Hill, President of the American Tobacco Company, wanted to change that… Yet how do you change the mind of an entire society? (Many marketers have tried this before and failed). He hired Edward Bernays to solve the problem… Bernays met with a leading psychiatrist to better understand his audience. He then asked his secretary to be a suffragette and recruit beautiful, feminist women to march in New York’s Easter Parade. They invited the press to the event telling them the women would light up “Torches of Freedom” during the parade. On cue, the females lit up their cigarettes… And the media outlets went wild! “𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹𝘀 𝗣𝘂𝗳𝗳 𝗖𝗶𝗴𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗚𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗺” Ran on the front page of the New York Times in 1929 – (Neither Bernays nor American Tobacco were mentioned) Yet, Bernays had done his job – by making smoking acceptable to women… And American Tobacco could now make more money selling their product.
