He had duties to fulfill, he didn’t have time nor the inclination to watch, what was it, the planet’s sun rise over the distant mountain range. “Yes, Sir.” Fell into parade rest and pretended to not notice the General’s hands shaking. It wasn’t his place. Good soldiers follow orders.

i have a disease where seeing fun jokey fan content abt smth canonically tragic just makes me think abt the canonical tragedy even more. this post is about post-order 66 commander cody working closely with darth vader

because, yeah, okay, lot of comedic potential inherent in that dynamic. but personally i can't think about vader for more than three seconds without starting to want to rend my clothes and wail, so, in that vein,

one of the Things about post-order 66 cody is, like. [bucky barnes voice] but i did it. as far as he knows he DID kill obi-wan! he did that! and even if he learns he didn't actually order the killing blow, he did still order the killing blow. whether or not obi-wan is still, technically, alive doesn't negate that order 66 killed him. post-rots obi-wan is a dead man walking, a ghost in the sense of that siken quote; a ghost is something dead that doesn't know it's dead.

and one of the other things is. cody, during the clone wars, is a man with absolutely no meaningful agency and no good choices trying to do the best he can. and then it turns out his best was functionally meaningless, it turns out even when he thought he was managing to defy his explicitly-given purpose he was actually playing right into the hands of it, nothing he has ever done has meant anything good. it's a very fundamental part of the story of star wars, imo, that almost no one involved in the defeat of the empire was there for the birth of it. the specific way sidious won is so insanely demoralising. you thought you were doing good! you were sure! (you told yourself you were sure!) how can you ever be sure again!

so. all my love to stories about cody defecting, but my go-to interpretation is. he stays with the empire, until it kills him too, because it is so incredibly easy to continue as you were. leaving would be a decision. leaving would mean he is capable of deciding not to follow bad orders, and then why didn't he do it sooner. there is no space left in him for agency, even if the chip does allow for some, because if he has no agency it wasn't his fault. and if it wasn't his fault he can get out of bed and try to mitigate damage where he can.

(or not even that. i do like the idea that the chips aren't straight-up overwriting personhood so much as making personhood deeply unappealing. what good has personhood ever done you. all that effort and for what? you're still here. isn't it easier just to follow orders.

like i don't think pre-tcw / pre-chips works treated the clone troopers with much respect but there is something There re: agency & following bad orders & how real non-mind-controlled people do terrible things for no good reason all the time. cartoon network show, not going to do moral complexity, anyway i'm getting off topic)

so!!! speaking of guys who fucked up and now can't acknowledge they fucked up or their whole everything will crumble out from under them like so much sand!!!!

vader is also a guy with a chronic lack of agency who was manipulated into horrible acts and has now sunk cost fallacy'd himself into continuing to do more horrible acts forever. this isn't me being an apologist (it lied), this is the point of vader's character. you CAN, at any time, choose to be better! vader didn't, though. vader didn't for twenty years, because, again, the thing about choosing to be better is it's hard. it means you weren't doing good before. it means you cannot just mindlessly follow someone else, it means you have to think and make choices and take action.

it says a lot about vader that he only turned back to the light at the end. it's a lot easier to throw the last twenty years of your life away when you've only got to reckon with having done it for, like, five minutes. vader is a cautionary tale about the slippery slope of refusing to reckon with what you've done.

so. putting vader & cody in the same room...... two guys blaming themselves for killing obi-wan kenobi (the republic) while actively working for the guy who actually killed obi-wan kenobi and also so many others (the republic). and i don't think they would ever talk about that. i don't think they'd ever talk about anything, i do not think you can lean that far into being someone else's tool and remain capable of talking about yourself. but there sure is an elephant in that room with them, huh. it sure is holding a lightsaber and wearing a robe and very, very dead.

I have few complaints about this show, but I swear that 99.9999% of them are because Quinlan and Cody are not fucking in it!

I'm ready to beg. Five minutes in the final episode, that's all I ask. FIVE MINUTES.

Quinlan being wherever they land and saying 'Kenobi, you look worse for wear' with a shit-eating grin and tired eyes.

A Purge Trooper who's helmet flies off to reveal a hooked scar around his eye and the camera pans back around to see Obi-Wan's shock and horror.

The Codywan Fake Imperial Husbands AU (full working title: Fake Imperial Husbands of the Infinite Sith Sadness, or FIHOTISS) is an homage to/collaboration with this 'verse created by @frostbitebakery. It's a Purge Trooper Cody/Sith Lord Obi-Wan AU with a couple twists, and without giving too much away I can say the fic is going to be a 5+1 involving subterfuge and angst and hopefully some mystery. Here's a wee drafty snippet:

When CC-2224 returned to consciousness, he detected an unknown material covering his face and hands. A mixed-textile fabric. Garment-standard stitching and humanoid tailoring. A coat. It was Lord Tash’s coat, black and heavy - soft. The fibers were thick and soft against his fingers, not as rough as the robes.  CC-2224 blinked. An error. He detected a matching error: the coat was black and soft, but it smelled like - internal memory search initiated - like bergamot, like - warning: file corruptions detected - General Kenobi, he thought, the gray washing over him like a wave before - Initiate full system reboot.

Happy halloween!! Today I bring you Force Ghost Obi-Wan bothering his ex-boyfriend imperial purge trooper Cody (but are you really exes if you technically never broke up and he only tried to kill you?)

My dear, the voice said, and CC-2224 could see him now. The old General stood at the end of the hallway, his arms folded over one another. He stared at CC-2224, his eyes softening when he realised that CC-2224 was staring back. Oh, my dear, he said again, something in the General’s voice clawed at CC-224’s insides. Slowly, the General took a step back and rounded the corner, disappearing from CC-224’s point of view. Panic wrought it’s way to the forefront of CC-2224’s mind, and he shook off Tilly’s hand. “I have to go,” he said, more to himself than to Tilly. “I have to follow him.” He took off down the hallway, ignoring Tilly’s worried shouts as he followed the ghost of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Kenobi might have had a head start, but CC-2224 had memorised the layout of this ship. He knew what turn Kenobi was going to make before he even made it. He was caught up in a matter of seconds. The General was in front of him, close enough to reach, when he turned and disappeared into a wall. CC-2224, being a mortal man made of flesh, slammed into the wall full force. It send him tumbling back onto his ass, the plastoid pressing hard enough to leave bruises. He hissed uncomfortably, standing back up to see where Kenobi had run off to. CC-2224’s own quarters. Kenobi had hid in CC-2224’s own quarters.

Me for the past 2 weeks thinking about this nonstop every time I have a spare second: what WERE my top fics of 2022??

I've carefully picked out the below, but there are many, many, MANY fics that I enjoyed this year, so picking just 5 was so hard okay 😭 that being said, all of these are codywan recs except one (besides codywan and TOA fic I don't think I read anything else this year... Well, besides The Desert Storm which is an ongoing series, but which I recommend to every person, whether you like Star Wars and whether you like time travel or not). I've posted the below fics in the order I read them so no favouritism in the order they're listed!

This was my gift for FFFX and let me say I seriously won the jackpot with this one!! It really has so so much tailored for me, like time travel of codywan from tatooine into a clone wars fix it, the angst of purge trooper Cody and him struggling with what he did, trans Obi-Wan, hurt/comfort, established relationship, it was funny, and most importantly, Palps got killed 😊

I just remember reading this summary, and even before I clicked it I was like YES!!!! This person understands the characters and their dynamic and the prose is excellent, this fic is going to be freaking awesome. And I was right! It balances character growth and plot brilliantly, and the construction of each section is so thoughtful and combines into an incredibly crunchy whole. I was so disappointed when I checked the author's profile to find that this was their only codywan fic, but elwen has since graced us with many excellent works, and I recommend anything that she has written!

Thirty-One Sons, Thirteen Moons [32.7k] by sual

“This can’t keep happening,” Jango says despairingly. He’s said this almost every year for the past twenty-five of them. “Well,” Cody slowly replies, looking down at the squalling baby the witch has left on their doorstep, “what’s one more mouth to feed when you’re already feeding thirty?" - In Cody's latest attempt to sacrifice himself for his family, he finally learns how to want something for himself. Modern AU with magic.

Urban fantasy is my favourite genre, and this fic captures everything I adore about it - the inclusion of magic into the setting is so natural and informs the plot deliciously. I usually am a very hard sell on modern AUs and on relationships of convenience, but the excellent writing and Obi-Wan's gender fuckery got me hooked, and I'm so very glad I gave this one a chance. It's such a great idea, executed super awesomely and the smut throughout is sooo hot augh

Meg & Apollo's Highly Limited Roadtrip Playlist [3.2k] by Curioser [and the prequel as a bonus!]

Fourteen hundred miles. Four radio stations. Two friends trying hard not to kill each other, or to acknowledge the fact that in less than a week, they may never see each other again. And Lizzo. So much Lizzo.

Reading this immediately after finishing the TOA books made me sooooooo emo like you have NO idea!!! Meg and Apollo's relationship was the core part of TOA that I enjoyed the most, and this fic made me see that relationship in a different light, gave me a different view as this is from Meg's POV instead of Apollo's like the books are, and introduced me to a whole bunch of new music too. It feels far too short for the amount of gutpunches contained within - the comparisons between their fathers, their situations and lives, and how they're coping with that, all made me sooo overwhelmed like aaaaaa *insert screaming cat meme* they're best friends. They're best friends!!!!

They find ways to pass the time. - Obi-Wan’s voice is low and Cody can almost picture his expression despite not quite being able to pick out his features; the incline to his head is almost hungry, his eyes half-lidded and thoughtful. “I’m sure you have several suggestions already.” “Only several?” Cody punctuates the question with a kiss, drawing Obi-Wan’s hand to his mouth rather than chance finding his mouth in the semi-shadows. The split lip hadn’t been worth it with the benefit of hindsight, regardless of how attractive the gesture had seemed at the time. Cody’s lips brush against the rough edge of a bacta patch, an old one worn and reused until it is more placebo than curative, but Cody still skirts around the edge of it, kissing the seams of Obi-Wan’s fingers and tasting salt.

This was another gift for me and it is just so so so good 🥺 I love how magpie writes codywan as the flow between them, their characters, their banter and their relationship is so lovely and amazing! Codywan on tatooine are my favourite version of codywan, and it is nailed here - the yearning and the grief and the closeness that comes from being the only two people in the galaxy. Plus trans Obi-Wan has my whole heart, which was the cherry on top of the rest of this excellent fic

Cody and Obi-Wan renovate a house together out in the Dune Sea. Along the way, they discover something else worth keeping.

I wrote this in like 4 weeks as a gift for Emi, and the process came together to really deliver what I wanted, and Emi really enjoyed it, so it was just a really enjoyable process the whole way through!

Purge Trooper Cody meets old Ben

The hunt for Kenobi was CC-2224’s life work. He tracked down every lead, no matter how small. The Jedi were crafty and this one in particular was more wily than most. 

Eventually they heard a rumor about a lonely mystic on Tatooine and Cody, ever vigilant, took a squad to check it out. They tracked down a cloaked figure near Mos Eisley. 

One glance of stormy blue eyes and it was like a jolt hit him. 

CC-2224 shoved the unusual reaction to the side, letting his training take over, barking out orders to his men. They were trained to take out Jedi but even then, going up against one was never easy. 

Kenobi took out his men, punching and kicking, but his movement was sluggish. It didn’t take much for Cody to overpower him and press him against the cliff face. In a rather disappointing end, Kenobi was just as fallible as every other Jedi. 

“On your knees,” CC-2224 snarled.

He had heard so much about Kenobi, watched him battle, knew his every move, but in the end he was just a tired old man. He was nothing special.
