A book asks the reader to imagine any sensory input of the story, whereas a film or TV show provides both sound and visuals. Audio fiction lives in the space between these two approaches. I think there's a unique power to that middle ground. I love how audio drama asks the listener to co-construct their sensory experience of the story.

Audio drama allows me to simultaneously experience 'This character feels real to me because I've heard their voice' and 'This character feels real to me because I've pictured them myself'.

What the characters are experiencing is both directly presented to me and left to my imagination. There's no page or screen between me and the story. It's there in my ears. It's there in my mind's eye.

There's a strange sense of intimacy to that, the intimacy of feeling like a fly on the wall during a conversation or of hearing a character speaking as if directly to me. Perhaps it sounds contradictory to say that experiencing a story only through sound allows me to feel uniquely connected to that story, but that's one of the reasons why I love audio fiction so much.

#I am conscious that this is very much the perspective of a sighted and hearing person #and I hope that doesn't come across weirdly #I'm just trying to articulate how I feel about it #This is no shade to books/films/TV btw #They are also excellent mediums with their own strengths #Honestly the main reason why podcasts are my primary form of media consumption #is probs that I'm bad at setting aside time to read/watch things #rather than necessarily because of the specific power of audio fiction #but the particular magic of audio fiction is a nice bonus #I don't really buy into the idea that reading is 'active' while watching video is inherently 'passive' #but under that way of thinking audio fiction is kind of between passive and active in an interesting way #podcasts #audio drama #audio fiction #the empty man posteth #I'd be interested to know if this resonates with anyone else or if it's just me #Also another element to this which makes it weirder is that I have a pretty weak visual imagination #so when I say 'mind's eye' that tends to mean vague concepts for me rather than actual images #but it still helps me feel connected to the story in a unique way. thinking about the identity crisis i went though as a kid cuz my parents had told me very simply that my mom was pashtun and my dad was punjabi and they were both from peshawar and that was that. understandably they had simplified it so much for me cuz i was a kid, but whenever other brown people asked where i was from or "what are you" and i mentioned punjabi and they'd be like oh wow where? lahore? and i'd just be like nope lol peshawar and they would press me about how my dad could be punjabi if he was from peshawar and i just didn't have an answer. when i got a little older, i started saying well borders are manmade, you don't necessarily have to be from one ethnicity cuz you're from a certain area (and i was right! i just didn't know at the time why i was right).

as i got older and i found out more about our family background, it all made more sense to me as i came to know that the punjabi side of us was allegedly from a great-great-great grandfather from gurdaspur who had moved to bannu way back when. but as my interest in linguistics and anthropology and history grew, i realized that my old explanation of "borders are manmade" was true anyway!!! prime examples being speakers of Hindko and Derawali, as well as the Hazarewal community in general. anyways, i could go on about this, but it's all just so endlessly fascinating that i wouldn't know where to stop so i'll stop now.

#also thinking about the fact that my dads family speaks derawali / seraiki and i keep wondering how his family managed to maintain such a #strong punjabi identity despite being only a fraction punjabi 'by blood' and living in kpk for generations #their ancestral home is in bannu and they have no ties to gurdaspur anymore as far as i know #and we have more recent kashmiri and tibetan ancestors but that gets completely overlooked (that could prob be for patriarchal reasons too #since i rmr my dad once saying 'you are what your dad is' which is so stupid and makes no sense. made me roll my eyes so hard) #but anyways im wondering if any of his great-grandparents or whoever were originally from bannu/surrounding areas and thats why they kept #the language OH BUT IM ALSO REMEMBERING NOW my grandma grew up in gujarat (present day pakistan) and also both my grandparents lived in #qadian in india for quite some time in their youth bc they were ahmadi #wondering how many of my other ancestors lived in qadian as well since they all very strongly identify as ahmadi #qadian is in punjab so maybe they married people there as well!!! #anyways just... so many unanswered questions!

so i'm writing an 8th year fic and h&d are taking a muggle studies class together in which they read one of shakespeare's plays, and i'm trying to write a final project (for which they are partners) but like. hogwarts academics don't seem all that uhhhhh rigorous to me (like we see the students complaining about having to write a foot of parchment which is essentially ONE PAGE HANDWRITTEN) and i'm a little worried that my assignment is too rigorous.

it involves a lot of like. thinking analytically and using your imagination wrt the motivations of people unlike yourself, and that's not rlly something they do much at hogwarts as far as i can see. BUT it is muggle studies, and like. they could definitely all use some practice at those skills, following the recent implosion of their society.

#i showed it to my spouse who is a hs teacher #'where are they getting the books for this research? are there wizarding books about macbeth?' no there are not #the professor chose macbeth bc it has these concepts that will be familiar to them like witchcraft and prophesy #but presented from a muggle perspective #and also bc shakespeare is foundational to english literature and culture and it's good to be familiar with his work #and also bc they don't have a lot of experience with art esp language arts which is so so so sad and this will broaden their world #and ALSO bc shakespeare wrote before the statute of secrecy was signed which hopefully sparks their imaginations #to what extent might shakespeare's work have been impacted by ambient magic? or rumors of magic? #and if they had like a regular english literature education #they could talk about like the role of outcasts in shakespeare's work and whether magical people fit into that role #but they do not so we have to be a bit more literal #for the students that are prepared to like dig into this stuff it could be a very engaging experience #but most of them will prob be a bit lazy with it right? and maybe just resent the assignment and not get much out of it #and like!!!! #this assignment is literally just an excuse to have H&D putting their heads together in the library #and bring their relationship/the fact that they've been warming up to each other and spending time together out into the open #in a plausible deniability sort of way #a friendship soft launch if you will #i get a little carried away about these details sometimes #like if i mention the characters getting sandwiches i will look up menus for places they could plausibly have gotten sandwiches in that are #to make sure the sandwiches i mention are reasonable sandwiches #i heard some dumb story about meghan markle freaking out about not being able to get avocado when she was in the uk #and i remembered a fic i had written where aziraphale and crowley eat egg and avocado sandwiches #and i felt ashamed #an implausible sandwich!!!!
