(XIV||20)27. Alluring. (Free Prompt)

As easy as it was for her to talk anyone’s ear off, at any time, for any reason, she still hadn’t told him yet.

After Anne-Sophie and Oberic had their spat in the Crystarium, she had kept tabs on him. It was not terribly hard to do, even in a city that diverse: a Hume six-and-a-half fulms tall wearing antique armor with a dialect to match, offering to lead expeditions throughout Lakeland and Il Mheg made him stand out plenty. Besides---as she’d remind him later once they had made peace---she’d found him from a few stray tales and a magicked mirror back in Eorzea, so tracking him within the same realm was child’s play in comparison.

Still, once the knight-scholar had returned to the Bookman’s Shelves ahead of her quarry, she took a few days to explore. Many mysteries had been calling to her from the old manuscripts about the fallen kingdom of Voeburt, alluring in their vagueness that plagued contemporary writing in any world, in any time. Small hamlets were mentioned in passing, as if the reader would obviously know that the best lettuce came from Sud-am-Mein (why?), whereas one should take pains to avoid the cobbler’s shop in Hinterburg (again, why? Whom had they wronged?!). Though this was a problem the erudite Hyuran woman was long-familiar with, it was even more irritating when she had no frame of reference, no lodestar by which to orient her mental compass in order to make educated guesses about any of these now-drowned or levelled villages.

There was one place that the new documents referred to---the ones left by “the elf man in the long dress”, as Nee Ys not-so-helpfully had called him---called Wolekdorf, that evidently was still somewhat intact. Early one morning after her swim in the lake and exercises in the clearing behind the Bookman’s Shelves, Anne-Sophie donned her dress armor and set out on foot, having only a crude map and the mysterious assistance of Nee Ys to guide her. The dress armor was in case she happened to encounter any other mortals on her journey; it was always proper to make a good first impression, after all, and the armor was as functional as it was flashy, being embedded with magicked threads and aetheroconductive metals.

Ignoring Nee Ys’s suggestions that she “ignore that boring old bird’s nest and go play in Lyhe Ghiah instead”, something that she knew would lead to Nee Ys and their fellow Fae keeping her enthralled forever, Anne-Sophie climbed higher into Il Mheg’s mountainous regions. Carpets of blushing flowers gave way to spring green grasses and countless narrow, clear mountain waterfalls that sparkled spectrums in the sunlight. As the sight of ruins came into view, she sighed. It was foolish, but somehow, she had been hoping that this last outpost had been spared the same fate as the rest of Voeburt, and though these, at least, were not beneath the lake nor overgrown with plantlife, they were still ruins, slowly succumbing to the twin powers of time and the elements.

The air whistling through crumbling crenellations and splintered apple groves smelled clean and sweet, with an undercurrent of---musk? Something akin to chocobo, but not quite the same; any son or daughter of Ishgard knew the scent of chocobos well, and this was not it. Her armor, well-forged so as to be quiet in comparison to many other makes, clanked as loudly as infantry gear in the silence, and she felt foolish for having worn it. Once she was perhaps a hundred yalms from the central group of buildings, she pulled out her spyglass, peering through it and gasping, “Amaro!” There they were, dozens of them, most of them sleeping on great nests within dilapidated walls. Though she was used to seeing them in captivity, she’d heard that there were some who lived in the wild; it seemed she’d found where.

After another bell or two of careful inspection from a distance, she was forced to conclude that, indeed, there were no other mortals present. No other knights or villagers magicked to stone, awaiting someone from a distant star to awaken them. As she made her way back to the Shelves while the sun began its descent, she felt the strange, sweet, sleeping melancholy of Wolekdorf swimming inside her blood like an alchemical solution. She would have to tell Oberic when they met up once again, after she apologized for acting like a chocobo’s ass in the Crystarium.

Another sennight had come and gone, and she still hadn’t found the words. She would start to tell him, then change her mind, not wanting to spoil the moment, wanting to protect him from something he likely knew within a bell of awakening. Anne-Sophie hoped she could find her courage, find the right hoop on which to stitch the picture of words for him. Perhaps it was better that he saw it for himself; it might make the other secret she had discovered easier to bear.

It’s May??? Idk how that happened but it’s here and I plan on making the most of it! As many of you creators probably know already, May is usually rebranded as ‘MerMay’ in which sometimes writers and artists alike will release mermaid related content.

Somehow, despite me being a massive nerd for both mythology and marine life, I have never done anything for MerMay. So I decided to participate this year! So as you can see, this months prompt set has a bit of a water based theme. I tried not to make it too heavy handed that way for those of who arent participating don’t feel too left out.

I’ll also (hopefully) be posting more MerMay related things through-out the month.

How Uhtred had ended up at a rave in the middle of nowhere had been somewhat of a mystery, even to Uhtred. He'd been out for drinks with Sihtric and the last thing he actively remembered was a woman.

Of course it had been a woman.

It was always a woman.

He'd bought her a drink and they had began to chat. She introduced herself as Skade, a few years his junior, but spellbinding never the less. Her eyes held an allure of mystery and her golden hair like silk, when it slipped through his fingers.

Somewhere in their conversation she had cast her spell and led Uhtred to the deserted warehouse outside of town. Uhtred was no stranger to adventure, boasting that he would try anything once.

The music was loud, bodies everywhere, men and women half dressed. Some over dressed, Uhtred was too drunk to care about the concerning amount of animal ears and tails that were being worn by those around him.

Skade had disappeared, promising to be back. Uhtred gazed in amazement at the lights, feeling the music, and losing his inhibitions. After Skade had left him, things began to get fuzzy.

He could almost remember the music, the crowd, the sweaty half dressed bodies rubbing against him, and even the alcohol. What he couldn't remember is how he'd gotten home or when he had left.

Sitting on the front step, he ran his hand through his hair, picking pieces of confetti from his long brown locks. His clothing had long since vanished, gods only knew where. The neon green hot pants he was wearing were certainly not his. Though they did well to match the neon green and orange body paint that covered his torso...and below.

Keys, phone, and shoes were gone. Somehow he'd managed to keep his wallet.

"Fuck." He groaned, rolling his shoulders and glancing back at the locked front door. Uhtred had pounded on the door for several minutes to no avail.

What were his neighbours thinking? Seeing him sitting on the step looking like this.

Shivering he hung his head. Sihtric had warned him.

"She's poison, if I were you, I'd stay away." He had warned when Uhtred said he was leaving with Skade.

"What a witch." Uhtred snuffled, rubbing his hands on his face.

Obviously his housemates were out or in bed, yet he gathered himself off the step and knocked again. No luck.

It felt like hours before Uhtred saw anybody. Laying back on the step, hand over his eyes to shield them from the morning sun, he sat straight when someone cleared their throat.

"Why are you covered in neon body paint?" Beocca, his brother in law, gave him a chastised glance.

"Best not to ask." Uhtred shrugged.

"A woman?"

"Can you call Finan?"

"He's not here. Which is why I am." Beocca pulled out a spare key. Unlocking the door, he stared down at Uhtred sitting on the step. "The neighbours called him about some...intruder. He couldn't reach you."

"Thank you." Uhtred stood and passed Beocca. In the house safe from prying eyes of the neighbours.

"Oh don't thank me, yet." Beocca snickered. "While you were laying on the deck, I took the liberty of sending Thyra a photo."

Uhtred snarled, his lips curling, and his eyes flashing. "I will kill you."

"We've been through this, if you don't want me shaming you, don't think with your cock." Beocca giggled like a little girl. "Now best wash that off before it sets any longer, and you my want to use some oil to rub it with first. Otherwise it makes too much of a mess."

Staring in disbelief, Uhtred blinked hard. "And what do you know about body paint?"

"Best not to ask." Beocca shook his head, waving to his brother in law, closing the door behind him.

there's a thrill to it, clementine must confess. while she knows she is undoubtedly putting herself and what she stands for at risk, she isn't too worried. she's testing the waters – curiously, recklessly. clementine resists and then succumbs to the pull in lucrezia's name. she walks to the fellow witch's house when she could've given her the protection tokens anywhere else. she fights herself and yet here she is – and she adjusts the strap of her bag on her shoulder before ringing the doorbell.

As the doorbell rings, Luce is quick to sweep down the stairs. She is a vision carefully undone, hair in messy curls and face wiped nearly bare of makeup. Only moments before she smelled of white men and cheap cologne. Now, she is honeysuckled and amber, a scent all her own. She smiles at Clementine, leaning on the frame. "Always a prompt one, aren't you Cleo?"

hazel eyes search unsure for a fit place to land. the excitement still bubbles right beneath the surface but truth be told, clementine is always less prepared than she thinks when she meets luce. the fire witch is trained to do this – to allure and to entice and clementine has always been an easy victim. clementine settles for the woman's eyes and then her own bag on the side of there body. "i'm a woman of my word," she says and nearly smiles. she shrugs instead. "can i come in? i'd just give you these but i'd rather not risk being seen."

"Can you come in," Luce repeats, rolling her eyes but smiling warm. "Always, but especially now. It's not safe to lurk outside." She holds open the door. "Come, lets sit and chat."

she nods, less inclined to smile once luce brings up their lack of safety. it’s why she’s here - to give luce means to protect herself and her home, nothing else. “thank you,” she says out of the politeness that has always been reinforced in her. the earth witch abandons her dusty boots by the entrance and then lingers, waits for luce to point out where they’re sitting. the florist clutches her bag’s strap again. “i brought you a few,” she starts, feeling awkward in silence. “one for personal use. three for your house - so front door, back door and your bedroom, if you wish.”

She's uncharacteristically quiet as she sits with Cleo, waiting through her rambles for the right moment to speak. It's unexpected and, in the way of unexpected kindness, rather cute. She'd not expected such a one eighty in treatment and, resting a cheek on her palm, she watches curiously. "Who do you think wants me dead so badly?" there's a laugh curling about her words, though it never breaks. "I would have thought that was you until..." she gestures to the menagerie of charms.

there’s a tint of pink on her cheeks when clementine replies. the florist decides it’s best to ignore the innuendo even though her face gives the emotion away. instead, she is puzzled by luce’s words. she doesn’t join the fire witch on the laugh and in contrast, her eyebrows knit together. “i- i never wanted you dead, luce.” she shakes her head. “not even before. i can hold a grudge but not to that extent.” clementine shakes her head. “i’m just- there are more and more signs that these witch hunters actually exist. i don’t want anyone in our group to get hurt by them, whoever they are.”

"Don't worry about witch hunters with me, Darling. I'm a smart girl, I know how to take care of myself." The words had been hyperbole, a taunt meant to elicit a response. That her cheeks redden only fuels Luce further. She leans closer, teasing in every line of her body, a smirk growing simple and wider on her lips. Her voice is light, a teasing that is coy and almost kind. "If not dead, how did you want me?"
