The Merybury Chronicles: Volume VII

Festive COVID has struck, so just a small update today, I'm afraid, with some snippets of news from around the town.

A new retirement community has opened its doors - Purvis Lodge.

Herbert and Faith Goodie are the first residents to move in, and take advantage of the leisure facilities.

It's also time to say goodbye to another pet - Pip.

Sally smustles away the sadness of the loss. She's due to head off to uni any day now, along with several of her fellow teens.

The rumour around town is that George Wickham is playing away from home.

Certainly, a few months later, Marla Biggs registers the birth of a daughter, whom she names Georgina.

Does the little girl bear any resemblance to her purported father? Perhaps. I'm sure we'll be seeing her around town, so there'll be plenty of opportunity to decide. Georgina's stats:

Die Another Day was released on November 22, 2002. The movie was the 20th EON James Bond film, 40th anniversary of the Eon Bond films, the last Bond film to feature Pierce Brosnan as Bond, and the first EON Bond film not to feature Desmond Llewelyn as Q since Live and Let Die (Llewelyn had died and John Cleese's character was promoted to Q). The movie was a financial success, but a critical failure. There were plans to use it as pilot for a spin off franchise for the new character Jinx played by Halle Berry, but nothing ever came of it. The movie also marked the last time Samantha Bond played Moneypenny. ("Die Another Day" James Bond Movie Event)

"The Grave of the Slave" - Sarah Louisa Forten Purvis (1814-1884)

The cold storms of winter shall chill him no more, His woes and his sorrows, his pains are all o'er,- The sod of the valley now covers his form, He is safe in his last home, and fears not the storm. The poor slave is laid all unheeded and lone, Where the rich and the poor find a permanent home, No master can raise him, with voice of command, He knows not, he hears not, his cruel demand. Not a tear, not a sigh, to embalm his cold tomb, No friend to lament him, no child to bemoan; Not a stone marks the place, where he peacefully lies, The earth for his pillow, his curtain the skies. The Merybury Chronicles: Volume VIII

The latest edition of Merybury's community newsletter is out now!

Herbert Goodie - resident of Purvis Lodge - is not living up to his name. He's been spotted around town, stealing newspapers right from other Sims' doorsteps!

There's also been a worrying increase in the number of wolf sightings, with the animals brazenly appearing even in daylight hours, right in the heart of urban Sanditon!

Contrary to official recommendations, it looks like some Sims might be actively encouraging their presence. Respected consultant neurologist Henry Tilney in particular, seems to be developing a keen interest in wolf husbandry in his spare time.

Alien activity is also on the increase again, with the latest abductee being Mary, veteran scientist and reclusive widow of George Knightley.

Far from being traumatised by her out-of-this-world encounter, Mary is said to have found her adventure highly stimulating!

Shortly after Mary's return from her outer space travels, it was sadly time to part with her faithful feline companion Orlando.

And old 'friend' Edmund Bertram had the bad luck to be struck by lightning - during a freak thunderstorm* - when he dropped round to compare notes with Mary on her alien visitation, having more than once been subjected to a similar experience himself. Thankfully, he was only lightly scorched. *Mary reports that she will shortly be embarking on a new research project, investigating the meteorological impact of alien incursions.

LOOSE NOOSE

On February 7, 1894, twenty-one-year-old Will Purvis was marched up the steps of the gallows to be hanged. The hangman fitted a black hood over Purvis's head and then slipped the noose around his neck, making sure it was properly adjusted. Purvis had been sentenced to death for killing a farmer in Columbia, Mississippi. During his trial, he admitted quarrelling with the farmer, but insisted he was innocent of the man's murder. Shocked when he heard the jury's guilty verdict, Purvis had shouted at them, "I'll live to see the last one of you die!"

Now he was standing over the trap door. Sheriff Irvin Magee signalled the hangman to spring the trap. The door dropped open, and Purvis plunged down through the hole—only to emerge relatively unscathed from below the scaffold. The noose had become unknotted as he’d dropped.

The watching crowd of 3,000 cheered at the miracle. The condemned man had been granted a pardon by God. The deputies led him back up the steps and repeated the preparations, but the mob went wild. As the situation threatened to get out of control, Magee ripped the hood from Purvis's head and took him back to his jail cell.

After several denied appeals, a new execution date was set, but Purvis's friends broke him out of jail and hid him. When a new Mississippi governor was inaugurated in January, 1896, Purvis's sentence was changed to life imprisonment. Thousands of letters arrived at the state house demanding a full pardon. Near the end of 1898, it was granted.

In 1917, a man named Joseph Beard confessed to the farmer's murder, and Purvis was exonerated. He was awarded $5,000 by the state for damages. Three days after the death of the last juror, in 1938, Will Purvis passed away.
