i think one of my favorite things about chuuya is that he will beat someone up as dressed no preparation needed the gloves are just a formality for the level of whoop ass you’re about to receive and i say this because in a few things ive watched lately theres a well dressed character that prepares themself before participating in violence whether thats folding up their sleeves, taking off loose things like glasses and a tie, just something that visually differentiates their street wear state to a wrinkle ready fighting state

in going through the shit ton of re-blogs in my drafts i found an interesting analysis on dazai's ability and depth of contact, specifically in clothing barriers. while they reached the ultimate conclusion that bsd is full of contradictions beyond our understanding (an unfortunate truth), there remains a lot to consider.

the main examples used to highlight these contradictions are his interaction with the numbers kid, kyoka grabbing his jacket when abducting him, and the chuuya-rope fail safe during the final fight in fifteen.

the easiest one to explain is the numbers kid. in explaining his ability the post referenced both the nullification on the abilities affect to him and others. q's doll is the prime example--it isn't by touching q himself but by interacting with the root of his ability, the doll, that his nullification on the ability and its impact takes effect. likewise, though kunikida had a number on him after interacting with the numbers kid, once dazai nullified the abilities ability to affect him it successfully nullified the ability to affect others as well. dazai, in that instance, wasn't necessarily nullifying the ability on physical touch but on interactive touch; once kunikida stepped into the circle he was marked and therefore it was supposed to do the same to dazai, but because dazai cannot be marked on account of his ability he nullified the ability by his inability to interact with it. 

kyoka's abduction then makes a lot of sense. she grabs the fabric of his coat and activates her ability (per predetermined instructions). until demon snow actively attempts to hurt dazai, there is no reason for her to be nullified as there was no real contact made between them for this to happen. none of us can actually say any more on this because this is where the scene always cuts anime and manga and all.

so what the fuck was with the rope in fifteen?

i've tried to wrap my head around it forever but eventually i gave up like i have on most of the bsd mysteries. in tying chuuya to the rope with dazai holding onto it the idea is that chuuya cannot be subsumed by rimbaud's subspaces because it would then attempt to subsume an object that is tied to dazai effectively nullifying both the creation of a new space and the existing subspace. 

but chuuya is tied to that string and somehow keeps using his ability throughout the fight. meanwhile, there are many instances where rimbaud and dazai interact on account of his ability, and therefore there are many instances where it appears dazai is still interacting with rimbaud’s ability despite his supposedly being to nullify it.

so again, i ask you, what the fuck?

it makes sense this was one of the larger changes in the anime adaption. love to see boys holding hands, young multi level marketing besties, but what does this say to the original workaround? it really is tough to visualize despite being an end-of-battle accomplishment. i genuinely wonder what actually happened in the real light novel considering i've only read a fan translation to this point that was predominately summary over quotes. whether or not that will make things make sense... that remains to be determined.

ultimately i think the focus on physical touch still stands, but it's good to elaborate it as "physical interaction" as well. for more combat based abilities look at when dazai nullifies rashomon--which is only when it tries to attack him, which it cannot. likewise with atsushi's tiger form it's exactly this form that disappears on contact because this is the form that provides him with his accompanying abilities. he even always ends up knocked out after this because of the lack of healing abilities that basically serve as surge of adrenaline.

personally, this dependence on physical interaction stopping an abilities physical form has been how i interpreted his ability, even without considering this level of analysis. it’s why the fear of his ability over the fear of his intellect is my favorite thing to play with in characterizing "dazai paranoia” in characters, especially those who find they rely on their abilities for any reason.

as abilities in the bsd verse become more complicated i look forward to seeing how dazai's ability evolves with it. what limitations will asagiri introduce, like q's doll that involve another step of search while exponentially afflicting others? what visualizations will we get other than a blinding blur? as a character who holds all the cards with an overpowering ability with nothing to actually show for it, it's amazing dazai is a character that captures our attention this much when he exists in a limbo of basic obscurity.

To be fair, from what I understand, Dazai can’t even die without there being serious repercussions for the entirety of Yokohama’s power structure.

Dazai dies > The ADA loses an essential unit > Chuuya can no longer be contained > Chuuya is put down after leveling a decent amount of Yokohama > Port Mafia loses a core asset > Yokohama’s government starts to lose their grip on certain things > imminent collapse

There’s probably things I’m missing (like the Hunting Dogs and stuff like that), but I definitely understand what you mean about Dazai’s personal character. Oda’s death was more of a confirmation of his approach to life than anything else anyway.
