An Everyday Dilemma: Eating Healthy and Nutritious
Fitness, lifestyle, and nutrition have become equally essential aspects of my life. Growing an awareness for my health through movement or diet allows me to grow in ways that promote longevity and feeling good in my day-to-day life! Commercial food industries, however, have made it harder to live a healthy lifestyle. Navigating the area between affordable, low-nutrient foods and expensive, quality foods AND considering the increase in price is a challenge. Luckily, I can utilize economic concepts of inferior goods, normal goods, the substitution effect, and the income effect to help with my eating decisions.
For instance, if the price of an inferior good increases, the quantity demanded decreases. When I’m grocery shopping and I notice the trail mix I bought last week is no longer on sale, I do not buy it. Instead, I look for another snack, that is tortilla chips, which is on sale! Here, we see the substitution effect at hand: as the price of trail mix increases, tortilla chips become more attractive because they are sold for a lower price and are substituted as a snack.

Still, I am human and have all-time favorite brands/items that I cannot function without.... A good I consume more even as price increases, known as a normal good, would be Rebbl protein shakes! They are very convenient after the gym and on my way to school. However, I do not substitute these drinks for other protein shakes because of my loyalty to the brand and its favorable taste/consistency. As the price of Rebbl protein shakes rises by $2, my demand increases as well. I am $2 poorer, but these muscles won't recover themselves..
