Omg is there a worse movie than Music? Fucking hell why was that even allowed to get made
I know it's been like, a year, but I'm STILL astounded every time I'm reminded that movie was actually allowed to be made.
Especially the 'promoting prone restraint' thing. That's so genuinely dangerous and they didn't even cut the scenes?? They couldn't even be bothered to do that much?? What the fuck.

Puppetgate
Those of you who aren’t on autistic twitter are missing out on Puppetgate.
Hold onto your pants because this is going to get UNREAL.
1. A London playhouse reveals that it will be doing a play about a family whose non-verbal autistic child is being sent to an institution.
The autistic child will be represented by a puppet.
2. Autistic Twitter: “A puppet? What the fuck? Like we already feel like we are treated as inhuman things with no voice.”
3. Play supporters: “but Julia from Sesame Street is okay right?”
4. Autistic twitter: “...true but why a puppet?”
5. Playhouse: “because of child labour laws. You can’t ask a non verbal autistic child to perform in a play day after day.”
6. Autistic Twitter: “but why couldn’t a small adult actor just...”
7. Playhouse: “okay and here is the puppet!”
Tumblr media
8. Autistic Twitter: “Oh dear god what is that unholy abomination?”
9. Playhouse: “it’s great right? This puppet is going to be SO MUCH more like an autistic child than a human could ever be!”
(Seriously)
https://twitter.com/allinarowplay/status/1092410318960148481?s=21
10. Autistic Twitter: “how could that creepy goblin represent an autistic child better than an actor could?”
11. Playhouse: “Well you see because he’s a non verbal autistic and aggressive so things get pretty physical and also it would be stereotypical and insulting to make a human play an autistic person but if we use an inanimate object it’s fine.”
12. Autistic Twitter: “We are NOT okay with this.”
13. Playhouse: “You haven’t even seen the play. We consulted with so many autistic people.”
14. National Autism Society: “Yeah you consulted us and we told you that this play was problematic and that you should make some major changes including dumping the puppet.”
15. Playhouse: “And we took those notes under advisement.”
16. NAS: “But you didn’t make the changes.”
17. Playhouse: “No. Because you just a read a script and we know you’ll all feel differently when you see it.
18. Autistic Twitter: “So... can autistic theatre critics get free tickets so we can see if?”
19. Playhouse: “No we can’t afford to give out free tickets to critics.”
20. Non-Autistic Critic: “Actually you offered ME free tickets and I turned them down saying you should give them to an autistic critic.”
21. Playhouse: “...Hey look, opening night!”
22. Non-Autistic Critic: “So I went to see it and... it’s really weird. The parents are terrible people and I cannot for the life of me understand why they thought an adult man with a grey faced goblin sprouting from his groin making autistic noises was more realistic than an autistic actor playing the child themself.”
Tumblr media
23. Non-Autistic Autism Advocate: “I went to see it and it was SO GOOD. I totally forgot that Laurence was a puppet he seemed so much like a real autistic child in that he was not human and he didn’t even feature that much in the play.
The heartbreak of the family dealing with the tragedy of autism was so real and honest and I have NO idea why people are offended by this wonderful play that portrays autism as a family-destroying evil.
24. #ActuallyAutistic Critic: “GUYS I WENT TO SEE IT AND OMG. Theatre isn’t sensory friendly, non sensory friendly performances, no trigger warnings on anything even though it’s full of ableism and screaming people.
Plot of the play is that the kid is being taken by social services to go to an institution.
Big plot twist is that the mom called them herself because she couldn’t handle the autism anymore.
Puppet just flaps around and occasionally attacks people. I actually really love puppetry but this was messed up and not well done AT ALL.
These people are all terrible. Dad has been taking shits on the Mom’s pillow and blaming it on his non-verbal son.
Puppet gets pinned to the ground in that move that can kill people.
The puppet’s care worker says that autistic people are animals who have reincarnated as people, and he’s still the best human being in this play.
This is play is an ableist shitfest written by allistics for allistics about the tragedy of autism and how it destroys families.”
25. Autistic Twitter: “Sorry, did you say the Dad SHITS ON HIS WIFE’S PILLOW AND BLAMES HIS SON??”
26. Allistic Twitter: “This play was SO brave to be so honest about how awful autistic children are! So refreshing to see a play showing the PARENTS’ viewpoint for once!
(SERIOUSLY)
Tumblr media
So that’s where we are right about now. If you want to go be angry the hashtag on twitter is #puppetgate
Here is a link to Shaun May’s amazing and horrifying review of this tire fire of a play.

So... about that "puppetgate" thinggy...
1. Autistic people are NOT fucking puppets. We are human beings. We don't have any dead-body-grey skin, we aren't made of any clothes, and we are not a bloody toy.
2. Autism👏is👏not👏a👏 disease!!!👏👏👏👏 If I had a dollar for each time any of us had to explain it to allistic™ people, I'd be richer than mark Zuckerberg himself!
3. Autistic people aren't animals and we won't be treated like ones.
4. Is your child autistic and you're the type of parent to be like "wElL aUtIsM iSn'T jUsT aFfEcTiNg tHe cHiLdddd!!1!!!" and agreed with every single thing in that show?
FUCK YOU. You should be ashamed of yourself. You allistic morons have NO FUCKING IDEA what do we have to go through. Also, I'm adopting your kid.

The autistic person as a puppet thing has yet another insidious message people may be missing: The coloring of the puppet is the kind of gray often seen on corpses. It’s pushing the message that autistic people with extensive support needs are lifeless things to be maneuvered / manipulated instead of seeing them as human beings with their own thoughts, feelings, emotions and wants.

Conversation
Allistics: You can't call yourself autistic! You're a person with autism! The fact that you're a person comes first!
Also allistics: Puppetgate isn't ableist! It's okay to have autistic people portrayed by puppets! They're not really people anyway!

So I’m way, way late here, but I’m just realising something about the puppetgate play.
There’s this whole thing about reading him a social story about how he’s going to an institution, and how the parents should do it together or some shit.
but this is literally the night before probably the biggest change he’s ever experienced in his life. they’re telling him the night before? Not as soon as they knew this was happening?
can you imagine like, sending an NT eleven year old off to boarding school and not bothering to tell them until the night before they leave? packing up for them and shit, but not actually explaining what’s going on.
i can’t think of a single NT adult I know who would react well to that level of sudden disruption. that’s your entire life upended on basically no notice.

Alright, I’m about to continue my S15 watch with S15E18 “Spence’s Choice - Part Two”. I’m excited for even more Michael Spence content.
Edit 1: Oh, it’s a Martin Jameson episode. :/ I still haven’t forgotten him defending the whole Puppetgate thing a few years ago (if you want to know what I mean, look up the play All In A Row, but prepare yourself for ableism... yep, Martin Jameson defended that play).
Edit 2: Oh, the mother of the boy from the previous episode is here as a patient!
Edit 3: Speaking of mothers, here’s Serena’s! I won’t lie, I briefly forgot Serena exists after she wasn’t in the previous episode. For a moment there I just thought AAU at this point was just Michael, Sacha, Chrissie, and Gemma, haha.
Edit 4: Ric saying Serena not being on the ward is good news is relatable. Also, Serena’s wearing her bi cardigan that I never noticed until I saw it pointed out a few months ago. (Obviously, as someone who doesn’t like Serena, I don’t give a lot of attention to what she wears, lol.)
Edit 5: Ollie is a Coldplay fan!
Edit 6: Henrik!!!!!
Edit 7: Ah, here’s Hamish, the med student from a couple episodes ago.
Edit 8: I love Tara.
Edit 9: Serena seriously talked a patient out of having his operation so that there would be a free slot for her mother?? What the fuck?? That’s a proper Henrik-level move and I don’t say that as a compliment.
Edit 10: I love Henrik’s pink shirts.
Edit 11: Aaand plot twist: the kid Michael was concerned was being abused actually most likely has brittle bone disease. Okay then. For all they were going on about how rare it is, it doesn’t seem very rare in the Holbyverse, does it?! I swear the “kid shows up with injuries, the doctors assume the parents are abusing the kid, kid actually has brittle bone disease” storyline has been done over and over again.
Anyway, I theoretically have time to finish watching this episode since there’s only like 10 minutes left anyway, but I have stuff I should probably be doing so I guess I’ll finish this ep in an hour or so, before Eastenders comes on.
Edit 12: Right, let’s finish some Holby. (As some BBC exec probably said on the 2nd of June 2021. 😂)
Edit 13: I can’t really say I’m that interested in this Serena stuff.
Edit 14: Aw, Michael on the phone to his daughter!
Edit 15: I love Gemma giving Michael good advice. <3
Edit 16: Hamish has withdrawn his bullying complaint against Elliot. That’s convenient. 😂

Anyway if I see ANYONE trying to use Julia from Sesame Street to try and defend that ableist piece of shit play, All in a Row, then I'm going into fight mode- Julie is a puppet in a PUPPET show, voiced by a woman whose son is autistic and who worked with autistic kids before and used her knowledge to voice Julia, and was created with care and clear love and written to be good representation to the point she appeared at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade with a noise-cancelling headset- whereas...Larry? I think that's the kids name in All in a Row- correct me if I'm wrong though- is literally a puppet in a play of humans, and its cause this play loves to dehumanize autistic people down to having Larry be played by a puppet and also someone in the play comparing Larry to a animal- and YET, people are still somehow defending All in a Row and think Julia is a good defence.

Autistic people are NOT puppets and  we  have  voices.
There  is a  is  play  in England  where the Autistic  character  is played  by    a  puppet, when they could  of used  an Autistic  actor/actress  Autistic people are NOT  puppets we're  human  beings  who feel  compassion, we  have  voices  too  and we  certainly  are not  objects.  An Autistic  character  shouldn’t  be  represented as an  object that  gets  discarded as soon as  this play ends.

I bought the script for #puppetgate.
You all remember All in a Row, the London play featuring the terrifying grey crotchfruit goblin which represented an autistic child.
Well, I was tired of people saying “did you even see the play?”
I couldn’t afford to fly to England to support an ableist play.
...So I bought the goddamn script.
And I can’t make this post flippant or funny. I’ve read the play and there’s just no more laughter in me.
Tumblr media
I live-tweeted a reading of the whole thing. You can read it here.
Or there’s a threadreader version of it here.
TW/CW for abuse, restraint, institutionalization, alcohol, drugs, sexual assault and pretty much anything else you can think of.
THE PUPPET IS THE LEAST OF THIS PLAY’S PROBLEMS, and I’m saying that about this puppet:
Tumblr media
1. The puppet - Laurence - is on stage and present in the room throughout the play.
That means he hears his father talking about bukkake with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, hears his carer speculating that he is really a puppy wrongly reincarnated into a human body, and his mother saying that she’s excited to live without him and that she called social services on herself.
Things he overhears include:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Laurence is consistently discussed in the third person, even when he melts down and has to be restrained.
They ask each other if they are all right in the aftermath. No one asks him if he is all right.
The only time he is spoken to directly is when he is making a fuss for more food (which he is routinely denied with no explanation of why they don’t want to feed a hungry child).
2. It is made clear that Laurence understands spoken language.
Laurence repeatedly understands and responds to things which are said directly to him.
When his carer says “too loud” he turns his iPad down. When he is told “plate” he goes to fetch a plate.
Tumblr media
When his mother tells him he can have more pizza when the timer goes off he waits for the timer and then comes running when it goes off.
He understands spoken language.
But throughout the play it is considered normal and acceptable to say hideously terrible things right in front of him as if he really was an inanimate object and not just represented by one.
3. No one cares that Dad blamed his pillow-shitting on Laurence
When the mother discovers a turd on her pillow - which we know from a monologue delivered earlier is the fault of the father - she calls her son a “little monster” but the father is struggling not to smile.
Tumblr media
He doesn’t seem to think that maybe it will upset his son to be verbally abused over something of which he is totally innocent.
Later when he reveals the truth the other two are disgusted but NO ONE seems to think that he owes Laurence and apology.
Laurence’s feelings about being blamed for all this are never discussed, mentioned, or thought of.
Oh and also the Dad pissed on his wife’s iPad charger and books. Also blamed on Laurence.
Did I mention the mother called social services on herself so the kid would be taken away because she couldn’t take it any more?
The Dad may have directly contributed to his son’s institutionalization which he is vocally against.
No one points this out.
4. All three adults are drunk or stoned by the end of the play.
The mother comes home with wine and begins drinking. She convinces the carer to have a couple of glasses of wine too. The Dad goes out and comes back stoned.
No one sober is looking after the high-needs child with behavioural challenges.
5. The mother sexually assaults the carer.
When her husband is out of the room the mother flirts with, harasses, and then “forces herself” on the twenty year old carer, Gary.
He is clearly uncomfortable and not into it.
Yes, Laurence is still in the room.
6. The play is very pro-restraint.
In an opening monologue the father describes having to pin his son face down on the ground, calling it “the kind of hold they say is child abuse. The only hold that stops him biting you.”
This is the same hold that has killed many people including 13 year old Max Benson, an autistic boy whose death the playwright used to promote his play.
Tumblr media
Several times during the play the father and carer worry that the institution won’t be able to control Laurence because they aren’t allowed to use holds like that.
The Dad worries his son will end up “sectioned, chemically lobotomized.”
Several times during the course of the play the kid melts down and attacks. He has to be restrained each time.
7. There is so much more than this.
It took me 170 tweets to dissect all the things wrong with this play.
8. What bothers me most didn’t bother reviewers at all.
The Guardian called the play: “a lively, compassionate and darkly humorous show with the unmistakable ring of truth.”
Autism Advocate Anna Kennedy said that “It has great potential to raise autism awareness”.
An Autism Mom team member of hers said, “it did not seem out of place to not use a child. I would in fact feel more uncomfortable had they have used a child due to some of the language and emotional scenes, hence why it has a 16+ age minimum.”
Everyone agrees a child shouldn’t listen to the things being said in this play.
But no one was bothered by the idea of Laurence listening to the things being said in this play.
None of the reviews, from the lukewarm to the raves, express any concern about the things that are said in front of Laurence.
The play is “honest”, “heartwarming”, “raw”, “comedic”.
Yes, comedic.
Reviewer Shaun May told me that when he saw the play, the line where the carer companies Laurence to a puppy “got big laughs.”
That’s all he is.
A punchline.

The people involved in the All in the Row play keep claiming they are receiving abusive messages but refuse to show any evidence this is happening. The producer even demanded that autistic people condemn this behavior.
Meanwhile an Irish publication releases an article that calls autistic people inherently abusive and condones filicide. A child chewing the drywall isn’t abusing his mother, he’s in distress. I’m positive the dehumanization and positive portrayal of abusive parents in All in the Row contributed to this article.
So I’m supposed to condemn bad behavior of other autistic people, that by the way hasn’t been proven to have actually happened; but allistic people don’t have to condemn actual crimes their “art” inspires?

shit like the fucking "all in a row" play is why people are still using "autistic" as an insult in 2019. it offers no constructive advice, no way in how to properly treat autistic folks, and it only serves to dehumanzie and ridicule us. fuck everyone involved in this stupid fucking play
