love and hope and kindness being the running motifs in madoka magica and the forces that can single-handedly save and curse someone.
madoka’s love and kindness being what saves homura from her suicidal tendencies, but also what ultimately dooms madoka to die at the hands of the walpurgisnacht. homura’s love for madoka and undying hope to save her what curses her to repeat time and traumatise herself over and over again, while also increasing madoka’s karma and by default, cursing her too. madoka’s refusal for homura’s hope to be in vain being the driving force that grants hope to all, but also ends madoka’s existence. sayaka’s love for kyousuke and her altruistic, heroic ideals being what gives her confidence and hope at first, but when confronted with misogyny and unrequited love (even when you told yourself you would not expect him to love you back just because you sacrificed yourself for him) being what curses her. kyouko’s love for her family being the catalyst that leads it to break apart, because in all her childlike devotion to her parents, she couldn’t see her father for who he was. mami’s kindness forcing her to put up a brave face and resulting in her demise.
but it all does not end in despair! sayaka’s newfound love for kyouko being the reason kyouko is no longer lost and angry and alone. mami’s kindness finding a recipient in nagisa, to whom she can finally be a parental figure. in one universe nagisa was the one to end mami’s existence, but now they can both heal and not be alone anymore. madoka’s love for homura encompassing time and space and saving her, every time, over and over again. even when homura does not want it. even when she refuses her hand. madoka will always reach for her and find her and save her and show her kindness, even when homura thinks she does not deserves any, even when she’s willing to die in her own personal hell. homura’s love being yes, what commits the unforgivable sin and tears god apart, but also it is only through her “selfishness” and “terrible” act that the others get a shot at a normal childhood/adolescence. kyouko and sayaka can be together at last, mami and nagisa find each other, madoka can live with her family again.
this is what i hope will be explored in the next movie. this intrinsic relationship between hope and despair, love as a lifeline and a curse. kindness and selfishness coexisting and influencing each other. i hope the girls manage to finally tip the scale between hope and despair towards the light. i hope madoka’s love will keep on reaching homura even when she thinks she’s evil incarnate, a devil. even when she thinks her existence as antithetical to madoka’s true nature. even when she thinks herself beyond salvation. i hope they get a shot at happiness, together this time.

A closer look at “Mami Tomoe’s Everyday Life”
“Mami Tomoe’s Everyday Life” is fascinating. It’s said to be the single most successful and longest-running manga spinoff of Puella Magi Madoka Magica in Japan, but it’s never been given any kind of official English translation. Even the fan translation abandoned it after just four chapters!
This likely happened because the Western fandom seems to mostly think it’s trash for some reason... and I believe that’s based on very limited information available to English-speakers and a misunderstanding of some elements of it. Personally, I think there’s a lot to it that’s really cool and interesting. I think the PMMM fandom is really underappreciating it - not that I can particularly blame them, because the Western fandom doesn’t have reason to know much about it in the first place.
So, what is it?
Mami Tomoe’s Everyday Life (sometimes translated as “Mami Tomoe’s Mundane Everyday Life” or “Mami Tomoe’s Very Average Everyday Life”) is a manga about Mami Tomoe at age 31. The rest of the Holy Quintet is in their late 20s and have mostly left active “magical girl-ing” behind in favor of their settled-down adult lives. They’ve even gotten married. But Mami — once seen as the leader of the group who had herself the most “together” — hasn’t moved on in the same way. She’s still living alone and still single. She’s still going out and fighting witches in her free time. She’s holding down a temp office job that she naturally can’t feel very invested in. In short: She feels like her friends have left her behind.

This series is, at its core, a “slice of life” comedy manga about being single and alone in your 30s and that feeling that you aren’t meeting your potential. But of course, it wouldn’t be PMMM without darker undertones and weird mythology tweaks. They tend to bounce between doing pretty standard “My adult life is going nowhere” comedy chapters and chapters about how the PMMM mythology has been tweaked here.
So let’s take a look at what’s going on in this alternate universe of the Holy Quintet, eh?
The girls all still have their powers to transform and fight, but with most of them (save Mami and Homura) out of practice, it’s gotten a lot harder for them. Witches don’t show up in Mitakihara nearly as often as they used to, so they haven’t had much need to prioritize that. Except for Homura, who notes that she’s continued hunting every witch she senses in order to protect Madoka.

Spray your soul gem with hand sanitizer = get wasted off of the alcohol. This seems to carry a lot of implications.
As far as their soul gems go... well, in this universe, they’ve determined that they can clean/purify their soul gems by literally just polishing and scrubbing them! But for some reason, Mami’s soul gem keeps getting darker more frequently/faster than anyone else’s, and the other girls rarely seem to need a full cleaning. (Things that Make You Go Hmmm, Part 1)
Tumblr media
Kyubey is one of Mami’s closest confidants. He visits her semi-regularly to check on her. Although he appreciates her ongoing dedication to being a magical girl, he does note that it’s pretty unusual once girls reach a certain age, and he encourages her to consider retirement. He actually helps her out with chores around her apartment on more than one occasion. At one point, Mami asks him why he made them into magical girls in the first place, but Kyubey... can’t remember any particular reason for creating the magical girl system or for choosing them. (Things that Make You Go Hmmm, Part 2)
Homura is married to Madoka’s little brother in this series. (!) Yes, TATSUYA. (!!!) WOW. However, she continues to act very, very gay for Madoka the entire time regardless of this. Sooo, if anything has ever screamed “This guy is just a beard I married so I had an excuse to stay close to my one true love,” this right here is it. (Also, Homura is 30 and Tatsuya is 19. That’s... let’s just be charitable and say that the age gap is um, noteworthy.)
Tumblr media
Homura breaks into an ecstatic blush as Madoka reaches out to her and invites her to hold her hand as they return home together. Yeah, lookin’ real “straight” there Homu. Keep up the good work, honey.
In a somewhat surprising turn of events, Sayaka wound up marrying Kyosuke. They even have two kids by the start of the series. The second chapter of the series sees the group attending Hitomi’s wedding, so hey, at least there are no hard feelings there.
At one point, Mami stumbles across her old journals about initially meeting/taking in Kyoko, and she’s embarrassing by the flowery and romantic language she used therein. KyoMami fans will absolutely lap the journal stuff right the hell up, heh.
Tumblr media
“The walls that imprison my heart have been lit ablaze by her crimson soul and let free.”
Because being meguca is suffering, you’d probably suspect that this “slice-of-life comedy” will eventually have angst and despair in it. And you’d be correct.  There seem to be increasing hints towards where things are headed as the series progresses, so — if you’re familiar with PMMM — there’s a good chance that you can somewhat predict what’s up. But if you want spoilers... well, here’s what some fan sites THINK they’ve determined.
SPOILERS FOR THE BIG REVEAL (... OR IS IT?) BELOW THE CUT
ETA ***IMPORTANT****: So, okay. There used to be a couple of different sites that claimed they knew about this reveal, and I had attempted to cite them herein. But now? They’ve either vanished entirely (i.e., become dead links) OR deleted the related text about this. So maybe this is all false now????? I DON’T KNOW! But I don’t want to spread misinformation, so I’m updating this as well as I can. But the below MIGHT not be true now.
....with that now said, what we THOUGHT we knew was that, after damn near 100 chapters, this whole universe was supposedly revealed to be a bubble similar to the one Homura experienced in Rebellion. Except this one is for Mami, naturally. At the moment when she was about to transform into a witch, her mind escaped into a bubble universe of her own creation wherein Mami imagined their lives if they didn’t have to inevitably die and could just keep on being friends into adulthood. But alas, Mami was too full of despair to even allow herself to have a happy and satisfying life within her own delusion. So, well, shit.
....buuuuut, the series was just too damn popular to actually end, I guess. (Or maybe this was never true?) Despite the big reveal of what was going on certainly FEELING like it was intended to be the end of it, we’ve just kind of sunk right back into ongoing stories about Mami and Co. living as young thirtysomethings, because... well, where ELSE you gonna get that kind of thing from, I suppose... ?
