Ground control to Major Tom. Scene at the Mercury Control Center at Cape Canaveral in Oct 1962 during the Mercury Atlas 8 Mission. This spaceflight by astronauts Wally Schirra orbited Earth 6 times & lasted 9 hours. All Project Mercury flights and Gemini 1-3 missions were monitored here. Mission Control moved to Houston from Gemini IV onwards.

Artemis is a great name for a lunar exploration program, so why the hell did we call the first one Apollo? Artemis is the goddess of the Moon! Apollo is her twin, sure, but he's the exact opposite, the god of the sun! It would be like naming a Mars mission Aphrodite instead of Ares because Aphrodite is Ares' lover, even though Aphrodite is clearly a name for a Venus program.
Mercury made sense because it was the first American spaceflight program and Mercury is the first planet from the sun, but it was also symbolic for carrying humanity's message to space.
Gemini made sense because the spacecraft was designed for two people, and Gemini represents the twins Castor and Pollux.
Apollo is just back-assward. It doesn't make sense.

Early days of the space race with the launch of the Little Joe II, Aug 1963. The rocket was used 5x for uncrewed tests of the launch escape system of Apollo spacecraft between 1963-66. At 86 feet in height, it was the smallest of the 4 launch rockets during the Apollo era.

On this day in history, April 3rd, 1926, astronaut Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom was born. One of the original Mercury 7 astronauts, and the shortest at 5'7", Grissom was the second American in space, flying the second Mercury flight and the final suborbital. His ship, Liberty Bell 7, nearly took his life when it sank into the ocean when the hatch prematurely blew off.

After Liberty Bell 7, Grissom dedicated himself to proving his capability as an astronaut and a test pilot. He flew the first manned Gemini flight, Gemini III, alongside John Young, and afterwards dedicated his efforts to improving the Gemini capsule. His impact on Gemini was so great that some even called the spacecraft "the Gusmobile."
Tumblr media
His work on Gemini motivated NASA to select him as the commander for the first manned Apollo mission, Apollo 1. Tragically, on January 27th, 1967, he and his crew of Ed White and Roger Chaffee were killed in a fire on the launch pad during a rehearsal for the launch, likely caused by faulty wiring within the capsule igniting the pure oxygen atmosphere.

Grissom was a down-to-earth astronaut, sometimes being known as "stone-faced Gus" due to his somewhat stoic personality in interviews. But Gus was far more than that to the people who knew him. His dry sense of humor and engineer's eye for detail made him a crucial member of the original astronaut team. He was close friends with the other Mercury astronauts, and acted as a friend and mentor to the new classes.
He was also notorious for his antics while driving, once blowing out the tires of his car after hitting a bump too fast and catching air, and on another occasion, with his friend a racecar driver at the wheel, speeding through a turn at 90mph and ending up 200 feet off the road in a field. Good one, Gus.
Though his career was tragically cut short, Grissom left an indelible impact on the space program and US manned space exploration as a whole.
