Married!Pupship (but mostly Jou) headcanon because it’s been stuck with me-

Growing up, Jou had to make do eating whatever was around/stealable because of his precarious living situation. Yugi would invite him over for dinner when he could, and the rest of the gang might discreetly slip some leftovers into his bag at school, but most of the time Jou was on his own. Because of that, he’s definitely not a picky eater, but also hadn’t been exposed to a lot of different kinds of foods either.

Once he and Kaiba start dating though, that begins to change. At first he feels weird about all the “high society” restaurants and dishes Kaiba introduces him to, but he starts to realize that there’s so many different kinds of flavors and textures and ways of making food he’s missed out on. And no, he doesn’t lose any appreciation for a bowl of hearty ramen from a little family shop, or a basic curry, but he takes more of an interest in taking what he’d seen/eaten on dates with Kaiba and learning to make them himself. Because Jou is nothing if not self-sufficient and once he sets his mind to something. Well. That’s it then.

Kaiba definitely picks up on this, and takes a chance setting up a cooking class for the two of them for a date - in private at the mansion with a personal chef of course. Jou LOVES it. And he loves that Kaiba gets involved in the cooking process with him as well. After that, more ingredients start appearing in the kitchen rather than just coffee and stray vegetables, and Jou, when he has time in between dueling and work, starts to teach himself more. Gordon Ramsey, Jacques Pepin, Morimoto - he watches all sorts of tutorials and videos. And really, he has a talent for it. Cooking has a way of funning his energy in a way similar to dueling - you need knowledge, but also instinct and the ability to know how to make changes on the fly. The Kaiba bothers love it - Mokuba because there’s always something delicious in the fridge or on the counter for him to dig into, and Seto because it makes Jou so happy. Also Seto ends up eating more regularly, because it’s very hard for him to refuse food made with love by his husband.

Later, when they adopt Judai as a rambunctious 3 year old, they find that when he’s helping Jou in the kitchen it’s easier for him to settle and relax afterward. And Jou is thrilled to spend that special time with his son. They often visit Kaibacorp together to deliver goodies they’ve made to Seto and his staff, which puts everyone in a better mood. His secretary especially adores them.

Also - 30y/o Jou with his hair in a ponytail, a dusting of flour on his cheek with he and little Judai in matching aprons as they try and make cookies? it doesn’t get cuter than that

Kaiba knows it’s a bad day when Jou is quieter than usual. He’s not that great at pep talks and he prefers looking for solutions rather than wallowing. It has negative consequences early in their relationship, when he tries to tackle everything by himself, instead of just acknowledging how Jou feels. With more experience, he learns to offer food when Jou isn’t too sad to talk and to consult Yuugi when Jou’s mood has really tanked. Sometimes Jou just needs some time with friends.

Jou has a harder time telling when Kaiba is having a bad day because he always seems to be having a bad day. And usually if Kaiba is genuinely upset he isolates, anyway. Consulting Mokuba isn’t as much help as he wants it to be, since Kaiba tries to bear it all himself or pretend it’s not happening. Eventually, it’s enough to let him shut down with someone around - Kaiba is surprisingly amenable to soothing cuddles when he’s feeling down.

How do you think Joey Wheeler would deal with having a s/o where Kaiba calls Joey a dog in front of s/o. later on Joey and s/o get to talking about the dog comment and s/o does agree that Joey does remind them of a dog much to his dismay, they won’t tell Kaiba cuz Joey would feel humiliated and they won’t treat him like an animal as well, it’s just sometimes they can see an imaginary tail wagging sometimes on him, but they’re like to Joey if he gets rowdy about them comparing him to talk, “who doesn’t love dogs? They’re funny, actually don’t always listen to you so things are interesting, loyal, depending on the breed is very intelligent”? That's way too adorable! I think Joey would be really cute as a puppy! He would always waggle his tail and ask for hugs and treats. I actually kinda agreed with Seto when he called Joey "a dog" but not for the same reason. Joey is a very loyal and good friend, he gets easily excited and all he needs is support and love, just like a dog! 🌼❤️

He is also known for having a rivalry with Joey.

So once you heard Seto calling Joey a dog, which made him furious. Later on while you were hanging out with him at your place, Joey actually talked to you about this. He said that Kaiba's comment made him feel humiliated.

The thing is Joey indeed reminds you of a dog. His whole face turned red from the embarrassment, he didn't like this at all.

Dogs are human's best friend. They are always loyal, no matter what. Always there to support their favorite human and accompany them throughout their journey. They also get excited about the smallest things which makes them so pure and adorable. They love to follow their human around because they are full of curiosity. Just like Joey!

When you explained all that to him he literally hid his face in his hands, you have never seen him being this shy before.

Truth is Joey loves following you around and accompany you whenever you go. You are sure that if he had a tail, he would waggle it every time he saw you or his friends. He is just adorable.

Also, everyone loves dogs. They are just too pure for this world and not to mention very smart!

Needless to say, Joey had been thinking about your words for the rest of the day with Yugi asking him every now and then why he would blush so much.

1. Why do you like or dislike this character?

Oh geez, I love my Joey boy so much, honestly. One thing that I think is really great, and I know I've seen other people mention this before, is just how real he feels. His characters is so multifaceted and goes through so much development, and he just feels like such a real dude.

2. Favorite canon thing about this character?

Just, everything? He has certified golden retriever energy with his deep love and loyalties, and it's one of the best things about him.

3. Least favorite canon thing about this character?

I do get annoyed by some of his more obnoxious behavior, and sometimes he's downright embarrassing, but that comes with the territory of being a teenager.

4. If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in?

I do think seeing Joey as a random bystander in a Marvel movie would be a good giggle.

5. What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them?

Ship songs aside, the first song I could come up with was Hall of Fame by Gym Class Heroes. Boy knows what wants. Being at the top, right up there with Kaiba and Yugi, is his repeated goal throughout the series.

6. What's something you have in common with this character?

Brooklyn roots, going by the dub. My grandfather was born there, lived most of his life there. The other thing we have in common is being not on speaking terms with our mothers. 🥰

7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?

The fandom never lets us forget where Joey started: violent, street-tough bully trying to scrape a life together basically on his own. As much as I love cute happy Joey chilling with the scapegoats and his pals, it would be such a disservice to forget where he came from.

8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?

I actually can't think of anything? I think the fandom generally treats Joey well.

9. Could you be roommates with this character?

That's actually a tough question. Depends on how good he is about cleaning up after himself. I think we could probably with something out though, a deal that involves trading chores for meals.

10. Could you be best friends with this character?

Probably, but I'd probably be at least half as naggy as Tea is with him. The "omg Joey use a napkin boi" kind of nagging, but I think he'd fit right in and we could tease and be goofy.

I'm married, so the safe answer is no lol

12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?

Boy had to get good at taking care of himself, so he shops deals and coupons and plans his meals around those, even when he's more financially secure. It's an ingrained habit.

Aw, I can only pick one? If I had to go based off of the Joey ships I've written, it would be Puppyshipping, but I think Puffshipping is crazy precious. And I can't shut up about Polarshipping anytime he and Mai are in a scene together, their chemistry is too good. So those are my top three. There's so many good Joey ships though!!!

16. What's your least favorite ship for this character?

I don't know that I have one? Not as far as popular ships go. I'm not big into Riskshipping, I can only see it as being unhealthy even with Mokuba aged up. (Irateshipping and Fadeshipping aren't necessarily healthy either, but they're very fascinating.)

17. What's a ship for this character you don't hate but it's not your favorite that you're fine with?

So, on the DM shipping list is Babbleshipping, which is Joey x Kisara, which I just can't imagine working (and I've never seen any fanworks for it either), but I also find the idea of Joey swooping in as Mr. Steal Your Dragon Girlfriend from Kaiba kinda hilarious.

18. How about a relationship they have in canon with another character that you admire?

Joey's got a lot of great pals, but I think Tristan is just such a solid bro to him throughout the whole show (except for hitting on Serenity which is still so weird to me cause she's 12). But the advice he was giving him in Season Four regarding Mai was honestly solid advice: "give up on her, man, you're just going to get hurt if you keep going like this." It's just too sweet. Joey doesn't listen to him ofc because this boy never gives up.

19. How about a relationship they have in canon that you don't like?

Obviously I wish he had a better relationship with his dad, but it's Yugioh: good dads aren't allowed.

20. Which other character is the ideal best friend for this character, the amount of screentime they share doesn't matter?

I think Duke is actually a godd logical, grounding, down to earth presence for Joey to be around. Duke is not afraid to call him on his crap, and I can just see then getting along pretty well, esp once Joey's matured just a little bit more.

22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to ths character? Something you don't like?

I appreciate when people write him with the accent, even if it's only slightly. It's just a fun detail imo. I appreciate the details people create to fill in his exact background as a fighter and how he lives and stuff. The attention to detail with the roots of who he is as a person.

23. Favorite picture of this character?

The first thing that popped into my mind is a fanart of his previous small smile, but I assume this is asking for canon images, so... Just look how happy and cool he is!!!!! And his Lord of Red appearance is just too heckin cool for me to not include.

24. What other character from another fandom of yours that reminds you of them?

I think Ashe Duran from FE3H would be able to relate to him with their roots in poverty and both changing (Joey from a bully and Ashe from a thief) into becoming the best, most noble versions of themselves that they can be. They have the sweetest smiles and would do anything to protect their little siblings.

Rock from Nanbaka is a little similar I guess, but Rock comes from money and has a much more refined palette when it comes to food. Rock was still a gang member though, just like Joey, and they both think with their stomachs and are still brawlers. Also literally delinquents.

If I had to compare him to someone in UtaPri, I'd say he's got the same mischief vibes as Reiji, but the better match is the happy sunshine child Otoya Ittoki who's been through a lot and had a rough childhood but won't let it get him down. The future is full of opportunity for these boys.

25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?

Oh geez, let me think back to twelve year old me... I really can't recall. I remember one of my first impressions in fandom was rejecting puppyshipping, partly just because it was popular, and then the more I learned about the characters separately, the more it compelled me, but that's another story.

My impression of him now? I love this man, he is a beacon of love and loyalty and getting better, which is a good example that all of us need sometimes honestly.

26. FREEBIE QUESTION!!

GUYS I KNOW SEASON FOUR HAD ISSUES BUT IT DID GOOD STUFF FOR JOEY. IT GAVE US HERMOS. IT GAVE US ATLANTIS JOEY. JOEY IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS YUGI AND KAIBA IN A METAPHYSICAL SENSE. HE'S JUST AS MUCH OF A HERO THAT SAVED THE WORLD. HE'S NOT "JUST JOEY." HE IS JOEY FUCKING WHEELER, AND DON'T YOU FORGET IT.

Seriously though, imagine how validated that made Joey feel? Surrounded by shadow magic and "chosen ones" and all this talk of reincarnation and destiny, and he thinks he's just along for the ride until wham! No bitch, you're special too! That's gotta warm his heart and make him smile, even after bad days working shitty jobs, or getting second place at a tournament. He's a legendary knight, his soul is tied to the Spirit World just as strongly as Yugi and Kaiba. He'll never lose his confidence ever again as long as he remembers that.

Also, I love the idea of him having all daughters. He's going to spoil them and be so crazy protective of them. He will never let them think they're anything less than gorgeous. He will sit down to tea parties with the frilly princessy one and give fighting tips to the butch one and adore all of them and very publicly threaten their partners with bodily harm if you ever dare hurt his girls. Dad Joey makes me happy. ❤️

1. Sexuality headcanon: I see him as either gay or asexual and aromantic. I can't imagine him with a woman honestly. A lot in a "you're gay because you like men, I'm gay because I hate women, we're not the same" kind of way. I also think he's totally the type to repress his sexuality because "I'm not like those people, I'm normal".

2. OTP: Mikalight does it to me. They're made for each other.

3. Brotp: I don't know?? Honestly I can't imagine Mikami being bros with anyone... Maybe except some corporate parties (and only when he's soberen't), and all of this just for show.

If you follow my main, you know I've been focusing on medical stuff again. Just went for bloodwork last week. 13 pages of things to test for, I think 8 vials of blood. I finally got the results back this morning, and I've been going over them, comparing flagged things to symptoms. A few of these results could be connected to low sex drive. Not one of my symptoms, but I was reading everything anyway. These are disorders & conditions related to organ damage, where the symptoms may either be nonexistent, or just 1 symptom, or mistaken for other things, or even written off as nothing. But this actually isn't about my medical journey. That's long and confusing even to uncaring professionals, and I of course have to wait to at least see what my endo says about it all. This is cuz... I'm 35, been on this journey since I was 12, and finally staring at hard numbers from my blood that most likely mean organ damage from 29 years of untreated hypothyroidism. So I have some delicate life experience, that I hope others are willing to not bite my head off over.

...especially cuz it's June.

. But I'm also putting this HERE, on kaiba-fangirl, as a reassurance that I am not trying to write this off the other way, either. Because, my hardest headcanon for Kaiba, since 15, through all the shipping through all these years, even way back then, whenever someone would ask me who I ship Kaiba with, (& let's be real, they meant-) do I like Puppyshipping - or even alone, did I think he was gay? In 2003, I didn't know what to succinctly answer except, "I don't really think he'd be into anyone..."

. Kaiba & Joey stuff was usually hot cuz they're independently both hot. Kaiba & Serenity was just to get Joey steamed, & again both hot in fanart. Kaiba & "blue-haired-girl" (before her name was reliably translated) was just cuz BEWD destiny ancient egypt. Kaiba & Mai - just my 2 faves, so put together? Eh... 🤔 Nahhh.

. Probably 10 years later before I finally learned "asexual" & was like "FINALLY" - but not for myself. Ohhh very much not myself lol. But I finally had a word to describe Kaiba.

. So, as I hope you can guess by now, I'm (probably making a huge mistake typing this out loud) here to combine these 2 things to tell you: Low sex drive *CAN* be a medical indicator that something is wrong. And it could be a singular symptom, but a closer look at extensive bloodwork can tell a larger story. I *look* perfectly healthy. On average, I usually feel pretty fine. Which is how it took 29 years to find my hypothyroidism, during which time it's caused other organ damage (adrenal glands, kidney, pancreas. & then heart disease if I can't get my cholesterol under control, diabetes if I can't get the insulin resistance under control) & hurt my life greatly. And I don't know what treatment is going to look like from here on out.

. Yes, asexuality is valid & I even feel I do understand it. I do know it doesn't just mean low sex drive; I know you can be asexual with a high sex drive. I know it's not about that; it's about feeling sexual attraction, or not. I know it's not absolute but a spectrum. But for a lot of people, it does seem they also say they have low sex drive. And if that is so for anyone, then please do not ignore the fact that it can also be a medical symptom. You probably already know it's also a side effect of SSRIs.

. I certainly do not care who wants to claim asexual for any reason. That has nothing to do with me. But - please - don't let a hidden medical thing - like the autoimmune disorder that hypothyroidism is (& whatever else may be wrong with me) or the metabolic syndrome that PCOS is (a possibility my endo is looking into) - destroy your actual organs just because you didn't want to check.

. I'm just older & don't want anyone else to go through what I have with all of this. I have had to fight since I was 12 to get a blood test workup like this one. & it's probably cuz I'm just going to reportedly "the best" practice within 50 miles, which means no insurance & throwing a credit card at them. With gas & tolls round it to $500 first visit, $250 followups. First time in my life some of this stuff is getting tested. 29 years before my thyroid was ever tested. @ EVERYONE, get your thyroid tested. Endocrine issues are so misunderstood or little understood, can hide as so many other things, or get written off as absolutely nothing, but they affect everything in your body. It's basically how your brain tells your organs what to do. It's so important. But no one pays attention.

. I understand the sensitivity, but not everyone who tells you to check low sex drive medically is just trying to write off asexuality. I'm saying get it checked cuz too many symptoms of actually serious things get written off as nothing. THIS is the kind of "something medically wrong" we're talking about. Kinda need your other organs to work to keep your body alive to even be around to be asexual. Okay?

. And this applies to so many other things I'm seeing on these lists. Anything. Don't ignore it. Do whatever you can to see a good doctor. If reddit doesn't die, find a community there to share stories & experiences. This just seemed to be the one thing I've seen people get defensive over, taking it as only an identity thing, when there can very much be serious physical reasons behind it. Puppyshipping headcanon 2: Jounouchi often comes down with a case of “my boyfriend is a genius and I love him soooo much.” And, look, Seto is used to people praising his talent and brains, to the point it often rings hollow. He’s not used to anyone other than Mokuba actually giving a damn about his real interests. But for whatever reason, Jounouchi will park himself next to Seto and watch him build 3D models or pull apart a duel disk and beg him to tell him what he can, even if it goes over his head, “because you love this stuff and I love you and I want to be part of it.”

Seto gradually gets better at explaining things in ways that Jounouchi can understand, if only because he wants Jounouchi to be a part of it, too.
