Saturday 8 July 2023
Here Nepeta × faassenii 'Purrsian Blue' (catmint) has been used as a low hedge around a section of the productive garden. This compact perennial reaches 45cm in height with grey aromatic leaves and upright blue flower spikes. This plant is popular with pollinators and cats!

The #bigprune is on @ligayagarden! I usually prune at this time of the year but with food shortages and price hikes looking to be one of the continuing blessings of late stage capitalism, and the fact that I dont have any confidence in us meeting the IPCC recommendations for reducing the greenhouse has emissions, I'm pruning with the focus on food production. In the past, we've let the fruit trees grow unharvestably tall in order to shade the house but now that we have a handle on growing food and shelter producing vines closer to the house, we can reduce the tree's size a little. It'll take away a little from the super dense lushness that you've seen on the @adelaideediblegardentrail video and our stint on @gardeningaustralia but I reckon we'll still be in the running for Gawler South's densest garden. Today, I did what I call a crown prune. That means I cut down all of the thin, really tall stuff so that it doesn't fall on me when I get stuck into the bigger branches with my chainsaw. I'll have a rest tomorrow and then get the heavy work done. I've had to leave some branches though, so we get something from the trees that fruit on second year wood. If I don't do that, we'll have a year with a gap in the harvest. It'll be pruned next year when this year's growth becomes second year wood. You know that I like to make my life easy so instead of adding biochar and coffee grounds to the garden separately, when I mulch up all the pruning, I periodically drop handfuls into the mulcher so that they get spread into the mulch. It saves work and mess crushing the biochar too. This year's biochar came from Kim at @portadelaidefoodgardening. I got 30 litres of it to save me from making and activating my own. That's a messy job but I'm learning to weld this year and have a design idea for a compact, home garden size biochar kiln. Anyway, I'm buggered...time for a cuppa. _______________________________________________ #growitlocal #saurbanfood #permaculturesouthaustralia #urbanfarming #growyorownfood #pruning #frontyardfarm #productivegarden (at Gawler, South Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfTSF_fvwJP/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Oof. Today’s #garden pic is the ongoing #autumn cleanup; we pulled out the tomatoes and the more pernicious bits of cucumber, and this enormous pile was the result. Next weekend, the cucumber comes out entirely, and we have a massive pickling day. As a reward though, we found that the daffodils have come up, and the last of the raspberries were clinging on the bushes. . . . #harvest #growyourown #plantsmakepeoplehappy #urbangarden #productivegarden https://www.instagram.com/p/Bvpq5jSFrpy/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ssbfwt20pl1u

I think these zucchinis may qualify as #lethalweapons. The end of Jay’s wedding vows promised us a lifetime full of zucchini (long story) and life has not disappointed in that regard. . . . #zucchini #deadlyweapons #productivegarden #growyourown #growyourownfood #assaultwithavegetable #sendzuchinnirecipes (at Casa de Mama Cass) https://www.instagram.com/p/BnXM4xWAUu2/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=15ymbit4qe3kc

We designed and built this garden one year ago. As you can see the customers have got stuck into making it very productive. They also ran a biochar test bed and the results are clear that the soil with added biochar cropped fuller and lusher. #productivegarden #vegetablegarden #fruitandveg #raisedbeds #sustainabletimber #sustainability #environment #biochar #gardendesign #gardenlandscaping #biodiversity (at Shanklin) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bypeu7zgWfr/?igshid=1xi7aoxjepbjk

This wide range of Cynara scolymus (globe artichoke) forms were grown from seed and show how variable they can be. The edible flower buds, produced over the summer months, can differ in shape and colour. This edible, perennial plant is highly ornamental, with big, jagged, silvery leaves and tall flower stems topped with large globe-shaped buds that have purple flowers like giant thistles.

A young fan trained Malus domestica 'Scrumptious' (apple) is being grown in this courtyard in northern Scotland. This cultivar is a self-fertile, dessert apple. The flowers are pale pink with the red fruit having a fragrant, honeyed flavour. The parents of this cultivar were Malus ‘Starkspur Golden Delicious’ x Malus ‘Discovery’.

In this lovely productive garden by the sea the annual Pisum sativum (garden pea) are producing a good crop. Peas are such a tolerant crop there are several types with those for shelling, as well as mangetout and sugarsnap. Good looking enough to plant in an ornamental border Brassica oleracea (Acephala Group) 'Redbor’ (kale, borecole) has vivid burgundy-coloured, crinkled leaves with colour that intensifies to deep purple with cold. This vegetable is useful for the winter productive garden, coping with frosts and continuing to produce its delicious young leaves right through the coldest months. Here it was thriving in the garden of the restaurant 59 degrees North, Sandy, Orkney.

Here a number of Pyrus communis 'Beurre Hardy' (pear) have been trained as espaliers on a tunnel framework. This is a popular French dessert pear dating back to the early 19th century. The fruit has a melting texture and is said to have the fragrance of rose-water perfume.

These winter hardy cultivars of Brassica oleracea (cabbage) show the value of this plant as a year round food supply. For winter cabbages the seeds are sown in April/May and are transplanted in late June/July to the final growing site. Here winter hardy cabbages are ready for harvest and thriving in a vegetable garden in Orkney, Scotland.

This impressive espalier was a trained Malus domestica 'James Grieve' (apple). This tree must look beautiful in the spring covered with pale pink flowers and in the autumn when there will be yellow fruit blushed with bright.

The horticultural enterprise Transition Turriefield has been experimenting with growing edibles in Shetland’s wild and windy climate since 2008. They have lots of experience about creating growing conditions that allow the sustainable, organic production of vegetables and fruit in challenging conditions. In the tunnels the Cucurbita pepo (courgette) cultivars were cropping well. Thanks to Penny and Alan for a fascinating visit.
