Can we just give Emerald Fennell all the money so she can keep creating mind fucking masterpieces ?

I think the thing that makes Bo Burnham's character so great in "Promising Young Woman" is that even though he gives this very affable, awkwardly charming vibe, he *still* pushes things right to the limit before pulling back.
He does the persistent asking out, but then caveats with "you can leave any time, we'll have a safeword", he "accidentally" walks them to his apartment and invites her in, before he says "sorry that was inappropriate." It speaks to the very insidious nature of toxic masculinity which almost telegraphs the reveal later on, in that ultimately his main concern is outward perception. He ultimately is still in contact with Al and Co "they're not that bad", just at a healthy distance for outward appearances.
It also works with the casting, in that most of us know Bo Burnham as a largrly progressive comic so his reveal as being tacitly complicit in his silence over Al's actions feels like a rugpull, but underlines the notion that you can't trust someone's outward personality to reflect their innermost thoughts and values.

when you watch promising young woman for the first time and see the ending, and as a woman your BRAIN SCREAMS, 'why do woman have to die to get justice?????'
and then you take deep breaths and realise.... that's the point...that women HAVE to die get justice. they won't believe you until you are fucking dead in a ditch and they have no choice but to believe you.
the ending this cold harsh reminder that oh, you thought this was a feminist revenge fantasy, where everything will work out.
well, here's the cold harsh truth. that the man you might love will be complicit in your worst nightmare. and he will show no remorse unless his career is at stake.
that the men will KILL you and burn your body and enjoy their weddings and escape because they CAN. because the world is built to protect them.
you thought this movie will find escapism here, that oh I Can Win.
well, no. no you can't. they won't let you.
