i rely too much on future me. like i be fucking up in the present knowingly. like before every fuck up i actually can stop and be like this is Not Good. think of something you did for past-you as present-you. I don't think you need insults, it kind of seems like you have that covered. Try instead to see how much you did do with what you had. Knowing that something is wrong is already step 1. Step 2 is stepping away from it. A #PsychHack I use for when I want to do something that I know isn't good for me, is telling myself "I'm going to do that later." and keep pushing the later back until I no longer want to do it. For some reason, our brains like "later" more than "no".

I'm going to be hosting another iteration of my 2 day intensive overnight program for dismantling the effects of beauty culture on the psyche. Our society has yet to grasp the extent at which beauty and objectification culture has affected the whole —  from the entertainment media archetypes that have caused us to silently relegate certain women into categories that shape their own view of themselves for the rest of their lives, to the varying experiences endured by our ancestors as a result of beauty culture. My Indian grandmother, for example, was selected to be married to someone else based on her physical appearance. What kind of subconscious message would that have sent to her, to be viewed that way? I find the most compelling parts of this 2 day process to be the points when we engage in group psych-hacking rituals. Did you know that looking at an expansive view can improve mood? New research suggests that looking at panoramic views expands our vision and slows our breathing thereby releasing calming hormones. That’s why we have that sense of awe at the Grand Canyon or a beautiful sunset. When we narrow our view (literally and figuratively), our breathing often shallows and our bodies are more likely to release stress hormones. So if you’re scrolling through social media or typing away for an assignment, make sure to take breaks and look outside! Also, taking in sunlight for a few minutes first thing in the morning can offset a lot of focusing we do during the day. Girls as young as age 3 demonstrate weight bias! (Harriger, 2015) In one study, girls were asked to point to the Barbie they wanted to play with and which one of the pair they thought was: - smart/ not smart, - happy/ sad, - pretty/ not pretty 94% of the girls chose the thinner doll to play with and their top choice for the less desirable characteristics was the curvier doll. When asked why they didn’t want to play with the curvier one, >25% said it was because she was chubby/big. Weight bias predicts a host of mental health risks, including depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem, not to mention empathy and openness to “non-ideal” bodied peers (Paxton & Damiano, 2016). BOUNDARIES=PROTECTION Everyone talks about boundaries: healthy boundaries, unhealthy boundaries, where do they begin or end? If you didn’t have a model of healthy boundaries growing up, you may have had your boundaries infringed upon. When we feel helpless to boundary infringement, both the event and the resulting feelings - no matter how long they last - can be traumatic and/or lead to resentment and burn out. Our energy is so sacred. My friend @beccajohnsonsavage says “You only have so many spoons per day.” @markmanson talks about “fucks to give.” Whatever you call it, if you begin to assert your preferences, wants, needs, and limits, you learn to treat yourself better and, in turn, you train others how to treat you.
