwyn's eyes flicked down to the hands that were still holding hers.
Idiot. This touch was far beyond that of a teacher helping a student.
He moved to slide his hands away, but she turned her palm and linked her fingers with one of them as the other fell away.
It was as if his entire body had expanded, only so that he could feel even more hollow. And yet, it was warm and welcome, and entirely daunting.
He swallowed as she locked her stare with his again.
Everything was pounding. Everything was silent as a grave.
Gwyn leaned in slightly, her movement slow, cautious. Az was frozen in place. And even if he could move, he wouldn't. He didn't know what was going through Gwyn's mind. What she was thinking or doing. But whatever it was, he would give her the control. He would always give her the control in such a close proximity. Whenever she wanted it.
She stilled, her face a few inches from his, her breathing as heavy and ragged as his had become.
"Az," she whispered, her eyes flicking between his and his mouth. In five hundred years, his self-control had never been so tested as it was in that moment. He was practically shaking with restraint, only he couldn't do that either. Not as Gwyn sat on top of him, able to feel his every heartbeat.
Drums started to sound in his distant corners, announcing an army that would march through his entire body. He could feel the vibrations of the footsteps in the depths of his chest.
Gwyn's eyes never left his. They held his stare and wouldn't let it go. Not that Az wanted them, too. No, he would gladly stare into that sea of teal all day if Gwyn would let him.
He felt a nudge at the back of his head, something cool and not entirely corporeal. One of his shadows, pushing him closer.
Az let it, bringing his face closer to Gwyn's. From this distance he could easily find shapes and images in the freckles across her nose and cheeks, like constellations in the stars. His hand lifted slowly, his fingers brushing through her hair and pushing it out of her face.
Images from his dreams flashed across his mind, more determined than ever before. He attempted to shut them down, to quell the hope that was building.
"Gwyn?" he breathed, barely making a sound. Something was on her mind. He could see it in her stare, in the tension in her lips.
The corners of her mouth ticked upward and then she was leaning in again.
His shadows began to swirl around them, shrouding them, as if trying to offer some privacy. As if that were possible at the House in any sense. Especially out in the open in the training ring.
Az couldn't breath as Gwyn inched closer. He'd dreamed of her getting this close for months. Of her smile and lips, her laugh, her bright eyes. And now it was happening. She leaned her face into his hand, even as she moved toward him, tilting her head.
It was her choice. He stayed still to ensure it remained that way, but Cauldron did he want this, for her lips to reach his, to brush them, press against them.
"Don't even think about it!"
The cry sounded through the air, making Az's shadows retreat as Gwyn jolted away.
"Don't think about what?" a deeper voice chuckled.
Az groaned as he recognized the voices. As he heard the footsteps on the stairs coming from the House to the ring.
Gwyn stood, straightening herself. Az followed her lead, moving slower than her as he mentally cursed his brother. Cassian would find a way to chase Nesta up to the ring at the worst possible moment.
Az held out the dagger to Gwyn. She accepted it and muttered, "Thanks, again. For the lesson and…yeah."
He nodded and watched as Gwyn put the dagger back in its place and then rushed through the door just as Nesta and Cassian got there. His eyes remained on the emptying stairwell behind the two idiots who were now staring at him with shit eating grins.
"Did we walk in on something, brother?" Cassian wondered, his words full of amusement.
Az rolled his eyes and took a deep breath. "Dagger lessons." He shot a quick glare at Cassian and then spread his wings, taking off for a much needed flight to expel some pent-up energy.

Private Lessons (1981) | Hercules (1997)
Eight months ago today, I wrote this review on the 1981 film Private Lessons. One thing I didn’t mention in it was that I was drawn to the film (even though I did not truly like it or think it was a good movie) because several scenes with Philly and/or Nicole reminded me so much of similar scenes with the titular Disney character Hercules and Meg. The overall key similarity between the two films is that the lead women are forced by a crooked, sleazy male character to seduce the lead men for both parties’ own personal benefits, only to end up developing genuine romantic feelings for them instead, much to the chagrin of their bosses. Here are all the moments in Private Lessons that I see as being similar to ones in Hercules:
Nicole first tries to seduce Philly when she sits across from him at an outdoor table and continuously crosses/uncrosses her legs, during which Philly tries to look up her dress. When she voices her noticing what he is doing, she uncrosses her legs one more time and gently grazes his arm with her foot as she does so. This particular moment struck a cord with me by making me think of the scene when Hercules and Meg are in the garden, and she tries to seduce him to get him to admit what his weakness is. She starts by extending her leg directly in front of his face and using her foot to turn his head towards her, then she proceeds to move closer to him while he simultaneously tries to move away each time she advances on him. In both scenarios, the men are shocked and confused by these alluring older women openly flirting with them.
Both couples go on a romantic date (which includes eating at a restaurant), during which their love blossoms.
During said dates, both men give the women a flower (Hercules pulls a flower from a tree to give Meg, while Philly gives Nicole a corsage). Both women are shown to be very touched by this sweet gesture.
(Not pictured) A lovestruck Philly faces insults about Nicole from his best friend Sherman, who accuses Nicole of being a whore after hearing about the advances she has made on Philly. Philly gets so angry about the accusations in Nicole’s defense that he pushes Sherman into the latter’s pool. In Hercules, the lovestruck hero faces ranting insults about Meg from Phil, who accuses Meg of being a fraud after he had seen her with Hades. Hercules gets so angry about the accusations in Meg’s defense that he pushes Phil (though more violently than Philly pushes Sherman) away, causing him to slam into a pile of weights and chains.
In an early scene, Nicole is alone with Lester, the crooked chauffeur with whom she is working. It’s revealed later that she is working with him because he discovered that she is an illegal alien and has threatened to report this to immigration officials unless she helps him with a bigger blackmail scheme to get money from the safe of Philly’s father by seducing Philly, sleeping with him, and pretending to die. Nicole objects at first, since she feels bad about taking advantage of an innocent teenager, but she is forced to comply when Lester reminds her that he’ll snitch on her if she doesn’t do what he says. Some time later after she finally sleeps with Philly and fakes her death, Nicole returns to the Fillmore house (having been forced by Lester to stay at a motel so Philly will continue think she is dead) and tells Lester that she doesn’t want to continue with the plan anymore, as Philly doesn’t deserve to be scared and humiliated like this. What she doesn’t say is that she has genuinely fallen in love with Philly and therefore doesn’t want to do this to him any longer. Of course, this all makes me think perfectly with how Meg is working for Hades because she has sold her soul to him years ago to save her old boyfriend. When Hades tries to talk Meg into seducing Hercules to find the latter’s weakness so that Hercules won’t be able to stop Hades in his long-planned scheme to take over the world, Meg refuses at first, having a deep distrust in men after her ex-boyfriend heartlessly left her after she had him saved. But she gives in when Hades offers her her freedom if accepts and succeeds. However, by the following night, Meg has fallen in love with Hercules and subsequently refuses to help Hades any longer, despite still being owned by him.
Continuing from the Private Lessons scene in the last point, when Nicole explains why she has second thoughts, Lester realizes it’s because she is in love with Philly, though she refuses to admit it and tells him to shut up in annoyance. This reminds me all too well of Meg’s infamously singing about refusing to admit she is in love with Hercules while the Muses try and get her to confess her feelings.
(Not pictured) Because she loves Philly, Nicole redeems herself by revealing to him that she is alive, and she promises to help Philly get his father’s money back from Lester, which they ultimately succeed in doing. Likewise, because she loves Hercules, Meg redeems herself by finding Phil to help Hercules regain his confidence, then she makes the ultimate sacrifice when she saves Hercules’s life by pushing him out of the way of a falling pillar and taking the crushing blow of it herself.
This gif set is a gift for my good friend @karma26 because we have talked about Private Lessons many times, and she has listened to everything I have said about why I tolerate it and why I think it’s a fairly decent film for a sex comedy, despite the controversial subject matter. Now this may not be a post all about Disney, but I hope you still enjoy this, pal! 😁😊❤️

Private Lessons, a little quickie
from Strongberry. With a script this short, dense and poetic, every word carries weight.
So, it would have been great to feel assured that the English subtitles were accurately translated. Sadly, I didn't feel confident of that.
Who knows what I missed ?

Movie Review | Private Lessons (Myerson, 1981)
Tumblr media
This is a movie about a woman in her thirties seducing a fifteen-year-old boy, and while I hate to use this word as it tends to by deployed by dumbest, most reductive movie watchers on the planet, it never acknowledges how problematic the subject matter is. There's a throwaway line referring to the illegality of the woman's actions, but ultimately the relationship is painted as wholesome and life-affirming. Which is expected as this is an '80s sex comedy and as such frames its premise as adolescent fantasy. Wouldn't it be awesome if you could make it with your super hot European maid Sylvia Kristel? And from that perspective, it offers a few minor surprises in that it (very gently) interrogates the scenario, with Kristel chiding the hero for obviously checking out her legs, and then having the hero awkwardly react when Kristel starts to make good on the fantasy. (When she invites him to her room and lets him watch her undress, he rushes out to tell his buddy what happened instead of going to bed with her.) And while sex crimes are de rigueur for '80s sex comedies (exhibit A: Revenge of the Nerds; exhibit B: also Revenge of the Nerds), one might appreciate that at least the hero isn't the one committing them here.
Now, on those terms, I will concede the movie is fairly successful, and much of the credit goes to Kristel. For a role that's basically a fantasy, I think she imbues it with a certain amount of humanity and warmth and manages to overcome the skeeviness of the central relationship. Kristel was best known for sexpot roles thank to the Emmanuelle series, and having seen the first one of those, I think she brings a similarly sympathetic presence, even if the character she plays here is more experienced than the one in the other movie. I'm looking at her Wikipedia page, and given all the near misses in her career (The Tenant, Once Upon a Time in America, Superman, The Hunger, a bunch of Bond movies), it's maybe a bit disappointing that she got typecast in this kind of material, although she manages to elevate it at least a little. Also, as a straight male and therefore the target audience for this movie, I found her quite attractive and will concede that the abundance of nudity (some of it courtesy of a body double, I learn from the Wikipedia page) is not entirely unwelcome. As this is a sex comedy, both of those work in the movie's favour.
Now, if it had just limited itself to that relationship, this might have been a sane if questionable movie, but that wouldn't be exciting enough. No, this has to stick in a blackmail plot orchestrated by the chauffeur Howard Hesseman (bringing a similarly sleazy charm as his role in Doctor Detroit; for all I know, he played the same character and switched jobs). There's a faked death, a missing body, a nosy detective played by Ed Begley Jr. and a car chase, all while the hero gets questionable advice from his dorky friend who keeps calling his sister April 1978 Playmate of the Month Pamela Jean Bryant a "creep" even though she's reacting perfectly normally to how freaking annoying he is. I will not pretend I know what made the filmmakers think any of this was a good idea, but I will also not pretend that I wasn't entertained. Probably the most intriguing read of the plot is that it suggests a kind of class warfare, the chauffeur and the maid scheming against a member of the upper class. This is basically Parasite, if that movie wanted you to unambiguously root for the rich and against the poors.
At this point I must clarify that the title refers to lessons in life and love, not actual book learnin' lessons. For that you'll have to turn to Gary Graver's Private Teacher, where Kay Parker helped Tom Byron overcome his shyness through the power of Shakespeare and fellatio. (Mostly fellatio. I'm a fan.) But the insane high point of the movie comes right at the end, when *MILD SPOILERS* the hero claims to have learned his lesson about pursuing girls appropriate for his age and asks out his foxy teacher played by home staging pioneer Meridith Baer, which is presented as a feel good ending. Only in the '80s.
