People are sleeping on Promortyus. The lighting, colors and animation are fantastic. That color scheme sounds ugly in theory (muddy brown, green and orange), but the artists made it work with perfect framing and balance. I also love the little animation details that make the character's gestures so human, like Rick rubbing his forehead while Summer speaks.
But please, Internet, tell me more about how Rick and Morty is just another ugly Western cartoon.

Not to get deep about the facehugger egg-shitting episode but the scene where Rick and Morty think they’re about to die really hits different when you think about Rick losing his Beth at a young age and never getting to say goodbye to her.
Rick: Beth, your son is dying! Say goodbye!
Beth: What are you...
Rick: Say goodbye to your little boy!
Morty: No, look away! I'm making an egg, Mom. I'm making an egg!
Beth: You said you'd keep me more in the loop this year.
Rick: Look away, Beth! Daddy loves you!
Like this is what he wishes he’d had the opportunity to tell his Beth in her last moments, and what he’s choosing to tell this Beth in (what he thinks) are his own last moments

Rick and Morty season 4 episode 7 "Promortyus" Review.
Ah, this episode man....I liked the human parts, and there were jokes I found genuinely funny...but the face-hugger parts are too gross for me to rank it high...I mean again, it was nice to see Rick treating Morty halfway decent, even though the episode after this is "The Vat of Acid Episode" sooo uhhh yeahhhh, fun fact: The first time I watched this episode, I actually stopped watching at the face hugger part, then the next time I watched it, I covered my eyes at the face hugger part and didn't account for the fact THAT THEY HAD THE SAME VOICES AS RICK AND MORTY. But yeah it's crazy how one scene can derail an entire episode, now I'm going to stop talking about this scene, because if we don't talk about the scene, it doesn't exist. So yeahhh not exactly going to rank this episode high surprise surprise.

In hindsight, this quote hits a lot harder considering “Mortyest Morty” isn’t even his Morty. And he’s not the “Rickest Rick”.
Does not include any spoilers for Season 7.
I feel like this quote is slept on a lot because it makes you wonder if he was even aware of the implications of what he said or if he said it knowing Morty wouldn’t understand. I don’t even think he would want to admit it, but he’s not “The Rickest Rick” mainly because he cares. Specifically, he gives a shit about a Morty that isn’t even his.
It’s shown subtlety throughout the show, like in the Season 1 Finale, Ricksy Business, when Rick got teary-eyed over a slide show showing Morty throughout his life. In A Rickle in Time, where Rick is willing to let himself die to save Morty, his last wish is for Morty to grow up better than him. As jaded and backward as he may show it, Rick definitely cares. Rick has had to switch to multiple universes and watch various versions of his family including his original Diana and Beth die throughout the show. Morty was his only constant, though, and he’s grabbed onto that. But for as much as he cares, Rick has a habit of pushing away, which comes into effect in the later seasons. Morty tries to help and relate to Rick to an extend. He constatly extends a branch to Rick, who almost always puts him down.
However, the more Rick pushes away, the more frustrated Morty gets. He starts calling out Rick on his BS and has even cussed him out several times. He’s threatened to stop going with Rick in the early season, but those were practically mute. Rick could easily force him or make him forget he started refusing. Rick only started taking Morty seriously when he began acting out. The more that Rick pushes back, the more the Prime part of Morty comes out, usually at the expense of anyone around him. I think that is the straw that broke the proverbial camel's back and pushed him to leave in Forgetting Sarick Mortshall with the two crows thing. Something that still upsets Morty if someone mentions it in season 7.
It also makes you think that the reason Morty has gotten progressively more aggressive and violent over these past couple of seasons is that the Prime part of him is getting more prominent. For example, in Edge of Tomorty: Rick Die Rickpeat, Morty got so obsessive over a future that he didn't brutally die; he quickly brushed off Ricks's death. It's somewhat out of character for him, though. He also attacked other soldiers and the general populace, just for him to find out it wasn't really worth much. Rick is getting more combative because he sees that part of Prime in Morty, which scares him. The episode Looks Who’s Purging Now was the starting point for his volatile behavior; Rick seems genuinely shocked and somewhat horrified as Morty's anger problems get the better of him, and he lashes out, killing many people even when they are hiding. Rick lied to Morty because he didn’t want him to know what he could do. Near the end of The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy, Morty threatens Ethan with the machine Summer used after he ghosted her and messed with her body issues. In the after credit scene, we see a deformed Ethan stumbling in pain, implying Morty used the machine on him.
In Promortyus, Morty also showed little remorse for killing off all the aliens and went out of his way to cause damage, though he regretted it once he had to come back. A Rickconvenient Mort, Jerry was genuinely disturbed to hear Morty admit he murdered the Tina-Teers. And during the scene, Morty was extremely brutal. Its not the first time Morty has committed some diabolical crimes for someone he's interested in or generally cares about. In the episode Mort Dinner Rick Andre, his violent streak hits its crescendo. Once he got fed up with the Narnia people, he committed mass genocide out of frustration, and by the end, he didn't show much remorse.
I think the most damning evidence is the episode Rickshank Redemption, where during a stand-off, Morty is so fed up with Rick yelling at him during a standoff that he shoots Rick in the head. Not an arm or leg but in the forehead. He absolutely shot to kill. And yeah, you could say it was a spur-of-the-moment action based on frustration and impulse, but I think that was put in the episode not just a funny bit but a glimpse of what Morty is capable of. It was Morty basically saying "If were all going to die, Ive earned the right to be the one to take you out." There’s something symbolical about Morty killing both his best friend and the person that’s hurt him for years.
Its an interesting dichotomy as Rick seems to be mellowing out; Morty is slowly getting more comfortable with violence and generally more confident with himself. Rick is someone who gives off the bravado of a uncaring, cold hearted galactic criminal. However, the truth is Rick is someone who cares deeply for the people he's close to, and gets no enjoyment out of violence. Morty, on the other hand, is someone who tries to be caring, mercy full and forgiving. That being said, deep down he wants to stop having to constantly take the high road and give back all the pain and abuse he gets from others. These personality traits between the two constantly clash and the longer the live together, the more you see their original persona's corrode.
The season six finale, Ricktional Mortpoon's Rickmas Mortcation, adds to this as Rick compares Morty to a “suicide bomber” because he was reckless and says he gets that from Prime. But C-137 is the only constant in Morty's life. He’s been through multiple universes and timelines but has had the same Rick for most of his life. Most of Morty's issues stem from things he had done or witnessed with Rick C-137. For example, the Vat of Acid Episode is what I would consider Rick at his absolute lowest. It's almost the kinda behavoir you would expect Prime to pull. Messing with Morty's head and killing a bunch of other Mortys just to say, "I told you so." Even going as far as gaslighting him by saying he COULD have listened to Rick tell him how it worked, even though Rick probably wouldn't have told him either way. It caused communication between these two to break down. At that point, you can tell Morty doesn't have much trust or faith in him, and when Rick replaces himself with a robot that treats him just a little bit better, Morty immediately notices. He even thought Rick was messing with him and brought up the vat of acid episode. This is another example of how the Ricks action leaves permeate consequences and effects on Morty. Don't get me wrong, Morty is far from perfect and flawed, but so is Rick. They have real emotions and conflict, and it's these factors that separate them from Prime (at least from the glimpses of him that we have seen)
However, Morty does exhibit certain traits unlike what we've been lead to believe is normal "Morty" behavior. In Rickmurai Jack, Morty tries to lie to Rick and even goes as far as to age himself nearly 40 years to get him to come back. Another example is in The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy, Where Morty coaxes Rick into going on an adventure with Jerry to keep him from committing seppuku, though there's a good chance it was just to get a break from adventures. Rick can’t really blame most of Morty's behavior on Prime because any behavior he picks up past season one is from him and him alone. But even then I don’t doubt that there are behavioral similarities between him and Rick Prime. The Prime universe was everyone’s personality amplified.
Rick almost likes to pretend his the top dog, the Rickest Rick but as few others, including Bird Person and the toxic version of himself, has pointed out, he’s not. He’s highly capable but he’s also vulnerable. Season 6 ended with Rick getting Morty more involved in the search for Prime, forcing him to face the truth of Mortys origin. But regardless one thing is for certain, Morty is really the Mortyest Morty in the finite central curve, and that scares C-137.

I know Seasons 3 and 4 are notorious for Rick being at his worst, and considering what he made himself relive in hindsight I totally understand why he was triggered to go back to being an abusive nihilistic brute.
Coupling that with the fact that he abandoned the Prime/Cronenberg Dimension means that ‘Rick Potion #9’ probably serves a double meaning in full context. He was forced to ‘give up’ the hunt for Prime and actually focus on being a person. After that, I suspect that the flashback in ‘The Rickshank Redemption’ was a way of guilting himself. He doesn’t have the Diane AI around anymore, so having that partially fabricated memory was a great way to have his wife come back from the dead to haunt him again.
Tumblr media
All of that without even mentioning that he watched his best friend/unrequited love nearly die in front of him AND witnessed that gut wrenching confrontation between Beth, Jerry, and the kids on Tiny Planet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That being said, boy do a lot of people underestimate the sheer optimism that Season 4 sets up for Rick’s character progression.
I’m definitely not saying that Season 4 doesn’t have its moments of Rick crossing the line. The ending of ‘Rattlestar Ricklactica’ makes me nauseous and ‘The Vat of Acid Episode’ is infamous for the psychological torment he puts Morty through.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the same time, many things in Season 4 make his progression in Seasons 5 and 6 seem gradual and earned. A few that always stick out to me are the ending of ‘Promortyus’ and his arc with the Beths in ‘Star Mort Rickturn of the Jerri.’
Tumblr media
In my opinion, Season 3 was when he was at his worst and Season 4 is him beginning to come out of that weird fog– albeit, still shitty.
I mean, look at the ending of ‘Edge of Tomorty: Rick Die Repeat.’ It’s a dark episode, sure, but coming out of Season 3 Morty deserved a little bit of selfishness. (Probably not the copious amount of homicide he ended up committing, but he was going through a lot, so I let it slide.)
For an episode so dark, you almost think that it’s going to be a pretty bleak opener to the season– but the ending is surprisingly… wholesome?
It’s like a cute/positive spin on the ‘Pilot’ and ‘The Rickshank Redemption’ drunken rant endings. Even when it sours, it still shows Rick and Morty on a united front. They’re excited to work together. Instead of Morty being a victim, he feels more like a partner. They excitedly rant together.
Tumblr media
After the ending of Season 6, the optimism of Season 4 feels so disheartening. The vibes are depressingly different if you directly compare the Season 4 premiere and the Season 6 finale.
Tumblr media
I think Season 4 was a great buildup to Rick's current character. Any other way would have felt too rushed, but it incorporates a perfect (and often understated) amount of Rick being soft.

"Rise of the Numbericons: The Movie" sounds like a wasted episode on paper: it's a ridiculous concept, it's a sequel that nobody asked for, and the two leads are a side character and a one-off cameo. In fact, it wasn't even a cameo. I had no idea that Dan Harmon voiced Ice-T in "Get Schwifty" until today. I thought the writers introduced Ice-T because he wanted to be on the show, but it was just a goofy pun.
But somehow, the writers balanced hip hop, action movies and outrageous antics without going overboard. "Rickdependence Spray" in season five is "going for it" gone wrong--a barely coherent mess that nearly everyone agrees is the worst episode in the show.
Conversely, "Rise of the Numbericons: The Movie" is pure entertainment. The jokes, digs at action movies and running gag that Water-T has no idea who Morty is are hilarious. Water-T's song at the end is actually catchy and the perfect soundtrack to the climax.
The fact that Ice-T voiced himself this time helped, too. Hugh Jackman's role in "How Poopy Got His Poop Back" would've been pointless namedropping if that weren't actually Hugh Jackman.
[Edit: Apparently, Ice-T only voiced Helium-Q? Damn, Dan Harmon nailed that impression.]
And man, everyone really is queer in the Rick and Morty universe! People call Morty the token straight character, but I think he's bi after his weird, unexplained obsession with Bruce Chutback in season five. Wish the series would say it outright, though.
Tumblr media
Evidently, B-plots are a thing of the past. Some B-plots from earlier episodes are classic, but I also like one plot getting a full 20 minutes because it gives the leads more time to develop.
Speaking of leads, one issue I had is that Morty is overshadowed yet again. Rick has dominated seasons six and seven with little time for Morty. Sometimes, Jerry or Summer take his place. And now Morty's overshadowed by...Mr. Goldenfold and Water-T?
You could have edited him out and had virtually the same story. It's obvious that he's only present because people might not watch a Rick and Morty episode without at least half of the duo.
This episode did make me think about Dan Harmon's statement in 2022 that Rick and Morty could go on forever. You can do anything in a show with infinite dimensions to explore. Check in on old characters, develop existing relationships, travel to the craziest planets, make social commentary, see what Water-T's been up to, add another twist to Rick's lore--that one has limits, but a 70-year-old man has a long history.
Still, we've all watched THAT show that dragged on too long, declining so sharply that it almost ruins the classic episodes. People say that Superjail! ended too early, and it's even more lawless than Rick and Morty, but it took the viewer to bizarro land and ended before it went stale. Sometimes, enough is enough.
Rick says in "Promortyus" that he doesn't do sequels. However, after six seasons in total and four seasons that stubbornly refused to give fans what they want (not a bad thing, but fakeouts get old after a while), I think we've earned some follow-ups. It feels like the series is coming full circle as we gear up for the last 32 episodes.
But let's give Morty something to do! He has flaws, but he's the moral heart of the show. Without him, Rick would be a miserable old man in a house full of people trying to out-snark each other.

Some things I noticed about Tricia and Nancy...
Tumblr media
Tricia is seemingly hypersexual and hangs around any group of people that is seemingly popular. At the same time, she's oblivious to her constant sexual discussions and even her own body. She just kinda says what's on her mind and gravitates toward popular groups. It's like some traits of old and new Summer (looking for popularity, cares about sexual appeals and factors - careless, says whatever she wants and doesn't care about the reactions of others when she speaks her mind)
Nancy is pretty meek and kind with some dorky hobbies and talents. She has a genuine heart and moral compass, she's just very insecure and keeps to herself with no way to really get herself out there
It's pretty crazy Summer is friends with them, too. Summer kinda puts up with Tricia as we saw in "Promortyus", it should NOT be so common and predictable that Tricia wants to fuck Jerry and Summer is just like "Oh brother here we go again". Meanwhile, she had 0 regard for Nancy when she was first shown, and even though Tricia criticized her, she still let her in her room at all, and we see Summer and Nancy texting in "The Rickshank Rickdemption"
Maybe this is Summer grasping for straws when it comes to friends, or maybe ahe relates because she can see herself in them or their personalities are similar enough. She seems to tolerate Tricia and made up with Nancy, so good on her then
Also ngl Summer x Nancy would be so fucking cute
