hello, folks! this blog ain't dead!

it has been six whole ass years since i last posted anything to this blog. (jesus christ time is fake.) i got distracted by life before too long back then, but it was a lot of fun while i was running it and also honestly fucking hilarious.

fast forward to now, when i've been rereading the series on a nostalgia kick, and have proper access to ebooks of the first series with a search function to get around, instead of relying solely on what i can find manually flipping around the physical copies. at first i was mostly just content with rolling my eyes at the random worldbuilding and so on inconsistencies, pick and choose which ones i wanted to roll with, combine, or discard. it's mostly pretty simple, and not very difficult to do; it's not a numbers game or anything.

but then i started to get into the timeline stuff. first for the purposes of figuring out characterization dynamics and whatnot; then out of morbid curiosity; and now out of sheer grim determination just to figure out how extensive the inconsistencies are. (and, well, to decide what version of a Fixed Timeline i would want to use in my own writing. and also because this is the kind of thing that's fun for my pedantic ass.) point is, i'm going in with the intent of figuring out what we've been presented with in the series itself.

and, dear reader: what a fucking mess.

i've been trying to figure it out on my own in private; but the upfuck is so fractal, and involves enough estimation and pinning down small details, that it is genuinely difficult to keep track of everything. so! i'm resurrecting this blog. i could just use my main fandom blog, @angorwhosebabyisthis, but honestly there's So Much it would drown out all the other meta and whatnot there for LL alone, much less other fandoms. this blog already exists, so i figured, hey, why not?

on top of that, if you think you've caught a mistake or a piece of info, you're welcome to send it in! i'll check it to verify--whether that it's factually stated without contradictions, or stated with contradictions, or is neither confirmed nor denied but is a reasonable estimate by the standards i'm using--and if it holds up i'll add it to any masterposts with credit.

(no offense if i don't add it! i just want to try to keep things as clear as i can for my own sanity, because this series--in particular its timeline--is already such an absolute headache to figure out.)

i'm going to keep some masterposts/threads; so far the main ones i have planned are a post laying out the standards and assumptions i'm going to be using, a single timeline post to keep track of everything as the information currently stands, and an ongoing thread of updates to keep a record of previous changes. i'm going to be feeling my way around the format as i go, but i'm going to do my best to figure it out. i'm also going to be trying to use organizational tags that won't show up in the public tags, in the interests of not spamming them.

In preparation for my annual Pink Bette film awards next month, I compiled a list of all previous Bette winners.

If you don't know, the Pink Bettes are my own personal awards that display much better taste than the Oscars. They're on par with the Mackolades and the Golden Elliotts! (And were inspired by the Golden Elliotts; thanks Elliott.) I sometimes have snarky categories (Worst Performance, which has only ever been used once, for Eddie Redmayne in Jupiter Ascending) or silly categories/wins (Psyduck is considered a Bette winner because he was iconic in Detective Pikachu). Basically, I try not to take them too seriously! And not every "win" is necessarily a mark of quality! I don't give only one winner per category because that's boring, and why do we have to only have one winner? Each category can have 3+ winners, with Performance categories (nongendered) having up to 9.

I've been doing them for years now—the first was January 4th, 2020, for the movies I watched from January 2019 through December 2019. (So they were new-to-me in that year, not necessarily released in that year.)

And I love my tables and statistics and trivia. So here are some pieces of trivia.

Every year except for the first year (because there were fewer categories), I have given 5 Bettes to one movie per year. For the movies of 2020, it was Parasite. For 2021, it was Witness for the Prosecution. For 2022, it was Everything Everywhere All At Once. No one movie has won more than 5 Bettes in a year, so this is basically the highest acclaimed movie of the year.

I have given five actors multiple Favourite Performance awards. These are Cate Blanchett, Rita Moreno, Hong Chau, Marlene Dietrich, and Mia Goth. Of these, only Marlene Dietrich has won Lead Performance twice; the other four are either Supporting twice (Rita Moreno) or a mix. Everyone else has only won one Favourite Performance. No one has three yet.

Additionally, I also do a special subsection each year, called the Keanu Reeves Award For Slutty, Slutty Film Men, where basically I award the men who drove me crazy in film each year. Only three men have won a Keanu twice: Keanu himself, Ryan Gosling, and Ethan Hawke. No one has three yet, but 1991 Keanu showed ass in a movie I watched this year, so... spoilers, he's going to get to three.

Anyway, I feel like I'm super enthusiastic about film and le cinéma, so I'm super excited this year to put together my Bettes!!

my favourite pokemon is actually pumpkaboo! a bat AND a pumpkin? iconic. amazing. but!!! i also love gengar and mimikyu and litwick (unfortunately i Have A Favourite Type). psyduck is also very special to me and haz is always telling me i am like jigglypuff due to being Round and Also A Singer!!!

Pokemon: Shiny vs. Default, 0054-0055

Alright, much shorter one today. Despite being elevated to mascot status thanks to the anime, and being Masuda’s favourite Pokemon, and being available in one form or another in every single main series release besides pre-DLC SwSh, Psyduck has never received any alternate forms. No Mega, no regional variant, no G-max, it’s just the same thing from the word go.

Psyduck is a Pokemon I love for its character, but I’m less wild about in terms of its in-game capabilities. Golduck is just sort of there. Also, I still find it weird that the Gold Duck is called Psyduck, and the Psychic Duck is called Golduck. Yeah they’re both psychic but Golduck actually has control of its powers.

We’ll start with Psyduck itself.

Okay, this is a good start. One benefit Psyduck has from its mascot-status being more... lowkey, is that Psyduck’s shiny actually has a colour variation! Nothing lame like Pikachu or Jigglypuff. Nothing very minor like Meowth or Clefairy. Psyduck’s shiny is a nice shade of teal-blue, and I would absolutely take it if I found one. At the same time, though, Psyduck’s default colours are still iconic, and thus I’ll declare this one a draw!

Now, let’s cover the second form, Golduck!

Aaaaand you beefed it. The skin barely changes and the pink beak and webbing look awful. It looks like sunburned skin. Default wins.
