can i ask - what are you thoughts on the current anti-shipping phenomenon in fandom? I've recently gotten into SPN fandom and fallen in love with your fics, but the state of the fandom puzzles me a bit.

Anti-shipping is not a SPN fandom phenomenon, and maybe it seems to be a bigger deal to you because it's a bigger fandom? Wincest and Destiel shippers have been at war since episode 04x01 aired lol...we even have derogatory names for each other: Wincels and Hellers.

(Jokes on the Wincels, because Heller is a fucking awesome name.)

(Wincestiel shippers are fandom unicorns, and they deserve love and respect.)

I've only been involved in fandom since 2011, so most of what I know about anti-shippers comes from piles and piles of posts talking about fandom history, but the gist of it is that this is not current, it is ongoing since the dawn of fandoms, we just have names for it now. Think about Spirk back in the 60s...there were lots of rabid fangirls who saw nothing romantic between them too. We just don't hear as much about them, because they lost their fandom war lol

It's just really loud right now with the rise of conservatism, fascism, and terfs. And social media amplifies all of the above.

Anyway, my thoughts on anti-shippers is that they need to grow up and mind their own business. I am a pro-shipper, which means I believe that anyone has the right to love any ship, no matter how problematic, no matter how much it squicks me out. I believe everyone should be allowed to read whatever vile smut they want, because thought crimes are not real.

Unless a real person is being hurt, have fun.

Antis claim that problematic ships and kinks hurt people, but I think it's important to understand that there's a big difference between accidental and deliberate harm. And harm mitigation is highly important in a world with 7+ billion people and 7+ billion different lived experiences.

If an anti-shipper is hurt by a ship they don't like, they need to learn how to block and filter content so they don't see it, and on the opposite side of that, the vile shippers/kinksters need to tag their nonsense so that they're not accidentally burning someone's eyes out. Which most people ARE kind enough to do. They sit around in their little ficcing circles and cackle over the evil things they're putting their blorbos through, and they put up warning signs, but the antis come barging in to bug them anyway.

In my opinion, many antis are big fucking bullies and do a lot more harm than they claim to try and prevent, and they can all go fuck themselves with something hard and sandpapery.

So uh... yeah, that's how I feel about it 😁

(okay actually I'm not done, there's a lot of anti-shipping discourse about age gaps and what counts as incest that are just... really fucking stupid, and I honestly believe that shit started out because people were grasping for straws to justify why their ship is better than the ship they don't like. unfortunately, the youngins have been soaking up that moral purity language as Objective Truth because they're little sponges. i hope they outgrow that bullshit eventually. i will forgive and forget if they leave behind their purity police badges.)

I’ve been picking up followers lately, as we all have, and I notice some of them have variations on “proshippers dni.”

Let me make something clear. For decades, proshipping was the norm. Proshippers are able to distinguish fantasy from reality. Proshippers do not have a history of harassing, dogpiling, doxxing, and even threatening the lives of antis. Antis, on the other hand, are well known for doing all of those things in the name of righteousness, and if you think that’s normal, I don’t want to know you.

I don’t care to argue with the Purity Police, and any such wank sent to my blog will just get you blocked.

What is the deal with YA authors being accused of pedophilia when they include sexual content in their books?

Do y'all not realize that stuff written about minors for minors includes ALL topics that minors deal with? Teenagers have sex, they have desires, they find other teenagers attractive, they think sexual thoughts. An author writing about a character's inner life does not make the author a pedo. Even in the case of writing about actual pedophilia, like in Lolita, it doesn't make the author a pedo. Painting a banana does not make one a banana, or even someone who enjoys eating bananas.

Would you rather all YA be written by teenagers? Good luck. Not saying that teenagers can't ever write anything good, but writing is a craft that takes time to develop, just like learning how to build a house, wire the electricity, cook or make furniture. Acknowledging that there are 16-year-olds who can make a mean omelette doesn't mean I would entrust the entirety of meals to people below 18. If you can cook, great! Someone probably showed you how to do it, or gave you a recipe. Most likely an adult.

Moreover, please, please take into consideration what a sanitised literary world would entail.

You may find it weird when a 30-something writes about teenagers having sex, but do you find it weird when an adult teaches sex ed? Would you prefer to be taught sex ed by someone your own age? Or would you rather not have sex ed at all?

Not all adults are your enemies. Some of us remember quite well what being a teenager was like. I know that my sex ed was shit. I was incredibly grateful that I had access to the internet, that I could look shit up. Stuff that adults put out there for me, so I could avoid unwanted pregnancy, STIs, consent issues, shame, and hurting myself/others. Consider that the YA authors who are opting to put sexual content in their books are doing it for you, because they care and because they have also been teenagers once.

I support the actions and behaviour of Jason Spisak of last year 100%. He had every right to do what he did and for anyone to trty and stand up[ to his ‘’creepy’’ behaviour that I find fully acceptable, is just pathetic. The real creeps are the ones who had the nerve to release those Discord dms. They are the real problem. The ones who see ‘’predatory behaviour’’ and ‘’grooming’’ where there isn’t any. The ones who want to ‘’do the right thing’’ and ‘’stop this from happening to anyone else.’’ Like THEY  know what’s best for society. Well I do know what’s best for it. Reminder to stomp out anti nonsense in the whump community. Whump fans of all people should know better.

No, the person writing underage shipping fic isn’t somehow more morally twisted than the person writing twenty pages of loving detail about their favourite whumpee being whipped and brought to the brink of death. Fiction is fiction. The appeal of both is the same. We all get that, right?

Some people use it as a creative outlet. Some people use it to cope with their own trauma. Some people are just fascinated by dark things the same way people are fascinated with horror or true crime. You can’t know which one it is, you can’t force people to reveal whether they write it for an “”acceptable”” reason without hurting those who are already hurting most and need that outlet most, and it’s really, really none of your business.

I say this because I had a reblog along the lines of “dark content is fine as long as it’s not pedo or incest”. No. Let’s not do any of that shit here. You either believe in harassing and policing people over fiction, or you don’t. There is no middle ground there, no “yes, but...”.

We can’t allow the thoughtcrimes brigade to ruin whump spaces, and they will ruin them if we let them. This is one of the few spaces where we can still simply unapologetically write what appeals to us without guilt or shame.
