The Black Wolf Capers always imply the existence of the supernatural even if not as aggressively and throughly as They Walk Among Us did.
Why is this important?
cause all of my carmens unless the AU specifies otherwise are Ashwalkers.
Essentially: she was born as Isabel Wolfe but due to Shennigans (one of my stories will get into the actual story of what happened back then), she was around a deeply distressed and unbound Kitu during the fire. Little Isabel died of smoke inhalation, but because she was engulfed in Kitu's 'radiance,' her soul went through a radical shift.
Ashwalkers cannot permanently die unless you extinguish the ever-burning hearth resting in their chests; it's pretty much a woven core of magical fire containing their soul and if you manage to preserve a lit twig and place it in a non-magical fireplace, they can be continuously reborn
Carmen has absolutely Zero Knowledge of this and Kitu is awkwardly waiting for the right moment to tell her friend that, like herself, she is functionally immortal to violent death. Though if they do die, reforming takes a lot of energy and depending on how they died, their memories can be a bit scrambled or faint
tldr; I can do a lot of chaos of BWC!Carmen

Reading a few books of Guardians of Ga'Hoole and the first two books in Wolves of the Beyond has made me further consider the idea that humans did exist in the world of strelles at one point but have long since perished/vanished and left nothing but some particularly resilient ruins behind.
That would make me creating a map for them a hell of a lot easier

I never really got into any Vetinari ship bc like... he always seems like he has too much else to do, idk. But I think if there was Vetinari/Morporkia i could get really into that. Like, that is the love of his life. He's killed for her, he put himself in harm's way for her, he carried a lilac blossom in his mouth for her, he dedicated his entire life to her. Yes, the "Stinkytown is sentient" post inspired this

One of my favorite Discworld books is actually one of the more obscure ones, "Moving Pictures", which is about the invention of films and the movie business in this fantasy world that has dwarves and trolls and wizards and so on. It has its rough patches like every early Discworld book, but Ginger's speech about people who were born in the wrong time or wrong place for their dreams really gets to me in a good way, and I love all of the references to classic films and commentary on fame and creativity. It also has classic characters like Gaspode the Talking Dog and C.M.O.T. Dibbler, and it introduces Detritus's romance with another troll named Ruby.
Perhaps most importantly to me is that this book introduces Ponder Stibbons, who is a wizard, and who goes on in later books to be one of the most important members of the Unseen University (he holds like twelve different positions), in that he's one of the few people who can competently manage a project and so ends up managing nearly everything. (Bear with me, it's been a while since I read any Discworld and my memory is a little rough.) In "Moving Pictures", Ponder is the classmate (roommate?) of a fellow named Victor Tugelbend, who is one of the main characters.
Victor begins the book as a career student, in that a wealthy relative left him a great deal of money exclusively for school; so as long as he STAYS in school, all of his living expenses are paid for. If Victor graduates, that's the end of the money. If Victor drops out, that's the end of the money. But if Victor manages to hit a specific mark range in the 80s every year, then he gets to stay on for another year and try again, and so Victor is perhaps the most dedicated and knowledgeable wizardry student in the university's history, because you have to know what the right answer is in order to intentionally get a certain number of the questions wrong, so that you can continue to coast along on your college fund.
Ponder's graduation is (accidentally) Victor's fault, because Victor runs away to get into the movie business. (I won't spoil what happens, but it's VERY funny.) Now, I like to imagine after the events of the book, after Ponder holds a faculty position in the university, Victor comes BACK to the university occasionally as a disgustingly well-paid external consultant, which drives Ponder UP THE FUCKING WALL. Like, people are so stingy all of the time but SOMEHOW the university budget has room to bring your offensively handsome dropout roommate back just to say, "Hmm, yes, that looks bad. Have you tried turning it off and on again?" I'd throw a fit, honestly. (As soon as Ponder has enough seniority, he probably puts his foot down to stop this if Victor isn't actually useful. Maybe he is, idk, but maybe not for THAT consulting fee.)
I also like to imagine that Victor Tugelbend and Theda "Ginger" Withel are still together, maybe even still acting (badly? mediocre-ly? decently?) together, in some dingy little theatre (Ginger is the director and runs their acting troupe like a tyrant) where the front seats are regularly filled with middle-aged folks who still sigh over the memories of moving pictures. (Moving pictures are now, presumably, VERY illegal in Ankh Morpork.) Victor and Ginger have only because even more attractive as they've gotten older, which is EVEN MORE OFFENSIVE to poor Ponder because his former movie star former roommate is married to another gorgeous former movie star?! I'd throw another fit.
Anyway, I think Ponder deserves to have an affair with a pair of aging former movie stars. I like to imagine this purely because I think it's funny. He seems kind of busy for marriage, so joining someone else's marriage part-time might be good for him. It probably makes most of the rest of the Unseen University faculty breathlessly envious and that really does it for him.
And I think that this affair would OF COURSE be covered by every newspaper and tabloid in the city, including The Times, and William de Worde and Sacharissa Cripslock don't fully understand why their entertainment reporter is so breathlessly excited about people who were famous over a decade ago? (Supermarket tabloids love to tell me about alleged affairs of people who were famous 20+ years ago.) The article on Victor Maraschino and Delores De Syn's failing marriage* is their bestselling newspaper in months and William puts his head down on his desk in despair. (He's fine. This happens on a weekly at least basis. He just needs a minute.)
*Victor and Ginger are very happy with this situation, actually. They're going to take Ponder to dinner to go on a double date with Ruby and Detritus soon. Victor and Ponder are going to get distracted arguing about some of the Inadvisably Applied Magic research projects, but that's fine, because Ginger wants to talk to Ruby about this one-troll-woman-show concept. (Detritus will proudly hand out tickets at the Watch station and accidentally intimidate all of his coworkers into accepting the invitation.)

Reread Unseen Academicals recently and I've been thinking about that scene towards the end between Nutt and Ladyship and Vetinari. More after the break because there are spoilers.
So, Nutt's an orc. Everyone knows that orcs are savage beasts that tear people's heads off, and Margolotta is desperately trying to make sure he comes up "civilized". Thematically, there's links to the Uberwald League of Temperance, which was at least partially her project, since Margolotta's taking a non-human race famous among humans for being evil, dangerous, and generally bad news and trying to reform it. Her instruction for Nutt to "teach [the remaining wild orcs] civilized behavior" follows naturally from her attempts to do the same with vampires.
And then Nutt fires back with, "And who would you send to teach the humans?"
He earns a "brief outburst of laughter" from Vetinari, which is usually reserved for Vimes. There's no mention of Margolotta's direct reaction, but for the last few lines she's been described as "taken aback" and "[saying something] coldly", so she can't be too amused by this comment. But why is she so unimpressed with Nutt's asides about humans?
It's because, for all she tried, his situation isn't actually like the Black Ribboner vampires. In that case, Margolotta more or less succeeded in making her the vampires into reasonable facsimiles of humans, although with a few weird habits. In the quest for acceptance, Margolotta believed it necessary to emulate humans, to redirect entirely the thirst for blood and control into other passions. But Nutt? He's been raised to be a human orc, to be part of the civilized world, and how does he find true acceptance and happiness?
By accepting himself not as human, but as an orc.
Nutt's comment about "teach[ing] the humans" isn't just a funny aside about human nature. Deliberate or not, it's a slap in the face to everything Margolotta's worked for since at least The Fifth Elephant. For her, humanity is a goal to aspire to; for Nutt, who's lived among the people of Ankh-Morpork and seen their moods, their mobs, their stupidity and even their kindness, humanity is an amusement.
Thank you for taking the time to read my rambling thoughts, and good night.

Most of the overstuffed chairs in the library were occupied by contented lunchers dozing happily under tented copies of the Ankh-Morpork Times. Susan looked around until she found the copy from which projected the bottom half of a black robe and two bony feet. There was also a scythe leaning against the back of the armchair. She raised the paper.
GOOD AFTERNOON, said Death. HAVE YOU HAD LUNCH? IT WAS JAM ROLY- POLY.
'Why do you do this, Grandfather? You know you don't sleep.'
I FIND IT RESTFUL. ARE YOU WELL?
'I was until the rat arrived.'
YOUR CAREER PROGRESSES? YOU KNOW I CARE FOR YOU.
'Thank you,' said Susan shortly. 'Now, why did-
' WOULD A LITTLE SMALL TALK HURT?
Susan sighed. She knew what was behind that, and it wasn't a happy thought. It was a small, sad and wobbly little thought, and it ran: each of them had no one else but the other.
There. It was a thought that sobbed into its own handkerchief, but it was true. Oh, Death had his manservant, Albert, and of course there was the Death of Rats, if you could call that company. And as far as Susan was concerned... Well, she was partly immortal, and that was all there was to it. She could see things that were really there, she could put time on and off like an overcoat. Rules that applied to everyone else, like gravity, applied to her only when she let them. And, however hard you tried, this sort of thing did tend to get in the way of relationships.
It was hard to deal with people when a tiny part of you saw them as a temporary collection of atoms that would not be around in another few decades. And there she met the tiny part of Death that found it hard to deal with people when it thought of them as real.
Not a day went past but she regretted her curious ancestry. And then she'd wonder what it could possibly be like to walk the world unaware at every step of the rocks beneath your feet and the stars overhead, to have a mere five senses, to be almost blind and nearly deaf...
THE CHILDREN ARE WELL? I LIKED THEIR PAINTINGS OF ME.
'Yes. How is Albert?'
HE IS WELL.
... and not really have any small talk, Susan added to herself. There wasn't room for small talk in a big universe.
THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END.
Well, that was big talk.

Tiny Shrine: Anubis
There’s something about spring that makes me get all crafty and I don’t know what that is. Maybe it’s the fact that I can finally get outside to spraypaint / use chemicals. Maybe it’s because the SO is finally going away to the cabin on the weekends and leaving me to my own devices. I don’t know.
So I found this box:
Tumblr media
And it’s got this weird little grate in it?
Tumblr media
I don’t know what it is. A humidor? Potpourri box? Is it for remains? No clue.
But the grate lifts out....
Tumblr media
...and it reminds me of a little confessional.
And I, the perpetual altar-maker says, yes. This should be a tiny shrine. But for whom?
Dude. No brainer. My patron diety, protector of the dead, lover of the living, weigher of hearts and lord of secrets...
Tumblr media
WHO ELSE LOVES ANUBIS LIKE I LOVE ANUBIS?
I’ll put the photos under the cut. This is mostly for @lowlights since I promised her pictures of my tarot shrine and haven’t been able to work on that one (much bigger project). So she gets this for now. But maybe y’all can appreciate a little craftaganza?
We start with the outside. Let’s add his cartouche and his symbol, the ankh. Because even through Anubis is the god of the dead, he also symbolizes eternal life and appreciating all the beauty of the current one.
Tumblr media
And on the other side, let’s add the man of the hour himself.
Tumblr media
Hot.
Okay. I was going to do the cartouche in gold, but @feathersandfoxtails gave me the inspiration to keep the shrine like a little Egyptian tomb--all business on the outside and let the inside shine.
Like this.
Tumblr media
He’s back there, but the grate gives him a little privacy.
So I learned gold leafing for this project and want to bedeck everything now. The grate was just done in gold paint tho. I kept the good stuff for his room.
Tumblr media
Tada!!! Tiny shrine for a tiny god! There’s a little carpet (thank you, actual woven carpet bookmark) and a couple of scarabs @feathersandfoxtails gave me from Egypt. That little golden pot next to him is a holder for an incense cone...and when I light that sucker up and put the grate on it, it’s gonna spill out like our boy is hot boxing himself in Egyptian musk.
He’s kinda hard to see here, but you have to lookit my wee Anubis. He’s so sweet:
Tumblr media
And now he’s got a home!!!
Tumblr media
I’m just so tickled with how it turned out. I hope he is too.
Thank you for indulging my crafting excitements. I’ve got a whole bunch of other ones to make, so watch this space for more tiny shrines...

Knot of Isis
This ancient egyptian symbol is called Tjet or Knot of Isis and it's a sign usually connected with the power of the goddess Isis/Aset. Isis is one of the main deity of the egyptian pantheon, sister/wife of Osiris, goddess of magic and wisdom, goddess of kingship and protectress of the kingdom. She was seen as a universal mother goddess connected with beauty, love and fertility. In the Book of the Dead the tjet sign was addressed with the words "Blood of Isis" symbolizing the lifegiver power of blood, especially connected with the menstrual blood where the power of the goddess lies.
This sign resembles the ankh, except that the transverse arms are folded downwards, and resembles a knot of cloth and may have originally been a bandage used to absorb menstrual blood. Others suggest it represents the female reproductive organs and represents Isis in her role as the universal mother. Knots were commonly used in ancient egyptian religion as magical amulets and spell crafting. Large knot in a mantle were worn by Egyptian women from the Late Period onward and we tend to see the Knot of Isis tied into clothing during the Greco-Roman period.
The tyet can be compared with the Minoan sacral knot, a symbol of a knot with a projecting loop found in Knossos, Crete and with the Knot of Inanna.
The tjet was usually placed in tombs and was made with red semi-precious stone like jaspers. The blood of Isis was often combined with the djed-pillar especially in the decoration of temple ,walls, beds and sarcophagi. The djed is a pillar-like symbol associated with the god Osiris and it is commonly understood to represent his spine. When combined the two symbols alluded, via Isis and Osiris, to the unity of opposing world forces and with that to the unconquerable nature of life.
The tjet represents the female generative power of the goddess in which the magical source of isis lies and thus represents an ancient and very powerful symbol of protection and power.

Yall Discworld fandom I need you guys to check out this fic right here
It's a Samuel Vimes/Sybil Ramkin/Havelock Vetinari romance story but it's also a murder mystery. The fic manages to mix all these aspects seemingly into a story that has a really close caliber as the guards books (i had to stop reading fifth elephant to focus on the fic, yes, I was mixing both stories)
Here's the summary:
It began with a quiet confession from Lord Vetinari, and Lady Sybil making a decision about what to do with it. Vimes is exhausted, and at once frightened by and drawn to the changes that the two are introducing to his life. But then dwarfs around the city begin to go mad and hallucinate themselves into a violent frenzy, and a brutal murder is committed in the pouring rain. Maybe, just maybe, Vimes can figure it all out before the madness and the rage gets him too.
It's explicit, it's kinky, it's about finding yourself and loving/accepting yourself, but also there are some weird fucking things going around Ankh-Morpork that are unrelated... Until they aren't anymore.
The characters are all So In Character, they are well thought and they have their own depths and motivations, it's beautifully done.
Putting the Commander to Bed should be a must read between Jingo and Fifth Elephant. It's all I'm saying.

Discworld News!
Discworld TTRPG in the works with Modiphius! Exciting news TTRPG fans: an official Discworld game is on the horizon! Read more on the project from Modiphius below: Publisher of tabletop RPGs, wargames and board games, Modiphius Entertainment Ltd. has secured the rights to produce tabletop games for Terry Pratchett’s internationally bestselling Discworld series. After negotiating an agreement with the estate of the late Sir Terry, Modiphius looks to publish tabletop games that honour the humour, satire, and darkly entertaining fantasy series. With this year marking the 40th anniversary of the release of The Colour of Magic, Modiphius intends to publish a tabletop roleplaying game around the city of Ankh-Morpork and the wider Disc, with a Kickstarter for the tabletop roleplaying game planned for late 2024. Modiphius’ roleplaying game will be the first RPG for Discworld since 1998, when Steve Jackson Games published a sourcebook using its GURPS rules. Modiphius has a reputation for creating authentic and immersive licensed tabletop games around global IP’s, having produced award-winning games for Conan™, Star Trek™, John Carter of Mars™, Fallout™, and The Elder Scrolls™. Speaking about the deal, Rob Wilkins said on behalf of the Pratchett Estate, “Terry had a lifelong affection with roleplaying games and it’s an entirely logical path along which you can follow his career from Dungeon Master to him becoming one of our most celebrated and beloved fantasy authors of all time. We are delighted to be partnering with Modiphius. We love their work and we love their ethos and we entirely trust them to get things right.” Modiphius founder and chief creative officer Chris Birch said, “I’m sure many of us have Terry’s unique world in our mind’s eye when we’re roleplaying. Ankh-Morpork has had such a special place in the community and is full of so much character it was a great place to begin our journeys on the Disc.” Modiphius is reaching out to the wider Discworld fanbase to ask for input into the games they will develop with a survey that can be found here.
