10pm on Wednesday, August 17th, 2016 – Memphis, Tennessee
The alarm rings out 3 times before you get the feeling it wasn’t a mistake. You rush for the window on the right, Eddie rushing for the left, as you both push the blinds out of the way to look out.
All the lights in the zone seem to have shut off at once. There are a few scattered bulbs still on the wall, probably emergency backups, and the only other thing you can see is the flickering glow of the huge bonfire a few blocks away. The alarm continues to blare in the silence of the night – your eyes scanning what little you can see in the dark to see if there is anything amiss.
“Has this happened before? Like some kind of drill?” You glance over at Eddie who is still looking intently out the window, jaw set tight.
“Not in the 5 years I’ve lived here.” His hand lifts, fingers feeling along the window frame in front of him in a soft skate until he reaches something. Fingers curl in and the side of his fist taps twice against the spot before he forces the window open an inch or two.
The alarm is much louder in the open air. A harsh clanging that drills into your skull over and over and over. Both of you stand frozen before your own windows, spines straight and on edge as you wait.
Neither of you know exactly what you’re waiting for.
An unrecognizable reverberation rises from the south – a metallic groaning sound, like the hull of a ship stretching and shrinking in the ocean waves. It goes on for 45 seconds or so beneath the alarm before it cuts off with a harsh grinding noise. Another minute of silence, just your own heavy breathing and the underlying blare that starts to fade into background noise the longer it goes on.
An explosion sounds to the north. It echoes out across the concrete walls and sends the whole building shuttering on its foundations. The windows rattle in their frames while a glass in the kitchen falls and shatters – as if there was an earthquake. When you look out the window again, a cloud of dust and smoke begins to slither its way up the north wall, the orange dance of flames coloring the dark gray smoke toward the bottom before it dips behind the buildings and out of view.
The sound of gunfire comes next, vibrating back and forth along the city blocks and making it impossible to tell where it’s coming from. “Fuck, Eddie…” Your head whips toward him but he doesn’t react, eyes wide and unbelieving as they continue to scan for signs of what the hell is going on. “Eddie, what do we do?”
The door behind you rockets open, the handle embedding itself in the drywall with a crack. Max stands on the other side, one foot forward from where she’d kicked the door open, her chest heaving. “Munson,” she pants, crossing the room as she begins to pull her hair back into a high ponytail, “we have to get out of here.”
“What the fuck is going on down there, Red?” His voice is raised in distress, still not moving as Max passes him toward her room. It’s the most emotion you’ve heard out of him so far.
“No one knows,” she calls behind her as she lifts her hoodie over her head and throws it, going digging in dresser drawers for different clothes. “It’s fucking chaos out there. Everyone just started running when the alarm went off. I heard someone say they saw Infected.”
“Infected?” A chill of fear shoots down your spine, cold leaking out into your ribs as they begin to feel tight. “Inside the walls?”
“No, they were talking about across the river,” she snarks, slamming sounds increasing as she disappears further into the room. “Yes, inside the walls.”
“Did they say how many?” Eddie finally starts to move, jogging into his room with you directly behind as you both go diving for your own packs.
“It doesn’t matter,” you can feel Eddie’s glare on the top of your head as you keep your focus on shoving your things back into your bag as you talk. “It’ll just keep increasing exponentially, even one is too many.”
“Since when are you a fuckin’ expert--”
Eddie’s sneer is cut off by Max walking in. “Bambi’s right, Munson.” Your annoyed look shifts from Eddie to her at the nickname, but one blink in your direction has you turning back to your things. “Even if only one Infected bit one person and no one knew, it’s already too late in a city this size with this much panic.” She lays a machete down on the bed in front of you. “You know how to use one of these?”
Her blue eyes are bright even in the low light, a certain fire to them that can’t be extinguished even by the darkest nights. She’s decked out in battle gear, protective clothes built for moving and hiding, her knives in place, her ginger hair slicked back to her head. She doesn’t look scared or nervous – if anything she looks more at ease now than she did by the bonfire. More determined. Like this is what she was made for. You look between her and the machete once before giving a stiff nod and clipping the sheath to your pants. Eddie swings his pack onto his shoulders, going for the twin pistols on the bookshelf. “Saw an explosion northside along the wall, do you know what that noise was southside?”
She shakes her head, disappearing behind you again. “I told you, it’s a mess on the ground, no way to tell anything. We gotta get out of the city.”
Eddie swears under his breath, leaning both of his palms on the edge of the bookshelf as he hangs his head and takes a deep breath. “St. Peter’s was clear when we went through yesterday,” he calls out without lifting his head, eyes pinched shut as he continues to take measured breaths.
“We’ll try there first. Seems like most of the commotion was towards the west so hopefully we’ll have a clear shot.”
The wood groans under Eddie’s hands as he digs in, pushing off of it forcefully enough to send it rocking back against the wall. He turns on you, face stern and with a frightening calm to how he’s holding himself. “Grab whatever you can, don’t plan on coming back.”
He pushes past you back out into the rest of the apartment where you can hear Max rooting around in the kitchen. You shove the last of your stuff back in your pack, zipping it quickly before releasing the mag to check ammo on your pistol. It gets tucked into your holster and your pack gets thrown onto your back. One last quick scan of the room – the one that was Eddie’s home, that smells like him, that has his books, that he lives with Max in. Something catches your eye, sitting in its spot on top of the bookshelf just as it had when you first walked in. You grab for it and shove it deep into your pack before you turn back toward the other two.
A plastic bag gets thrown your direction without warning, slapping against your chest and falling into your arms. “Put that in your bag,” Eddie commands, shoving a similar looking bag into his own. You want to bite back at his order, at his authority, but a twin set of explosions sounds outside, smaller but also closer than the ones before, interrupting you enough to just do as he says. “Were the stairs clear when you came up, Red?”
She nods, shoving a canteen into her bag and then pressing off toward her abandoned rifle where it still rests by the couch. “Might not be now though, if people were running in like us to try to grab what they can.”
“Okay, I go first, Red covers us in the back.” He looks you over for a minute before adding, “Bambi,” a pause, as if feeling out how the newly assigned nickname fits in his mouth, before continuing, “stay close to us, but if anyone gets separated, head for St. Peter’s. You remember where that is?”
“One block north, 3 west, big cathedral,” you answer, which seems to impress him for a moment before he turns to dig something out from behind the couch. His arm reemerges with a baseball bat in hand – the black paint along the wood peeling in places and long nails hammered straight through the top. He tucks the handle under his arm as he double checks the magazine of ammo on both of his pistols. His bandana is tied around his head, keeping his bangs off his forehead and helping the rest of his hair stay back. Beneath the glazed over calm, you can see a subtle shake to his fingers as he clicks the mags back into place, a certain jerkiness to his movements as he prepares to leave.
Easy to imagine that it’s because he knows he might never come back.
“Everybody ready to roll out?” Max asks, as he loops the strap of her rifle over her shoulder.
“Ready,” you confirm, tightening the straps of your pack and undoing the latch of your new machete so it’s easier to slip out if needed.
Eddie nods and takes another deep breath, straightening his spine on the inhale. “Then let’s go.”
The three of you press out into the hallway, now pitch black without the stuttering lights above. Eddie navigates it easily, years of muscle memory taking him directly to where the sharp corner bends to the rest of the hall toward the stairs. You follow close behind, eyes struggle to adjust in the dark as you keep your fingertips outstretched so they brush along Eddie’s backpack to guide you. None of your footsteps make a sound on the stamped down carpet, hiding both yourselves and any possible assailants from being found so easily. Luckily, the three of you push into the stairwell without incident.
Emergency lights cast an eerie green across the concrete walls as you begin to descend, not hearing any foot steps other than the 3 of you. They echo out across the walls, ricocheting higher and higher above your heads. None of you speak, trying to listen for anything that might be out of place. The closer you get to the ground, the louder the cacophony outside grows. Gunfire, yelling, the odd explosion ringing out more and more distinctly as Eddie checks back behind the stairwell, just as you had yesterday, before pushing out and into the lobby.
There’s furniture overturned, a fresh trail of bright red blood leading off and toward the elevator, but the space is otherwise empty. As the three of you approach the glass doors, you see silhouettes of people running past, all headed west. When Eddie breaks the seal of the enclosed room, that’s when you start to hear the screaming.
It’s everywhere – gunfire and people crying out coming from every direction as your eyes adjust to the night air. A few more people run past, paying no attention to you as they head toward the river. “Okay, eyes up,” Eddie adjusts his hands on the grip of his bat and sets into a jog toward the east.
Staying in a line, him in front and Max behind, you keep a hand on the handle of your machete as you press on toward the cathedral. You jog past a couple, a woman supporting her husband as he limps along with a hand pressed to a steadily bleeding wound in his side. Taking out your flashlight with your free hand, you click it on as you travel away from the burning fires and deeper into the shadows. The light coasts over empty sidewalks, reflects back off of store windows, and catches on disturbed dust from the road beneath your feet. Eddie holds out a hand for you both to stop and points out ahead and to the right, your flashlight immediately angling that way.
Two bodies lay in the street unmoving. As you approach, you see they are definitely not breathing, torsos littered with bullet holes, as if gunned down by an assault weapon at a distance. After confirming those people definitely aren’t getting back up, you all press on, a bit slower than before as you watch out for signs of further struggle.
Your flashlight catches on the dry, dead grass of the small park across the street from the cathedral. Scanning slowly across it with the bright light, your breath catches in your throat when you see a hunched over form toward the center. The person is on their knees, bent over with their head angled down. Another few steps and you can see they’re bent over a person in FEDRA armor, the body on the floor twitching as the kneeling figure presses their face into the other’s neck. A shift in your position has the light reflecting off a piece of metal on the body.
The Runner immediately throws it’s head up, it’s shoulders twitching once before it whips toward the three of you. Trails of blood pour down from it’s mouth as the lips part, letting out an inhuman roar as soon as it makes eye contact. It leaves behind it’s meal to stumble to it’s feet and make a break in your direction. Eddie takes a few quick steps toward it, bat clutched in both hands, and he reels back. The Infected lunges. The nailed end of the bat makes contact with it’s skull, the right side of it’s head caving in with a sickening crunch as the force of his swing sends it off to the left before it hits the dirt.
“Come on,” he walks toward the doors of the church as Max jogs up from behind you and toward the FEDRA officer on the ground. One of her knives strikes through his eye and into the skull, effectively ending any chance the fungus had of reanimating him. Eddie climbs the small set of steps to the cathedral two at a time and presses in against the door. It doesn’t budge. He tries again, and again, before turning toward you. “Hold this for a sec.”
You take your hand off of the handle of your machete to take the bat from him, trying not to look at the fresh blood shining on the nails as he turns back for the doors and tries again.
“What’s up?” Max asks as she comes up behind you, pausing on the steps.
“Doors jammed,” Eddie explains through a groan, pressing his entire body against the doors. He steps back, backing you up along with him, as he lifts his foot and brings it down next to the broad handles. After 3 more firemen’s kicks, the door still doesn’t move an inch. “It’s barred from the other side,” he explains, breathing heavily with exertion. “Who the fuck would’ve even…?”
“Is there another way in?” You ask, holding his bat back toward him, fingers brushing as he takes it in his right hand.
“There’s another door in the back, but the path to get there is blocked,” Eddie turns back toward you both, like he’s about to discuss next steps, when you hear a pained scream to your right.
A group of Infected have taken down two people a block east, their backs all curved down as they crowd around the struggling humans. “No time, we gotta go,” Max ushers you along, directing you back toward the west as Eddie catches up to her. “We go for transit by the convention center, if that’s shot we go southwest exit.”
“You got a death wish, Red? Southwest is barely holding as is,” Eddie asks, jogging forward to walk in line with you as you scan the streets ahead with your flashlight.
“Barely holding means no Infected,” she replies, her voice fading out as she turns around to see if the group behind are following. “Plus you’re already heading west, we’ll be able to take a straight shot down to Harahan and get across the river.”
Eddie lets out a heavy sigh beside you, his head tilting left and right along his shoulders in a stretch. “Fine, but we’re still going for convention center first.”
The three of you set into a brisk walk back the way you came, seeing even less panic than you had before. You catch the backs of people ducking into store fronts and crossing the streets ahead, but it’s mostly just shadows moving in the dark. As long as no one turns on you, you pay them no mind as your group moves forward in a steady sweep of the path ahead.
The screaming gets louder the further west you get. Though still hard to tell with the way sounds bounce off the tall buildings downtown, it seems as though most of the commotion is coming from the direction of the bonfire. Another chill of cold fear slides down your spine thinking of the huge gathering of people, half well on their way to intoxication, in the midst of whatever this is. You find yourself wondering where Maggie and Libby are, where Sadie is. If they’re safe or not.
“Let’s cut north after City Hall,” Eddie says, voice loud enough for you and Max to hear him but low enough to hopefully not attract any unwanted attention. You’re about to get back to the intersection of The Claridge House when an explosion echoes out from the right and a crowd of people runs through the intersection, heading south toward the bonfire. They are pushing each other out of the way, feet locking together and sending others down into the dust. The people tripped barely have time to hit the ground before they’re scrambling up again to keep running. Running like their lives depend on it.
Eddie is scanning through the running crowd as you clear the corner, looking out across the tracks to see what they’re running from.
There are more hunched over figures, feasting on prone bodies, stragglers from the escaping group being tackled to the ground right in front of you. There are at least 15 Infected littered across the tracks, each with their own soon to be companion bleeding out on the bricks. Their bodies jerk unnaturally as they press down, light from a nearby trash can fire flickering across their arched backs. “Holy shit,” you murmur, backing up a few steps and running directly into Max.
Her hands grip your biceps and push you lightly toward where Eddie is already pressing forward again. You jog to catch up, listening as Max follows close behind. You’re barely halfway down the next block when a FEDRA vehicle comes careening from the north. It veers directly into your path, speed only increasing as it barrels down the street toward you. It jerks left and right, screeching tires rolling across tarmac as you try to guess which way to run to get out of it’s way.
Whoever is behind the wheel must have lost whatever battle they were fighting, because the vehicle suddenly takes a hard right and goes smashing into the parking garage beside it. The crash is deafening – metal scraping metal and dragging on concrete as the hood smashes into an accordion fold against the concrete structure. It was going so fast the back kicks up off the ground before slamming back down with a bounce of the tires. Eddie holds out his arm to stop you as your ears ring from the force of the crash.
The front cab catches fire, the flames quickly doubling in size as Eddie backs up. “We gotta go, we gotta go! This way,” he directs you and Max down the alleyway beside you, drawing your own group closer to the bonfire spot.
“We’re getting herded like animals out here,” Max yells as you run beside her, your pack slapping against your back as you move. “We have to get out of the choke, everyone is getting pressed to the center of the zone.”
You’re about to reply when the vehicle behind explodes, the force and heat of the blast sending you to your knees. Your hands make contact with the ground, your flashlight flying out of reach as you try to keep yourself from falling on your face. Dust kicks up into your eyes, nose, down your throat as you gasp from the shock. It sends you into coughs, your eyes watering forcefully enough to blind you. The world spins beneath your hands as you try to recover your bearings after being sent to the ground. Your ears are ringing even more, not having recovered from the first impact, and your eyes are too blurred to see anything in the dark. Your throat screams in protest as you try to haul in breaths between your hacking coughs, only succeeding in inhaling more dust.
An arm loops around your waist, hauling you to your feet and using that grasp to get you moving again as you continue to cough and try to blink the dust out of your eyes. “Everyone okay?” Max calls out from the dust cloud, her voice rough as if she too was caught up in coughs.
“Good,” you manage to reply in a rasp before another coughing fit hits you, keeping your feet moving in the direction the arm around your waist directs you. The dust cloud clears out when you’ve crossed the threshold, giving you clear air to breathe as you spit out dirt onto the pavement and wipe at your eyes with the backs of your hands.
“Come on, we gotta keep moving,” Eddie’s voice comes from right beside you, the arm releasing as he lets out a few coughs of his own and waves you to follow. You ignore the sudden chill that sinks through you as his warmth pulls away.
The three of you keep trying to head southeast, getting blocked off in various ways, sending you towards where the light of the bonfire continues to grow in the distance. People are running this way and that across the streets like no one knows which direction to go in order to escape the panic. The flicker of the fire stretches out across the path before you, shadows stretching and growing in the distance like spectres with wills of their own. The closer you get to the celebration, the more bodies line the streets. Some bloody as if torn into by claws, others with their throats slit, some with their skin burned.
Around the corner, the market is on fire. The tarps above each stall waving in the wind as they burn, the entire open air gathering point caught up in flames. Eddie’s steps hesitate for a moment as a figure runs out from between the market stalls, their clothes and hair burning as they scream bloody murder. Another figure emerges, also engulfed in flames, and tackles them to the ground, both bodies rolling away from you as they struggle.
Turning away from the sight as your stomach twists, you mistakenly angle yourself toward the original bonfire location. There are even more bodies here, some shot, some looking like they were torn apart. Piled on top of each other in places. Bile rises in your throat, the sharp smell of blood suddenly invading your nose as you scan of the carnage that once was the celebration. It covers the ground, crimson seeping into the soil from all that was shed across it.
You see the woman who played the fiddle on the ground, a bite mark on her arm and a bullet wound through the back of her skull. The man who handed you your cup of piss whiskey is laying on his side, blood trickling out of his mouth and a cut across his throat. There’s a person half sticking out of the flames: long blonde hair, a yellow floral dress, and alabaster skin slowly being consumed by fire. You almost fall backwards onto your ass as you stumble away from the sight.
“Come on, you gotta keep going,” Max catches you, gripping your biceps for support again as she helps you past the rapidly spreading bonfire and beyond the stench of blood and the bodies, known and unknown.
Eddie jogs through 2 alleyways and around a corner, looking back every few seconds to make sure you’re both still behind him. He emerges into an intersection, looks left and then–
A figure tackles him, sending him to the ground ass first as they descend. “Fuck!”
Max takes three steps forward and kicks the Runner off of him like it weighs nothing. Eddie scrambles backwards as she pins the person to the ground with her boot and shoots it twice in the forehead. It falls limp when she kicks it again for good measure before wiping her boot off on the pavement like she’d squashed a bug. Your eyes find Eddie, wide and searching for wounds.
“I’m good,” he says when he catches your eyes on him, “Just busted my ass, I’m fine.”
“Maybe clear your corners before walking past them next time, Munson.” Max’s voice is dripping with sarcasm, barely showing any concern for him as she holsters her pistol again and looks out over the new space.
You step over and offer your hand to Eddie, still on the ground. He’s glaring at Max’s back but the look softens when he sees you reaching for him. He braces his hand on your elbow and you do the same before leaning back, helping him pull himself to his feet. There’s a bit of blood on his palms from how quickly he pulled himself away and it stains your skin before he wipes it off on his pants.
Another FEDRA vehicle goes careening past the intersection you’re looking at, this one in control as it heads to an unknown destination to the south. “All the trucks are headed south, might be a way out,” you note, looking between Max and Eddie.
Neither move nor speak for a few moments and it hits you with a startling realization – they probably knew a majority of those bodies littered across the park. They’ve lived here for years, are known members of the community. Max was helping you past the corpses of people she knew while you tried not to lose it just from seeing bodies you barely recognized.
This is their home. And it’s burning to the ground around them.
“We stick close to the buildings down Riverside. Head for the southeast exit point.” Eddie is solemn, eyes downcast as he starts walking again. “Hopefully we won’t run into whatever FEDRA is going for.”
As if that wasn’t a jinx in and of itself.
A few more blocks south, you catch sight of a huge blockade. FEDRA trucks in a V formation blocking a road. A few yards back from the open point of the V, FEDRA officers kneel and stand with assault rifles going off almost non-stop, empty shells littering the ground around their feet. Bodies cover the intersection between the V and the officers, to the point of piling on top of each other. Infected run for the gunfire and get funneled into the FEDRA trap, falling as more bodies hit the piles. Some climb over the vehicles and try to lunge for them but there are enough officers that they quickly meet the same fate.
The three of you press tight to the building beside you, hidden in shadows as Max steps up a bit closer to speak lowly. “We’ve gotta get past them but if they see anything move they won’t hesitate, doesn’t matter if you’re bit right now or not.”
Eddie looks on, his teeth pressed tight together. “They’ll have the area behind them blocked off, or even if they don’t, they’ll take it as a threat and attack on sight.” The two make eye contact in front of you, Max’s eyebrows raising as she tilts her head. Eddie exhales harshly through his nose before giving her a stiff nod. “Come on, with me,” she murmurs to you, signaling you to follow her back the way you came. You glance back to make sure Eddie is also following, catching him throwing two middle fingers at the FEDRA blockade before trailing after you.
Max leads you west, away from your supposed destination and also toward the direction all those infected were pouring out from. While you want to question, you decide against it as she sneaks around corners and towards the southwest like she has a plan. The screaming steadily rises in volume, gunfire and the sounds of fighting growing beside you. The three of you emerge into a huge intersection filled with people.
Infected press in, clashing with civilians across the open area. Knives and bats and hatchets and axes slice through the air as the people of Memphis fight back against the Infected that try to bring them down. Cutting down former neighbors, slaughtering what used to be friends, sending loved ones to the ground and executing them. You spot Gus out in the chaos, a bloody butcher’s knife in hand as he hacks at the neck of an Infected, sending it to the ground and it’s head rolling off to the side. Max passes you, pulling a hatchet out of the bag behind her and entering the fray. “Max, what are you –”
You drag Eddie out of the way as an Infected flies past, moving too quickly to course correct when you shift it’s intended target, and tumbles over a corpse beyond. “Shit,” you gasp, as another Runner darts toward you both. Eddie’s bat rears back, once again cracking across the skull with a whack. “Where are we going?!”
“Through!” Is Eddie’s only reply, arm coming behind you and dragging you with him toward the fighting.
You duck to dodge an elbow, side step around a struggle, get to a spot where it’s clear enough that you can take off into a run. Max is a few feet ahead of you, hacking and slashing into anyone who comes at her like a fucking angel of death. A whirlwind of fire cutting people down and leaving butchered corpses in her wake. An Infected approaches from behind her, well beyond her field of vision, and you act on instinct.
Your machete is in your hand and you use your running momentum to strike it down into it’s neck, blade sinking into skin and muscle before connecting with bone as it falls forward. You release the handle, letting your machete go down with it as you pull out another blade. Denim covered knees hit the ground, blade sinking into the space below it’s skull with a professional hand, rendering it immobile and hopefully dead.
Knife returning to your pocket as you stand, you brace your foot on their back as you grip your machete again and try to pull it out. Try being the key word. It’s lodged tight, even as you press down with your boot and attempt to yank it free with both hands. In your moment of distraction, there’s a flash of movement to your left and then you’re hitting the ground.
Arm braced to keep the snapping, snarling jaws away from you, you struggle with your other hand between assisting your braced arm in keeping the monster away from you (a losing battle) or trying to reach for a weapon (a losing battle). The weight of the Infected presses down along your whole body, blood running cold as you try one last time to push it off of you.
The weight flies off along with the sound of bone crushing under weight. You gasp out air, trying to scramble to your feet when a hand appears in front of you.
Eddie’s chest is heaving, a smear of blood across his cheek, red soaked bat in one hand and the other stretched toward you. “We’re even,” he says as he pulls you to your feet, a small smile on his face. You go to try to dislodge the machete again but Eddie waves it off. “It’s a piece of shit, come on.”
You both set into a jog toward the swing of Max’s long, red ponytail. She’s shooting into the face of a clicker, 4 rounds directly to the nose before it falls at her feet. Another sacrifice as she burns forward, cutting through the crowd like a force of nature as she fights toward Gus. Her boots are slick with spilled blood, pants stained red, with one of her sleeves torn at the elbow. But when you manage to catch a glimpse of her profile – she’s smiling. She’s grinning like a kid at Christmas as her torment continues.
You’re close enough now to see the sweat and blood that covers Gus as he fights back to back with four others. Max is pushing toward them, almost close enough to call out, when the wall beside them explodes outward. Two of them are immediately crushed by debris, bodies flattening in horrifying squelches beneath the stone, Gus and the other two barely managing to avoid the same fate.
An Infected emerges from the dust, larger than any you have seen before. Fungus covers large portions of it’s body, somewhere near 8 feet tall, and fucking huge. You stand frozen in place as it takes two hulking steps toward the small group, who doesn’t have enough time to scatter, and grabs Gus like he weighs nothing. It lets out a roar that vibrates the bones beneath your skin directly into his face as he struggles, eyes the size of saucers in fear. In mere moments that feel like an hour, the monstrous creature grips his skull and rips his head clean off his body before throwing both pieces away like they’re made of tissue paper.
A scream tears from your throat as Eddie’s hands grip you, dragging you away from the creature as it lunges for it’s next victim. “Run, fucking go!” He’s yelling, sounding more scared than you thought was possible for him, as he directs you back toward the blockade.
“What about Max?!”
“Just GO!”
Adrenaline pumps hard through your blood, muscles pulling tighter, vision tunneling, and nerves numbing as you press into a full sprint away from the screaming that continues behind you. You don’t look back to see if Eddie or Max is with you. You don’t worry about FEDRA shooting you ahead. You don’t wonder if another Infected will intercept you as you go. You do what Eddie asked of you wholeheartedly and without question.
You fucking run.
Bullets fly past you in the opposite direction as you press in tighter to the buildings on your left. FEDRA filters in through the chokehold they made, assault rifles at the ready as they direct their fire toward the horrifying creature behind you. Molten metal whizzes past you, too close for comfort, and your shoulder rocks back to dodge it. Your sprint barely falters as a pressure against your back sends you into an alley. Wait, you can't dodge… A bullet?
Fire erupts across your bicep, searing into your blood and bones as you make contact with the brick wall. Another scream escapes you as hands grab for your shoulders, your own scrambling for purchase on the wall as your left arm feels as though it's being torn off. Your right fist flies, unseeing as you turn on your attacker. Run, fight, lunge, survive.
A hand grips your wrist before it can make contact and pins it back against the wall. Good arm pinned by the wrist, bad arm hanging uselessly at your side, a body presses you into the brick wall. The pressure and the brick digging into your back grounds you for the moment as you blink back into yourself.
Eddie comes into focus, his chest rising and falling with labored breaths, his eyes rapidly flicking between your wrist, your hand, and your limp arm. “Hey, hey, it’s me,” he tries to soothe, posture relaxing as your own tense muscles loosen slightly once you actually make eye contact. “Just me.” He pulls back slightly and your knees buckle under you – you barely fall a few inches before he rushes forward again to support you. “Hey, you good?”
Your vision swims, senses assaulting you from all angles as it feels like the cavity of your skull fills with water. “Dizzy,” you murmur, good hand coming down on his shoulder and gripping tight as the world shifts around you.
“Fucking hell, Bambi,” Max’s voice appears from nowhere, your head attempting to shift toward the noise. “Taking a bullet while running from a horde is pretty metal but we’ve gotta move.”
“Just…” Your mouth feels like it’s full of cotton, dry and heavy as you try to reply. “Just need a minute.”
“We don’t have a minute. Sorry, Bambi.” Eddie yanks your good arm around his shoulders and braces his own across your back. The pain of the movement sends you reeling, a shattered cry breaking out of you as he drags you forward. Max, faster and unburdened, presses ahead to make sure the way is clear as Eddie borderline carries you down darkened paths you aren’t coherent enough to identify.
Your eyes blur and your surroundings blend together as you focus in on yourself, coming to the realization you can still adjust and feel your arm, but moving it feels like a fate worse than death. There’s blood dripping down your hand and onto the floor behind you as you hang off of Eddie and follow Max deeper into the shadows.
Tumblr media
Thursday, August 18th, 2016 – West Memphis, Arkansas
Reds, yellows, and whites swirl around behind your eyelids as you come back to yourself. It’s a step by step process of returning to consciousness.
First, you recognize the bright light beyond your closed eyes is probably the sun. You can feel it beating down on your denim covered shins – which feel as though they’ve been cooking in an oven. The sun must be pretty high in the sky and your calves must have been in the sun for the entirety of the morning based on the uncomfortable heat crawling beneath the fabric. The rest of your body is less heated and potentially under shade, which you’re grateful for.
Second, you come to the realization you’re laying on your back. There’s something beneath you that isn’t ground and isn’t your backpack. It has a bit of give but isn’t necessarily comfortable. Your legs are dangling off the end of whatever it is, the heels of your boots resting on the ground. Your right arm is laying out beside you and your left arm is bound to your chest. You can shift your fingers on both hands, wiggle your toes in your boots. All limbs mobile and accounted for.
Third, your head and your upper left arm are killing you. The sun is too bright even behind your closed eyes. It feels like someone is driving an ice pick right through your temples and pounding into your skull. It echoes around the cavity housing your brain and bleeds down into a sharp tension in your neck. Meanwhile, your arm feels like it weighs 100 pounds against your ribs. It’s wrapped so tight you can feel your heartbeat beneath the bandages along with the sore muscles and throbbing wound. The wrapping comes up over your sternum and over your other shoulder, a makeshift sling keeping your arm in place.
When you finally decide to blink your eyes open, all you see is bright blue sky. There are no clouds to be seen and the sun must be coming in from a different angle because your eyes adjust to the light with a certain ease you hadn’t expected given the pounding in your head. Glancing a bit higher up, you catch sight of a white umbrella above, the saving grace keeping you from roasting alive beneath the sun’s rays. Between the shade of the umbrella and the breeze across you, it actually feels comfortable. Almost calming.
In an attempt to sit up, you draw your good elbow under to prop up your upper body. A groan of effort tumbles out against your will and you hear a snort of amusement off to your left. “Take it easy, Bambi,” Max’s voice sounds tired, lacking emotion. “Lost a lot of blood. Gonna be shaky for a while.”
You ignore her and continue to slowly push yourself up, your entire body protesting, before you are able to take in your surroundings.
The rooftop patio is bathed in late morning sunlight; the faded, white plastic furniture looking at odds with the three of you laid out across them. Max is sitting on top of a table to your left with one of her boots propped up on a chair. Her ponytail is a mess but still standing, the torn sleeve completely ripped off to show her forearm, the blood staining her clothing dried under the heat of the day. She’s leaning back on her palms as she looks out into the distance. Eddie is off to your right, leaning forward with his elbows braced on his knees and his hands clasped between his thighs. The smear of blood across his cheek has been cleaned off but he still looks like a total mess. The bandana has been removed and it looks like he re-tied his hair back into a bun on the back of his head. His pack is still on his back and the now-crusty baseball bat lays on the patio lounger beside him. His head is up, looking out in the same direction as Max. Casting your attention outward, you find out what they’re staring at.
The sun has risen on a Memphis in flames. Large plumes of dark smoke filter up into the blue sky above from multiple different spots in the city. One of the fires is so large you can see the orange filtering up into the funnel even over the tall concrete walls. If you listen close enough, you swear you can still hear gunshots going off and echoing across the valley between you. Or maybe it’s just your imagination. A part of you hoping there are still some people in Memphis left fighting for their home. That not all was lost.
Max and Eddie do not seem like they have that same hope. They are both still as stone and silent as they look out over the home they left behind. It’s a solemn and heavy silence weighed down by grief. Mourning in silence. But they do not cry. They’ve lost too much to shed tears over something like this. You can imagine it feels almost like an inevitability.
It was always going to end up like this eventually – it was only a matter of when.
You tear your eyes away from the burning graveyard beyond and focus back in on yourself. Your upper arm is wrapped tight in white gauze, the sleeves of both of your shirts torn off at the shoulder above it. The fabric of your sleeves has been tied to something else and fashioned into a sling that has your forearm pressed tight to the area just below your chest. Shifting your shoulder in an attempt to test the movement of your arm has tears immediately jumping to your eyes, channeling your desire to yelp into a hiss between your teeth. You still have feeling, you still can move it, but it'll be a little while until you’re able to do so without pain. Probably a lucky break all things considered.
“Was…” Your voice is roasted when it croaks out of you, attempting to clear your throat barely helps. “Was I the only one hurt? Are you both okay?”
“Munson’s got a bruised tailbone and I managed to break my pinky again, but we’re fine.”
A sigh of relief leaves you at the news. Ease confirmed, and now extremely aware of just how dehydrated you are, you start looking around for your bag.
A water bottle rolls across the ground and knocks against your boot, coming to a stop within arms reach. When you look up, Eddie is back to looking out over Memphis, as if he hadn’t moved at all. You grip the bottle in your bound hand and use your good arm to twist off the top, downing half the bottle all at once.
Silence rings out for a while longer. You’re not sure how long you all sit on this rooftop and watch the city turn to ruins before your eyes. The sun might crawl along the sky but you’re not aware of it. All you can do is breathe in clean air that lets you know you’re alive and watch as the happy community of Memphis, Tennessee turns to ash, rock, and bone. Knowing there is nothing you can do to stop it or fix it.
“Now what?”
Eddie’s head falls, hanging down between his shoulders as he looks down at the ground. “We keep going. Head to Three Corners.”
Your jaw drops in surprise, eyebrows drawing together in concern. “Your home just burned to the ground, there has to be something more important for you to do than keep escorting me.”
“I signed up for this gig – made a promise to a friend – so I’m going to get you where you need to go,” his tone is clipped, his hands clenching so tightly together his knuckles turn white. “Besides, there’s nothing we can do to help them now.”
The defeat in his words sobers you. You want to argue there are plenty of things that could be done to try to help anyone who might still be alive down there, your heart still bleeding hot for those left behind, but he doesn’t look like he wants to hear it. You glance over to Max, to see if she has any reaction to his words, but she looks on as if she isn’t even listening to you.
“It might be slow moving while you recover,” he waves a dismissive hand in your direction, “but with the three of us, we should still be able to make it by end of day Sunday. Especially if we’re able to find a car worth half a shit.”
“I’m not coming with you.”
Eddie straightens at Max’s confession, confusion coloring his expression as he glares at her. “What do you mean you’re not coming with us?”
“I mean, I’m not going with you,” she spits back, rolling her head over her shoulder to look over at him.
“What are you planning to do instead?” He asks, and if you didn’t know any better, you’d say he sounds hurt.
She sits up then, pressing a palm into her knee. “Got some business to finish down there,” she angles her head toward the flaming city. “After that…” She pauses, a harsh swallow pushing down her throat. “I think it’s about time I paid Dustin and Will a visit.”
“You can’t be serious.”
Her head whips toward him at his dismissive tone, eyes narrowing into a glare. “Contrary to your own belief, I don’t need you looking after me.”
Eddie pushes himself to his feet, facing her head on. “I promised him I would.”
The declaration seems to hit Max like a slap across the face. She reels back instinctively, muscles tensing like she’s gearing up for a fight. The tension quickly rises to a boiling beneath the heat of the sun and you’re not sure if you’ll be able to stop them if it comes to blows.
Then Max exhales hot air, the tension pouring out of her along with it. The fight that seems so eager to come to the surface ducks back below the water to wait for its next chance to break free. “I know, Eddie.” Her hands come up to rub roughly at her face for a few moments. “But Bambi needs to get to Jeff. She needs you more than I do.” He steps one foot closer like he wants to argue but she holds up a hand to stop him. “I’ll be careful,” her voice lowers, softening into a sincere promise. “I’ll make it out to the other side and I’ll –” Her voice catches, emotions betraying her as she tries to shake it off. “I’ll go clean out the garage.” Eddie softens at that, his eyes pinching up in sadness. “I’ll pack up the truck and go to the ranch. See the boys. Maybe take it easy for a while.” The idea of it makes her laugh softly, some of the sorrow fading as her eyes unfocus, like she’s going off into a daydream of what that might look like.
“You’ll radio when you’re there?” He asks softly, as if he’s afraid to ask for anything at all.
“‘Course I will,” her tone still bleeds sincerity, more feeling showing from her now that you thought she was capable of based on your previous interactions with her. A gentle smile tilts her lips as she keeps eye contact with him, warmth seeping out of her. “I probably won’t get there before you get to Jeff’s but if you hang around for a few days, we can check in?”
Eddie nods, tears pooling at the bottom of his eyes as he turns away from you both. Looking back out over the wreckage and crossing his arms over his chest. Max hops off her table, stretching her arms skyward with a moan of release. “You’ll keep him on track, won’t you Bambi?” She flashes you a smile, the corner of her mouth sharp as she gives you a wink. The confident and deadly human weapon falling back into place. Walls sliding up and clicking into place.
You nod, trying to bury your own tumultuous emotions at the idea of continuing on without her. “I will.”
“Good,” she answers simply, hooking her own bag back over her shoulder. “Well, then. This is a see you later.”
Eddie tilts his head back, studying Max like this is the last time he’ll ever see her. “See you soon, Red.”
“Later, Munson.” She gives you a 2 fingered wave as she passes you. “Nice meeting you, Bambi. Good luck.”
You turn to watch as she crosses the roof and yanks open the door, disappearing into the dark without looking back once.
As soon as the door clicks shut behind her, Eddie lets out a sigh, his shoulders collapsing forward slightly. He turns on his heel toward you, immediately moving to pick up your backpack and move it within your reach. “Come on, Bambi. We’re burning daylight.”
He looks tired again. The kind of tired sleeping can’t fix. The kind of exhausted that comes from deep within you.
You wonder if he’ll ever find the peace of life Memphis gave him again.

playing doctor on myself this morning with google and losing my mind just a bit
i keep. over the course of the last two years at least. randomly getting these blotchy red rashes on my torso. they don't itch or hurt, they aren't raised, and they seem completely random. i cannot figure it out or any link between it appearing. It will typically last several hours. they do not go on my face, neck, or limbs, just the torso. i don't think theyre like dangerous??? because i assume that if they were i would have some adverse reaction like pain, fever, swelling, etc. so that is why i have not been overly concerned with it. but it is baffling me. now sometimes in the past i have gotten extremely itchy for no reason on my torso, so maybe that's a factor, but the itchiness does not always coincide with the rash. for example, today there is none.
the thing i'm interested in today though, is if it's some sort of drug allergy rash. because it always looks exactly like the rash i got last year when i took paxlovid for my covid infection. the doctor told me that's a common (harmless) reaction. i've looked it up and it looks most like a morbilliform drug reaction which are very common. so, if morbilliform drug reactions look and behave like that, i had that reaction to taking a drug, and a doctor told me it was a reaction to the drug then....
...it stands to reason that my experiencing this off and on for 2-3 years might ALSO be a similiar reaction? i just can't figure out the common thread.
one of my meds is implicated as a cause for this type of rash, and has studies/journal articles on it causing this. EXCEPT. um, it happens when you are first introduced to taking it??? and like dude i've been taking this particular medication since 2016 probably. i'm sure anything is possible (like developing new sensitivies) but nothing i have read is about reactions popping up YEARS after the fact, just within 1-3 weeks of starting it. i saw a study done on someone who developed the rash after taking the medicine, but 5 days after first taking it. i saw another study/journal article that was written as a diagnostic aid that literally excluded any drugs you'd been on for a few months as not the cause. so??? idk. my other medicine does not seem to be implicated in this, as when i looked it up i didn't really get anything.
i'm no biochemist or whatever but i can't seem to find any similarities between my med and paxlovid? like ok, we've established that either the nirmatrelvir or ritonavir that is in paxlovid likely caused it. that's what the doctor said. he said my reaction was a common one to one of the drugs in that mixture, which lines up with everything i have read. but afaik these drugs arent like....similiar to the one i have been taking...it isnt like "oh these are the same drug class so maybe your issue is with them"....
the other (relevant) drug implicated in these types of reactions are NSAIDS. now this could be something. i did take ibuprofen yesterday, and woke up with the reaction. is that it? i'm going to start logging it every time it happens to see if it ever coincides with me recently taking ibuprofen. BUT LIKE. i take ibuprofen pretty frequently, mostly for headaches. this reaction might only happen once every two or three months. i feel like if i were getting a reaction from ibuprofen it would happen every time, not just once in a blue moon?
so why am i experiencing it today???? i'm not wearing any clothing made from atypical materials. i havent used any new shower products. i havent tried any new medicines for a while. i havent eaten anything i don't normally have. none, except for the paxlovid rash, coincide with me being sick so i doubt it's viral.
if it IS a mobilliform drug reaction, it still seems atypical because a) i havent started anything new b) it goes away within a few hours, not days/weeks c) it isn't always itchy
WHERE IS THE COMMON LINK AND HOW DO I FREE MYSELF OF THIS?

Nier automata crack date
Tumblr media
#Nier automata crack date android
#Nier automata crack date Ps4
The locations in particular will look different as they’re now more like ruins after the alien invasion but there will also be areas where you get the sense of a very advanced civilisation. The world/universe is still linked between the two NIER games though so if you have played the original, you will no doubt recognise some of the locations and characters who may or may not be returning. It’s set after the original game but the story is written in a way which means you don’t have to have played the first one. The world that you see in NieR: Automata is one where androids and mechanised weapons clash in ferocious combat in a barren and deserted wasteland.
#Nier automata crack date android
In order to take back the earth, a resistance force of android warriors has been created by humanity to fight these invaders. It’s still an action RPG so don’t worry if you want more RPG mechanics in the game, they’re still there!Įarth has suddenly been invaded by beings from another planet and mechanical life forms with overwhelming power were used as weapons of war which forced mankind to flee to the moon. You can probably recognise PlatinumGames’ distinct action style in the gameplay trailer but if you look closely, you’ll be able to spot gameplay elements from the original NIER as well. NieR: Automata is the next game in the NIER franchise and it’s a collaboration between Square Enix and PlatinumGames. If you haven’t played the original NIER, do try and track down a copy because it has one of the most memorable and emotional casts, stories and music in recent memory. To this day, gamers around the world still talk about NIER fondly and the soundtrack and design book are still selling so there’s clearly something special about it. The story revolves around the main protagonist Nier as he searches for a cure for his daughter who is infected with the Black Scrawl virus, a seemingly incurable disease. The original NIER is a very unique action RPG that struck a chord with many passionate gamers when it came out five years ago. I’m sure you guys have lots of questions about NieR: Automata so here’s a quick Q&A to get you all up to speed. So without further ado, check out the first gameplay footage of NieR: Automata! Today, we’re proud to unveil not only the official title of the game but also first ever gameplay footage!
#Nier automata crack date Ps4
Earlier in the year at E3, we unveiled a brand new game in the NIER franchise coming exclusively to PS4 in 2016.

Stucky Week: Kisses
Little drabble + Heavy on pictures for @stucky-week
Kissing for the world to see (also in AO3 where I will surely edit as crazy, haha)
Steve wants to kiss Bucky in the street. But he can’t, so they come up with a little something.
600 words. Drabble. Heavy use of Steve and Bucky's font. Bucky writes all Caps 8hehe), Steve not. My computes is basically dead by heat, so images are of questionable quality.
Tumblr media
Their little scheme is born out of his sheer need on September 30, 1938. Steve remembers the date because it was on the paper he used.
It is his first time going for a walk around the block after yet another close call after dealing with a nasty ear infection gone south. And yes, it is their first time walking around the block because Bucky took the day off to celebrate. And probably because he didn’t trust Steve not to push it too hard.
Autumn’s beautiful golden light, street bursting with people enjoying the warm weather, Bucky talking non-sense right by his side...
And right at that moment, Steve feels actually good and happy: he feels healthy and so so in love that the need to kiss Bucky right there in the middle of the street paralyzes him and he has to stop for a second.
“You ok there, pal?”, the fact that Bucky realizes something is not right in less than a second doesn’t make things better.
“I’m ok, Buck,” he smiles at him and it works as reassurance. “Just… one second.”
Steve takes a piece of discarded newspaper from the floor, and uses the pencil he always carries with him to write something, handing it to Bucky.
“This is me, kissing you on the lips sweetly and way too long. As a thank you and because I love you.”
Tumblr media
This is how it starts, but it’s now how it ends: It becomes something they do and it feels right, like a victory. They are much more subtle that Steve was on that first newspaper, but they just know that when they get those little notes, they are kissing for the whole world to see.
Tumblr media

April 11, 2011: On his own sketchbook, alone. “I would kiss you in public. I guess I could now. If.”

July, 2016: On Bucky’s journal. “Your forehead. Sweetly. Because I remember.”
July, 2018: On a note passed on the Wakanda shore surrounded by children. “While dancing to 40s music. Inside now to make it happen? (I love you in wakandan)”
March 10, 2022: On a missing people poster. “Today I'm asking for one on my neck. To give me the strength to keep on trying.”

Okay, buckle up, kids!
Here’s the coffee bar joke, with a generous helping of salt on the side. Yes indeed. You get a two for one deal! A story and a rant.
So, many of you know that Jeremy was involved in some of the early production of The Greatest Showman. Not everyone seems to know the full story though, so I’m gonna lay it out for y’all.
Around 2015, Justin Paul and Benj Pasek, who are friends of Jeremy, called him up and asked him if he could record some demos for a new movie project they were working on called The Greatest Showman. At this point, they already knew that Hugh Jackman was going to be playing the lead role of Barnum, but while he was in the studio doing the recordings he was told that there was a supporting role in the movie (Phillip Carlyle) that Jeremy could potentially be perfect for.
Anyway, they still needed someone to lay down demos for Hugh’s songs in the style they wanted for the show, so Jeremy did up the demos for them, got to hear them a few months later, and figured that was the end of that.
Then in early 2016 he got asked to go to NYC to do a presentation for a bunch of huge executives that were basically going to decide if the movie would get the green light and move forward. Hugh was going to be Barnum, obviously, and they asked him to come read for Phillip. However, at the time, Jeremy was living in LA and they didn’t have the funds to fly him out, so he decided to take a day off working on Supergirl and bought his own plane ticket to New York. All was going well.
Then, about a week before he was supposed to fly out, he got a sinus infection and ended up with a cough that, in his own words, sounded like “a horse getting punched by a bear”. He lost his voice and started panicking because he was supposed to go to this extremely important reading and obviously needed to be healthy and able to sing. So, he does what singers are never supposed to do and gets some emergency cortisone shots, hoping for a fast recovery.
On the flight over to NYC he received word from the writers that not only did Hugh have to get emergency surgery on his nose and was told he wouldn’t be able or allowed to sing, but the composer, who could also sing and new the songs, was sick and couldn’t sing the songs either. The only other person who knew all of the music was Jeremy. So they asked if he could sing all of Hugh’s songs, and Hugh would be standing there acting them out while Jeremy sang. But he also had to do all of Phillip’s scenes and songs, and his voice was still at only about 50% at this point because he himself was still recovering from being sick. This presentation needed to go smoothly so that their movie would be funded and Jeremy basically had to do everything perfectly to make sure this all went well.
“No pressure.”
He gets there early, rehearses the songs, drinks copious amounts of tea, and gets ready to do this thing.
Fast forward to act 1 done. It was going pretty well, but Jeremy was getting nervous for Phillip’s song in act 2 because his voice was getting tired quickly and Rewrite The Stars is a fairly high song. So they start act 2, get to the duet, and Jeremy can no longer hit the high notes. The only thing coming out of his mouth is air. The song finishes and he’s devastated but moves on and rallies to finish the act.
Now, Barnum’s final song of the movie, From Now On, is a lower song, so Jer gets excited thinking at least he can finish on a great note and go out with his head held high because he knows he can nail this song and have his redemptive moment. However, as you all have probably seen, Hugh decided to ignore his doctor’s orders and sang the last song anyway. It was a beautiful moment and I have such mixed feeling about that video they released because I love how pumped everyone was, but I can’t watch it without being angry and upset on Jeremy’s behalf.
So the song ends. Everyone is thrilled with the show. Jeremy gets himself out of there as soon as he can. But on his way out, he hears it mentioned that Hugh had already talked with Zack Efron about the role of Phillip the day before.
Obviously, Jeremy is crushed and didn’t talk about his involvement of the story at all until his concert at Carnegie Hall and his most recent London concerts last year.
Now, here’s the part where I get to rant for just a little bit.
That youtube video of Hugh singing From Now On went viral and most people who know the movie have seen it. They talk at the beginning about how Hugh wasn’t supposed to sing and all that, but they never even mentioned the fact that they had someone else singing all of his songs and they make sure to talk over the entire beginning of the song where Jeremy is singing and only turn the volume up once Hugh starts. That would have been a perfectly good opportunity to give a thank you/shout out to the guy who nearly single-handedly saved all their butts for that presentation, but NOoooOOooOOoOOOoo. Also, I don’t know if y’all noticed, but after Jer told this story at his concerts and people started commenting on that video about it, they turned the comments off. Really, guys?
There is also an interview with Hugh Jackman where he even mentions the demos that Jeremy recorded. Apparently Hugh’s daughter heard the demos and told him that he should lip-sync because “that guy is awesome, and I don’t think you’re gonna be as good.”. Here was another perfectly good opportunity to at least mention Jeremy’s name, but no. He is only referred to as “that demo singer” who “must have had some pipes on him.“.
The fact that Jeremy worked so hard and did so much to help with the early stages of that movie and then got treated like this?? Absolutely Unacceptable.
Do I still love The Greatest Showman? Yes, of course. Will I ever be able to watch it without feeling at least a little bit sad and angry on Jeremy’s behalf? Probably not. Am I going to continue ranting about this to anyone who is willing to hear the story? Absolutely.
And that, my friends, is more or less the full story of Jeremy’s involvement in The Greatest Showman.
Here is a link to @dontyouknowemma-itsyou‘s audio that they so graciously said I could use to back up my rant story here. So you can hear Jeremy tell the story himself and hear him sing parts of the songs. :)

_The New York Times, which for years has maintained that U.S. airmen’s statements about use of biological weapons during the Korean War were “false confessions” obtained by Chinese and North Korean torture, never acknowledged the following submission sent to its opinion section in November 2020. I am publishing the article instead at CounterPunch, which is not afraid of uncomfortable truths._

It’s been 70 years since the beginning of the Korean War. For young adults in their twenties today, that’s ancient history. It is as distant to them as the 1905 Russo-Japanese War was to me when I was 20 years old! But in both China and North Korea, the memory of the Korean War and charges of war crimes against America from that war remain a vivid part of the national consciousness, stoked at various times by the regimes in charge.
The North Korean and Chinese allegations of American use of biological weapons during the Korean War made headlines at the time, and the controversy over U.S. Air Force officers admitting under enemy interrogation details of germ warfare attacks rocked the U.S. defense establishment. In 1998, scholars connected to the Cold War International History Project (CWIHP) at the Wilson Center published documents that they claimed showed the germ warfare charges were a hoax, “a grand piece of political theater,” as Milton Leitenberg, Senior Research Fellow at the Center for International and Security Studies at the University of Maryland, [notably put it][3].

_From CIA document release, “Baptism by Fire,” File #_[ _1952-03-06a.pdf_][5]
  [5]: <http://web.archive.org/web/20170127160812/https://www.cia.gov/library/readingroom/docs/1952-03-06a.pdf>
But in 2010, the CIA declassified hundreds of communications intelligence, or COMINT, daily reports from the Korean War. U.S. historians have mostly ignored this release. Over the past few years, I have undertaken an examination of these documents and found more than two dozen that were pertinent to the biological warfare charges. As I demonstrated in a [September 2020 essay][6] on the topic at Medium.com, these [documents][7] vividly portray the reactions and responses of North Korean and Chinese military units responding to biological weapons attack.
  [6]: <https://jeff-kaye.medium.com/a-real-flood-of-bacteria-and-germs-communications-intelligence-and-charges-of-u-s-4decafdc762>   [7]: <https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/7207516-BW-COMINT-Baptism-Files.html>
What follows are some samples from the entire batch of reports. The grammar and syntax can seem off at times, as the U.S. military and CIA lacked experienced linguists during this period.
Relying on information from the codebreakers at the Armed Forces Security Agency, the predecessor of today’s National Security Agency, a top-secret March 6 CIA report read, “An unidentified Chinese Communist unit on 26 February reported that ‘yesterday it was discovered that in our bivouac area there was a real flood of bacteria and germs from a plane by the enemy. Please supply us immediately with an issue of DDT that we may combat this menace, stop the spread of this plague, and eliminate all bacteria.’”
Another CIA report stated that on 3 March a “North Korean coastal security unit in eastern Korea reported… that UN bacteriological warfare agents in the surrounding area had prevented the movement of transportation since 21 February. Later in the day the unit reported to Pyongyang that ‘Pupyong (just southwest of Hamhung)… is the contaminated area. According to the correct news, no one can pass through it. If you do not act quickly, the 12th and 13th guard stations will have fallen into starvation conditions.’” [Parenthesis in original]
Then we have the following from a 6 March report: “Two coastal security stations in northeastern Korea reported on 11 March that ‘the bacteria bomb classified as mosquito, fly, and flea were dispersed,’ and ‘an enemy plane dropped ants, fleas, mosquitos, flies and crickets.’” The emphasis on insects reminds us that the Communists alleged at the time that the U.S. was working secretly with the former scientists of Japan’s Unit 731, who experimented extensively with the use of insect vectors in germ warfare. During this period and for years afterward, the [U.S. falsely denied][8] that Japan’s scientists had committed war crimes and attacked China with biological weapons during World War II.
  [8]: <https://www.laguardia.edu/maus/files/ethics-ch-16.pdf>
According to a 21 March CIA COMINT report, “a North Korean message, probably from the 23rd Brigade in western Korea, reports the alleged dropping of bacteria in the area occupied by the ‘18th Regiment, 4th Division.’”
A 9 May report: ‘They dropped spiders and ants over Songjin city… today,’ a North Korean coastal security station in northeastern Korea reported…. The message continues that the alleged drop area has been isolated and is being investigated by ‘the plague prevention work committee.’”
Not all the reports verified the use of bacterial weapons. In a 25 March intercept from a North Korean battalion in the Hamhung area, a North Korean military sanitation officer, sent to affirm a supposed biological warfare attack “reported that the policeman’s report was false and that the flies ‘were not caused from bacterial weapon but from the fertilizers on the place.’” In other words, not only were the attacks not a hoax, but Communist officials examined such reports from the field on the spot and noted cases where the accusations were mistaken, or found in some cases that no insects carried infectious material.
As Milton Leitenberg stated in a [2016 essay][9], which otherwise maintained the germ war allegations were untrue, the charges themselves remain 70 years after the fact “an issue of great importance to those concerned with arms control and allegations of the use of Weapons of Mass Destruction.” He was right. This alleged war crime is of high importance, and achieving peace with nuclear-armed China and North Korea depends, in part, on being honest about past transgressions of the United States against those countries.
  [9]: <https://cissm.umd.edu/research-impact/publications/chinas-false-allegations-use-biological-weapons-united-states-during>
Both the alleged Soviet documents presented back in 1998 by Mr. Leitenberg and scholar Kathryn Weathersby, and also a later purported memoir by Chinese doctor Wu Zhili, which also [alleged falsification][10] of the BW evidence, cannot withstand the failure of those documents, whose provenance has always been obscure, to withstand independent corroboration by external sources of information, not least, from the CIA COMINT documents themselves.
  [10]: <https://www.questia.com/library/journal/1P3-3957054041/a-chinese-admission-of-false-korean-war-allegations>
The Leitenberg/Weathersby documents allege that Communist in-fighting over the BW “hoax” led to a cessation of Communist charges of germ warfare by early 1953. But that’s not true. The charges continued throughout 1953 (as this [_New York Times_][11]article described) and for long afterward. Even more telling, the CWIHP documents failed to tell a coherent story, moving around the date of the alleged falsification of BW attack sites from _before_ to then _after_ an international team of investigators arrived to examine the charges. The date is crucial because the time to organize a large-scale deception — one that would involve hundreds of eyewitness reports given to investigators, the collection of bomb fragments, the testing materials and samples from alleged bacterial attack, etc. — would take some time, if it could be successfully done at all.
  [11]: <https://www.nytimes.com/1953/09/08/archives/germ-war-confessions.html>
There were other problems with the CWIHP documents, which only document from two to four sites of simulated biowarfare attack. But two investigation commissions documented dozens of sites of infection following U.S. air drops of contaminated insects, feathers, and other materials. Neither Mr. Leitenberg nor Ms. Weathersby has ever explained that issue, except to surmise that there may be documents that have yet to surface. In any case, the old fraud accusations seem moot now that we have evidence of Communist military units during the Korean War responding privately to each other regarding the vicissitudes of biological weapons attack.
Wherever the long denials of U.S. use of biological weapons during the Korean War may have originated, and no matter what the authority behind them, the denials fade away in the face of new unassailable documentation from U.S. government records of germ warfare attacks against North Korean and Chinese military units. The question now is how will U.S. historians, political scientists, the press, and the public respond to this turnabout regarding the old germ war charges.

The U.S. record regarding the acknowledgment of atrocities during the Korean War is poor. In January 2001, President Clinton did issue a statement expressing “regret” for American killings in July 1950 of hundreds of unarmed South Korean civilians at No Gun Ri. As the _New York Times_ [noted at the time][13], Clinton’s “statement fell short of the apology many Koreans have demanded.”
  [13]: <https://www.nytimes.com/2001/01/11/world/army-admits-giacutes-in-korea-killed-civilians.html>
It is time for a reckoning with our past. If we expect change in China and North Korea, then there must be change in the United States. Author Nicolson Baker has recently called for the declassification of all records from the Korean War. Perhaps a President Joe Biden administration will consider revising a policy that has not worked for decades, and as part of a general peace offensive in the region, finally admit American responsibility for its actions, including use of biological weapons. With such an admission, the U.S. could then call for a turning of the page and a new day of openness and peaceful coexistence in East Asia.

Leonardo- Oneshot (TMNT 2014/2016)
Tumblr media
Sneaking into the lair that afternoon probably wasn't the best idea. You knew the boys would be there. But usually they were preoccupied, so you figured you could sneak in and grab a pack of frozen peas from the fridge. As you were inching past the main area, you jumped when a body landed in front of you.
The noise caught Mikey's attention from across the room and you winced. You looked up at the red clad turtle giving an awkward wave. "H-Hey there Raph how's it going." He just offered a smirk, crossing his arms. "Ya got into another fight didn't ya." you sighed, pulling down your hoodie from over your head. Leo walked in at that moment, and when he saw the bruise on your face, he went into protective mood almost immediately.
"What happened, are you okay?" Mikey jumped from behind the couch, laughing. "Aww man they got you good, How many were there this time?" you grinned. "Three guys and they were pretty big. I knocked down two of them, but the last one got a lucky shot before I socked him." you raise your bruised knuckles boastfully, and Mikey raised his hand to give you a high five. "Heck yeah!" Leo sent a disapproving look to his brother. "I mean bad (Y/N). Bad." you giggled at Mikey's attempt, he was still showing you a thumbs up when Leo turned his back.
"We have to get that cleaned up before it gets infected." Leo spoke sternly. You just followed reluctantly. You learned not to oppose Leo because he'd just keep pestering you. On his way, he stopped by the small fridge, grabbing an ice pack. You tried your best not to stare as he walked. Something about the way that Leo carried himself always drew you in. Those big broad shoulders, strong arms.
"Nice ass.."
"Hmm, did you say something?" you glanced at him in shock. "N-No! I-I was just thinking out loud don't mind me." you started laughing, and a smile rose on Leo's lips despite noticing how you were fidgeting awkwardly. If he decided to bend over at any point you would definitely pass out. He stepped into his room, and you entered, taking a seat on his bed. He was shuffling through the drawer. When he got the items he was searching for, he sat down next to you.
His eyes were scanning your injury. It was kind of nice, having his attention on you. Sometimes you wondered about the real reason behind your need to get into fights. Maybe it's because you knew he'd always take care of you. He ripped open a small alcoholic pad, raising it to your forehead. "This might sting a little." He warned. You nod, and he pressed it lightly to you. You closed your eyes in response, brows knitting slightly. He dabbed it a few times, cleaning the area. When he was finished, he blew on it lightly.
You flushed at that. Keeping your eyes closed. If you opened them at that point, you were sure he'd figure out exactly what his small actions did to you. Getting a small bandage, he covered the bruise, smiling. "That's much better." you finally opened your eyes, thankful that he was no longer right next to your face. You could maintain some composure at this distance. His focus moved to your slightly bloodied knuckles. He took your hands softly, and you assumed he'd start applying the alcohol. But he just stared at them for a while. It made you feel a bit guilty, the worry he showed.
"I really wish you wouldn't get into these fights. I'm scared one day you may get into more than you can handle. " you looked away, sort of disappointed in yourself. Ever since you entered high school, fighting felt like your second nature. You didn't have the best temper, and if it was one thing you hated it was bullies. At the beginning you made it clear to, so after you kicked the ass of the sorry sap who thought your quietness meant you were some kind of softie.
After that you sometimes went out of your way to help some of the other kids who weren't as strong at standing up for themselves. You guess it was the turtle's influence. They fought for people every single day, so why couldn't you. It wasn't like you couldn't handle yourself either. It's just, it wasn't always a fair fight. And you weren't the type of person to back down. Three against one. No problem. Which landed you right where you were at this very moment. "I'm sorry Leo." you really were. "I know it's irresponsible. It's kinda why I came here. If my mom sees me like this again she's gonna lose it." you clenched your fists, and Leo caught the action.
"I just really hate it when I see other people getting taken advantage of. W-When I..when I was in middle school, kids pushed me around everyday. One of them broke three of my ribs." Leo froze, he had no idea. You never told him that before.
"My mom she.." you smiled recalling the memory. "She barged in there and almost got in a fist fight with the principal because he claimed there was nothing he could do, kids played rough. " you took another breath, still not ready to look at Leo. "Even though she gets on my ass sometimes, she always taught me it was wrong to stand by and watch other people get hurt. I spent so many days hoping someone would help me, but no one did. How am I better than the bullies if I watch someone else go through the same thing. " you finally raised your head, and the admiration on Leo's eyes made you swallow nervously.
"I think it's amazing that you're willing to do so much for people you don't even know." giggling a bit, you averted your eyes. "I-I mean I think it would help if I was a ninja turtle though." you joked. You just needed to do something to calm yourself down. When Leo's hand touched your cheek, you finally looked directly at him.
"I really admire what you're trying to do (Y/N). I just wish you didn't have to get hurt in the process."
Leo really knew what to say to make you blush.
"I-I'll be more careful from now on." It wasn't a promise that you would avoid fighting, but he supposed it was a start. Leo smiled. "I'll hold you to that." Looks like you'd have to become a model student, at least for now. Leo looked content, and he started back prepping your hands, cleaning and wrapping your hands quite efficiently. When he was finished, you flexed your hands with a smile. "Thanks Leo! You really are good at this. But I guess with all the times you've helped me you must have become a pro now." He chuckled.
"Between you and Raph, I'm basically a full time doctor." He was gathering the pieces of bloody cotton and bandage strips to toss into the trash. You just watched him, and when he turned, he caught your stare. "Are you alright, does it hurt somewhere else?" He moved back to the bed, checking to see if maybe he missed a bruise, or any injury in general.
You were fine. You'd gotten used to pain a long time ago, so you barely felt much but numbness from the bruises. You're heart however, that's the thing that was having a little issue now. And the reason was the blue clad turtle right in front of you. "Leo, since I'm gonna be steering clear of fights for a while, I'll need a new way to burn calories." he raised an eyebrow. "Well, I can show you a few things to help you, is there something in particular you had in mind?"
"I do.." you whisper. For a second, your eyes land on his lips. It takes him awhile to get what you're suggesting. When he does, you can tell he's painfully flustered. His eyes dart to you in surprise, and when he speaks, his voice is a little higher than before. "A-Are you-" he clears his throat in an attempt to regain his casual tone. This time your tongue swipes your bottom lip, and he gulps. When you shift closer, he's forgotten that it's important to breathe. He can't seem to get his breath. You're getting closer, and with the fluttering of your eyelashes, he's already gone. Your lips meet, and Leo groans at the back of his throat.
You smile against his lips, grateful that you haven't misread all the signs so far. You push forward slightly to deepen the kiss, and you're stunned when Leo retaliates, pressing you into the bed. He pins both your hands above your head, and you're thinking you love this side of him. It's not what you expected, but in no way are you complaining.
He takes full control, exploring your mouth. It's a breathtaking experience, literally. When you let out a soft moan, Leo's releases your wrists quickly, looking down at you a bit frantically. "A-Am I hurting you?" He's a bit breathless, and you give a pleased smile.
"Not at all, it feels good Leo.." your sultry tone makes his eyes darken. When he leans forward this time, his lips hover over your ear, and he presses a kiss just below. With a blissful sigh, you're one hundred percent sure you won't last. "Is that right?" you nod, "Really good.." you mutter. He's the one smiling now. With a soft kiss to your lips, he can't help but think he's a little glad you're a bit of a troublemaker.

The Best Korean Dramas on Netflix to Watch Right Now
https://ift.tt/3iIUp0r
South Korea is one of the world’s biggest exporters of popular culture. From K-pop to K-dramas, Parasite to BTS, the East Asian country knows how to reach an international audience. Korean TV, especially K-dramas, have long been of interest to western markets, but it’s no longer just the Korean diaspora or romance drama fans underserved by western markets checking out K-dramas, international watchers of Korean dramas have become much more “mainstream” in the last few years, especially with Netflix’s increased focus and investment in the region.

Why Are Squid Game’s English-Language Actors So Bad?

Squid Game’s Most Heartbreaking Hour is Also Its Best
By Kayti Burt
Netflix has played a major role in this expansion of Korean TV into the global market. The streamer has not only scooped up an impressive backlog of Korean originals as a global distributor, but, since 2016, has been investing in the Korean TV industry at the production level. At the beginning of 2021, Netflix released an official statement announcing the leasing of two production facilities outside of Seoul, citing the move as “another important example of our continued commitment to investing in Korea’s creative ecosystem.” According to the release, from 2015 to 2020, Netflix invested over 700 million dollars in Korean content. The company also has multi-year content partnerships with CJ ENM/Studio Dragon and JTBC.
Suffice to say, Netflix has a solid Korean TV section, filled with some of the best K-dramas around, both new and old. If you’re new to the world of Korean TV or if you’re simply looking for your next watch, why not try out one of the following…
Crash Landing On You (2019)
The absolute top secret love story of a chaebol heiress who made an emergency landing in North Korea because of a paragliding accident and a North Korean special officer who falls in love with her and who is hiding and protecting her.
If you’re at all tapped into the K-drama scene, then you have at least heard of Crash Landing on You if not binged it multiple times. An original production from Netflix, Crash Landing On You pairs rom-com and character drama elements with an exploration of the cultural pain inherent in the separation between North and South Korea. With charismatic and vulnerable performances from veteran K-drama leads Son Ye-jin as South Korean heiress Yoon Se-ri and Hyun Bin as North Korean soldier Ri Jeong-hyeok; some gorgeous production values; and a memorably melodramatic soundtrack, Crash Landing On You is a whirlwind action-romance that was one of the best shows of 2020, full stop.
Kingdom (2019-present)
In a kingdom defeated by corruption and famine, a mysterious plague spreads to turn the infected into monsters. The crown prince, framed for treason and desperate to save his people, sets out on a journey to unveil what evil lurks in the dark.
If you prefer your TV more horror-driven, Korean TV has some notable shows for you. One of the most internationally popular is Kingdom, a historical zombie drama about a 17th century crown prince who has to fight against a mysterious plague of flesh-eating zombies that threatens to overtake his kingdom. Most K-dramas are structured to tell their entire story in one season, but Kingdom has already had two seasons with a third predicted to be on the way, as well as a one-off special that just premiered on Netflix called Kingdom: Ashin of the North. If you’re looking to get into a longer-running K-drama that favors horror over romance, this could be the one for you.
Squid Game (2021)
45.6 billion won. 456 contestants stake their lives on childhood games.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably already heard of Squid Game, which is on track to become Netflix’s most popular series ever. The Korean social thriller tells the story of a group of 456 desperate contestants who agree to compete in a deadly competition for the chance to win the kind of money that could change their lives forever. Socially relevant and compulsively watchable, Squid Game takes a familiar premise and makes it new again with compelling characters, exquisite visual style, and cultural specificity.
Hometown Cha Cha Cha (2021)
When things go awry in the city, a dentist decides to go back to her quiet seaside hometown for a fresh start. There, she finds herself at odds with the village go-to handyman who’s always up to help and fix what’s broken—perhaps even matters of the heart.
If you’re looking for something a little chiller after the horrors of Squid Game, try Hometown Cha Cha Cha, which is basically a Hallmark Christmas movie in series form (which is to say a cozy romance). The series, which is currently “airing” weekly on Netflix, sees a big city dentist named Hye-jin decide to open an office in the small seaside town of Gongjin, where she once visited with her family as a child. It all happens on a bit of a whim, with Hye-jin not fully prepared for the transition to rural life in a town where everyone knows everyone’s business. Enter Du-sik, the town’s darling jack-of-all-trades, who helps the townspeople by doing any and every job they might need. The two couldn’t be more different, but fate seems to have brought them together. You probably have an idea of what happens next…
When the Camellia Blooms (2019)
Dong-baek (Kong Hyo-jin) is the owner of a small-town bar called Camellia. Her ordinary life turns topsy-turvy when three men enter her life — a good guy, a bad guy, and a miserly guy. What kind of stories will unfold in this sleepy town full of colorful characters?
If you’re looking for another K-drama set outside of Seoul, When the Camellia Blooms is the story of a single mom Dong-baek, who moves to the fictional town of Ongsan where she opens a bar called Camellia. When local police officer Yong-sik declares his love for Dong-baek, she is initially not interested, but the two become closer the more time they spend together. Thrown in a solid supporting cast and a serial killer subplot and you’ve got yourself one of the most popular K-dramas in recent years.
It’s Okay to Not Be Okay (2020)
Desperate to escape from his emotional baggage and the heavy responsibility he’s had all his life, a psychiatric ward worker begins to heal with help from the unexpected—a woman who writes fairy tales but doesn’t believe in them.
There’s still a taboo around addressing mental illness in Korea, which is one of the many reasons why this 2020 drama about Gang-tae, a young man who is a caregiver at a psychiatric hospital, and Moon-young, a children’s author living with antisocial personality disorder, made such a splash. While the romance at its center is great, It’s Okay to Not Be Okay really shines in its exploration of Gang-tae’s relationship with his brother, Sang-tae, who is on the autism spectrum. In a press conference promoting the show (via Metro Style), Sang-tae actor Oh Jung-se said of the character: “If you meet someone like Sang-tae, who is on the autism spectrum, on the street, I think it would be nice if people could think ‘I would like to be with that person’ instead of ‘I would like to help that person.’”
Boys Over Flowers (2009)
Unassuming high school girl Jan-di stands up to — and eventually falls for — a spoiled rich kid who belongs to the school’s most powerful clique.
A K-drama classic, Boys Over Flowers follows working class student Geum Jan-di as she arrives at the elite Shinhwa High School on scholarship, only to meet and be unimpressed by a group of privileged boys known collectively as F4 who rule the school. The drama follows Jan-di as she goes from bullying target of F4 leader Jun-pyo to the object of his obsession. It’s a classic enemies-to-lovers set-up, and one that while cliche, is still worth a watch over a decade later, especially if you’re interested in checking out one of the most iconic K-dramas of all time.
Itaewon Class (2020)
On the vibrant streets of Itaewon, something is about to shake up the local food scene. Going up against the most powerful conglomerate in the industry, underdog Park Sae-ro-yi and his band of determined misfits seek to take over Itaewon and turn their ambitious dreams into reality.
Korean TV knows how to melodrama, and this story of revenge and romance set in Seoul’s popular Itaewon area leans into intense catharsis. Itaewon Class follows Park Sae-Ro-Yi, the owner of an up-and-coming Itaewon restaurant called DanBam that becomes a refuge for a group of social outcasts. Together, they work to take down the same business mogul responsible for the death of Sae-Ro-Yi’s father years earlier. Itaewon Class was extremely popular both in South Korea and internationally, and featured the first transgender character in a mainstream K-drama. Added bonus: the Itaewon Class soundtrack includes an original song from BTS’ V.
Mr Sunshine (2018)
In 1905, a Korean American U.S. marine officer returns to his homeland on a diplomatic assignment. Coping with his painful past in Korea as an orphaned servant boy, he finds himself in a complicated relationship with an aristocrat’s daughter.
If you’re into historically-driven period drama, then check out the beautifully-shot Mr. Sunshine. The K-drama is set in the late 19th and early 20th century in Hanseong, the city that would become Seoul and follows activists fighting for Korea’s independence. The story follows Go Ae-shin, an orphaned noblewoman who trains to be a sniper in the Righteous Army, the civilian militia that fought against the occupying Japanese forces, and Eugene Choi, a man who escaped slavery in Korea to become a U.S. marine, only to return to his homeland where he falls in love with Ae-shin. The series uses real-life history, including Shinmiyangyo, the Spanish-American War, the assassination of Empress Myeongseong, the Russo-Japanese War, Gojong’s forced abdication, and the Battle of Namdaemun as a backdrop for its epic story.
Signal (2016)
A cold-case profiler in 2015 and a detective in 1989 work together to solve a series of related murders spanning three decades using a special walkie-talkie to communicate with each other.
This premise has been used a lot—from 2000 Dennis Quaid/Jim Caviezel thriller Frequency to the 2016 CW TV adaptation of the same name—and for good reason. An analog device allows two people to communicate across time, and they must work to solve a murder together. It not only makes for compelling character drama, as two people become closer but are separated by years, but also is a fresh twist on the serial killer narrative. In K-drama Signal, the analog device is a walkie-talkie, and the characters on either temporal side of it are contemporary criminal profiler Park Hae-young and 1989-based Detective Cha Soo-hyun. If you’re looking for a good crime thriller, Signal could be it.
Hospital Playlist (2020-present)
Friends since undergrad school, five doctors remain close and share a love for music while working at the same hospital.
Like Kingdom, Hospital Playlist is the rare K-drama that tells its story across multiple seasons. The hospital drama just finished airing its second season weekly on Netflix, continuing its story about a group of doctors in their 40s who have been best friends since medical school. A true ensemble drama, Hospital Playlist is perfect for fans of Grey’s Anatomy but feels unique in its centering of a friend-group with a such a long history.
Vincenzo (2021)
Bringing his mafia past back with him to South Korea, Song Joong-ki stars as notorious Italian lawyer Vincenzo who isn’t afraid to lend his bloodstained hands to beat the untouchable conglomerates in their own game.
If you just watched the dramatic opening of Vincenzo, set in Italy days after the death of a mafia boss, you might think you’re in for a self-serious organized crime drama. But the Netflix K-drama quickly shifts into a story much more tonally complex. Part romance, part drama, part action thriller, Vincenzo has something for everyone. It follows Vincenzo (Space Sweepers‘ Song Joong-ki), a Korean lawyer raised by an Italian mafia family who must flee the country following his father’s death. As part of his plan of escape, Vincenzo travels to Korea to recover a stash of hidden gold under an old apartment building set for demolition by a corrupt corporation called the Babel Group. Because of this dilemma, Vincenzo becomes unlikely allies with the group of eccentric citizens who live in the building, as well as with a passionate and moral lawyer who has a vendetta against the Babel Group for his own reasons.
The “Reply” Series (2012-2016)
Take a nostalgic trip back to the late 1980s through the lives of five families and their five teenage kids living in a small neighborhood in Seoul.
The Reply series is one of the most popular cable dramas in Korean TV history. It launched in 2012 with Reply 1997 before continuing with Reply 1994 in 2013 and Reply 1988 in 2015. The ambitiously-structured series follows a group of friends and their kids, telling the story in present-day in addition to flashbacks. Featuring a fun soundtrack, as well as some incredibly performances, the Reply series is well worth a watch for anyone who loves character drama with a nostalgic twist.
Prison Playbook (2017)
With only days before his major league baseball debut, pitcher Kim Je-hyeok unexpectedly lands himself behind bars. He must learn to navigate his new world with its own rules if he wants to survive.
Prison Playbook is much more slow-paced than many of the selections on the list, but this character drama is worth the dedication. Though it’s often touted as a “black comedy,” it’s much more tonally light than that suggests, despite the subject matter. The story follows baseball pitcher Kim Je Hyeok, who is incarcerated days before his major league debut for assaulting the attempted rapist of his sister. It follows his life within prison, along with the lives of some of the other inmates and guards, including his old best friend, Lt. Lee Joon Ho, who is a correctors officer. Created by Lee Woo-jung, who also made the aforementioned Reply series, Prison Playbook is one of the most popular K-dramas in Korean cable history ever.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Sweet Home (2020)
As humans turn into savage monsters, one troubled teenager and his neighbors fight to survive and to hold onto their humanity.
It’s been well-documented that Song Kang is a K-drama darling. The actor has appeared in many a romantic K-drama, including Netflix’s Nevertheless and Love Alarm. Sweet Home, however, is his rare horror appearance, and it’s well worth a watch just to see Song in a completely different context. Of course, this apocalyptic horror story has other qualities too, and holds the honor of being the first Korean series to enter the U.S. Netflix Top Ten. Based on a Naver (aka Korean Google) webcomic of the same name, Sweet Home follows Cha Hyun-soo (Song), a high school student who moves into an apartment building after the deaths of his parents, only to discover that the building also happens to be the home of a species of monsters set on world domination.
Nevertheless (2021)
Like a butterfly hopelessly attracted to a flower, this art student can’t seem to resist the mysterious young man who captures her attention. But the more they get romantically involved, the sooner she will have to decide—will getting close be worth it, when he doesn’t believe in relationships?
Speaking of Song Kang… Nevertheless is the latest K-drama to star the 27-year-old actor. The romantic drama stars Han So-hee as Yoo Na-bi, university art student who no longer believes in love following discovering her boyfriend has been cheating on her. When she meets Song’s Park Jae-eon, she is immediately intrigued. Though the two share an immediate attraction, they resist entering into a relationship due to their respective uncertainties about love. Based on a popular webcomic of the same name, Nevertheless feels unique in its treatment of modern dating life in Korea, depicting some of the more realistic, often internal struggles of what its like to date in your 20s.
My Mister (2018)
In a world that is less than kind, a young woman and a middle-aged man develop a sense of kinship as they find warmth and comfort in one another.
If you’re in the mood to cry, try My Mister, a drama about a financially-disadvantaged young woman just trying to stay afloat as she takes care of her sick grandmother amid mounting debt and a much more financially-privileged middle-aged man who is also being crushed by the weight of his life. The two work together, and form a (mostly) platonic relationship that helps both of them heal. Understated and deeply emotional at the same time, My Mister will subvert so many K-drama expectations in clever ways.
Memories of the Alhambra (2018)
While looking for the cryptic creator of an innovative augmented-reality game, an investment firm executive meets a woman who runs a hostel in Spain.
If you’re looking for another K-drama starring Crash Landing on You‘s Hyun Bin (and of course you are), then look no further than Memories of the Alhambra, a 2018 K-drama with an absolutely batshit (read: amazing) premise. Hyun stars as Yoo Jin-woo, a CEO who travels to Spain in search of the creator of an AR game set in the Spanish medieval fortress Alhambra. Once there, Jin-woo is pulled into a reality-bending mystery with life-or-death stakes and some unpredictable twists that I don’t want to spoil for you.
Romance is a Bonus Book (2019)
A gifted writer who’s the youngest editor-in-chief ever at his publishing company gets enmeshed in the life of a former copywriter desperate for a job.
Ostensibly based on the TV series Younger, Romance is a Bonus Book is a rom-com set in the publishing industry world. It follows single mom Kang Dan Yi as she struggles to reenter the workforce following her divorce. When he lies about her background to get a job, her life becomes tangled up with childhood friend and publishing phenom Cha Eun Ho.
I began watching this series to see how it compared to the U.S. version of the show, of which I am a fan. Honestly, these two series have only the most superficial details of their plots in common, which is par for the course in many adaptations. Romance is a Bonus Book is much more romance-centric than Younger, which balances the love life of its central protagonist with the many other relationships and concerns she has in her life. But that isn’t a bad thing. They are two very different shows with their own interests and strengths, but if you’re a fan of both rom-coms and the publishing industry, then both Romance is a Bonus Book and Younger are worth a watch.
Black (2017)
A man possessed by death. A woman who can see death. The earthly and the afterworld collide dangerously.
One character is possessed by the Grim Reaper. The other can see deadly spirits. Only Korean can turn this premise into a heartbreaking romance, as the two work together to save people marked for death. If you’re looking for a spooky season watch, you can’t go wrong with Black, which is a delightful (and, honestly, pretty complex) hodgepodge of Korean horror all wrapped up in a rom-com package.

MAG 022 - Colony
Summary: Martin Blackwood dictates his statement regarding “a close encounter with something I believe to have once been Jane Prentiss.”
So can we all agree that Martin is the most adorable person ever and needs to be protected at all costs? Because within the first minute of this episode he was firmly placed in the Smol Bean category of my brain, and there he shall forever be. I am quite certain I will end up crying about this man at some point.
I’m really glad I listened to this episode again after finishing the season, because even in the short time between this episode and the season finale, so much of my opinions on Jonathan himself and on the relationship between Jonathan and Martin have changed. I know, this episode was about Martin - but it was also the first time we actually got to see these two characters interact, as opposed to Jonathan just making offhand comments about Martin’s supposedly subpar work. (Poor Martin. Mean Jonathan.)
I love how Martin says, “I just want to make a statement about what happened to me. I mean...it’s what we do!” and Jonathan’s immediate reply is, “No, what we do is research statements - usually those made by liars and the mentally unwell.” His tone holds its usual amount of derision, but after listening to the last few episodes of S1, I can’t find it in myself to hold it against him anymore. (I never claimed to be good at reading people.) Towards the end of the episode, Jonathan tells Martin he can sleep in the Archive, basically doing what I think was the Jonathan version of reassuring him, by telling him how safe it is. His tone isn’t reassuring - it’s very factual, as he lists off all the different ways the Institute is a safe place and by telling Martin he’ll ask Elias about adding some extra security. But if Jonathan were just trying to get Martin to sleep there so he wouldn’t lose a research assistant, he probably could’ve just told Martin to stay there and Martin would’ve listened. He seems to care about Martin in a way that isn’t shown in his offhand remarks in previous episodes. And while there’s a slight admonishment when he says, “No, what we do is research statements”, it smacks more of a concerned admonishment than an angry one to me. Conclusion: Jonathan is, as always, terrible with people, but not because he doesn’t care.
I’m also wondering how much of the “No, what we do is research statements” line was Jonathan and how much was Elias. It reminded me of what Jonathan said when he was contemplating bringing up the Leitner situation to Elias in episode 17: “I know he’ll just give me the old “record and study, not interfere or contain” speech again”. In particular, the word “again” indicates it’s something they’ve butted heads on before. It’s interesting that in this episode Jonathan seems to take Elias’ position on the issue. It could be that he’s just trying to be responsible in a general sense and that he doesn’t want to be liable if anything happens to Martin. But, taken with what I said in the previous paragraph, it could also be read as “I’d like to discourage this man from further endangering himself in the future because I care about him and I cannot/do not know how to express this directly, so I will hide behind what my own boss has told me many times.”
On the subject of Martin himself - I don’t think I can properly express how much I already love this adorable, nervous man. There were just so many great lines from him in this episode, whether for characterization or for humor - and often it was both. The long beat of silence after “Well, I need to tell someone what happened, and you can vouch for the soundness of my mind, can’t you?” Also: “Look, I know you hate the word, but it was really…spooky.” And “I was heading home when I got to thinking, and…I was worried I hadn’t really done enough investigation for you”. And “I’ve catalogued and looked into enough of these cases to know that following the noise is always a really, really bad idea, but…I mean…it’s my job, isn’t it?” And finally, at the very end when Jonathan offers him a place to stay at the Archive, he’s so flustered, both at the offer and at the very idea that Jonathan believes him. He’s basically tripping over himself and cringing as he gives his own statement, so hung up on the idea that he won’t be believed or that this isn’t enough.
And who can blame him? If you really think about what happened to him...I can’t blame him for thinking he wouldn’t be believed or that no one would be concerned for his safety. From his perspective, he just spent thirteen days alone in his apartment with no electricity, no company, no way to communicate with the outside world - and, to his knowledge, not a single person checked up on him! Obviously that was a good thing, because if someone had come to his door, they would have been met with Jane Prentiss - but Martin went for almost two weeks without a single good night’s sleep, eating ready meals and canned food, being constantly startled by her knocking, and he had to have wondered, at least once, why no one even wondered where he was.
One key to Martin’s survival was that he had plenty of water: “Luckily there was no problem with my water supply, so I had plenty to drink. I’m just glad none of them thought to come up through the pipes.” I genuinely can’t tell if Jonny’s hanging a lampshade on the issue or if we’re supposed to wonder why the worms never came up through the pipes, but in any case I am wondering it. Another key to his survival is that, despite not having a peephole, Martin somehow knew when she’d gone - and he wasn’t entirely sure how he knew. He surmises that the musty smell surrounding her must have been gone, and he didn’t hear any knocking for a little while, but in the end he has to confirm her absence by simply opening his door - which, if he were wrong, would have led to certain death - or, as he says at one point, “worse”.
Another mystery to me is when Martin goes into the basement of the building on Boothby Rd the first time and this happens: “I didn’t like the way my shadow moved. The light from the window behind me cast it pretty clearly on the floor, and looking at it I swear the edges seemed to move…it’s was like a, like an undulation…like, like they were being shifted by something.” He doesn’t follow this up with “and then I noticed my ‘shadow’ was actually worms on the floor”, so this doesn’t seem like a Jane Prentiss thing to me, or a Carlos Vittery’s spider thing either. And if it isn’t associated with either of the two known Boothby Rd-related entities, then it was something else entirely, which has me worried. But that’s the only mention of anything like a shadow being “shifted” in this episode, so for now I’m hoping I’m just reading too much into things.
There were so many excellent visual descriptions in this episode, so kudos to Jonny as always, and in this case kudos also to Alex for the performance. Martin describes the Jane Prentiss worms as “maybe an inch long, with a silver segmented body that goes black at one end, almost like it’s been burned.” This could just be a general creepy description, but I would be remiss if I didn’t point out the “burning” imagery here, given all the times fire and burning have come up before, even though I’m not sure what specifically it might be connected to from previous episodes. More concrete, though, is the difference between Jane Prentiss’ clothing when Martin encounters her and what she was wearing in her first appearance in episode 6. Harriett Lee, her victim in that episode, told Timothy Hodge, the man who gave the statement, that she found Prentiss wearing a long red dress. By contrast, Martin finds her in the basement wearing “a threadbare grey overcoat, though beneath it her legs were bare” (so, she’s no longer wearing the long red dress) and holding “a stained green handkerchief.” The events of episode 6 occurred in late November 2014 - almost a year and a half before Martin’s encounter with her. So why was she still in that area after all that time? We know she isn’t physically unable to leave - she follows Martin all the way to his home in Stockwell. And where did she get the overcoat and the handkerchief? I’m assuming it came from another victim, though she could have stolen them I guess. As far as we know they never did follow up with Timothy Hodge, despite Jonathan noting in that episode that they probably should. Jonathan also hasn’t mentioned looking into missing persons reports from the area either, even though that seems to me like an obvious thing to investigate.
Speaking of investigating...my ears perked up when the owner of the building told Martin that Carlos’ cat now lives with the Sanderson couple in apartment 2. I immediately flashed back to episode 15 and Laura Popham’s missing (presumably dead) sister, Elena Sanderson. (I remembered the name because of the Sanderson sisters, of course. #90schild) I don’t think it’s an actual connection, though, for two reasons: First, it doesn’t fit the timeline. Elena went missing in June 2014, and this Sanderson couple apparently still lives in this building in early 2016. It could be a relative, or maybe she magically reappeared, but I don’t see any specific reason to think either of those things. Second, there are something like 20,000 people with that surname living in England (yay genealogy websites). If it were a less common name, I’d be more suspicious, but as it stands now I’m keeping it in mind but leaning towards it being a coincidence.
Some final thoughts on Jane Prentiss. She apparently “called herself to be a practicing witch and believed [herself] to be infected by a dangerous, unknown parasite.” This is the first time the word “witch” is mentioned in the show (unless you’re counting Julia Montauk going to see The Witches in episode 9 lol), but not the first time we have seen something, or someone, witch-like. There are almost too many examples of things that could be considered “magic” to list, but the ones that stand out to me the most as potentially witch-like are: Mary Key being alive and the bones falling out of the books in episode 4; Agnes Montague/Fielding/whatever her name is and her apparent agelessness in episode 8; Robert Montauk’s heart ritual in the shed in episode 11; the unnamed man’s chanting in the hospital in episode 12; and Angela in episode 14. I’m not sure how any of these might be connected, but now that the word’s been mentioned I’m considering it a possibility.
And lastly...“Keep him. We have had our fun. He will want to see it when the archivist’s crimson fate arrives.” Jonathan’s voice when he read that last part, man. Martin asks what it means, and he sounds genuine, but Jonathan...I think Jonathan was thinking the same thing I am: that “the archivist’s crimson fate” sounds an awful lot like the description of Gertrude Robinson’s death as foretold in the dream from episode 11, particularly in the description of the Institute: “It was this building into which all the veins flowed: every door, every window was solid with them. When the bursts of red light passed into it, the whole building glowed crimson.”
This post is part of a series where I write my thoughts about each episode and obsessively connect dots in an effort to figure out The Big Mysteries of the series. All posts in this series are tagged “is this liveblogging?” Comments and messages are welcome but I have only listened to season 1, so I ask that you not spoil me for anything beyond episode 40. In the words of Jonny Sims…thanks for listening!
Minor spoilers for a later episode in S1 after the cut.
Just have to take a moment to freak out about the fact that I completely forgot about Martin’s description of Jane Prentiss’ skin as “full of holes - deep, black holes just honeycombing every bit of flesh like a…wasps’ nest.” HOW DID I NOT NOTICE THAT HE USED THE EXACT SAME WORDS SHE DID IN HER STATEMENT. Like, I don’t know if it’s significant, or if the description just fit so well that Jonny wanted to reuse it, but...damn.

I’m really trying to hold on. It’s really hard man.. I guess from the outside looking in it seems like my whole world got turned upside down because of a girl but she really was the major thing keeping me going cause I felt like she was the only person who understood me/wasn’t really judgemental of who I really am. My whole life I felt like I never fitted in so I turned to music, poetry, skateboarding, & basketball and that was my escape. Up until around age 12/13 I was pretty much mute. I didn’t talk much. And when I came home there was either no one home or if my parents were home I’d be verbally abused for being so “quiet/secluded in my room” or my mom and I would argue back and forth and it would end with her saying “I wish you got hit by a bus” or “I wish you would die”.. Hearing that often just killed my spirit most of the times. I would then stay in my room longer or even turn to cutting by using a metal hanger. All during that time I was battling my sexuality and the fear from my parents when they would say things like “gays should burn” or other homophobic slurs/speeches. I didn’t know what to do. I hated myself for being gay. I hated that “it had to happen to me”. There were several years where I wish I wasn’t born like this.. fast forward and more trauma just started piling on :( my dad didn’t make it to most of my basketball games because he worked 2 jobs and that hurt a lot because it was something I was really good at and I felt like my parents would be proud/I would be “good enough”.. my dad was then diagnosed with kidney failure during my senior year of hs.. it was scary for us all.. I didn’t want to lose my dad.. for most of my senior year my dad was in and out of the hospital for long periods and I remember one time breaking down in tears because he was in the icu and I thought he was going to die that week.. he wasn’t able to go to my hs graduation because he was in the hospital still so that was another blow. a few months after highschool my mom attempted suicide when I took my little sister on a walk.. we both came home and found her unresponsive on the floor with a suicide note. I had to calm my little sister down while making sure my mom was still alive and while calling 911.. then my dad walked in a few mins later and he started blaming me for what happened and yelling “what did I do!” fast forward to while my mom was in the hospital recovering and both my sisters and I didn’t feel like ourselves.. we didn’t want to do anything and we just kept crying and my dad starts yelling at us/verbally abusing us saying that we shouldn’t be crying and that we need to stop crying. It really sucked.. that feeling on top of everything was painful.. so again fast forward to about 1.5-2 years after hs and my mom decides to separate from my dad and wanted to live in another city and she asked me if I wanted to live with her or stay with my dad. All during this time we never had a good relationship and I thought it was a really good opportunity to build on the relationship with my mom.. then a month or two before we moved to the new city my mom lashed out all of her fears, anger & resentment towards my dad at me saying it’s all my fault and that’s when the panic attacks started. (I’m sorry for the choppy writing.. it’s really hard writing this but I know I need to get it out) I remember a week or so before we moved and all of our stuff was pretty much packed for the move and my mom wanted to see her old best friend one last time at the theatres and have burgers after and that’s when I had my first major panic attack. I was sitting in the theatre and I thought I was dying. It literally felt like a black hole cause I didn’t know what it was at the time. I thought I was having a heart attack so I just waited in the lobby until the movie was over cause I went back in 1 time for a few minutes and another one came. I ended up having 3 or 4 a week for a few months and then went to IOP for 2 months around 2014 and it helped a lot with talking out stuff/processing my thoughts.
But most importantly it helped me see that there were other people out there going through similar things and it made me not feel alone.. fast forward to a year later my dog passed away when we came to visit my dad since it was his turn to watch the dogs and it was also best for him because he was living alone back in our old city :( it was really hard taking my dog to the vet when he passed🥺 a few months after that I started to lose my hearing in one ear from an ear infection and that really brought me down cause I’m a music producer and I rely on my hearing to fine tune stuff.. all during this time while I was losing my hearing I was dating this girl who had cheated on me with several guys/past boyfriends and thats when I really started feeling like I was being kicked while I was down.. literally during the time I was crying about her but mostly why someone would do something like that and take me on a trip just to tell me they still have feelings for their ex/cry about them, my mom had punched feeling in my face for crying about her and told me to stop crying or pack my bags. That was probably one of the most traumatic things because I really felt like I had no one to talk to and I felt really alone. All while my bestfriend back in my old city promised to visit but never did :/ I had no one but my little sis who was my best friend and I’m super grateful she was born cause without her honestly I wouldn’t be here. I literally raised her for 2-3 years and took her everywhere to just escape everything at home. It was a blessing that I had money from music to do all those mini trips/food runs.. it was a huge blessing man. So fast forward to a year later around 2016/2017 my grandfather started having major strokes and was in and out of a hospice and later passed away towards the end of 2017. It was too much all while my mom and little sister had moved to a different state and my dad had a kidney transplant.. I was his caretaker and my older sister didn’t help :/ I literally was breaking down everyday because I was asking why is this all coming down on me :/
I’m literally crying right now because right around that time I met someone really incredible and it just hit me rn. She was the light at the end of the tunnel in a sense. Now that I look back at things, her coming into my life at that time saved me. And maybe writing this was the answer I was looking for as to why I saw her picture 10-15 years before I even met her during the time when all the pain started in my life. Meeting her/her come into my life might be the message that everything’s going to be okay. Man.. idek what to think rn. She really is an angel in a sense cause she saved me from myself and helped me see that I have the ability to heal.. and of course I wish things ended differently cause I still love her but that’s out of my control. I have to heal and move on but also forgive myself and forgive my past and most importantly allow myself to heal. I have to fall in love with myself and love me unconditionally. I want to be one of the greatest music producers ever and have an amazing wife, kids, and beautiful house but that can’t happen if I don’t heal and forgive.
If anyone read this up to this point you’re beyond special to me and I don’t know how to thank you but it means the world to me that you read my story. I don’t like sharing because it’s really painful and makes me feels extremely vulnerable so thank you so much🥺🤧 thank you🤧🙏 I love you🤟💕

A Dog's Way Home
is still my favourite movie, it hits close to home, except that I couldn't be with my Bella for long.
Tumblr media
It was 2016, the year our neighbor's dog, Rocky bit me. I think it was partially my fault for trying to pick his biscuit up for him. I don't know what went on in his canine mind, he probably thought I was going to steal his biscuit. I was crouching down when he bit me on my breast, upper portion of my right breast to be precise. I had to take 9 shots in the duration of a month. I avoided dogs after that incident.
Until in 2017, a senior lady dog (what? I'm not calling her a 'bitch') delivered a litter of 6 teeny tiny puppies in the front yard of the apartment building we lived in.
Tumblr media
They were so freaking adorable. Plus, puppies don't have teeth, they can't bite! I grew attached to them. Probably because I always came back to an empty home. My mum would be at school, my dad would be busy with his distributorship and other businessy stuff. I really liked having someone waiting for me back home. You know, just there to meet me at the door and ask me about my day. So, we (I and my friend from the apartment upstairs) wanted to name them. I suggested we name them after the six alkali metals - Lithium, Sodium, Potassium, Rubidium, Cesium and Francium. (Ugh! Dorky, right?)
But before we could even start to call their names they started dying, one by one. The first pup died in an accident with the landlord's car. The second one broke a carpel, we took him to the vet but they said he was very young and that his paw should heal by itself. But it didn't, he became very frail and slowly wasted away. The third one was very small and malnourished he died after suffering a sinus infection and fever.
Only three were left.
Tumblr media
One had reddish brown fur, another had white fur yet another had black fur with traces of white. Naturally they became Lalu [Lal (লাল) is Bengali for red. Adding an 'u' sound at the end of a word/ someone's name makes it a cute nickname so Lalu (লালু)], Kalu (কালু) [Kalo (কালো) is Bengali for black] and Bhulu (ভুলু) [this one was simply chosen because it rhymed with the other two. The Bengali word for white is shada (সাদা) and shadu (সাদু) is just weird.]
So now we had Lalu, Kalu and Bhulu. Unfortunately, within the next week Lalu died in a motorbike accident. With only two pups left, mama doggie was being extra careful and whatever food we (residents) gave them was ample for them. Not everyone was happy with them, though. So one day, or rather the middle of the night, someone sent them over to the other side of the railway tracks. (Someone had to, how else would they get there?) The apartment was very close to the railway tracks, so much so that one time I could see a dismembered dead body on the tracks after an accident.
I was so shocked to not find the pups in their house (we made them a little house out of cardboard and gave them pieces cloth as blankets because it was winter).
Tumblr media
We looked for them in the neighborhood where they usually hung out. By noon, our housemaid+neighbor told me that Kalu was lying dead on the railway tracks. I was heartbroken, I didn't go anywhere near the tracks because I couldn't bear seeing her dead. I called my mom, crying. She said that it's hard but we have to accept it and that she will come back home early.
Our neighbor from upstairs went to the railway tracks and found Kalu. Turns out, SHE WAS ALIVE. Kalu had hit her head on a rock and was probably unconscious from the shock. I got my hopes up after finding Kalu alive and went looking for Bhulu with my mom. I was worried because Bhulu was still on calcium and vitamin D supplements for his pelvis fracture from an accident. But we couldn't find him.
When we brought Kalu in, she was shivering and one of her eyeballs were misaligned. We wrapped her in blanket and took her home with us into our apartment on 1st floor. She was barely lying there, couldn't stand or even move. The next day we took her to the animal clinic. The vet said that she suffered a haemorrhage in her brain and needed to get 3 shots.
Tumblr media
Those shots worked like magic. Kalu was healthy and active again just like she had always been. She was still on her meds, which I had to feed her very carefully. I usually put the meds in some molten white chocolate. The recovery process was going just fine until that busybody ran out on the streets and was almost run over by motorbike. She scraped her head and was bleeding bad (that's what my mum told me, she was the one who found her while I was at school.) This time the cut was mostly superficial, so regular dressing and ointment did the job. Kalu was now bald. The ointment was in the form of a spray and that was the problem because she won't let me put it on her. I had to spray the ointment on her head while avoiding her eyes all while she ran away from me. Usually my mum covered her eyes while I sprayed the ointment on her head. As the wound healed, Kalu kept scratching her head until she bled from the scab, so I clipped her nails. And she kept slipping on the floor while trying to walk, it was hysterical! Kalu had recovered and she was ready to go out there and conquer the world, except that she didn't want to. She would go out during the day, play with her mom and walk around the neighborhood. But she always came back home at night. She would climb up the stairs and walk right into our apartment. The neighbors didn't like having a stray puppy in the building. And honestly, was she even safe there? After someone sent her across the railroad and almost got her killed? We decided that it was for the best that we leave her somewhere in her natural environment. We all said our goodbyes then my father took her away. That day my mum and I hugged each other as we both cried.
Tumblr media
I'm so sorry Kalu, I couldn't be by your side, I'm sorry I couldn't protect you. And I'm so sorry to Bhulu for not being able to find you and bring you back home. I'll always love you.

INUKAG Fanfic Rec List - SFW
Tumblr media
Over the last few years, I’ve suffered from on again/ off again insomnia, where some nights I go to bed, don’t sleep at all, and then get up again – rinse and repeat. Rather than spending all night looking at the ceiling and pondering my place in the universe, I pass the time by reading fanfiction. A LOT of fanfiction. And now you, dear reader, get to reap the benefits.
All these fics are T Rated and under by the writer. Also, I’ve only included COMPLETED fics, so there will be some missing from this list that I would absolutely recommend. I have a huge ass list of uncompleted favourites also, but I understand that not everyone likes losing their heart to a fic only to find out that it was last updated in 2005. Log onto fanfiction.net and go through the fics I’m ‘following’ if you want to see those - I’m bearpluscat on there too.
I don’t claim this to be an exhaustive list, or the best of the best; it’s not even all of my favourites. This is just a list of fics that I have really enjoyed and would happily read again, and thought others might enjoy too. There’s probably some that I’ve forgotten, in fact I’m sure there are, so please don’t be upset if you’ve written an Inuyasha fic and I haven’t put it on here!
I’ll also post a list of NSFW fic recs (which is a lot longer - does that infer something about me, or the Inuyasha fandom in general?)

Bangtan fics that I’ve read and liked (will get updated)
uhh, so the thing is that a lot of jikook fics will be in here, as it is my otp. But I have  also put in many others. Thank you!!! (this goes in descending order, so newer ones will come on top, and i still have a lot of older fics, they’ll come at the bottom) (all fic titles in italics are my ult favs and all ships in bold have their plot and are not just implied)
On Patrol  and  On Patrol - Season 2 : jikook, yoonseok, namjin, police au, LOVE this series, check it out!
summary: Officer Jeon has his eyes on Mr. Adorable.Officer Min has a strange neighbor he can't seem to keep out of his life.Captain Kim finds comfort in his son's homeroom teacher. Well, cops need some loving too, right?
A Gilded World : i cannot believe this fic aint down there, yoonjin, must read, chaebol au (i love them), ULT FAV, kdrama au, with vmin who has a tiny storyline too, and side namseok, rated E, 169k words, bros jinkook, READ IT, the fic that got me interested in yoonjin.
summary: Jeon Seokjin has exactly four weeks to stop the impending engagement of his younger brother, doomed to a loveless marriage. The only way to stop it is to make a better match, more advantageous, more lucrative for the Jeon family. It's impossible. It's his only option.Min Yoongi does not want, will never want, will never ever even consider, marriage. It's not in the cards. He's stubborn enough to achieve the total ban on marriage talks. Except maybe his grandmother is a little more stubborn than he is, and maybe she's determined to see him march down the aisle. The chaebol arranged marriage au that exactly one and a half people asked for.
baby, love me hard and hold me tight : jikook, ceo kook, tsundere-yet-not-so-tsundere min, lots of smut, dancer jimin. summary’s too long.
all the light we cannot see : yoonkook, spaceship au, tsundere yoongi, wow i read a lot of those, rated E, 109k words.
summary (part of it):  (when jeongguk finally gets his chance to sail the cosmos, it’s onboard the ship of an aggravating man named min yoongi. he thinks it’ll be extraordinarily dull—but the universe, and the legend of treasure planet, have other plans.)
note: another not so common yet not completely rare pair, i honestly love this fic so much.
nobody's like you  : jikook, college au, pissed jimin, dense kook, a cute fic, rated T, 20k words.
summary: if you have a crush but you don't know you have a crush, is it really a crush? and other great philosophical debates with jeon jeongguk.
or, jeongguk kinda fucks up and jimin can only take so much.
흰 여름 ('White Summer') : yoonmin, non-au, lil angst, rated T, 24k words.

summary: Taehyung had always dreaded meeting his soulmate, unlike the rest of the world’s population. He always hid the words scrawled in black cursive on the inside of his right wrist and felt terror at the thought of them turning blue, of his soulmate speaking them.
And as he sprinted down the packed Seoul sidewalk, hot tears streaming down his cheeks and sobs choking his throat, he knew he'd been right.
Or was he?
sick boy : vmin, LOTS of homophobia, fluff and angst, dystopian korea, its a really good fic, rated M, 8k words, side namkook and yoonseok.

a dose of salt : jikook, I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS FIC, with a lot of taejin, doctors au, enemies to lovers, pls check it, its great, rated E, 145k words, ongoing, almost finished.

He’s also the son of the hospital’s Chairman. But nobody needs to know that since he’s worked for and earned everything he’s accomplished on his own without the help of nepotism.Everyone loves him.
Everyone but Jeon Jungkook, the hot new military trauma surgeon straight out of the army. The decorated veteran is brilliant and quick witted, but has a hot temper and absolutely zero tolerance for bullshit.

The Boy in the Music Box : yoonmin, mystical au i guess?, college au, rated T, 52k words.
summary: Yoongi doesn’t really expect anything special when he finds an old music box in his grandmother’s attic and she tells him to keep it. Oh sure, he expects the music box to be a pretty decoration to add to the stale interior of his small apartment. He expects it to play a tune and he might even dare to expect the barely-functioning little ballerina to dance along to the soft chimes, but that's it, really. The last thing he expects is for the little ballerina to take human form at night and throw his life out of balance with radiant smiles, soft giggles, and a heart-wrenching story.

Doing anything means, apparently, studying BL manga.
My Cup of Tea : cute and short, minjoon, 6k words, high school fic, milk tea (lol) fic.
