Eli hesitated outside of Katie's door, his heart pounding in his chest. This was an entirely new experience for him, and the first person he could think to talk to about it was the one person who never judged him for still being a virgin. He swore off relationships because no one around him made them look inticing. If it weren’t for his sister and her messy love life, Katie and Leo definitely sold him on avoiding relationships like the plague. That was, until Eli met Georgia. She was beautiful, charming, smart, and matched his wit with ease. He had never felt this way before, and he was both excited and terrified. He had no idea what to do or how to handle his newfound feelings. Taking a deep breath, Eli finally knocked on Katie's door. He heard her voice from inside, telling him to come in. “You can’t start chatting shit or tell the other two,” he said, taking a seat on her bed as he did so. Eli lost his confidence as he felt the blush rush to his cheeks. “I need girl advice,” he mumbled so quietly he wasn’t even sure if Katie would understand what he said.

When Luna and Prince decided to keep their relationship a secret from everyone including their friends, she hadn’t really considered the consequences of it — if any. She thought about how she’d have to deal with Stacy hating her more than she already did, or how her reputation would take a nosedive considering Luna was at the top of their class and Prince was the school’s resident drug dealer, or even their friends having a million questions because how the hell did the two arch nemisis of the group end up in bed together. Everything pointed to having a secret relationship with Prince, but if she knew Cass would react the way that she did, Luna would’ve told her after the first time. The storming out and the name calling took Luna by surprise because it was so unlike Cass, and it scared her to think her best friend was that against her relationship. The tension between them had become unbearable. Luna barely saw Cassie around this past week, and when she was around, Luna got the cold shoulder. She was ready to just hear all of what Cass had to say about it and apologize, so they could move past this. Luna missed her best friend. Tip-toeing to Cassie’s door, Luna was hesistant to knock but did it softly anyway. Here goes nothing. “Cass, can we talk? Please?”

Luna never bothered much with their finances. Prince had more experience in making sure every dollar was accounted for and knowing where the money was going, so she just left him to it most of the time. She never asked many questions either because she trusted him. Every now and again, though, she’d have to check it out for herself. It had been a work-from-home day. There were brainstorms after meetings after emails. Work was starting to look crazy as they prepared for fashion week. Not only did she have to her literal work, but Luna also had to start sorting out her travel. She decided she ought to start thinking about it now before it became too last minute. Luna started to look over their accounts to check how much was there. Maybe they could turn it into a family vacation this time, but that thought was quickly lost when Luna noticed a large withdrawal. She knew she hadn’t done it which only left Prince as a suspect. Luna would’ve remembered if he said anything to her about taking out so much money. She went over every conversation they had in the past two weeks, and she still came up with nothing. Luna didn’t want to think the worst of Prince, but there was a nagging feeling that he’d done something she didn’t like and that’s why he didn’t mention anything to her about it. With a heavy sigh, Luna closed her laptop and sought out her husband. Give him the benefit of the doubt. He wouldn’t do anything stupid. She kept repeating that to herself as she searched around their home for him. Luna eventually found him in their bedroom. He looked happy to see her, but she wondered how long that would last. Luna approaches him, wrapping her arms around his waist. “Prince, can I ask you something?”

There were many things going through Luna’s mind. What the hell was Prince thinking? Why did he think he could do that? Why did he think he should do that? But most importantly, why did he get so angry at her for “lying” all those months ago when he’d been keeping something so much worse from her and for way longer? And as she laid there with Prince in her arms, neither one of them daring to break the silence, she just felt so damn angry at him. Not only for finding himself in a situation where someone’s life was on the line twice, but also because she’d allowed him to villainize her for months before he just up and left her over what seemed like a non-issue in comparison.
Luna didn’t immediately run off to Spain. When she got home after arguing with Prince that morning, she turned off her phone, climbed into bed, and fell asleep for the first time in 24 hours. She had planned to keep ignoring him but she knew if she weren’t answering his texts or his calls after a while, Prince would just show up at her doorstep and that was the last thing Luna wanted. She didn’t want to see or talk to any of them. None of her friends bothered to feel angry at Nick for what he did because they were never on the other side of it. Her friends didn’t understand but her family did. Even though Luna had no intention on telling her brothers and father the real reason for her surprise visit, it still felt comforting to be around the people who understood her the most.
The last thing Luna expected was for him to show up at her doorstep in another country, and yet, here he was in Barcelona. She didn’t know what to say, at first. Luna eventually found her words — none of them nice. She wanted him to leave. She didn’t want to see or speak to him at all. Luna was kind enough to recognize he had nowhere else to go, so she was unfortunately stuck with him. For the next few days, Luna ignored him most of the time, and if she did have to speak to him she gave short, curt answers. It wasn’t until she had an hours long talk with her dad about everything going on that Luna was finally ready to have a real conversation with Prince.
Her dad went to go stay with one of her brothers so that she and Prince had the house to themselves. It was later at night when Luna finally text Prince to meet her outside on the veranda. She could hear him approach her, but she still couldn’t bring herself to really look at him. “I think I’m ready to talk to you.”

Luna couldn’t recall a time she ever had a full conversation with Nick Keller. They’d known each other for years, hung out together all the time, but she still couldn’t remember ever just speaking to him — not about Cass or Prince or even some other superficial topic like what liquor to buy for the next party he threw — but to him, as a person or as her friend. They didn’t have much in common besides their friends and lack of parental supervision. Or at least that had been the case before Cass and Prince decided to give them one more thing to have in common.
                       ───────────
Luna hadn’t spoken to her friends in weeks if she felt like she could even still call them that. She just had so much resentment towards them for driving Prince away that, at times, it blinded her to her own fault in the situation. She had been so focused on being a good friend that it made her lose sight of being a good girlfriend. Now, she had neither. Luna focused her attention on school and work. If she wasn’t busy with one, she was doing the other. It had become a bit exhausting, but it was much better than having any downtime to focus on how fucked her life had become.
“Desi, you have to clean the—what are they called in English? El mejillón?” Luna racked her brain trying to remember the word but gave up after a minute. “Whatever they’re called, you have to clean those before you put them in the paella. It will be disgusting now, but I bet you’re still gonna eat it,” She giggled. Luna and her brother were on FaceTime. It’d been a while since she spoke with him, and since her flat had become so empty, the homesickness was hitting her a little harder than usual. They made plans a few days ago to make her favorite Spanish food together. It was nice to talk to him. Before moving to London, Desi was the person she was closest to because they were only 11 months apart in age, and she needed that again. She opened her mouth to speak until she was interrupted by a knock on her door. Luna raised a brow, not having been expecting any guests. Wiping her hands clean with a dish towel, she picked up her phone and moved towards the door. Her brother asked who it was, and she shrugged. “Either I’ll have to call you back, or you’ll have to call 999.” Luna looked through the peephole and rolled her eyes. “I’ll call you back.” Her brother started to protest, but she hung up on him as she opened the door to see Nick Keller on the other side.
That day Luna was so annoyed that he’d come over, but she never did give her brother that call back. She and Nick talked for hours, sharing her paella as she explained her disappearing act and how she hadn’t been doing too well. He must’ve pitied her because, after that, Nick would start showing up at Luna’s door a couple times a week. She welcomed the company since she still wasn’t speaking to Matt and Panda, and the other two people in her life didn’t have much of a physical presence anymore. Sometimes Luna would make them dinner, and other times they’d just have tea and chat, but one thing they never did was talk about Prince and Cassie. Nick would tell her about what dumb thing Matt did that day, and she would talk about work and school, never addressing the elephant in the room until one day, Nick just took the leap and asked how Cass was doing. Luna was caught off guard by his question because they’d been talking about when she planned on speaking to their other friends again. “Oh, um, she’s good. She started working at this cafe recently, and she won’t shut up about it because it’s like some dream she’s always had in her head.” He seemed content with the answer, a small smile on his face, although his features showed a hint of sadness. “You’re lucky you get to ask, y’know.” Somehow, Luna figured her words would cheer him up a bit. He looked up at her. “I know it sucks that she didn’t say goodbye and that you’re not the person she still talks to, but I think you’re really lucky for being able to know if she’s doing okay.” He shakes his head but returns to their previous conversation to avoid delving deeper into the topic. They decided she’d go home with him today to make up with Panda and Matt, but that’s the last time they talk about Prince and Cass until a few weeks later.
                       ───────────
Luna would have days where she could be reminded of Prince, be sad for five minutes, and move on with her day. Other times, not so much, and today was a not-so-much day. She’d already cut her hair, but there were still so many things in her flat that reminded her of Prince. Luna wanted to get rid of it all, starting with her bedroom. Every picture was thrown into the bottom drawer of her desk, and she tossed her sheets in the bin and replaced them with some that he never laid in. The biggest task left was her closet.
She made it easy for him to leave, she thought to herself. He couldn’t have had much to pack because she found shirt after shirt in her closet. Each one having memories attached to it— him waking her up with coffee in the morning, her secretly stealing it from their trip to Paris because she wanted something to remember it by, him managing to finally convince Luna to skip her uni classes. They didn’t leave her bed once that day. Luna tried to push through the task, but she was spiraling. Her mind was filled with him. She still loved him. She missed him.
Abandoning her closet, she went to her living room for another distraction. She only got as far as picking up the remote before her tears blinded her vision and a sob clawed its way out. Luna heard the front door open, but she didn’t care enough to lift her head to see who it was. She stopped caring about a lot of things lately like locking the door. It was something she’d always nag at Cass about, but there wasn’t anything in her flat that she cared for anymore, herself included. There was no point. She knew whoever it was didn’t mean her any harm when they asked what was wrong, and she immediately recognized that it was Nick.
She laughed bitterly, finally lifting her head to look at her friend. “What’s always wrong. The reason you even come over here in the first place. We weren’t friends, Nick, let’s be real here, but you come over and look at me with your sad fucking eyes because we had to break each other’s hearts when we had to tell each other that the people we love left us without saying a word, but we sit here and drink tea all the fucking time and pretend that’s not the only reason we’re even talking.” Nick wasn’t put-off by her outburst because he comes and sits next to her, wrapping an arm around her shoulder and encouraging her to rest her head on his, which she does. The pair sit in silence for a while, Luna’s sniffling being the only noise in the room before she speaks up again.
“I never needed him to love me as much as I loved him. I just needed him to love me enough.” Nick asks enough for what? “I don’t know — enough to not leave me. Enough to say fucking goodbye…..enough to take me with him just — enough. Why couldn’t he give me enough?”
                       ───────────
After that, they stop pretending like their shared fucked up love lives aren’t what’s making them hang out, and they start talking about it more. Nick tells her how much Cass hurt him, and she talks about how much Prince hurt her. Luna tries to reassure him of things without giving too much away. It was honestly nice for Luna to have someone to speak to that understood what she was going through, but it sucked he could never provide her enough back.
One day, he speaks up about his and Prince’s night at the bar the night before he broke up with her. Luna chuckles.“I knew he was going to break up with me that night, Nick.” Nick’s eyes grow wide. He asks if it’s because Prince said something but she shakes her head.“I knew he was going to break up with me because every time I saw him the last few months he was here, I knew he was always so close to doing it. I don’t know why he stayed with me so long. Maybe to torture me and make me feel as bad as he did.”
“Why did you stay so long then?”
Luna shrugs. “I guess the same reason why you stayed around for Cass.”
                      ───────────
Nick and Luna had been hanging out in her bed, staring up at the ceiling as they once again bonded over the trauma Cass and Prince caused them. “A while ago, his mum was here," Luna didn't know why she was bringing this up, but she just thought of the moment and had to share. "But she left and we had this whole thing where I told him that I’d be his person who stays, always.” She said the last word of her sentence with sadness. “I promised I’d never leave him, so I just-“ Luna paused, taking a deep breath to control the aching in her chest that her words were causing. “I just wonder if he realized I needed a person who stays too.” Luna reminds herself of what she told Prince about people who leave— they do it because they're selfish, and there's something wrong with them. It had nothing to do with the people they left. She still believed the former half, but she was struggling with not taking it so personally. Her eyes move from the ceiling to Nick's face. "Do you blame yourself for Cass leaving?" He says no because he doesn't even know why she left. Luna's voice is in a whisper when she asks her next question. "Do you blame yourself for her not saying goodbye, then?" Nick is quiet for a beat, but he eventually says no to that too. He repeats the question back to her. She nods her head.
“Nick, I don’t even think them leaving is the issue.” Nick is confused and looks at her, but she refocuses her gaze on the ceiling. “They never asked us to go with them. They left everything behind and we weren’t special enough to be exceptions.” Luna briefly considered how much her comment might sting for Nick because Cass did have an exception, and she was laying right next to him. At least when Prince left, he decided no one was worth speaking to anymore, including the person he trusted enough to tell that he was leaving. Luna rolls over and rests her head on his chest and he welcomes it. “How could we be so in love with people who just viewed us as the same as everyone else?” Nick lightens the mood by joking about them hooking up. Luna laughs and pushes him away, and they joke about why they’d never.
"I like talking to you, Nick, seriously." They gaze at each other, smiles on their faces. "I'm sorry I told Cass that you're like a stale piece of bread, and I don't know why she hangs out with you." They both laugh before he pushes her off of her bed. She hits the floor with a thud. "Okay, I accept that I deserved that," Luna groaned as she stood up. That doesn't stop her from punching him in the arm, though. "So what's for dinner, Keller?"

luna was well aware that she wasn’t the only girl prince had been with. she wasn’t even close to it, but what had pissed her off was learning that when she’d asked him about these other girls, he seemingly downplayed what actually went on. granted that she did inquire about his dating life pretty early on in their relationship, but the questions ‘have you ever a had a girlfriend’ and ‘were you ever close to being serious with someone’ lended themselves to pretty straightforward answers regardless of their status at the time. her interest had been peaked at first when matt and nick started getting into prince’s past flings. luna tried to keep her expression neutral at the mention of any girl prince had been with, but it was so hard with the jealousy brewing inside of her at every named mentioned. it was such a bad idea to hang out with just the boys, she thought, and her neutral expression had been thrown out of the window at the mention of prince actually liking someone. her face was a mix of disbelief and anger. prince never mentioned fancying anyone before. she didn’t understand why this was the first time she was hearing of sky. she only glanced at prince momentarily because the second matt and nick started listing off the things he’d done with this girl she couldn’t stand to look at him without wanting to punch his face in. there was only so much more luna could take of their teasing before she mumbled an excuse about homework and dipped. it was a bad excuse because she used it all the time. they all went to the same school, so it was obvious she never had as much homework as she let on, but she was just going to let prince deal with their suspicions if they had any. prince likely wouldn’t even have much to explain after tonight anyway because she was so angry that she decided that they were done. luna really couldn’t wrap her head around why prince felt the need to lie to her about this unless there was more to the story. judging by how defensive he got with matt and nick, it wasn’t hard to let her imagination run wild with theories. she felt her phone buzz in her pocket. luna was aware it was prince, so she didn’t even bother to read his text before telling him to fuck off. it was far too late to try and explain it all now. it was wishful thinking on her part that prince would actually fuck off, but if he wanted to fight about this, who was she to say no? “you’re such a fucking liar, d’you know that, prince? why is the first time i’m hearing about sky,” she paused to make a disgusted face. “from those gilipollas and not you?”

luna only understood what it was like to have loving parents. she was essentially the center of her parents’s universe as she was their youngest and only daughter. her dad, at times, had a strange way of expressing his love but her mom, luna’s mom embodied everything it meant to be a mother. she was kind, nurturing, selfless, patient and most of all — present. it hurt like hell she wasn’t anymore, but the little time they had together was infinitely times better than never having her at all. not having a mother was a pain luna would never truly be able to grasp, which meant when prince finally confessed to her the reason he’d been acting weird lately was because his mom showed up and he’d been helping her, she tried to be there for him. she should’ve understood prince’s willingness to help his mom but she didn’t. luna, honestly, couldn’t stand the woman. that didn’t stop her from being by his side as he dealt with it. she just tried to conceal her distaste whenever she could. luna hadn’t heard much from him the past couple of days, so she stopped by his flat to visit him. letting herself in, luna found her boyfriend and wrapped her arms around his waist, a pout on her lips. “what have you been up to, babe? i missed you.”

luna always had to force herself to have fun on this trip every year. she hated the fact that she had to be there because her best friend and soulmate died. it became easier to enjoy when they all started having kids because it made it feel more like a vacation with her friends than an annual funeral she had to endure. spending time with her makeshift family and their kids became the highlight of this trip. that was, until she walked into what could only be explained as a crime scene. leo giving them his best smile was enough to incriminate him if his red first and jake cradling his face didn’t confirm what she already knew. prince was seemingly more worried about his leg than anything else happening around them. leo’s explanation for why he was in pain is what really nearly sent her over the edge. luna’s first instinct was to be livid with leo because what the hell was he thinking when he dragged his broken leg across the room just to get into a fight. she went with the more rational part of her and decided they should just talk about it in the morning because if she spoke right now she’d just end up yelling, and that wouldn’t have helped anyone. she handed him crutches, not without letting him know that she had words for him in the morning. luna was so mad at him. after sending the kids away and going into their own room, she whipped around to face prince. “what are we going to do with that boy?”

leo had high hopes for his and katie’s first summer together as a couple. even though they were older now with real responsibilities, they could still savor their time together especially now that katie had one less thing to worry about since school was out. he’d stopped by her place after work just because he missed her. leo was also looking forward to discussing all of their plans. it took him back to the day katie had rambled on about all of the things she wanted them to do together right before he had to break the news that he had a girlfriend.  hopefully, they would be able to do it this year just as she’d imagined it. asking her what she wanted to do during her break from school, leo raised an eyebrow when she mentioned taking cheryl to new york to visit jake. if he were being honest, he kind of forgot that jake was even somewhat in the picture. “he’s the one who moved away. why do you always have to go to him?” leo asked with a frown.

this was bad, like, really bad. this was possibly the worst thing the twins had ever done, but no one forced leo to do that, so could they really be blamed for the fact that they were in the hospital’s waiting room while leo was being prepped for surgery? apparently, leo fractured his badly enough that he needed wires to be put into it to realign and fix his bones. ava felt sheepish because of all the eyes on her and her family. her dad hadn’t stopped giving out to them since the moment he ran outside and saw their cousin writhing on the ground in pain while her and eli stood over him, dumbfounded. on the ride to the hospital with leo in the backseat screaming about his leg, ava quickly sent a text to katie that something bad had happened to him and she needed to get there. ava was aware they weren’t on good terms but surely katie would drop everything if she knew leo was in the hospital. ava tapped her feet against the linoleum floors with her hands tucked underneath her thighs, chewing on her lip as she stared at the entrance, waiting for katie to show up. she’d come. ava knew she would.

luna wasn’t even sure if she was headed in the right direction or even to the right apartment. she’d never been here before. she was hoping she got the address right or else she’d be screwed and that was the last thing she needed right now. her mind, her thoughts, were everywhere and moving a mile a minute. she couldn’t believe she did that. she couldn’t believe she was doing this. stopping in front of the door she thought was cass’s apartment, luna started banging on the door frantically. she started to get annoyed when no one seemed to be answering. didn’t these people answer their door immediately at four in the morning? she began pacing back and forth, her hands in her hair, not really knowing what to do. it was such a bad idea for her to get on a one way flight to paris so late at night with bed head and a random outfit, but she couldn’t stay in her bed a second longer. she needed her best friend.

it was strange to be engaged. she was happy about it— of course she was— but it felt like they were putting a bandaid on a bullet wound and pretending everything was fine, and nothing was fine once luna got past the fanfare. luna thought back to the nine months she spent crying and missing prince. nine months she spent wondering how he was, if he missed her, if he moved on, why he left, and more importantly, why he left without saying goodbye to her. all of the times she came to terms with the fact that maybe prince just didn’t love her as much as she wanted him to—that he was never serious about her. the effort she put into erasing every memory she had of him because she couldn’t handle remembering him, still loving him, and having to realize she might not ever see him again. and for the past two months since he came back, her days were filled with nothing but anger and resentment as she tried to get him to understand that and never being quite successful at it. it made her feel terrible. she loved him. she didn’t want to be without him. she didn’t want to lose him again, and that’s why she needed to talk to him.
luna walked up the familiar stairs of prince’s old flat. it gave her the chilling memory of finding out from nick that he’d left and her bursting inside to make sure and finding nothing there. his flat was still relatively empty (not that it had much when he lived there full time anyway) but at least it had signs of life now. she called out prince’s name and made her way to his bedroom when he called back to her. luna greeted him with a kiss before turning to close the door behind her. she hovered by it watching him, not really sure how to start the conversation. “can we talk?”
