Punch and Judy : the tragical comedy or comical tragedy. Adams, Maryline Poole printer, binder.

Punch and Judy is a traditional British puppet or marionette show that stars Mr. Punch, and his wife Judy. These two, alongside a rotating cast of stock characters (such as the Hangman, The Constable, The Baby, The Devil, ect) act out short comedic sketches heavily based on outrageous comedy, or slapstick. Another popular feature is having the audience participate by trying to 'warn' the characters of danger or pointing out things that they are 'missing'.

Today's item is shaped like the traditional puppet booth and includes a typical Punch and Judy plot line with movable paper figures. There is also an illustration of the inside of the booth next to the colophon.

The Actual Adventure for A Killing Glare for Shadowrun (1st/2nd Edition). Part 4.

The team is hired by apparently the ineptest sports manager ever, Joseph “Baby Joe” Johnson, and if you’re thinking that that sounds like a Mob sobriquet, well, Baby Joe does start the adventure off in debt to the Mafia – he used this money to recruit Punch & Judy to the Seattle Screamers. To pay off that debt, genius Baby Joe then borrows more money from the yakuza, intending to bet it all on his own team and reap an enormous reward.

This guy makes Pete Rose look like Howdy Doody.

Not the stretch you think it is.

Of course, the Mafia gets wind of this – because Baby Joe is apparently blithely carrying around cartoon bags of nuyen around on Crime Street – and puts their bets on the opposing team (New York Slashers) while gently suggesting to Punch & Judy and the rest of the Screamers that, you know, maybe the Screamers lose unless you’d like a long-term underwater tour of the bottom of the Puget Sound.

Baby Joe finds out – because does no one have encrypted private communication channels in 2054? – and is now panicking because it’s looking like the two syndicates will have to flip a coin to see which gets to geek Joe first.

Here is where the players come in: they are hired by Baby Joe (presumably with money borrowed from, I dunno, a Seoulpa Ring?) to dig up dirt on Punch & Judy so that he can strongarm them back into, you know, wanting to win the upcoming game.

More coaches should use this as a motivational strategy.

Baby Joe also makes no efforts to conceal his identity, so couldn’t the runners just double-cross him and take this story to the screamsheets? Likely net them more money than they’ll get from Joe.

Let’s talk about time.

The last with the classic lineup.

The issue of the Seattle News Intelligencer Update at the back of the adventure is dated June 10th, 2054, which is a Wednesday. The news article mentions that the super brawl takes place on a Thursday, with the previous Thursday being June 4th. The Adventure Timeline in the Introduction says that the Super Brawl take place on Day 4 of the adventure, so the runners are hired at 10pm on Monday, June 1st, 2054.

The step that must happen next is the runners meeting Bubba – the burned-out elf mage who knows who Punch & Judy really are. Baby Joe gives them no other leads, so the runners are forced to bust out the Etiquette dice and work the pocket secretary to move along.

Problems!

Legwork takes time! The basic rules as laid out in the adventure say it takes 2D6 hours for a contact to get back with any relevant information, or on average, 7 hours per Etiquette check. There are optional rules for trading off Etiquette successes for a more rapid response, but…

Bubba is not easy to track down! One of the runners needs 4 successes on an Etiquette (4) test to even get Bubba’s name (his address is a separate legwork roll). Only half of the 16 archetypes in the core rulebook have a sufficient Corp or Street Etiquette to swing that, and the chances of getting 4 successes on an Etiquette (4) aren’t that great either (6.25% for single character with Etiquette 4).

Given that the very next section is the PCs meeting Bubba, the GM is just letting them sweat just a tiny bit before moving on.
